They areloved, nurtured and carefully prepared for a globallyinfluenced life through a public education system regard-ed as the best in Minnesota and one of the foremost in thecountry. We care about the future of each and every oneof them and want them all to reach their full potential. We know they represent our future, too.

Ninety-eight percent of our residents describe theirquality of life in Edina as good or excellent – a MetroArea leading percentage. Contributing factors are notonly our excellent schools but our highly regarded publicfacilities and services, safe neighborhoods, our extraordi-narily responsive fire and emergency medical personnel, our stellar park and recreational facilities and programsand our premier retail shopping and dining establish-ments.

Edina has become amodel for suburban devel-opment with high qualityhousing choices in beauti-ful neighborhoods for allstages of a person’s life. Itis a city with a constant for-ward vision; whetherenhancing the health andlongevity of our citizens, becoming an ever greenercommunity, developingmore extensive systems ofwalkways and bikeways orimproving our motorizedtransportation system, bothinternally and as part of

the broader regional system, we know what it will take tobe a successful 21st century community.

Whether you live or work in Edina, or are simply vis-iting our city, we encourage everyone to use the EdinaCommunity Guide to help make your Edina experienceeven more enjoyable. We think it is a special place andwe trust you will, too.

Residents support parks, arenas and the arts whenthey pick up six-pack of pale ale or a bottle of Cabernetfrom one of three liquor stores operated by the city ofEdina.

Visitors to the Southdale location this year will also seea newly remodeled store. Renovations include a newentryway, floor plan, checkout counters, and ceiling andlights. A permanent tasting area was also constructed inthe remodeled store.

The Southdale location is one of three stores in the city.Director of Liquor Operations Steve Grausam said thethree locations are best known for their wine selection. While wine sales outpace liquor and beer sales, Grausamsaid Edina Liquor also boasts a large selection of singlemalt Scotch and a growing variety of craft beers. Morethan 1,000 varieties of wine, 250 brands of beer and 400brands of liquor are carried.

Every year, about $1 million in net income from Edina’sthree municipal stores support city facilities like theEdina Art Center, Braemer Ice Arena, Edinborough Parkand neighborhood parks.

“By supporting our stores it also supports the commu-nity,” said Steve Grausam, director of liquor operationsfor the city. “We give back 100 percent.”

The profits are also put toward street repairs, and inthe past have helped purchase police and fire equipment.Between $400,000 and $600,000 goes into the city’s generalfund. Altogether, the city estimates residents save about 4percent annually on property taxes with liquor storeincome.

“Whether they shop at our stores or not, they’re bene-fiting,” said Grausam.

The liquor stores partner with local organizations forevents throughout the year, including the Edina Chamberof Commerce’s annual Taste of Edina each spring. Inaddition, in-store tasting events are offered most Fridaysand Saturdays, often in conjunction with monthly liquor, beer and wine promotions.

Edina is also working with the cities of Richfield andBloomington to prevent underage drinking through theTri-City Partners Coalition for Healthy Youth andCommunities. The liquor stores will educate about effectsof underage drinking and help deter underage possessionwith messages on shopping bags.

In Edina, residents and their homes are safe thanks todedicated Police and Fire Departments.

The city of Edina has one of the lowest crime rates inHennepin County – a feat for a first-ring suburb border-ing the state’s largest city.

The Edina Police Department is led by Chief JeffLong, an Edina native who first joined the force in 1987 asa community service officer.

Long oversees a department of 73 people, two K-9 unitsand one animal control officer. Among them are 46 policeofficers, including the 34 men and women in the patroldivision.

The patrol division protects Edina’s 16-square-miles 24hours a day. Each year the officers respond to thousandsof calls for service ranging from suspicious noises todeath investigations.

The 25,000-square-foot police station at City Hall alsofeatures a state-of-the-art 911 communications center. Thecity’s nine full-time and two part-time dispatchers andtheir supervisor work around the clock at the EdinaCommunications Center to help keep Edina safe. In 2011they handled more than 74,000 calls for police, fire andmedical services in Edina and Golden Valley.

In Edina, firefighters do more than put out flames. Most of the 31 firefighters in the full-time FireDepartment double as paramedics, providing the citywith ambulance and emergency medical service.Firefighters also lead fire prevention and communityhealth programs.

Under Chief Marty Scheerer’s leadership, the EdinaFire Department boasts one of the fastest response timesfor medical calls in the metro area – four minutes and 19seconds from call to door. In 2011, firefighters respondedto just over 4,600 calls for service, about 80 percent ofwhich were for emergency medical services.

When possible, Edina firefighters like to stop firesbefore they start. Fire Marshal Tom Jenson leads the FirePrevention Bureau, which includes two inspectors, a pub-lic educator and fire prevention clerk. Every year, thedivision of the Fire Department conducts close to 70 safe-ty presentations, reaching nearly 2,500 children in Edina.

In addition, the Bureau enforces the state Fire Code byregularly inspecting the city’s commercial buildings andmulti-family housing units, checking for working firealarms, sprinkler systems and more. Individual homeinspections for fire safety are completed by request.

Want to see the place where the decision to name Edinawas made? The nonprofit Edina Historical Society can help.

Executive Director Marci Matson said the Edina HistoryMuseum, operated by the society, assists nearly as manypeople with property research as it does genealogy.

“People really want to know what their neighborhoodlooked like and why their street is named what it is,” saidMatson, the only paid employee in the volunteer-supportedorganization.

Lois Lane in southwest Edina, by the way, was not namedfor the famous “Superman” character. Both the surveyorand developer of that neighborhood had wives named Lois, she said.

The museum holds assessor records for the city ofEdina, including a photo of each house taken in 1959, aswell as information on building updates and sales over theyears. Homes built after 1959 typically have a photo on filefrom the year they were built. Copies of the photos are avail-able.

The museum also stores maps and aerial photos to giveresidents a snapshot of development over the years. A set of1937 aerial photos predate much of the city’s suburbandevelopment, showing mostly farmland where houses now

stand. In addition to its research library, the museum features a

new exhibit each year. This fall, its latest will be on growingup in Edina. The museum is also a popular destination forfield trips and group tours, and hosts several annual eventsincluding antique appraisals in September and snow par-ties in the winter.

The Edina Historical Society also operates the EdinaHistorical Center at Frank Tupa Park, home to theMinnehaha Grange Hall and Cahill School. The one-roomschoolhouse, built in 1864, is the oldest standing building inEdina. It was relocated in 1969 from the Cahill neighbor-hood of Edina to its present location. The grange was builtin 1879 as a meeting place for area farmers. The buildingalso served as Edina Village Hall from its incorporation in1888 to 1942 with many important events taking placeinside, including the decision to name Edina. The GrangeHall was moved in 1970 to Frank Tupa Park, where it is usedin conjunction with Cahill School for historical-themedfield trips, birthday parties and special events.

Museum hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursdays, and 10a.m. to noon Saturdays and by appointment.

The award-winning Edina School District is findinginnovative ways to serve each of its 7,990 students.

Led by Superintendent Ric Dressen, the district’s six ele-mentary schools, two middle schools and high school offer avariety of learning choices for students of all abilities.

Starting with kindergarten, parents can choose half- orfull-day lessons. The six elementary schools – Concord,Cornelia, Countryside, Creek Valley, Highlands andNormandale – also include neighborhood schools, a Frenchimmersion program and multi-age Continuous Progresslearning programs.

At Edina High School, students can choose from a host ofelectives and Advanced Placement courses. In the 2009-2010school year, more than 2,300 AP exams were administered inmore than 20 subject areas. Through the Post SecondaryEnrollment Options program, students can also take coursework at Minnesota public and private colleges. Ninety-fourpercent of seniors go to college and a recent survey of alum-ni 10 years after high school graduation showed 45 percentcompleted graduate school degrees or were pursuing grad-uate degrees.

Non-traditional learning experiences at Edina HighSchool include Cyber School, May Term Project, Mentor

Connection, Technical Career Education and the STRIVEmentoring program.

Through its work to educate students of all backgroundsEdina continues to rank at the top of state and nationalachievement lists. In 2010, Edina students placed firstamong Minnesota public school districts with combinedreading and math scores on state comprehensive assess-ments.

Edina is the only district in the country to be recognizedby all five of the following national publications: Forbes, which named Edina among “America’s 25 Best Schools forYour Housing Buck” in 2010; US News and World Report, which named Edina High School a Silver Medalist Schoolfor high performance on state tests and college readinessscores in 2009 and 2008; Family Circle Magazine, whichnamed Edina one of its top 10 towns in the nation for fami-lies in 2009; Newsweek, which included Edina High Schoolin its list of “America’s Best High Schools,” basing the rank-ing on the number of AP tests taken per student in 2011,2008, 2007 and 2003; and Sports Illustrated Magazine, whichranked Edina’s athletic program the eighth “Best HighSchool Athletic Program in the Nation” in 2005.

Golf courses abound in Edina and this year’s earlyspring added five weeks to the normal playing season.

The city of Edina operates 27-hole Braemar GolfCourse, nine-hole Braemar Executive Course and nine-hole Fred Richards Executive Golf Course.

The clubhouse has undergone renovations, includ-ing a new healthier menu and a sales system that cantrack rounds of golf for rewards, General ManagerTodd Anderson said.

Located on 500-acres of rolling hills and scenic lakessurrounded by oak ridges, Braemar maintains a pris-tine, secluded setting just minutes from the city center.Braemar boasts a pro shop, outdoor driving range, prac-tice putting green and banquet facilities. Golf lessonsand etiquette clinics are offered on site, as well as men’sand women’s golf leagues at various times and for play-ers of all abilities.

The city’s Fred Richards Executive Course givesgolfers the opportunity to decide between two differentflagstick positions on each hole, making the course adestination for beginning and experienced golfersalike.

The Braemar Golf Dome is closed for the year after a

fire damaged the dome in February. City staff is consid-ering options to open a golf dome before the winter.

Golfers at the private Edina Country Club can play18-holes on a course that was updated by Minnesotanative Tom Lehman, a former No. 1-ranked player whoregularly competes on the PGA and Champions tours, and his design partner Chris Brands.

“They touched every part of the golf course,” saidDirector of Golf Marty Lass. “Fairways, tees, greensand bunkers, all of the elements were really taken intoconsideration.”

The return to a more classic design includes dou-bling the number of bunkers, adding more variety andchallenge to the par-72 course.

The 18-hole private course at Interlachen CountryClub in Edina is also considered one of the finest inMinnesota and the nation. The Donald Ross design hasdelighted members since 1920. The par-73 courseincludes 14 bodies of water and is lined by more than2,500 trees. Interlachen has also hosted a number ofnational golfing events including the 2008 U.S. Women’sOpen.
