1. Applying Goodwins Theory By Natasha 2. 1. The mood of the video The main moods that we created in the video are mainly; melancholy and a dark mood. We displayed these moods through the visuals and lyrics of the song. We wanted the lyrics to fully represent the characters story and make what is seen on camera match the words said. Certain lyrics such as, And you think your happiness is real and Howd you teach, teach yourself how to smile, and these demonstrate the dark feelings of the character. We also represented this through the visuals. For example at the beginning of the song we use a slow pace at the beginning with slow movements and a slow cutting rate as this is her past where she is a stripper and is at her worst so the rate signifies her lost of motivation for life. We show her face to be quite dead and lifeless at this point and this helps set the mood of the video. Her actions at this point is dull and it tells the viewers that she is struggling to escape her stripper life. This was partly inspired by The Weeknd Wicked Games case study where the movements and mood at the beginning of that music video was quite slow and dark. When it gets to the photo-shoot scene when it represents her life getting better, we still show her to be quite sad and joyless and this goes in parallel with the lyrics as they say nothing really played out how its supposed to. We also wanted to create a sensual mood through the visuals of the shadow dancing. These movements were quite raunchy and it was also in black and white which implies the more sexual and provocative side of the music video. Lyrics of the song also portray that, for example, I love the way you make that body bend, for me again. 3. 2.The narrative structure We have a non-linear structure as it is a mixed time sequence where it starts as the character as a stripper, then goes to them as a model and then back to her life on the streets. Mixing the time sequence helps us to be more abstract as we dont want everything to be completely clear to the audience. It keeps it conceptual and different. A flashback is used at the end of the video and this is used to remind the viewers of the story so they understand the narrative. 4. 3. Realism vs Fantasy I think that our music is quite realistic and this is because the storyline that we created is like a representative to real life. Furthermore we shot many scenes in natural settings, such as Shoreditch or the salon and these brought the narrative to life by showing it in the realistic setting. On the other hand it could be argued that our music video has some degree of fantasy which is shown through the balloon scenes as thats not relatable to real life and is quite a fictional setting. These was to separate from the dark theme and create a more playful, artistic theme. 5. 4. The standard of themes evident We had a few running themes in our music video. One of our main themes is the bad tv. This is an effect we used in many of the shots of our music video. This gave the video a rough and edgy look and is like a reflection the characters life. It also distorts the image and adds the mystery and helps to make it abstract. Another theme is the balloons which is a typical theme in The Weeknds videos, especially from his Trilogy album which was one of the case studies used. We wanted to include the balloons as it makes it more artistic and different. It also brought more life to the video as the scene where the balloons are in is more racy. Bad TV effect 6. 5. The role of performance The music video is not performance based as that is a typical convention of a rock genre music video where the artist performs to the camera but as the music is more RnB, we wanted to focus on the narrative rather than performance. Also The Weeknd would typically use less camera time on him, and this was shown in the Wicked Games case study and to represent the artist himself we wanted to be similar to what he would do for the video but also make it our own. 6. Different modes of sexuality6. Different modes of sexuality The female could be seen as a whore figure because her characters role and how she is sexualised through the clothes, lyrics and dancing. For example, she has quite provocative clothing, like in the beginning where her role is a stripper she wears lace and platform heels which can be seen as quite racy. All the shadow dancing is slow and sensual so this creates and idea of her sexuality. Furthermore in the final part of the music video where we see the shadow take off an item of clothing represents her lifestyle and sexuality. 7. 5.
