2 - MSBCA NEWSLETTER - JANUARY 2017

Friends and supporters of MSBCA, I would like to wish you a very Happy New Year on behalf of the Board. Selamat tahun baru. As

we usher in 2017, I hope good abundance, peace and happiness is upon us all.

There are many challenges and opportunities for us. The sustainability of MSBCA depends on our organization’s fiscal health and the morale of our members. Maintaining an accessible and safe clubhouse does not come freely, yet we recognize that having a clubhouse provides our members a common home to share our heritage and cultures. Thank you Patrick and Clara for looking after our books and Sandy and Eric for looking after our clubhouse maintenance.

In a similar way, we cannot truly put a price on membership value and morale. There

is no doubt; benefits and rewards attract a following. But sometimes to say “I value you” or “I appreciate you” is priceless to the people who gave you a part of themselves. We should say this more often to those we recognize we care for.

In the coming weeks, we would like to refresh our mission statement to better reflect the current interests and activities of MSBCA members. This will open the doors to our bylaw update project.

In our first weekend, January 7-8, a membership drive will be held in the clubhouse from 11am to 2pm. All interested parties are welcome to purchase or renew 2017 membership and purchase tickets to our Chinese Lunar New Year celebration. You will have a chance to meet and greet several of our Board members such as Emily our membership director.

For our Chinese Lunar New Year celebration next month, the organizing subcommittee led by Jesse Cheah seeks sponsors for 12 zodiac animal-themed hampers, which will

be given as lucky draw prizes. To sponsor a Chinese Lunar New Year hamper, please contact myself at [email protected].

Going back to the interests and activities of MSBCA members, it is a wonder to see how many classes we have on almost every day of the week.

From cultural dance classes, to our relatively new singing classes, our being active in the community is very much strong. It is an educational impact. Our Christmas Arts & Crafts program will be the bridge to more youth arts & crafts activities, which will showcase our cultures.

And we look forward to building more bridges in all directions and primarily towards our community of cultural identity. All those who appreciate and share Malaysian, Singaporean or Bruneian culture, all those who find a sense of affinity or identity to it… this is where you belong.

Story by Joyce Yit Photos by Princeton Lau & Valene Cheah

MSBCA celebrated a cold white Christmas on December 10th with 87 people. Almost everyone showed up on time with presents for the children and food in their hands.

At 5:30pm, we started with Bake Sale Fundraiser. There were homemade jam, durian rolls, sponge cakes and pineapple tarts. We had the crowd support and made $200. This proceed will go towards MSBCA Kids and Youth Program.

Jason Ng, Esther Chan and Tan Yee Ho were the MCs for the party. We started the party at 6pm with our 8 adorable Christmas Carols children singing: Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer & Jolly Saint Old Nicholas. After which, we had our festive potluck and Mari Memasak donated a chicken curry dish for that night.

We had Christmas draws, a gingerbread house contest and games for adults and children. Other entertainment included children and adult singing, band and violin performances.

Thanks to all performers: Eva, Ivy, Audrey, Nathan, Ellie, Cara, Amber, Clara, Leanne, Keane, Vincent, Jeff, Soon Kat, Irene and Kendy.

The most exciting was pictures with Santa Claus and presents for the children, thanks SANTA. Everyone went home with a smile on the face.

Lastly, thanks to 2016 Christmas Organizing Committee and all Volunteers who made this party special and successful.

Article and pictures by Muriel Tsoi

Emily Thomson, the recreation therapist of a Senior Home at Bethany Calgary, has invited our club to perform for a special event at Bethany Calgary in December 8, 2016. The objective is to provide Bethany residents of Asian origin some special recreation activities during Christmas Season. Most of the audience are Chinese seniors coming from Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, and Vietnam while some from South East Asia. Emily, Efraimh Repato (another recreation therapist) and Joyce (our club’s recreation co-ordinator) are invited to be our honourable guests for this special event.

The program was started at 1:30 pm.; I am pleased to be the Master of Ceremony. The first dance named “Chinese gowns fans dance” was performed. Six dancers (Kendy Lo, Angel Wong, Phan Chau, Ying Yin Tsang, Ying Xiang Deng and Bles Taguinod) dressed up in Chinese gowns and danced elegantly with special Chinese fans. Most audience are excited to watch the dance. This brought back their past memories at

their young ages, as Chinese gowns are popular costumes for Chinese New Year and special important events.

Tang My Lien sang a famous Chinese opera song “Princess Chang Ping”. This is one of the favourite songs among the audience and some of them even sang together with My Lien.

The same six dancers performed their second Cha Cha dance named “Old Huan dream” The music is very popular in Hong Kong by famous singer Hacken Lee.

One of the Bethany resident was so happy and danced Cha Cha together with us.

The climax of the event was a Spanish dance performed by Kendy, Angel, Ying Xiang and Bles. Three of them dressed in beautiful red and black Spanish dresses while Bles danced like a Spanish matador. Their performance is so awesome. The audience requested the dancers to repeat the Spanish dance again.

The event ended with lots of clapping and excitement.

Most of the Bethany residents are seniors in poor health condition. They rely on wheel-chaired or walkers in their daily life. Some cannot speak or understand English. They are not so lucky and fortunate like ordinary seniors, who can move freely to enjoy recreation activities in China Town or other places in Calgary. Watching our club’s performance is really touching and cheerful for the Bethany residents.

I would like to express my appreciation to the dancers and singer who have practiced many hours for this special event.

I also thank Joyce for the arrangement of this function.

Finally I give my special thanks to Rosalind, Kendy and Angel for their time and effort in training the dancers.

Promotional Event: CCECA Christmas Party Dec 9MSBCA was proud to put up a song and dance performance for CCECA Christmas Party. Thanks to Richard Li for suggesting this idea. On December 9, our Program Leads: Irene Phong, Kendy Lo and Angela Wong, together with Pat Ip and Bles Taguinod welcome the celebration with their fantastic performance.

On December 18, MSBCA, together with the Bahai Community, performed for Aspen Silvera. This is the first MSBCA community project with Bahai and Aspen.

The performance was held in the foyer on the ground level and there were about 70

senior residents that attended. We started off with our MSBCA Chinese Cultural Fan Dance taught by Teacher Cao. The elegant performance fascinated the crowd. Followed by Bahai Community who presented a song by the children. Keane and Leanne Tan performed a duet. Amber, Ellie and Eva

Cheong sang a Christmas Song. After which, each child presented a snowflake made during the Children Christmas Craft Session on December 4 to every resident as a gift.

The residents were so touched and impressed by our hospitality, Bahai and the chidren. The volunteer coordinator would like to see more engagement of MSBCA and other community groups to support and help give back to the community.

MSBCA will work towards and continue to engage with community at large. We will also encourage children to involve in various community projects in Calgary.

December 16, 2016 was the last session of Badminton for Kids and Youth Program Season 2. We had a friendly match among the children. The children had the opportunity to experience badminton match rules and applied whatever they have learnt in Season 1 & 2 to make it more

interesting and challenging. Parents of the children were there to give encouragement and support. Some parents made snacks and desserts for everyone to enjoy. At the end of the match, each child was presented with a gift card for participation. Special thanks to our Coach, Cheah Soon Hong, for

his precious time and effort to develop and improve the children skills and techniques. Thanks to all parents and children for your wonderful support on this program.

Children’s Christmas Arts & Crafts

On Sunday, December 4th, our clubhouse entertained several dozen young children whose enthusiasm and creativity made light and warm a very snowy and cold afternoon.

In our free Arts & Crafts session, kids learned how to create elaborate 4D snowflakes with cardboard and decorate them with glitter. (What is the 4th dimension, one might ask? It is fun.) Snowflakes ranged from modest to elaborate designs, with many vertices leading to a common centre, and in many different colours.

We would like to recognize and appreciate our members Alice Lim & her daughters Amberle and Ameryn, Melody Sia & Yeeho Tan, and our guest Cheryl Melatdoost for their leadership.

Along with MSBCA families, this session brought many children and parents from the Calgary Baha’i community to join in the fun and to learn about Malaysian, Singaporean and Bruneian cultures.

Building bridges is important to us for it allows us to share with others who we are and to know others as they are.

msbca MSBCA Scholarship Award Application 2015 & 2016MSBCA has a long standing policy for scholarships qualifying criteria. Due to our past financial situation, scholarships for 2015 graduates were not given during Chinese Lunar New Year 2016. We would like to retroactively award our 2015 graduates, as well as our 2016 graduates, at our upcoming Chinese Lunar New year 2017 celebration. Members are eligible for the annualscholarship awards for their children from this fund providing that they meet the following criteria:

The student must be a child of a member in good standing and the membership must have been effective during 2015 & 2016 for 2016 graduates or during 2014 & 2015 for 2015 graduates. The child or any member of the family has been an active member in MSBCA. The student or their parent(s) must have volunteered in at least one MSBCA event to be eligible for the Award. The student must have at least one of the four core subjects (Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and Language Arts) in the final report card. The student must be present to receive the Award in person. If it is not possible, the Committee will consider it on a case by case basis.
