The March on WashingtonOn August 28, 1963, an estimated 250,000 people converged on Washing-ton, dC, to take part in the march on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. it was a pivotal moment in the civil rights movement: a huge and peaceful demonstration for racial and economic equality. Capped by the rev. martin Luther King, Jr.’s “i Have a dream” speech, the march helped usher in sweep-ing civil rights legislation and a sea change in public opinion.
WGBH is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the march with a series of programs and resources on television, radio and the Web. Look for coverage throughout August, culminating in 24 hours of special programming starting
tuesday evening, August 27, with the premiere of The March, a riveting new television documentary that takes a fresh look not only at the unfolding events and key individuals involved in this
historic moment, but also the behind-the-scenes conflict between those supporting and opposing it (page 18, with related programming on the World channel, page 22).
Our radio services pick up the baton Wednesday, August 28, when 89.7 WGBH Boston Public radio shares the stories behind the story (page 26), including a fascinating bit of WGBH history: eight years before nPr hit the airwaves, WGBH was one of a small group of public radio stations there to broadcast the march. Back in our Boston studios, the quarter-inch tape was rolling, recording speeches delivered by dr. King and John Lewis of the student nonviolent Coordinating Committee (snCC), music performed by a very young Bob dylan and Joan Baez, and much more—15 hours in all. in 2011, with grant funding, WGBH was able to digitize those fragile tapes (the only ones in existence!). those recordings are part of WGBH’s extensive media archives, and just one of many treasures we are excited to preserve and share (wgbh.org/march), with more to come.
Our celebration of the 50th anniversary of the march ends on an uplifting, lyrical note with 99.5 WCrB Classical new england’s A Beautiful Symphony of Brotherhood, a live broadcast of the Boston Landmark Orchestra’s August 28 outdoor concert at the Hatch shell on Boston’s esplanade, featuring evocative music, stirring words and special guests (page 27).
Capturing powerful and important moments, off ering diverse perspec-tives and inspiration…it all happens thanks to your generous ongoing support of WGBH.

Rehabilitating Juvenile JusticeAmerica’s reliance on juvenile incarceration is the highest in the world among developed nations, and that has serious implica-tions for the future of our nation’s at-risk youth and our finances. it costs approximately $88,000 per
year to send a kid to juvenile incarceration and nearly 70 percent of them are re-arrested after release. is there an alternative to this broken system of kids cycling in and out of the juvenile justice system? A group of reformers applies the restorative justice principles of the maori people of new Zealand to the mean streets of Baltimore. Can the wisdom of the maori help fix juvie justice? Israel RevealedP.O.V. travels to israel in two new programs. in The Law in These Parts, acclaimed israeli filmmaker ra’anan Alexandrowicz examines the sys-tem of military administration used by israel since the six day War of 1967. through candid interviews with israeli judges, prosecutors and legal advisers who helped devise the occupation’s legal framework, the film paints a complex picture of the middle east conflict and the delicate balance between political and security interests and human rights. in 5 Broken Cameras, Palestinian farmer and filmmaker emad
Burnat follows one West Bank family’s evolution over five years. the result is a deeply personal, firsthand account of life and non-violent resistance in Bil’in, a West Bank village where israel is build-ing a security fence. P.O.V./The Law in These PartsMon, 8/19 at 10pm on WGBH 2

Defining Momentsit was one of history’s defi ning moments: the 1963 march on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Unprecedented in size, the peaceful gathering issued a clarion call for racial justice that forever changed a nation. Gatherers marched down the national mall to the Lincoln memorial. Prominent civil rights and religious leaders spoke to an audience eager for change. dr. martin Luther King, Jr.’s stirring “i Have a dream” speech became a rallying call for equality. in celebration
of the 50th anniversary of this event, this month WGBH brings you The March, a new documentary co-produced by robert redford’s sundance Productions that reveals the dramatic story behind the event through the remembrances of key players, historians, journalists, authors and citizens who peacefully demanded an end to discrimination and injustice. The MarchTue, 8/27 at 9pm on WGBH 2

Health and Survivalthe opportunities to improve the health and lifespan of people around the globe have never been greater. Yet millions of people, mostly children, still die each year from treatable and preventable diseases. the vast majority of these deaths occur in the developing world. But with funding increases, new vaccines and greater access to health, the picture is changing. this four-part series travels to villages in the Philippines, Uganda, niger and Bangladesh, where people suffer from diseases and conditions the rest of the world has long since conquered. From pregnancy to birth, through the formative years of a child’s development to adulthood, we see the pain of loss and witness the triumph of hope.Survival: Lives in the BalanceThe Struggle to Breathe (Philippines)Tue, 8/6 at 7pm

Justice for AlbinosUkerewe island, three hours from mainland tanzania, is home to a large community of people who live with albinism. While many albinos here are killed at birth or rejected by their families, those who survive risk being murdered for their body parts because of a superstitious belief that they possess medicinal properties. In the Shadow of the Sun tells the story of two members of this community: vedastus, a teenage boy who struggles to find his own place in the world, and Josephat, a strong-willed advocate for people with albinism. Reporting on the Dreamthis month on WGBH 2, the documentary The March (see page 18) features remembrances of key players involved in 1963’s march on Washington, including civil rights activists Julian Bond and Andrew Young, and testimoni-als from Oprah Winfrey, Harry Belafonte and others.
89.7 WGBH Boston Public radio will bring listeners local perspectives of this historic gather-ing. “the march helped transform this country,” says Phil Redo, general manager for WGBH radio. “We’re going to put it into context by looking at what it meant and still means, and by explaining its enduring affect on our region and country.”
Leading up to the 50th anniversary on August 28, listen for commentary from award-winning journalist Callie Crossley, host of Under the Radar on 89.7 and a regular panelist on WGBH tv’s Beat the Press and Basic Black, who will share her thoughts on dr. martin Luther King, Jr.’s “i Have a dream” speech. On Aug. 28, 89.7 will dedicate a day of coverage to the march, with reports from Phillip martin on Morning Edition and All Things Considered and midday Boston Public Radio hosts Jim Braude and margery eagan leading a local conversation about the legacy of the march and King’s speech.
then at 2pm, history will come alive when 89.7 dips into WGBH’s archives to present excerpts from WGBH radio’s 15 hours of on-the-scene coverage from 1963.
“As a news organization, we’re so fortunate to have access to WGBH’s archives,” redo says. “the material we uncover rounds out our reporting and adds another dimension to the stories we tell, deepening listeners’ under-standing of significant moments from our past and present.”

Symphony of BrotherhoodBy Benjamin K. roemanaging director of Classical services
With this faith we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day. ~dr. martin Luther King, Jr., “i Have a dream,” Aug. 28, 1963
Fifty years ago, as a member of the fledgling educational radio network (a forerunner of today’s nPr), WGBH radio was one of just a handful of stations to cover the march on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. it was an unprece-dented gathering of demonstrators, an event that concluded with the epic “i Have a dream” speech, delivered on the national mall by dr. King. Fifty years later, and closer to home, our microphones will be back out in force in a major public gathering, this time to bring you a musical tribute to the inspiration and ideals that lie at the heart of dr. King’s dream. Join us Wednesday, August 28, at 7pm for a live broadcast of the Boston Landmark Orchestra’s free concert at the Hatch shell on the Charles river esplanade marking this milestone in history. Christopher Wilkins will lead the Boston Landmarks Orchestra, One-City Choir, the new england spiritual ensemble, and special guests in a concert of stirring words and inspirational music by Aaron Copland, duke ellington, michael tippett and Lee Hoiby. the night also will feature the broadcast premiere of Cry, the Beloved Country, Kurt Weill’s moving musical adaptation of Alan Paton’s groundbreaking novel about life in south Africa under apartheid. All in tribute to the man who once declared, “We must see that peace represents a sweeter music, a cosmic melody that is far superior to the discords of war.”A Beautiful Symphony of BrotherhoodWed, 8/28 at 7pm
A Tanglewood Day Like No Otherit’s a day like no other at tanglewood, filled with fanfare, family activities, food…and lots and lots of music: symphonic, chamber, piano and vocal performances by literally hundreds of musicians, from the teenagers at the Boston University tanglewood institute and the budding professionals of the tanglewood music Center Orchestra to the seasoned veterans of the Boston symphony Orchestra. it’s Tanglewood on Parade, one of the festival’s most beloved traditions, capped off by an evening concert and fireworks that features all of tanglewood’s orchestras performing in a single extended concert! this year, Tanglewood on Parade also will be a celebration on the air, as 99.5 WCrB will be on the tanglewood grounds throughout the day, start-ing with morning host Laura Carlo, continuing with Alan mcLellan, and onto Cathy Fuller’s afternoon drive-time program. the entire day will be filled with features, conversations, and, of course, music, in an effort to convey the community open house feel that makes Tanglewood on Parade such a unique event on the summertime calendar. And in the evening, ron della Chiesa will be back in the broadcast booth at the Koussevitzky music shed to bring you every note as conduc-tors stéphane denève, Keith Lockhart, Charles dutoit and John Williams together lead the Boston symphony, the Boston Pops, and the tanglewood music Center Orchestra in the annual Tanglewood on Parade gala concert. We can’t tell you how it will begin—the program is always full of unex-pected surprises—but we can promise how it will end: with tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture and an explosion of fireworks over the Berkshires. Joins us all day on tuesday, August 6, for Tanglewood on Parade—a great tanglewood tradition that you can now take with you!Tanglewood on ParadeTue, 8/6 beginning at 5am

Last summer, at a live event presented by The Moth Radio Hour, mystery writer and native martha’s vineyarder Cynthia riggs amazed the audience gathered in the vineyard’s Union Chapel. Cynthia, 81, shared the romantic story of how she reconnected with a man she worked with more than a half century ago. We’re grateful that we’ll be hearing more great stories like Cynthia’s this summer when the Peabody Award-winning program returns for Fish Out of Water: The Moth on Martha’s Vineyard, saturday, August 3, at the tabernacle in Oak Bluffs. (Go to themoth.org for ticket information.) The Moth is dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling, and has two primary goals: to present the finest storytellers among established and emerging writers, performers and artists; and to encourage storytelling among populations whose stories often go unheard. “The Moth’s inaugural show on the vineyard (last year) was so warmly received that we couldn’t wait to return,” says sarah Haberman, The Moth’s executive director. “it’s a privilege to be invited back to such a dynamic and vibrant community and we hope to make it an annual tradition.” The New Yorker writer Adam Gopnik will host the vineyard event, and the evening’s roster of storytellers includes writer and performer Jenny Allen;

former speechwriter for President Clinton mark Katz; and Buddy vanderhoop, a native American of the Wampanoag tribe of Aquinnah who is widely known on martha’s vineyard for his ability to catch really big fish. “We’re excited to have The Moth at the tabernacle,” says Jay Allison, founder of WCAi and executive director of Atlantic Public media, producer of The Moth. “it’ll be a privilege to hear the stories on an August evening in that beautiful setting, and then share them with the rest of the country on the radio show.” if you can’t make the event, listen to The Moth saturdays at 1pm on WCAi to hear the recorded stories. And if you're curious about how Cynthia’s story unfolded, go to themoth.org (just type her name in the site’s search bar), or find it in our archives on The Point at capeandislands.org. Cynthia, a 13th-generation vineyarder, joined me on the show to talk about her life and tell the tale of how love can blossom at any age.
