2 - MSBCA NEWSLETTER - JUNE 2017

Dear members and friends of MSBCA,

Sometimes it is important to just relax. Two months ago, I spoke of the world

integrating, coming together, and growing ever more interconnected.  That world is upon us. It is filled with people and cultures that are ever-more engaging with each other and striving to succeed and improve their livelihoods.

We Calgarians have seen hard times. We know our share of hard work, decent opportunities and the joys of living in a prosperous community. We also know our share of frustration, disappointment, loss and even despair.

There are some who say that gone are the days when owning a single-family house, and having a permanent full-time job, with company benefits and social security, was the normal lifestyle or the normal standard of living. As technologies make

certain jobs obsolete, and globalization transforms an industry from being a local workforce into an international ocean of talent, our current, and certainly our future generations, will need to find creative and competitive new ways to earn a living. And on top of that, we have to cope with living among more and more people.

Two part-time jobs. Maybe multiple temporary contracts. A home or online business. Tap into a startup niche. Travel abroad. Travel multiple sites. Learn a new skill. Learn a new language. Share a home. Share a vehicle. Rent not own.

Where there were once benefits and social security, and now no more, one must be savvy and save. Save, save, save.

Whether this future vision will be upon us or not, we already face many stressors in each of our daily lives. And in the everlasting hustle and bustle of our daily lives, it is important to just relax. If not, you and/or the rest of the world around you as you know it may appear to fall apart.

One of the joys I have from my role is getting a better understanding of a lot of people

in MSBCA. Such as, the things they enjoy doing and the knowledge and wisdom, which they share to others. As well as, the things that they do at MSBCA, which gives them a time and place to relax.

To teach children how to paint, dance, and sing. To be bold, and let your voice be heard on the stage. To share the lessons of traditional Malaysian cooking. To celebrate Mother’s Day and honour the Nyonya heritage. To see friends you have not seen in ages. To plan activities and events where you and others can have fun. To do something that brings delight and creates warm memories. To learn something new about health and wellness. To help members of the community and to be helped in return.

These things are daily achievements. These things, to many who are involved, help keep them and you going.

Anyhow, I lastly want to say – please remember to purchase your tickets for Cultural Day. Ticket prices are markedly reduced from past years to make it more affordable for families and members like you.

JONATHAN LOOI

The President's Message

Preparations for this cultural event are underway and we have half a month to go!

Tickets may still be purchased through our internal ticket sellers Kathy and Helen and at various advertised locations throughout Calgary.

The performing arts program will feature many dances and vocals from our Southeast Asian region. While the Malay, Chinese and Indian influences are often highlighted each year, our guests may be enchanted by the Portugese influence of Malacca.

A selection of snacks, mains, drinks and desserts will showcase the cuisines of Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei.

Guests may also explore traditional arts & crafts, view creations by our talented community members, and even try a hands-on workshop!

Year on year, we attempt to try new things at our largest annual cultural event. How many things can you spot that is new this year?

Doors open at 11:30am. Performances will start at 1pm.

On the evening of Saturday, May 27, an informative Eye Health Talk was given to members of the MSBCA community and the public. This was presented by Dr. Lauren Sim, who touched upon many topics:

• Why is it important to have routine eye exams,

• What an eye exam includes,

• Who/what is covered by Alberta Health and Wellness,

• How diabetes, high blood pressure, systemic diseases such as arthritis, and certain medications can impact the eyes.

After her short lecture, Dr. Sim delightfully took questions from the audience and then a one-on-one basis. We hope everyone had an educational and enjoyable experience!

Story by Rina Robertson

MAY 2

At the suggestion by Chief Chef, Sandy Chan, to consider making Ban Jian Kuih at our next cooking session, the Rasa Sayang team of trainee chefs eagerly gathered together on May 2 in an attempt to make the perfect Ban Jian Kuih, a warm  crispy pancake  dotted with butter,  generously sprinkled with crushed peanuts and sugar, topped with a dollop of cream corns.   Ban Jian Kuih is one of those nostalgia foods that many of us grew up eating as comfort food, so it is no surprise that Rosalind also has her own recipe to share with us.

Armed with enthusiasm and determination, our group of chefs-in-training experimented with different ways to perfect the technique.  We quickly found out the

two recipes gives a slightly different texture.  Preference would depend on whether one likes the thinner crispy version as compared to a thicker, chewy yet soft and bouncy texture.  A perfect Ban Jian Kuih would be crispy  on the outside while soft on the inside as well as crunchy.  With two recipes to try out, the more we made, the more we ate.  In the end, we literally had Ban Jian Kuih coming out of our ears!!

Hopefully through our various trials and errors, our Ban Jian Kuih can live up to Chief Chef Sandy's expectation and that it is good enough to serve at one of Jesse’s CKT Sunday lunch.  We appreciate Chief Chef Sandy and Rosalind for sharing their wonderful recipe.

MAY 16

Want to spice up your life?  By that we meant perking up your palate with a bowl of

distinct hot, sour, spicy soup with generous herbs and fragrant spices.

At our May 16 cooking session, we had our focus on the classic Thai Tom Yum Koong, internationally known and widely served in the Asian countries and has been popularized around the world.  Led by Theresa Strom, the Rasa Sayang team made everything from scratch.  For the  required punch, we used only fresh ingredients and spices to get the authentic taste.   For good measure, we made a great big pot as it turns out to be so irresistibly tasty that left everyone eyeing for more.  For a taste of something equally delicious but completely different, it is a nice change to tickle our taste buds.
