What are the NLN Learning Materials?
• The NLN-MDIT (National Learning Network - Materials Development & Implementation Team) at Becta has commissioned interactive learning materials that span the FE curriculum
• Phase 1 materials = 300 hours of learning (now available)
• Phase 2 materials = 200 hours of learning (under development; final products by July 2003)
• The materials are available to both FE and HE users
• Phase 3 materials = 300 hours of learning (commissioned and out to tender now; final products by July 2004)

Who is involved?
• Becta NLN-MDIT are responsible for the content
• JISC funded RSCs (Regional Support Centres) support the FE community
• EDINA supplies user support and a backup service
• Granada Learning developed the CAT (Content Access Tool)
• MIMAS provides technical support and hosts the service

Why use the NLN Learning Materials?
• a high quality and highly interactive resource
• designed as small standalone chunks - to enable lecturers to incorporate them into their own teaching resources
• cover a huge range of subjects and key skills resources
• designed specifically for the post-16 market
• packaged to L & T specifications - they are tagged with metadata, which can be used in VLEs and digital repositories

What subjects do the materials cover?
• health and safety, lighting, design, music technology, travel and tourism, and childcare
•Key skills - writing reports, communication skills, authoring a CV, identifying targets...
• business studies, health studies, art and design, floristry, amenity horticulture, mathematics and generic science

Scenario 1
Name: Kate NicholPosition: Beauty Therapist TutorProblem: Students have little experience using computers, but need to improve their research and information gathering skills. No spare time available to create extra resources. Solution: Beauty therapy specific modules can be used for research and to reinforce theory taught in class. NLN Learning Materials in key skills cover research methods. Use of the materials will introduce many students to online learning.

Name: Trevor FordPosition: Undergraduate StudentProblem: Has to present his research findings to his fellow students. He is very nervous and unsure of the best way todo this.Solution: NLN Learning Materials in key skills cover presentation skills. This includes how to structure his presentation, and the type of content and language he should try to use. He also finds some interesting modules covering how to write formal reports.
