Global  Health  Outreach  Trips

(Continued)

Each year 9 groups set out to different underserved areas of the world to provide healthcare over

Spring Break. This year I was privileged enough to go to the Dominican Republic with 3 other

pharmacy students, a group of medical students and doctors, and a dentist. This experience was

amazing, but even more special since I had never been on any trip like this before. We set up clinic in various areas each day and saw over 200 patients

daily. While working in the pharmacy, I was able to administer medications, change orders, and utilize

resources to optimize therapy. The environment helped foster a trusting relationship with the rest of the medical team, and we were able to learn many

things from each other. The clinic provided an opportunity to encounter many conditions and

diseases that we rarely see in our everyday practice here and counsel in Spanish. However,

the most rewarding part of the trip for me was being able to administer basic supplies- such as

toothbrushes, Tylenol, and vitamins- and how happy these simple things made the

patients! While all the trips were different in their own ways, they all were a great learning

experience and helped many people worldwide.

“Operation Diabetes collaborated with Operation Heart and the UF Diabetes Center of Excellence to participate in Diabetes Alert, which was held on March 26, 2013. We screened 88 patients, offering blood glucose tests and HbA1C tests. This event was a success and we were able to educate the Gainesville community about diabetes!”

- Operation Diabetes Chairs Jacklyn Paravicini, Jill Mendoza & Anthony Pierre

Gainesville Campus

MISSION: Pharmacists & student pharmacists work together to: - Increase overall awareness of diabetes - Educate the community on diabetes prevention & management - Demonstrate the role pharmacists play in controlling this disease - Identify individuals who are at risk for developing diabetes & those who may have diabetes but are unaware

WHAT  WE  DO:  - Conduct blood glucose screenings - Educate the public on the risk factors for diabetes, the importance of medication compliance, & tight control on blood glucose

REMEMBER:    As student pharmacists, we are the future of the healthcare system and WE have the power to improve the quality of life for diabetics.

“Operation Diabetes has had two successful Orlando events this semester. We partnered with Operation Heart to provide free blood glucose and blood pressure screenings to the community. In addition, we focused on consulting and educating our patients regarding their health and medications. We are also looking forward to planning events during the summer.”

- Marc Cruz, Operation Diabetes Officer Orlando Campus

Poison  Prevention  has  been  visiting  elementary  schools  in  the  greater  Gainesville  area  to  teach  children  about  the  dangers  associated  with  poison.  So  far,  the  Poison  Prevention  teams  have  visited  four  elementary  schools,  and  each  visit  has  been  a  great  success!  The  schools  have  been  very  receptive,  and  all

of  the  children  are  excited  to  learn  about  poison,  and  eager  to  tell  their  siblings  and  parents  about  these  events.  We  have  one  more  elementary  school  to  visit,  and  look  forward  to  presenting  to  them!

-‐  John  Leonard,  Poison  Prevention  Chair  Gainesville  Campus

This  year  marks  the  second  year  of  APhA-‐ASP’s  participation  in  the  “Gainesville  India  Fest  &  Health  Fair”,  an  event  held  annually  by  the  India  Cultural  and  Education  Center  (ICEC).  The  event  took  place  on  March  16th  at  Santa  Fe  College  Campus.  The  University  of  Florida-‐  College  of  Pharmacy  was  one  of  the  many  health-‐related  sponsors  for  the  event.  This  year,  the  Great  Gator  Health  Fest  Chairs  were  able  to  expand  our  representation  from  one  booth  (Operation  Diabetes),  to  three  national  patient  care  project  booths  (Operation  Diabetes,  Operation  Heart,  and

Operation  Immunization)  and  two  local  patient  care  project  booths  (Alcohol  and  Tobacco  Awareness,  and  Pediatric  Awareness).  As  a  whole,  the  College  of  Pharmacy  was  able  to  provide  free  screenings,  a  variety  of  information,  and  an  assortment  of  activities  for  both  adults  and  children.  In  addition  to  the  health  fair,  guests  were  able  to  "Escape

to  India"  and  purchase  cultural  food  and  garments,  listen  to  ethnic  music,  and  watch  many  entertaining  performances.  “Gainesville  India  Fest  &  Health  Fair”  was  a  huge  success  and  we  look  forward  to  participating  in

this  event  again  next  year.  -‐  Karen  Vinluan,  Great  Gator  Health  Fest  Chair,  Gainesville  Campus

UF   student   pharmacists   in   Orlando  have   been  working   hard   this   year   to  establish   Generation   Rx   on   their  campus.   Dominick   Curry,   an  Orlando  GenRx   officer,   was   enthusiastic   to  share   details   on   Generation   Rx’s  successful   kick   off,   and   goals   to  expand  this  patient  care  project:    At   the   Orlando   Campus   we   are  working   on   establishing   new  contacts,   and   spreading   the  message   Generation   Rx   has   to  offer  to  new  areas.  Our  very  first  Generation   Rx   event   was   during  our   Spring   Break.   On  March   4th,  Orlando’s   Generation   Rx  members  traveled  to  Melbourne,  Florida   to   spend  a   full   day   giving  classroom   presentations   to  students   at   Vierra   High  School.    All  of  the  volunteers  had  a   great   time   and   truly   felt   that  they   made   a   positive   impact   on  the   students.   We   are   currently  working   on   expanding   to   more  areas   around   Orlando,   including  the  UCF   area.  We  want   to  make  sure   that   we   reach   out   to   as  many  people  as  possible.

Dominick  Curry  &  Ashley  MacWhinnie

The  Generation  Rx  team  in  recently  gave  a  series  of  school  presentations  to  high  school  students  all  over  Gainesville  discussing  the  misuse  and  abuse  of  prescription  drugs.  The  presentations  were  quite  a  success,  and  the  school  board  stated  that  they  are  already  looking  forward  to  next  year’s  GenRx  visits!

Generation  Rx  is  currently  in  the  process  of  putting  together  a  brand  new  presentation  to  target  students  in  the  college  age  group.  This  will  be  a  revolutionary  way  to  approach  the  presentations  and  an  opportunity  to  reach  out  to  a  new  age  group.

Our  next  upcoming  event  is  Generation  Rx  Week  Beginning  on  Monday,  April  1st!    Be  sure  to  come  out  and  participate  in  all  the  amazing  Generation  Rx  events.  It  is  a  great  way  for  student  pharmacists  to  serve  the  community  and  gain  counseling  experience!

At  our  St.  Petersburg  campus,  Generation  Rx  is  on  a  roll!  We  have   been   tagging   along   with   screenings,   as   well   as   adventuring  out  on  our  own.  In  January,  we  were  able  to  share  our  knowledge  at   a   local   health   fair,   called   Fit   Over   Fifty.   We   also   went   to   an  elementary  school  Science  Expo  where  we  interacted  with  parents,  children,   and   school   staff.   Just   several   days   ago   we   participated  with  FSHP,  and  various  other  ASP  chairs,  at  a  Brown  Bag  event  that  FSHP   set   up   at   a   local   assisted   living   facility.   It   was   a   wonderful  experience   to   interact   with   the   residents   there   and   give  information   about   proper   drug   disposal.   Later   that   same   day,  Generation  Rx  gave  a  presentation   to  a  group  of  kids  at  a  Tampa  YMCA.  We  have  been  working  hard  since  the  beginning  of  the  year  to   start   this   relationship   with   the   YMCA   and   are   in   contact   with  another   location   in   Tampa!   We   are   hoping   it   becomes   a   long-standing   relationship  with  many  branches   for   years   to   come.  We  are  proud  to  represent  Generation  Rx  in  the  Tampa  Bay  area,  and  we  are  impressed  with  all  the  things  our  sister  campuses  are  doing  in  the  name  of  Generation  Rx!

CONGRATULATIONS Professor  Munyer    for  receiving  the

2013  APhA-‐ASP  Outstanding  Chapter  Advisor  Award!

“My  favorite  part  of  Annual,  was  when  I  was  getting  the  award,  and  out  comes  Jeremy.  I  had  no  idea!  A  student  that  I  have  worked  with  as  a  1PD…  It  made  it  so  much  more  personal.  Just  before  that,  I  asked  him  if  he  would  take

pictures  for  me,  not  knowing  they  had  already  arranged  for  him  to  present  the  award.  Also,  I  got  to  see  our  school  get  the  national  recognition  and

regional  awards.  I  love  the  fact  that  you  do  what  you  do  because  you  love  to  do  it  and  because  you  care  and  you  want  to  do  a  good  job,  not  because  of  plaques.  When  you  get  that  national  recognition  for  doing  what  you  love,  there’s  nothing  better  than  that.

Even  now  it  sends  chills  down  my  spine!”

At  the  APhA-‐ASP  Exposition  in  L.A.  over  spring  break,  our  very  own  Professor  Munyer  was  awarded  the

APhA-‐ASP  Outstanding  Chapter  Advisor  Award  of  the  year!  This  Swamp  season  ticket  holder  since  ’72  deserves  more  than  his  30-‐yard  line  seat!  As  an

advisor,  a  professor,  and  a  friend,  he  offers  himself  and  so  much  more  to  our  UF  pharmily.  He  shares,    “Not  every  health  professional  school  here  has    this  close-knit  support  for  each  other,    with  positive  patient-‐oriented  focus.

It’s  a  magical  mixture  and  we  should  savor  it.”  He  reminds  us  as  students  that  we  are  not  alone  in  this  struggle  to  succeed  in  pharmacy  school,  as  he  shares,  “We  all  have  challenges  and  it’s  not  easy.  This  program  is  very  different  than  anything  any  of  us  have  ever  experienced.  You  struggle  very  hard  and  it’s  difficult,  like  a  butterfly  trying  to  get  out  of  its  cocoon.  Rotations  are  when  you

spread  your  wings  and  fly.”  When  rotations  were  first  introduced  into  the  UF  pharmacy  program,  he  “got  a  glimpse  of  what  we,  as

pharmacists,  could  do  for  patients  and  for  physicians…  totally  eye-opening”  and  he  decided  not  to  go  into  pharmacology  research  and  to  be  a  clinician  instead!  He  appreciatively  thanks  his  own  professor,  Ron  Stuart  for  having  the  “drive  and  spirit  to  lay  down  the  foundation  for  our  college  to  begin  to  expand  in  the  clinician  practice  area”  for  the  first  time.  Witnessing  the  profession  change  so  much  over  the  years,  as  he  confesses,  “I  wish  I  were  your  age!  I  see  where  we  have  come  and  all  of  the  opportunities  that  are  happening  for  you  that  so  many  people  have  struggled  for  to  begin.  You  are  getting  recognized;  insurance  companies  are  beginning  to  pay  you  for  your  skills;  you  can  be  an  independent  practitioner  with  a  consultant  license.  We  have  dreamt  of  that  all  our  lives,  and  now  they’re  happening  for  you.”  Professor  Munyer  genuinely  wants  us  to

succeed.  “I  love  seeing  our  students  so  well-‐prepared  and  seeing  them  want  those  responsibilities.  Pharmacy  has  been  a  wonderful  career  for  me.

I  am  in  heaven.  This  is  the  best.”    Professor  Munyer  is  the  epitome  of  why  we  chose  the  greatest  profession  at  the  greatest  school.

Legislative Days &

“My  favorite  moment  of  attending  Florida  Legislative  Days  was  getting  to  participate  in  the  mock  Senate  voting  and  actually  sitting  in  the  senators'  chairs  and  voting.  I  learned  that  anyone  can  be  a  representative  (i.e.  you  could  still  work  as  a  pharmacist  part  time  and  also  be  a  member  of  the  House  Representatives).  It  was  a  life  changing  experience  that  every  pharmacy  student  should  participate  in  at  least  once.”

This March, 130 UF Student Pharmacists traveled to Tallahassee, Florida to PROTECT, PROMOTE,

CELEBRATE, & ADVOCATE for the Pharmacy Profession "Legislative  Days  was  a

unique  experience,  giving  us  the  opportunity  to  look  at

politics  from  a  new  perspective.    Participating  in  this  event  made  me  realize  that  advocating  for  pharmacy  is  absolutely  essential  to  our  future  profession,  and  that  we  as  student  pharmacists  have  the  power  to  influence  major  changes  in  healthcare."

My   favorite   memory   was   when   State   Representative   Matt  Hudson   took   the   time   to   address   the   pharmacy   students.     It  was   an   actual   Congress   member   who   was   saying   that   he  wanted  to  hear  from  us  because  he  depends  on  the  counsel  of  trained  professionals.  I  think  it's  easy  to  question  how  much  we  as  student  pharmacists  can  contribute  to  the  whole   legislative  process,   but   Representative   Hudson   reminded   us   that   many  legislators   don't   have   medical   backgrounds.     Even   just   a   few  years  of  pharmacy  education  can  provide  them  with  significant  insight   into   the   training,   expertise   and   value   of   our  profession.     For  me,   that   gesture   really   helped   to   shorten   the  distance  between  pharmacy  and  politics.    I  went  from  thinking,  'Well,   what   do   I   know'   to   'Well,   this   is   what   they   need   to  know'.    As  student  pharmacists,  we  can  bridge  the  gap  between  education  and  legislation.

-‐  Whitney  Ruddock,  Gainesville  Campus

While  waiting  to  meet  with  Senator  Margolis,  Lori  Mor

enthusiastically  greeted  Florida’s    Israeli  Consul  General,  Chaim

Shacham,    and  enjoyed  conversing  with  him  in  Hebrew.    The  consulate  seemed  just  as  delighted  to  meet  Lori.    He  was  able  to  take  a  break  from  communicating  through  his  translator  and  was  pleased  to  meet  such  an  enthusiastic

student.

It  is  extremely  important  as  student  pharmacists  to  get  involved  in  legislature  to  help  protect  and  progress  our  profession.  It  is  up  to  us  as  students  to  make  our  future  strong  through  advocacy  and  policy  and  there's  no  better  way  than  going  to  Tallahassee  to  let  our  voices  be  heard  by  those  in  charge.
