With a history dating back to 1971, AFC Portchester truly came into
existence when the club was merged with another Portchester side;
Castle Royals in the 2002/03 season.
This merger came on the back of AFC’s acceptance, after many
successful years across various Portsmouth leagues, to the
Hampshire League in 1998, wherein we rose from Division 3 to the
top flight by way of successive promotions.
Now consolidated as the most successful side in the locality, AFC
Portchester has become one of Hampshire’s biggest clubs, with a
thriving Youth section coaching children from age 4 upwards, right
through to a Veterans squad.
Another significant milestone for the club came in June 2011, when
we were honoured with The Queens's Award for Voluntary Service
(MBE) for Groups, in recognition of our importance within the local
community.
The following season saw the 1st team gain promotion to the
Sydenham’s (Wessex) Premier Division, after securing the runners
up position, and our reserves also taking runners up spot in the
newly formed Wyvern combination East Division to gain promotion
to the Wyvern Premier league.
The next phase in our club history started with the appointment of
Graham Rix as manager in 2013. Graham’s CV includes
international caps for England, captaining Arsenal and managing
Chelsea. His vast experience was instrumental in developing our
facilities and ethos, as we push for promotion to the next step of the
football pyramid.
Recent successes include: capturing the Russell Cotes Cup in
2013 and 2017, the League Cup and a 3rd place finish in 2015; a
season which also saw one of our home-grown players join
Reading FC on professional terms, and winning the League Cup
once more in 2018, when we also reached the Fratton Park final of
the Hampshire Senior Cup.
Our current manager is Mick Catlin, a stalwart of local football
having been manager and assistant manager at Gosport Borough
over nine years, during which he won multiple trophies and lead the
team out in the most prestigious tie in their history, the FA Trophy
final at Wembley. Mick has also held senior positions at Andover
Town, Fleet Town, Chichester City and Petersfield Town, in a
career which has made him one of the most popular figures in non-
league football.
For the 1st time this season the Stags have the sweet taste of victory after a hard fought 1-0 win over Willand Rovers at the Testwood Community Stadium last night.
The Stags gave a home debut to former Saints U23 player Mohammed Richard Bakary, who wore the No 11 shirt and midfielder Pip Nolan made his 2nd debut for the club. The 3rd debutant was Robert Bradley, a recent signing from Wimborne Town. There was a total of 5 changes to the Starting eleven with the other changes seeing Matt Bozier return to the No 3 shirt, whilst Mitchell Byrne also came in, wearing the No 2 shirt. Totton were without Jack Masterton and Alex Haynes through injury, whilst Matt Simm, Matt Hartmann and Liam Callaghan dropped out of the starting eleven with Hartmann and Callaghan being named onb the bench. The other three subs were Liam Farrugia, Gowan Stares and Ollie Bradley.
The game started at quite a pace with Willand going straight on the attack and they forced a corner which Jack Smith put out for a 2nd corner and when that arrived the Totton defence managed to deal with it.
The Stags went straight up the other end and Craig Feeney forced Willand keeper Mike Searle to parry away a firm shot from the Stags striker. Willand then tried to carry the ball forward and Pip Nolan just stole the ball off of a Willand defender and he strode forward and fired low past Searle to give the Stags a 3rd minute lead. This was the 1st time Totton have the lead in a game this season.
Willand reacted well to going behind and they played a long ball downfield for Dean Stamp who almost got in on goal, but Totton managed to clear the danger.
The end to end theme continued with Bakary showing some lovely footwork out on the left and he fooled a couple of Willand defenders before cutting in and trying an audacious lob over Searle from a tight-ish angle but the Willand keeper plucked the ball from the air.
Then the visitors almost got Stamp free again down the left, but Stags defender Mitchell Byrne got in to put the ball out for a corner.
It was still end to end and Alex Cull very cleverly spotted Lewis Beale in space and he quickly bowled the ball out to him, Beale had lots of space to run into and he bore down on the Willand defence before he let rip with a shot that Searle got down to save.
The Stags then almost scored when a bit of a mix up in the Willand defence saw the ball hit the back of Feeney’s leg and it rolled close to the goal line before being cleared.

The game then went through a stage where it became niggly and there were a few tackles flying in and as a result there were bookings for Byrne and and Feeney as well as Rob Norrish. The chances became fewer during this niggly spell but with 10 minutes of the half left Willand sudden-ly had a spell where they were on top and in that time there were chances for Josh Searle whose low cross/shot was saved by Cull, then Ryan Guppy crossed for Luke Mortimore and he pulled another save out of Alex Cull, in fact that man Mortimore was looking very lively sending a low 20 yard drive inches wide, then he fired in another low drive that Cull gathered.
Totton then had a free kick around 25 yards out on the right, it was floated towards the back post by Bakary, the ball avoided everybody but it ran out to the left where Matt Bozier hooked it back into the 6 yard box towards Beale and a desperate header by centre half Joe Curtis put the ball just over the bar for a corner. Then not long after Rob Bradley had a shot from distance that was deflected wide.
Willand went back on the attack in added time and they earned themselves a free kick out on the right, it was taken by Mortimore and the kick whistled across the face of the Totton goal.
The last chance of the half saw the Stags earn a throw in on the right, Nolan threw the ball into the area where Craig Feeney got his head to it, only to see Searle make a save.
Half Time: AFC Totton 1 Willand Rovers 0
After a breathless 1st half Totton came out with a real intent and Feeney got in a cross from the right that was not too far away from sub Ollie Bradley, who was just out jumped by a Willand cen-tre half.
Lewis Beale was impressing, and he sent in a strike that forced Searle into making a save. Totton then put together a good move that ended with Rob Bradley showing some good skill before he played in Feeney and Feeney was denied when his shot from a tight angle was saved by Searle.
Willand then had a shot on goal in the 58th minute that was not too far wide for the visitors. The game was still breathless, there was no let up in the action at all.
Lewis Beale then made a terrific run before he let fly with a shot that forced Searle into making a save. Totton then moved forward again and Bozier got down the left before he put in a low cross that a Willand defender very nearly put into his own net, but the Stags had to settle for a corner.
How the game was only 1-0 I don’t know, there had been so many chances for both sides. It real-ly was a great watch for the spectators.
Willand made a double substitution with Douglas Camillo coming on for Dean Stamp and Ben Bickie coming on for Rob Norrish and suddenly Willand looked even more dangerous than be-fore, for around 10 minutes or so they really gave the Stags some problems.
That man Camillo, who had not long been on the pitch sent in a thunderous shot that forced Alex Cull to make a terrific save at full stretch. Then the other substitute Ben Bickie was creating a bit of havoc out on the left and he worked his way into the Totton area before he sent in a thunder-ous shot that smacked against the Totton crossbar.
Totton went back on the attack and forced a corner from which Dave Allen headed over. Then another Totton Sub Liam Callaghan played in Feeney whose deflected shot was saved by Searle. Liam Callaghan then got in a shot that was charged down.
Then the visitors really did finish strongly with Mortimore pulling a save out of Cull and sub Bickie had two shots saved in quick succession by Cull in added time.
It was a bit nerve wracking in those dying moments but the Stags held on!

AFC Totton pulled off a tremendous 3-2 win at The Creek, the home of Bristol Manor Farm this afternoon with Liam Callaghan getting his 1st goal in a Stags shirt and Craig Feeney netting himself a brace.
Louis Langdown made two changes to the starting eleven that faced Willand Rovers last time out, Matt Simm came in for Mitchell Byrne, who dropped to the bench and Liam Callaghan came in for Lewis Beale, who is injured. The Stags bench consisted of Ollie Bradley, Matt Hartmann, Gowan Stares, Liam Farrugia and Mitchell Byrne (as mentioned above).
In what was an even first half Totton had the 1st effort of the game and it came in the 3rd minute from Feeney, who tried a low shot that lacked sufficient power to trouble Ben Johns.
The home side started probing the Stags defence and the lively Jordan Metters put in a decent low cross that was cleared at the near post and Metters then tried a shot from the edge of the box that Stags keeper Alex Cull dealt with quite easily.
Totton then fell a goal behind after just seven minutes when Joseph McClennan picked up a clearance from a corner around 20 yards out, the Farm No 7 looked up and sent a shot rifling past Cull. Maybe the Stags could have closed down the space to prevent the shot, but there was no doubting the quality of the strike.
Totton reacted brilliantly to going a goal behind because within a minute they were level. Feeney picked the ball up on the right of the area, he then turned and tried what looked like a shot, the ball hit a Farm defender before finding its way to Liam CALLAGHAN who poked the ball home from. a yard out. This was Callaghans 1st competitive goal for the Stags.
Totton then very nearly took the lead when Jack Smith’s downward header forced John to push it wide, a little while later Feeney put in a cross that was met by Callaghan but the header was blocked by a defender who was stood very close to him.
Then came a spell when the ‘Farmy army’ were marginally on top, in that period Jamie Adams had a shot palmed away by Alex Cull, Metters had a deflected shot gathered by Cull then Cull was called into action again when he had to make a save from Lloyd Mills. There was then a shot narrowly wide from Joseph Tumelty, then goal scorer McClennan was released down the Farm left, he held off the attentions of Totton’s Matt Simm and he shot low at goal and Cull was on hand to make a routine save.

TOTTON
Just after the half hour Totton forced a corner on the right that was taken by Richard Bakary and Jack Smith got up to meet with a thumping header that was stopped on the line, A few Totton players felt that the ball had hit the arm of the defender but referee Andrew Shepperd was having none of it. Then Pip Nolan played a lovely ball over Farm left back Mason Winter and Callaghan got in to put over a cross that Farm managed to get clear.
Just before the break Lewis Leigh Gilchrist played in Winter who had overlapped and Winter forced Cull into making a decent save.
Half Time: Bristol Manor Farm 1 AFC Totton 1
Totton started the 2nd half well and they were awarded a free kick in the ‘D’ around 20 yards out, Pip Nolan stood over the ball with Richard Bakary and Bakary was the one who took the kick but he sent it a few feet over the Farm crossbar. Then Totton’s Rob Bradley got in on the action, firing wide of the left hand post from the edge of the box.
Totton had been excellent since the break and they were rewarded when Rob Bradley played a superb ball through for FEENEY who got in behind the Farm defence and the Totton striker lobbed the ball over the advancing Ben John to give his side the lead.
Totton were awarded another free kick 20 yards from goal after a foul on Bradley, Pip Nolan took the free kick and passed it sideways to Feeney who had a shot that forced John to make a save.
A rare attack from the hosts resulted in a corner on the right and when it arrived in the box it was met by Adams who saw his effort brilliantly tipped away by the outstretched Cull. It really was a save out of the top drawer.
Then n 70 minutes Totton increased their lead further when Robin Nicholls played in FEENEY who picked up the ball on the left of the area, the Stags striker then carried the ball across the box before shooting low into the bottom left hand corner of the net.
The home side then started to push forward in an attempt to get back in the game and substitute Lewis Bamford showed some good footwork before he curled a shot inches wide of the left hand post.
On 79 minutes Totton very nearly had a 4th goal when Craig Feeney received a pass from Sub Matt Hartmann, Feeney tried to lift the bouncing ball over keeper John and it looked like he had succeeded until the keeper threw up and arm to get fingertips to it, and this was enough to prevent the ball from dropping into his net.
The home side were now taking gambles by pushing extra bodies forward and Tumelty had a shot saved comfortably by Cull, then shortly afterwards sub Rogers sent a wild effort well wide.
Totton had been looking threatening for most of the game and Matt Simm got in an angled effort that forced John to get down and save.
Totton had been comfortable in truth, dominating the 2nd half. They had defended well when they needed to and they looked dangerous when they attacked. However, with the 90 minutes up they were given a scare when Rogers reduced the deficit slipping the ball past Cull from inside the box. It was a goal out of nothing really. It made added time a little nervy for those Totton fans who had travelled to the West Country, but Louis Langdown’s side survived without any further scares, allowing them to come back to Hampshire with a richly deserved three points.
