Notes From The PublishersIf all goes to plan this could be the last Totton Gazette that are reading in this particular format! We issue six magazines on a regular basis, covering Andover, Eastleigh, Romsey and Wellow, Salisbury and the villages throughout the Test Valley in addition to this publication, and, as from the October issues, the plan is to standardize the formats – which means essentially making them all B5, a size a little smaller than the current size.

As reported in the August issue of the Totton Gazette, our website is now fully operational and offers a very cheap way of on-line advertising. Additionally, we now hae our franchise website (www.gazettefranchising.com) up-and-running, offering the opportunity to anyone interested in starting their own magazine under the guidance of Gazette Publications Limited, with our many years experience of producing local, community-type publications.

Anyone taking on a publication franchise within our operation would be required to sell advertising as their principal function, but anyone having doubt about their ability in this respect would be welcome to carry out some selling for any/all of our current magazines (and get paid for it!) to see if it suits them. What could be fairer than that?

As always, we welcome articles and diary dates for publication, and are particularly happy to support local charities. So, if you have an event coming up, please don’t hesitate to send your details to [email protected], or telephone us on 01794-516111.

Working Hard but Going Nowhere?asks Surinder Bellamy

Slogging away in the gym, exercising hard and not seeing the results you want? Training hard but not making improvements or seeming to get anywhere is frustrating when, once upon a time, that same routine was getting you fitter and helping you to lose the weight that now refuses to come off.

This is what people refer to as being in a plateau, either in terms of your weight-loss or your fitness and it is very dispiriting when all your efforts seem to be for nought. The same things that used to work are now producing diminishing results and you’re wondering what else to do? However, to understand why you’re stuck at this same point, you need to understand how your body improves and adapts to exercise.

This is explained by something called homeostatis, which is the body’s ability to make physiological adaptations. The body’s ultimate aim is to protect you from anything that might be a danger to you, therefore anything that is a ‘stressor’ to the body in the sense that it forces the body to alter its temperature, oxygen consumption and PH levels, the body will react to by adjusting those levels if the stressor is applied frequently enough. In other words, it will learn to cope, for if it did not weight-loss would continue to a point of danger.

Using the heat and cold as examples, if you put your hands in very cold water, initially you will shiver as the body tries to raise your temperature, but eventually it will adjust and you will be able to

tolerate the cold more easily. Equally, constant exposure to heat will bring

adaptation and the body will sweat to adjust temperature, but you will better tolerate the heat.

Exercise is also a ‘stressor’ (though a stress-reliever),

because it is a process that forces the body to make

adaptations to temperature and oxygen consumption and

PH levels. The more you exercise, the more the body fights to cope and adjust, which it will succeed

in doing and the result of that process is called

‘fitness’. Therefore, you constantly

g e t f i t t e r and the

weight

comes off, which is great and then it a l l s l o w s

down and you stop making

improvements because you are no longer doing something with which the body cannot cope.

When the body no longer perceives the exercise you are performing as a new stimulus it will not change to adapt to the exercise. Your body will stay at the same level of fitness. At this point exercising will not produce any fitness improvements or further weight-loss, and you are said to be on a plateau.

So what can you do about it?The answer is to make the body keep on having to adapt by regularly making changes to your training programme. This is called periodisation and means switching your training programme regularly to ensure that the body does not become used to doing the same thing over and over again and get bored.

A simple example of this would be to change your training programme every four to six weeks. Another method would be to change the reps or weights you do or the level you use. For cardio, try introducing interval training or switching from spinning to running or vice versa. It’s all about changing intensity, duration and frequency. With an eating plan, change the food types you are having and vary the content and volumes.

It’s all about change and staying one step ahead, but view it positively because with each change your strength and fitness increase with the adaptation.

Wild Mushroom TagliatelleFrom late summer until the first frost, wild mushrooms

are plentiful. If you are foraging for mushrooms yourself, then never eat fungi that you are unable

to identify absolutely as some are poisonous. Using pictures in a book may not be that reliable as there are subtle differences between the many varieties.

Either take with you an expert guide or of course, just buy them! For more information on wild mushrooms, I would recommend visiting themushroombasket.com.

This recipe serves two.

Cooking with IanIan Wooldridge,

Head Chef, at Kimbridge Farm,

near RomseySeasonal & Local Produce

Recipe

Olive oil1 red onion, peeled & very finely diced2 cloves of garlic, peeled & minced or very finely diced

250gms of wild mushrooms (Chantarelles, Trompette, Oyster, Portobello, Ceps/Porcini)

Little salt250gms of tagliatelle or any style of ribbon

pasta

200ml of double cream (or low-fat crème fraiche, if you are counting the calories!)

Handful of fresh parsley, finely chopped¼ tsp of dried oregano½ tsp of dried basilPinch of dried red chilli flakes (optional)Freshly ground black pepper75gms of parmesan shavings

Shopping List:

Method: Heat a little olive oil in a large pan or skillet. Add the red onion & garlic and fry for about 2-3 minutes. Prepare the mushrooms. It is important not to remove the stems of the wild mushrooms as here lies a lot of the flavour. Keep any very small mushrooms whole and roughly slice the larger ones. Add the mushrooms to the pan and gently sauté them for about 4 minutes. Meanwhile, bring a pan of slightly salted water to the boil and cook the pasta for 5-6 minutes or to the packet instructions. When the pasta is cooked,

drain in a colander and keep warm by placing a lid over it. Now add the cream to the mushrooms, followed by the fresh parsley, dried herbs and chilli flakes if using. You can use as much or little of the chilli flakes as you like, but just a small pinch gives an interesting bite to the dish. Mix the pasta in with the mushroom sauce and season with freshly-milled black pepper to taste. Serve into warmed bowls and sprinkle over the parmesan shavings with maybe a separate side salad or garlic bread. This recipe serves two persons.

All The Fun of the Fairstarring David EssexTue 11 - Sat 15 October 2011 Tue - Sat 7.30pm/Thu & Sat 2.00pm

The East End Funfair Musical direct from the West End

Direct from London’s West End. David Essex and Boogie Nights creator Jon Conway present a roller coaster ride of a musical, underscored by a helter-skelter of David Essex hits and album favourites.

Dodgems and motorbikes, crafty cons and candy floss, fairground horses and fights, along with romance and rock and roll bring out the carnival atmosphere, but beware… all is not always fun at the fair!

The Mayflower has kindly donated four pairs of tickets for the show on October 11th. For a chance to win a pair of tickets tell us the name of one of David Essex’s hit records.

Entries should be sent by post to Totton Gazette, Unit 9, Greatbridge Business Park, Budds Lane, Romsey, Hampshire, SO51 0HA or e-mailed to [email protected], to be received by 2nd October. Winners will be notified by 5th October.

Diary of a Fitness CentreWhilst the centre is welcoming new and existing members through its doors, we are also busy daily out and about – here’s a snapshot of what happens when we take the mobile unit (otherwise our van!) out and about!!

Monday – Ian runs a circuit class in the local village at Lockerley – it’s very sociable and long term participants rub shoulders with new people each Monday. There is always great banter during the breaks, but Ian makes sure everyone works well during this energetic hour!

Tuesday – An elderly bed ridden client has seen great improvements since we started visiting him at home – he is now up and walking around, even to the point of gently coping outside down his quiet country lane with our support. Very satisfying for him and us.

Wednesday – Craig’s turn at circuits at Wellow Village Hall – Craig’s style is different to Ian’s, as are the exercises, so there are people who go to both just for the variety! Same sociable atmosphere and great for us to offer our services out in the community.

Thursday – A husband and wife team are building up their stamina and strength without coming to the centre! We have helped them buy equipment for their home and train them there. It suits their very busy lifestyle, so we do the travelling instead of them.

Friday – A very loyal member is recovering from a foot operation. She was very keen for us to help her put together a pre and post op programme, and now after a successful procedure, she is looking to progress slowly but surely to full recovery exercise wise within the next few months.

producing more than just power from your roof top

EARN UP TO £1500 for 25 YEARS

A Solar PV (Photovoltaic) system installed on your roof allows you to harness the sun’s energy and convert it into electricity. You will get paid for every unit that your system generates whether you use it or not; you will also get paid for every unit that you export back to the electricity grid, further more reducing your electricity annual bill by producing and using your own generated electricity. Suitable for homes, schools, businesses or community buildings.

“In April 2010 the Government introduced a new scheme, The Feed in Tariff Scheme or FiTS for short.

What is FiTS all about? Its the Government’s attempt to meet its European targets on the provision of renewable energy. It means you can make an excellent income and return on investment, typically 8-12% per year for 25 years (index linked to RPI) whilst doing your bit for the environment.

Protect yourself from rising energy prices, with a payback period typically between 8-10 years and invest in Solar PV on your roof top.”

Solar PV arrays are sized in kWp (kilowatt-peak). A southern oriented, minimally shaded 2kWp array will cover 16m2 approx and each year will generate approx 1668kWh of electricity, save 1 tonne CO2 from entering the atmospshere, annual savings of £855.68, Index linked and tax free guaranteed for 25 years.

Why go solar?Great InvestmentWith the introduction of the Government Feed In Tariffs, solar electricity has become a cost effective source of renewable energy offering typical returns of 8-10% p.a. tax free, much better than savings deposit returns. At current energy prices, your system should pay back within an average of about 8-10 years. However if energy prices continue to rise as they are, the system will pay for itself a lot sooner. Combine this with the slow growth in the economy and the Bank of England remaining at an all time low, there aren't many better ways to boost your income, make your savings work better and be environmentally friendly at the same time.

Protect yourself against the ever increasing electricity pricesIn April 2010 the Government introduced a new scheme, The Feed in Tariff Scheme or FiTS for short. What is FiTS all about? It's the Government’s attempt to meet its European targets on the provision of renewable energy. It means you can make an excellent income and return on investment of typically 8-12% per year for 25 years (index linked to RPI) whilst doing your bit for the environment.

As natural resource levels diminish, electricity prices are expected to continue to rise. Also it is anticipated that further increases will be levied to help pay for the Feed in Tariff Scheme. So if you don’t act now you may be paying towards those that do.

A Solar PV system will give you partial protection against rising prices as you will not be paying these inflated prices for most of your daytime usage. Not only will you get paid for every unit of electricity that your system generates, whether you use it or export it back to the national grid, but you will also get paid for any surplus energy that you do export.

How Solar PV WorksSolar PV Panels are an assembly of Solar PV cell modules made up of semi-conductor materials. Daylight is absorbed by the panels that then convert the solar power into into dc (direct current) electricity. This dc current is converted to ac (alternating current) using an inverter. The electricity is then consumed in the house or exported back to the National Grid.

The Solar PV panels use light, so even on a cloudy day they will still generate electricity, only their effectiveness would be reduced slightly. Typically the panels would be installed onto a southerly facing roof at an angle between 25-50 degrees to maximise their efficiency and generate the maximum electricity possible.

Solar PV arrays are sized in kWp (kilowatt-peak), a southern oriented, minimally shaded 2kWp array will cover 16m2 approx and each year will:• generate approx 1668kWh of electricity• save 1 tonne CO2 from entering the atmosphere• annual savings of £855.68 Index linked and tax free guaranteed for

25 years

With the rise in energy prices and the FiTS being Indexed linked, currently there can be no better investment option.

CEI Electrical Limited are fully accredited with the Microgeneration Certification scheme (MCS), the governing body that covers Solar PV installers and Solar PV products, along with the Renewable Energy Assurance Scheme (REAL) which is the consumer code for renewable technologies.

Theatretrain was founded in 1992 by teacher and director Kevin Dowsett, who had a dream of creating opportunities for children in the performing arts who were living outside of the London area. Nineteen years on there are now over 90 centres across the UK offering professional, affordable training in Drama, Dance and Singing as well as the unique experience of performing on a London West End stage every other year – something that no other performing arts school

across the country currently offers. Not to mention shows at local venues in between, and even international travel and exchanges as well.

F r o m 8 t h O c t o b e r , Theatretrain will be opening their first classes in Southampton for children aged between 6-18 years of age at Regents Park Community College. Classes will be held every Saturday during term times from 10am until 1pm. We take our slogan, “The Company that loves to perform,” very literally and most of our class work is preparation and build up to a final performance. Performing together improves social skills and by learning self-expression, we come to understand ourselves better and grow in confidence. The rest of our classes are focused on inspiring the children’s own imaginations and nurturing potential through classes prepared by professional teachers.

If you would like to learn more about Theatretrain, or if you are interested in working for us as a Teacher then please visit our website www.theatretrain.co.uk or contact Karina Bull on 07971-894957. You can also email us at [email protected]. Get on the Train now and take part in our next show in a top London West End Theatre!

The Anorak Man talks aboutFLOOR PIEMy wife has always made a point of

telling our friends that my cooking skills are awful. I’ve had problems tossing pancakes

when they either get stuck to the ceiling or come down in bits all over the floor. At times I’ve had to

scrape the bits off the ceiling and place them back into the frying pan before my wife found out.

So I was very pleased to see a poll commissioned by Italian pasta brand Giovanni Rana stating that many dinner party devotees have a nasty habit of serving their dinner guests food that has been cooked badly and often dropped on the floor. According to this poll of two thousand British consumers though, fifteen percent admitted to serving “floor pie” (ie. that’s food that had fallen on the floor, ten percent knowingly made feasts for guests using out of date food and thirteen percent said they had accidentally poisoned

themselves and their guests with their cooking. A few people also admitted defrosting food with irons, hairdryers and sun beds. At least my “ceiling pancakes” don’t poison anyone.

The study also found men to be marginally more experimental in the kitchen than women – twenty-six percent against twenty-four percent - but the male experimentation comes at a cost, with twenty-seven percent managing to set their kitchen or house on fire while on cooking duties and a further twenty-one percent admitting to having singed their eyebrows or burned off some hair in the process. The study also revealed that one third of Britons still can’t master basic techniques, like boiling an egg, while men pretended to cook food from scratch when they actually bought food ready prepared from the shop. Now come on you guys and own up if you’ve ever been guilty any this.

Perhaps my cooking skills are not that bad after all and my wife should give me more credit!
