Casper College offers a wide range of performance activities. Casper College student jazz ensembles include: Jazz

Ensemble, Jazz Combo, and Contemporary Singers also known as Triple C. Participation scholarships are available to music majors and nonmajors alike.

Jazz studies at Casper College encompass a wide variety of music and experiences. Students study and perform standards, new arrangements, original compositions, new commissions, free jazz, and fusion.

In addition to performance opportunities, students are encouraged to enroll in “Jazz Improvisation,” and “History of Blues, Jazz, and Rock” as they are offered. These courses provide the groundwork for a lifetime of jazz enjoyment and are designed to encourage freethinking, spontaneous music making, and historical understanding of the only original American art form.Triple C, the CC Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo have enjoyed numerous performing opportunities at Casper

College, in the community, and around the world. Triple C has toured throughout the state of Wyoming and the Northwest. The CC Jazz Ensemble has performed at the All-Northwest Conference, and both the CC Jazz Ensemble and combos perform frequently at the Greeley Jazz Festival in Greeley, Colorado.

The CC Jazz Ensemble and combos routinely work and perform with clinicians and guest artists throughout the academic year and during the Kinser Jazz Festival. Past artists include: Dizzy Gillespie, Ellis Marsalis Jr., the Count Basie Orchestra, Betty Carter, Bob Mintzer, the Yellowjackets, Art Pepper, Bobby Shew, Rufus Reid, Clark Terry, Arturo Sandoval, Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band, and Vertical Voices. This year, please join us on Monday, Feb. 4 at noon, in the Wheeler Concert Hall when the CC Jazz Ensemble and the CC Contemporary singers will perform a brief set.

Jazz at Casper CollegeWelcome to the 52nd Annual

Kinser Jazz Festival!I

am delighted to welcome you to the Casper College Kinser Jazz Festival. The Casper College music department takes great pride in the Kinser Jazz Festival, a cornerstone

of our departmental mission, which includes “enriching the cultural life of our community.”

The festival has grown remarkably since its inception 52 years ago, hosting over 1000 students and music educators from across Wyoming and the surrounding region. Three days of performances and clinics are at the educational heart of the festival. High school and middle school jazz ensembles have the opportunity to be adjudicated by some of the finest jazz educators in the region. Students and teachers gain valuable insight into their performances due to the nature of the critiques and clinics that are part of their festival experience. Participants are also able to attend each other’s performances as well as Casper College jazz ensembles performances and of course, our headliner concert featuring The Manhattan Transfer.

If time allows, please come up to the music building and listen to the excellent student performances which are taking place in our beautiful Wheeler Concert Hall. Students at Casper College enjoy small class sizes as well as significant and meaningful interaction with faculty members. Prospective students are welcome to apply and audition for a music activities scholarship. We award scholarships to students who wish to pursue a music major as well as those students who are interested in being involved in music while pursuing other academic interests. In addition, the Casper College Foundation offers a variety of specific scholarships for music majors. These scholarships, along with our activity scholarships, can greatly ease the financial burden of attending college. If you, or a talented

student you know, is interested in auditioning for a scholarship, or requesting additional information about the Casper College music program, send an email to: [email protected].

I sincerely hope that you enjoy this evening’s performances. The All-State Jazz Choir includes some our most talented students from across our great state. Congratulations to the students and their teachers for being selected for this honor ensemble.

Thank you for attending and supporting the 2019 Kinser Jazz Festival. I look forward to seeing you at other departmental events, including our annual Music of the Masters concert on Sunday, May 5, 2019.

Warmly, Jennifer Cowell-DePaolo Music Program Director

Wheeler Concert Hall, Music Building, Casper College campus

The Casper College Kinser Jazz Festival, now in its 52nd year, is named for the late Dr. Thomas Kinser, who founded

the festival and promoted jazz as a standard component of music study in Wyoming. In 1967, the festival hosted three ensembles. Today, the festival has grown to accommodate nearly 50 ensembles, including college, high school, and junior high school instrumental and vocal ensembles.

Our mission statement is: “The Casper College Kinser Jazz Festival exists to provide world-class jazz and jazz education to the current and future generations of musicians in the Rocky Mountain region. Our focus is to present authentic jazz performances by artists of the highest caliber and to offer a variety of educational experiences for jazz ensembles, their directors, and the public at large.” The clinicians provide written comments, a rating, and a custom work session for each ensemble to help improve future performances. Regularly scheduled seminars, workshops, and performances are offered to expose festival attendees to high quality jazz performance and education.

The highlight of the festival this year is the evening concert featuring The Manhattan Transfer. In past years, jazz greats Dizzy Gillespie, Betty Carter, the Count Basie Orchestra, Airto Moreira, Flora Purim, Ellis Marsalis, Clark Terry, Kurt Elling, Russell Malone, Arturo Sandoval, Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band, and others have performed and worked with students from Casper College and throughout Wyoming, Colorado, Montana, and Nebraska.

Due largely to Kinser’s passion, Casper College has a strong tradition of excellence in the area of jazz. The program provides students with an excellent beginning and continuation

to their jazz careers. Because Casper College is a two-year college, students are provided opportunities and leadership roles typically only available to upperclassmen and graduate students.

Our small class size means that our freshmen and sophomores may audition and receive lead positions in instrumental and vocal ensembles including: the Casper College Jazz Ensemble, Contemporary Singers, Jazz Combo, Collegiate Chorale, and Concert Band. An additional benefit to our smaller class size is that students may receive individualized instruction in most courses including theory seminars, jazz improvisation, music history special topics, and individual applied instruction. The jazz program at Casper College has provided a solid start for generations of musicians. To date, we can confirm three generations of Wyoming instructors who have brought their students to our festival to perform and we are rapidly anticipating the fourth generation. While on campus for the festival, students who are interested in attending Casper College may arrange to audition for scholarships by speaking with any of our faculty and performing a short, private audition.

Paul’s co-write “Swing Balboa (Down on Riverside)” mixes the classic Balboa swing sound (which originated in Los Angeles in the 1920s) with edgy, modern electro-swing. Paul’s lyrics also re-fashion a 50’s Martin Denny recording called “Paradise Found” into the hopeful and calming, tropical flavored, “The Paradise Within.” Bentyne penned sly lyrics to saxophonist Grace Kelly’s moody, film noir-ish “Blues for Harry Bosch” which reference numerous classic detective movies. Siegel co-wrote and sings lead on the hip, uptempo “Shake Your Boogie (Galactic Vocal Version),” whose story cleverly incorporates a playful element of “Star Wars.”

Defying easy genre categorizations, The Manhattan Transfer became the first act to win Grammy Awards in the pop and jazz categories in one year (1981) for “Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal” for “Boy From New York City” and “Best Jazz Performance Duo or Group” for “Until I Met You (Corner Pocket).” In 1985, their album “Vocalese” made history as the single greatest Grammy nominated album in history in one year with 12 nominations. Vocalese earned two Grammys: “Best Jazz Vocal Performance, Duo or Group;” and “Best Vocal Arrangement for Two or More Voices” for “Another Night in Tunisia” (won by Bentyne and Bobby McFerrin). This album, which featured jazz legends Dizzy Gillespie, Ron Carter, and the Count Basie Orchestra, changed the perception of The Manhattan Transfer from superstar pop artists to formidable jazz singers.

For Siegel, performing “Birdland” in 1979 at The Grammy Awards was one of her personal highlights, along with singing twice at The White House, and performing at President

Bill Clinton’s inauguration in 1993 with Little Jimmy Scott. She says the group was blessed to know giants of the music business. “Working with Ahmet Ertegun, Arif Mardin, and artists who are no longer here like Laura Nyro,” she reflects. “We caught the tail end of an era.” The Manhattan Transfer has also sung with musical greats Tony Bennett, Smokey Robinson, Bette Midler, Phil Collins, B.B. King, Chaka Khan, James Taylor, and Frankie Valli of The Four Seasons.

“As our work on “The Junction,” and the theme of the album reflects – democracy is the fabric of the group, and has been from the beginning,” says Bentyne, who took leave of the group several times while undergoing treatment for Hodgkins’ lymphoma in the early 2010s, but has since made a complete recovery. “We all have a different take on music and appreciate different styles, so each member brings something to the table that is unique. We have tremendous faith in that process. This album is completely us, a true snapshot of who we are right now, having survived so many hardships, but looking forward to exciting new chapters in the band’s story. We all give great credit to our producer Mervyn Warren, without whom this project would not have come together as beautifully as it did. His participation, oversight, brilliant arrangements, and production helped us make one of the strongest musical statements ever.”

Beginning with their first performances in the early 1970s, The Manhattan Transfer have become the cornerstones of contemporary music. Originally launched by Tim Hauser in 1969, Hauser, Alan Paul, Janis Siegel, and Laurel Masse were the group by 1972. Cheryl Bentyne joined the group in 1979 after Masse left. Known for their amazing harmony and versatility, incorporating pop, jazz, R&B, rock and roll, swing, symphonic, and a cappella music, the group was signed by the legendary Ahmet Ertegun to Atlantic Records. The group made their recording debut with their self-titled album in 1975. Known primarily as an East Coast cult act, they expanded their following by starring in their own 1975 CBS-TV variety series as a summer replacement for the “Cher Bono Show.” Starting as an underground group in New York City, The Manhattan Transfer garnered international popularity when “Chanson D’Amour” from the 1976 “Coming Out” album became a number one hit in Europe.

One of the co-writers on “The Junction” – the group’s new album which draws inspiration in part from The Transfer’s classic 1975 version of Glenn Miller’s “Tuxedo Junction” – is the group’s new member, bass vocalist Trist Curless. Curless began subbing on the road for the late band founder Tim Hauser in 2013, officially joining after Hauser’s passing in late 2014.

Welcoming Curless – a founding member of famed Los Angeles a cappella group m-pact – to the fold, Siegel (alto), Paul (tenor) and Bentyne (soprano) embrace a new dynamic and fresh possibilities for their legendary sound that artfully incorporates his low range into their established blend. “The Junction,”

dedicated to the memory of Hauser, was produced by another master vocalist, five-time Grammy winner Mervyn Warren, a renowned film composer, arranger, and producer. Warren, one of the founders of gospel/R&B a cappella legends Take 6, in addition to his intricate vocal arrangements, wrote the album’s first single, the soulful ballad “Sometimes I Do.”

“It’s a whole different ball game, but one we feel is still musically very viable and exciting,” Siegel says. Paul adds, “The concept of ‘The Junction’ is that this is a special meeting place, a junction of merging our four and a half decade musical legacy with something new. It wasn’t exactly a seamless transition because Tim is irreplaceable, and he and Trist are very different singers. We weren’t looking to replace Tim’s unique personality, but found in Trist someone who could add a new element to the group, and take care of the bottom of the quartet with his true bass.” Curless reflects, “My personal desire was that the album would sound like The Manhattan Transfer, keeping what they’ve done, but bringing a new energy that would come naturally with my strengths as an artist, becoming a part of theirs.”

While well-renowned for their spectacular re-imaginings of classics like “Java Jive,” “Birdland,” “The Boy From New York City,” “Twilight Zone,” “A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square,” and “Route 66,” one of their most acclaimed albums was 1991’s “The Offbeat of Avenues,” which featured numerous group originals amidst the cover songs. In many ways, “The Junction” harkens back to that approach, with members of the group writing or co-writing five songs.
