News from the Kiwanis Music Festival by Diana McCarthy, Liaison

1. A reminder for teachers when entering

students in Sight Reading, Quick Study and Transposition classes at the Festival.

Students must enter these classes at the highest level at which a competitor is entered. For example, if a student is entered in a 10 and under and a 12 and under performance class, then he/she must enter a 12 and under S.R., Q.S. or Transposition class. See rule 36 of the Syllabus. 2. An important change to the awarding of results

in Junior Graded Piano. The Kiwanis Music Festival Music Committee has made a decision (based on an initiative supported by over 25 teachers who send students to the festival) to change the awarding of results in Junior Graded Piano. Starting this year, Graded Piano - Introductory to Grade 6 inclusive will receive certificates as follows: Gold (for marks of 87 or above) Silver (for marks between 84 and 86.5) Bronze (for marks between 80 and 83.5) Participation (for marks below 80) The students will not receive a mark. It is hoped that these changes will give recognition to more students for their high achievements. The adjudicators will continue to track specific marks in order to aid them in selecting scholarship winners, but these will not be made public. Students, parents or teachers who want a more competitive environment still have the option of choosing the age category classes.

Royal Conservatory Teacher PD Seminar by Ann Babin, RCM Representative

A group of about 40 Ottawa area teachers participated in the Royal Conservatory Teacher Professional Development Seminar held at Rideau Park United Church on Friday, October 26. The morning session of the Professional Development seminar overlapped with an Examiner workshop. Those of us not members of the College of Examiners, attended James Anagnoson’s workshop on technique and body awareness. Mr. Anagnoson, an engaging speaker with years of performance experience, gave constructive suggestions on dealing with the various technical challenges faced by developing pianists. The topic of the afternoon session led by Dr. Janet Lopinski was adult learners – strategies and methods for working with this growing student demographic. This was a very creative, interactive session where we worked together in small groups exploring approaches to understanding and supporting learning styles of the adult student. The session concluded with a video and follow-up discussion of an adult (a student of Dr. Lopinski) in an examination setting. Two excellent presenters, a generous lunch, and a chance to socialize with colleagues added up to a very good day - well worth the $99.00 seminar fee.

Canada Music Week by Tania Granata, Convenor

On Sunday, November 18, 55 parents and teachers gathered together at the Resurrection Lutheran Church in Orleans to listen to 25 students of ORMTA teachers play music by Canadian composers in celebration of Canada Music Week. Although the concert consisted of mostly piano music, there was also a young vocalist who graced the audience with a holiday song called "D'où viens-tu, bergère?". The students ranged in age from 6 to 17 and the styles of music consisted of everything from classical to jazz. All the teachers of the performers were in the audience which was such a lovely thing to see. One student even per-

formed his own piece which wowed the audience. The concert concluded with a piano/double bass jazz duet which was the perfect way to end a lovely concert. ORMTA Ottawa President Sandra Menard handed out cer-tificates to the students and Canada Music Week Convener Tania Granata treated all the students with Ottawa's famous "Obama" cookies from downtown bakery Moulin de Provence in the shape of a maple leaf. The performers and audience then enjoyed a reception following the concert. All in all, a perfect way to spend an afternoon!!
