DID YOU KNOW? Know the dangers of hot cars and how to keep children safe

This time of year, we read horrible stories in the news about children being left in hot cars. This tragedy can happen to anyone, so it’s important to take steps to minimize risks. Don’t leave your children in the car, even for a few minutes, when temperatures are high. Even with the windows down, it can get hot inside fast, and small children may be unable to open doors to get out. Don’t let your children play in the car. They could easily shut themselves in a hot vehicle without you noticing. Store your purse, wallet, or cell phone in the backseat, next to your child’s car seat. You’ll reach for those things on your way out, reminding you of a sleeping or quiet child in the backseat. The Presenter: Shane Akerman is a convert to Catholicism and a former Protestant minister and university professor in Religion. He has graduate degrees in New Testament Studies, Ethics, and Theology. Shane serves as the Youth Minister and Confirmation Coordinator at St. Andrew and is currently finishing his PhD in Philosophy of Religion and Theology.

Things to Know Before Going to the Hospital - By Ginny Underwood Eucharistic Minister to the Sick

If people are going to the hospital for a scheduled procedure, they should ask their Priest for the Anointing of the Sick after Mass. If they have no advance notice, or if you are bringing someone to the hospital, you should tell the Admitting Office that they are Catholic and would like Holy Communion brought to them. We go every Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday to the Huntington Memorial Hospital. If we know someone who is in the Huntington Hospital, we can bring them communion. Otherwise, we can only visit those Catholics that have first been visited by the hospital Chaplin and who says they would like to have us visit.During illness, covalence care or due to advance age If you would like Holy Communion brought to you by an Extraordinary Eucharistic Minister to the Sick, at home or in a convalescent home, please call the Pastoral Care Office and let them know. A LETTER FROM CLAIRE BOGAARD, CHAIR OF THE RESTORATION COMMITTEE:Dear Friends, Once again, our historic Church is undergoing a restoration project. Our restoration craftsman, Evan Wilson, has removed two doors from the south entrance of the Church, near the Grotto. He is carefully repairing the doors, which have been damaged over time by the sun and rain, and then he will reassemble and re-install them. Two other doors on the south side of the Church and four doors on the north side by the Piazza, will also be restored.The original Bell Tower Chimes are in operation once again, providing parishioners and the entire neighborhood with the sound of music and a cordial welcome to St. Andrew Church.The Restoration Committee extends particular gratitude to all who support Bach to Broadway, our popular annual fundraising Concert. Our many restoration projects, which maintain the Church’s architectural and historic integrity, are funded by Concert revenues. Please be certain to mark your calendars for this year’s Bach to Broadway, which is scheduled for Friday, October 4.As Father Paul completes his service as our Pastor, it is important to note that the many restoration projects during the last 12 years would not have been realized without his support and guidance. St. Andrew has been truly blessed to have him as Pastor. The Restoration Committee joins with the Parish in thanking Father Paul for his strong leadership and endless energy, and for all he has accomplished. SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL MINISTRY NEWS:• The SVdP weekly food distribution resumes on Saturdays from 8:30 AM to 10:30 AM at the Pantry. • If you know someone who’s in need of food, please have them visit the Pantry on Saturday mornings. Thank you.Are you feeling that you need to get involved with the parish? Or perhaps with a ministry? Do you have a few hours to help for special events or even joining a ministry? St.Vincent de Paul would like to hear from you. We are in need of volunteers to join our ministry and also to help with special events. Our ministry provides assistant to help the poor of the parish with housing and food. Some of the events we hold are food distribution on Saturdays, visiting the poor that are requesting help, Café San Andrea, Thanksgiving Food baskets, Christmas food baskets and toy distribution and Spanish Dinners. These are some of the events where we are need of both help to setup and to participate. We also have monthly meetings where we join in prayer, discuss and organize our events. If you can volunteer even a few hours, it would be greatly appreciated. Dear Assembly Member, For Catholics, Confession is sacred, and the ability to confess our sins confidentially is essential to our religious belief and practice.  SB 360 would deny the right to confidential confessions to priests and to tens of thousands of Catholics who work with priests in parishes and other Church agencies and ministries. WWe agree with the intention behind SB 360: that all youth should be protected from abuse. But clergy and ministers are already “mandated reporters” — which means that when they hear information about suspected child abuse, they are requirequired to report this to law enforcement. And there is no evidence that denying tens of thousands of California Catholics the right to seek God’s forgiveness in Confession will protect children.

Dear Friends,

These past 12 years have been years of blessing and joy for me as your Pastor. Each priest assigned to a parish is made aware that their new community will become their family and he their shepherd. As I reflect back on these years, I can testify how true these words are. You, the people of St. Andrew Parish, have become my family and it has been a privilege to serve as your shepherd.

We have celebrated our faith together as we gather for Holy Mass each day. We have supported and embraced one another during times of loss, disappointment, sickness or the trials of life. And yes, we have experienced the need for reconciliation among the members of this family, only to be made stronger in our resolve to build a unified parish.

We have created a special parish community and you should be proud. I am proud. Each Sunday visitors approach me after Mass and share how unique St. Andrew is. They comment on the warm welcome they receive as they walk in and the spirit of love and joy in those around them. They praise the reverence of our Masses. They are in awe by the diversity of the congregation and how each person is respected and treated with Christian charity. This is the gift we bring to our local church, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. May this continue!

Words cannot express my gratitude for your love, support, friendship and generosity during these past 12 years as your Pastor. They have been years of great joy and I will always treasure them.

As I begin my new assignment as Pastor of St. Martin of Tours Parish in Los Angeles, I ask for your daily prayers. You will be in mine.

MINISTROS EUCARÍSTICOS EXTRAORDINARIOS PARA LOS ENFERMOS Y CONFINADOS:Cosas que debe saber antes de ir al hospital

Por Ginny Underwood, ministro eucarístico de los enfermos.Si las personas van al hospital para un procedimiento programado, deben pedirle a su Sacerdote la Unción de los Enfermos después de la Misa. Si no tienen notificación previa o si va a llevar a alguien al hospital, debe informar a la Oficina de Admisiones que son católicos y les gustaría que la comunión les fuera traída. Vamos todos los martes, jueves y domingos al Huntington Memorial Hospital.Si conocemos a alguien que está en el Hospital Huntington, podemos traerles la comunión. De lo contrario, solo podemos visitar a los católicos que han sido visitados por primera vez por el hospital Chaplin y que dicen que les gustaría que nos visiten.

Durante la enfermedad, cuidados de covalencia o por edad avanzada.Si desea que un ministro de eucaristía extraordinaria le traiga la comunión a los enfermos, en su casa o en un hogar de convalecencia, llame a la Oficina de atención pastoral y comuníquese con ellos. La Despedida de Padre Pablo

Queridos Amigos,

Estos últimos 12 años han sido años de bendición y alegría para mí como su Párroco. Cada sacerdote asignado a una parroquia se da cuenta de que su nueva comunidad se convertirá en su familia y él en su pastor. Al reflexionar sobre estos años, puedo atestiguar cuán ciertas son estas palabras. Ustedes, la gente de la parroquia de San Andrés, se han convertido en mi familia y ha sido un privilegio servir como su párroco.

Hemos celebrado nuestra fe juntos cuando nos reunimos para la Santa Misa cada día. Nos hemos apoyado y abrazado en momentos de pérdida, decepción, enfermedad o pruebas de la vida. Y sí, hemos experimentado la necesidad de reconciliación entre los miembros de esta familia, sólo para fortalecernos en nuestra determinación de construir una familia parroquial unificada.

Hemos creado una comunidad parroquial especial y deberían estar orgullosos. Yo estoy orgulloso. Cada domingo, los visitantes se acercan a mí después de la misa y comparten lo singular que es San Andrés. Comentan sobre la cálida bienvenida que reciben al entrar y el espíritu de amor y alegría en quienes los rodean. Ellos alaban la reverencia de nuestras Misas. Están asombrados de la diversidad de la congregación y de cómo cada persona es respetada y tratada con caridad cristiana. Éste es el don que traemos a nuestra iglesia local, la Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles. ¡Qué esto continúe!

Las palabras no pueden expresar mi gratitud por su amor, apoyo, amistad y generosidad durante estos últimos 12 años como su Párroco. Han sido años de gran alegría y siempre los atesoraré.
