w E l c o M EThe Full Circle is a true symbol of this past year, symbolizing movement and connection with oneself, and others. 2013 marks the
5th anniversary of Malene Grotrian Design, and milestones have a tendency to create reflection…. .
This year has been a creative journey of reconnection to my Danish culture, passion for art and painting, and bringing forth a
piece of the past to the present. You can read more about the similarities between the creation process of painting and designing
clothing within The Magazine.
The foundational and philanthropic business approach of Malene Grotrian Design originated from what at the time seemed
an arbitrary charity involvement with a fundraiser for Ovarian Cancer Canada. The relationship to and purpose of HOW to
do business by getting involved, originated more than 3 years ago as a result of the event. Our campaign model, Olympic Gold
Medal winner Ashleigh McIvor, modeled in the Ovarian Cancer Canada fashion event and coming full circle, Ashleigh is now the
face of our campaign, along with local actress Mannu Sandhu.
The philanthropic foundation that was established years ago has generated significant $ donations during the past 5 years for a
variety of charities. I am proud of the values of our team and the local businesses we have partnered with, in order to give back
and create unique experience packages. Being nominated and considered for 2 awards this year for our philanthropic approach,
continues to motivate me to inspire through fashion and art, and gives purpose to my life.
Enjoy the sharing of creation!

“Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards.” By the Danish
Philosopher Soren Kirkegaard.
We must dare to take action, live life, and move forward. When we look into the rear mirrors
of our lives, we will learn and understand the connection to why. The past and the present is
connected, and is a continuation of one another.
To me, the “Full Circle” theme symbolizes the connection from past to present; the continuation
of life and events. When we continue down our individual paths, we will again return to the
place where we began… allowing us to understand that each event and person on the road is a
pearl attached to the string which creates the embellished necklace of life. Some pearls will be
smaller, and others larger.
When I look into my rear mirror, I see the full circle of events that have shaped the present day
in many ways. In April of 2013, I travelled to Denmark to visit my family for what truly became
a journey of reuniting with my culture, my heritage, and my art.
Before fashion design, my personal artistic journey started with sculpting and fine arts. I have
embraced the molding of clay since childhood. I later picked up painting and drawing and
was, for a time, experimenting in portraits using coal, acrylics and pencil. Painting and drawing
portraits taught me about the application of self in the creation process and how difficult it can
be to create the portrait of someone you know, as opposed to someone you don’t know. When
we think we know who and what we see, we apply our consciousness and logical thinking and
the portrait becomes still . But, when we do not know the individual or object, there is less self-
involvement in the process, and the creation becomes free with complete expression and
full energy.
I always paint when I am in Denmark, it has become my ritual. It is a passion and love for the
arts I have continued to embrace. This has resulted in my parents’ home becoming a gallery
of sorts, as it houses an exhibition of the art that I have produced over the years. Some are
abstracts, others figurative, and there are many portraits. I have recently combined my fashion
illustrations with painting, in an abstract approach.
It was my recent trip to Denmark which inspired me to bring my passion for art and painting
home to Vancouver. For me, this feels almost as if I have brought forth a piece of my past into
to the present.
I approach painting as a process, not a performance. When beginning to paint, I like to place 2
to 3 canvases in front of me. This process eliminates the fear of the one white canvas, allowing
me to get into the flow of creation. The application of “clay” (in various forms) shapes and
molds the foundation of the painting and activates a high energy in the making. When applying
this material, it is at first liquid, but hardens in minutes. This forces the process to go from
awareness to subconscious creation, and removes the intent from performance to process. I
often begin the process of a fashion painting with the same method I use to start the design
process of my clothing collection. I first sketch the silhouette of a woman’s body, and then build
layers of paint on top of the sketch, much the same way I build the clothing on top of the female
figures in my sketches.
My path began with the appreciation of creation in art….this opened the door to a career in
fashion, which has now evolved to a broadened creative expression. And so, I have come “Full
Circle” to where it all began. I am humbled to share my beginning with you.
“ Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards.”

As in most aspects of life, the greatest results are attained by collaboration.
Supporting and working with professionals, business organizations, and charities
has created some unique projects and relationships over the past 5 years.
Yes, 2013 is the 5th anniversary of Malene Grotrian Design and “transformation”
and “collaboration” are two words which describe the development of the brand
perfectly. We’ve grown from a home-based wholesale business in 2008, to a
philanthropic corporation with a retail location. We now design two annual ready-
to-wear collections for our exclusive Clientele, in addition to offering a one-of-a-
kind custom design experience.
Malene Grotrian Design has developed from a childhood dream into a socially
impactful brand as a result of great team effort and community-mindedness.
“We can do it!” is the motto. A magical thing happens when you have a team that
believes in your vision: they carry it forward, even if you lose sight of it at times.
This is the greatest gift I have ever received. I am thankful to each individual who
has helped form the path of Malene Grotrian Design, and continues to move it
forward.
As a local designer and manufacturer, our goal is to inspire individuals and
companies to collaborate and get involved. By combining fashion with the arts,
music, television and the support of organizations and individuals who share our
philanthropic values, we’ve seen great things happen. When we collaborate and
find ways to create unique and original experiences, people come together in the
excitement of creation, and our entire community benefits.

Versatility is allowing for personal expression. I LOVE that I am able to reverse a dress, move
the shoulders, I love that I can essentially “mold” it into the look I want. This has become a
default way of thinking for me when I design a new piece of clothing. I ask myself, “How can
this be styled in multiple ways when I wear it? Can I wear it as a day and evening piece?”
To create an exceptionally versatile design, I believe simplicity is the key. In this process,
I think more in shapes, and less in structure. An oval or square, or whatever it may be,
essentially has ALL possible shapes when folded, gathered, twisted or affected in any way. I
can allow for a shape to be any of these, and it creates a versatile design. Our Windcatcher
has been our MOST versatile design to date, a best seller. Windcatchers are one size with
multiple styling options from scarf, to one sleeved blouse, to tunic, to floor length halter
dress. It has so many styling options, and it can be folded to fit in a pocket!
Versatility is co-creation when my client is able to experiment with a garment I’ve designed,
and come up with a styling option that I never dreamed of! For me, this defines a great
versatile design. Versatility also lies in the look of a design – if a dress can do double duty as
a professional look, and then transform to cocktail dress, it will be far more versatile than
the “cocktail” dress you would never wear to the office. Styling, in combination with our
accessories, becomes the key to dressing it up or down, enabling you to move easily from
the boardroom, to business cocktail, to the ballroom.

Fashion + Tech = is the intersection of design and scientific innovation where these two industries crossover to redefine the way we experience the fashion industry.
The 19th century was the turning point for the fashion industry. The first adoption of technology in the industry was the debut of the sewing machine, which transformed the way clothing was produced and manufactured. Hand-crafted gave way to mass production, which triggered the decline of MTM (Made-to-Measure) as such processes were inefficient and the era of
RTW (Ready-to-Wear) emerged. RTW introduced standardized sizing, fixed prices and retail distribution. What was once produced in a boutique or high-end couture studio was now being produced in colossal factories. These products are then shipped en masse and displayed in large retail stores to be rifled through by consumers. Where did the luxury go?
Malene Grotrian has brought MTM back “full circle” in an efficient and luxurious way through the adoption of technology that allows consumers to express their individuality and creativity. The acceptance for technological innovation within the industry has grown exponentially. This has provided fashion industry leaders the ability to connect with their consumers globally and provide them with a deeper inside look into their brand and legacy.
E-retailing, fitting solutions, social networking, digital marketing, wearable technologies, 3D printing, measurement and product recommendation tools, trendspotting analytics and holographic fashion shows are some of the latest technologies shaping the future trend of fashion + tech.
There has been significant innovation and development revitalizing the fashion industry, however this is a mere glimpse of what is possible when fashion embraces the technologies of tomorrow. Wait to see how The Modern Mirror will push the boundaries of fashion + tech by collaborating with designers like Malene in bringing luxury back to the fashion industry where it once was.

H o w T o s H o p“ I H AT E T o s H o p ” We hear this all the time. Shopping for clothes can be time consuming and, for many women, a frustrating
experience. When we can’t find the right fit, we often assume there is something wrong with us. We are here
to tell you that’s not true.
Women are intricate in many ways and our body is no exception. When it comes to shopping for clothing, the
unique composition of your body can change how a garment will fit you. You might share exact measurements
with your friend but, the clothes fit you differently. Why? You may have a wider chest, while your friend may
have a broad back and smaller chest. Maybe you have wide hips and a low-profile bum, as opposed to narrow
hips and a full bum. Having a sway back or a flat back, all of these factors will change the fit of the clothes...
especially the dreaded pant! No matter what the case, your body is perfect the way it is.
Did you know that there are no standard sizes? Each season, brands choose a fit model and set their own
standard from a single set of measurements, and then scale it up or down. Not only are sizes different from
brand to brand and store to store, they may also change from season to season within the same brand!
All of this is to assure you... it’s not YOU. You don’t hate shopping; you hate feeling like there’s something
wrong with you. You are perfect. We love your body and we want you to love your body too. At Malene
Grotrian we will alter your garments on your body, to ensure you look and feel great.

M A d E T o M E A s u r ECreating a custom or made to measure garment is the ultimate personal expression of WHO you are! When the custom garment
process is complete, I love it when my client tells me, “WE did well!” This is exactly how the experience should feel – like a
collaboration between the designer and YOU.
While having a custom design made, you will witness the creation process first hand. It will be a visual experience that begins with
a sketch of the design, followed by trying on the garment in a sample fabric called a “Muslin” The Muslin will help us to determine
the proportion and design details. It is when you have the muslin on your body that the real sculpting and exploration takes place.
The process of trying on the sample muslin design is a fun step for both myself and my clients, because this is where the concept of a
design materializes and is tested in reality. I draw on the muslin, mold it, trim it, shape it and fit it, all to perfect the design details.
I love designing gala dresses and evening wear, because of the luxury materials and extravagance in details and expression. There is
room for creative expression and “drama”! It’s an opportunity for me to turn a woman (my client) into an art-piece. As an artist, the
woman becomes my canvas, and she shapes the foundation of the dress. A dress is like a painting, it can be any other painting, or it
can be a masterpiece. The balance between who the woman is, and what she is wearing, is what makes it unique and magical! My role
as a designer is to create a personal and unique expression of my client.
Creation is magical and fun! I am passionate about adding versatility into my custom designs and I have found that both my client
and their spouse will appreciate this added value in their clothing. For example, while designing a mother-of-the-bride or groom
dress, it’s fun to create a look that she expects to wear only once, and then surprise her when we find ways to design the dress so it
can be altered to wear to a cocktail party or out to dinner. (Husbands are usually excited by this additional value!) Most of the evening
looks I design have versatility built into them. For example, a mermaid design with a full skirt can be created with detachable pieces
that will turn it into a knee-length cocktail dress…… the possibilities are only limited by our collaboration and creativity!

Meet Roy & Rosemary, international pop-instrumental recording artists. From the stages of Carnegie Hall to Walt Disney
World Florida, pianist Roy Tan and violinist Rosemary Siemens have been capturing the hearts of audiences with their musical
versatility, soul- stirring passion, stellar musicianship and unique style.
Roy & Rosemary come from very diverse backgrounds, Roy from Singapore and Rosemary from a Mennonite farm in Plum
Coulee, Manitoba. Although they are from opposite sides of the world, they had similarities which would shape them into
becoming the musicians they are today and give them the skills for their inspirational duo. They each started with their
instruments at a very young ages (three years of age). They are both classically trained but also grew up playing in the church
where they were able to further hone their improvisational skills.
A very unique part of their show involves taking requests from the audience, often learning and arranging unfamiliar tunes
and even composing pieces instantly, thus inviting the audience in to be a part of the show and a key ingredient in the creative
process. They have in the past been commissioned to compose original and customized pieces for luxury weddings and other
special events.
This duo first came together at a show playing for the Canadian Tenors in 2007 at Walt Disney World for the 25th Anniversary
of the Children’s Miracle Network, not realizing that this first performance would lead to countless performances around
the world. In November of 2012, the duo released their debut pop- instrumental album “Once Upon a Dream”, featuring lush
arrangements of original works along with many familiar tunes like ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’, Moon River’, and ‘Hallelujah’.
The album is available on itunes as well as in stores across Canada.
The duo has worked with Malene Grotrian on numerous occasions, Rosemary often wearing a Malene Grotrian design in live
performances. She also launched Malene’s ‘Made to Measure’ Line performing on the runway in a one of a kind gown created
specifically for her. Malene Grotrian’s couture dress was featured on the cover of their debut album “Once Upon a Dream” Her
clothes emulate the dreamlike nature and cinematic flair of the duo’s music.
Roy & Rosemary are excited to be involved with Malene Grotrian in a new venture, as part of a exclusive Private Performance
Style Soirees. These soirees are auctioned off to a select group of charities and offer a group of women, an evening of wonderful
food, private live concert by Roy & Rosemary, beautiful jewels by Maharani Jewels, and a private fashion show as well as the
chance to try gorgeous designs by Malene Grotrian.
Roy & Rosemary most recently recorded a single with Mary Zilba (from “The Real Housewives of Vancouver”) for a film written
and produced by Frank Giustra (Lionsgate Entertainment). In the past they have worked with Grammy winning producer Ian
Prince, 5 time Juno award winning producer Sam Reid from Glass Tiger, and Vancouver’s own multiple award winning film
composer and producer Daryl Bennett.
pHoTos by scoTT AdolpH
22
The duo who make their homes in Vancouver, have performed in a diverse number
of venues ranging from intimate house concerts, to concerts at New York’s famed
‘Carnegie Hall’, a performance as the first ever instrumentalist at St. Peter’s
Basilica at the Vatican; at the Egyptian Consulate in Washington DC; at the Miss
America pageant in Las Vegas, entertaining for Donald Trump at his Mar-A-Lago
estate in Palm Beach; as well as performances at the 2008 Beijing and
the 2010 Vancouver Olympics; and even opening Hockey Night in Canada.
The next venture for Roy & Rosemary is to take their show on a North
American tour, featuring cinematic songs accompanied by movie
projections in the background to create a soundtrack with visuals to
enhance the musical journey. The tour will include notable special
guests and be accompanied by their very own orchestra.
Keep your eyes and ears out for their North American tour.

...when a Daughter witnesses her Mother celebrate her own body, the way it was made, uniquely for her. Imagine the day when
a Daughter and Mother can celebrate the ways in which they are different from others, when they can view these differences
as attributes and strengths, and be comfortable in their own skin... the day when each woman can appreciate and nurture the
vehicle that is her body and mind, with fuel that is love and acceptance.
I grew up surrounded by girlfriends and women who were constantly dieting. It became a culture to criticize your own body.
Why do we do this? Is it to create empathy amongst one another? I promised myself that I would not become the generator of
an environment in which women criticize themselves. Why is it that we don’t facilitate a positive, celebratory foundation? Are
we afraid it could be viewed as bragging? Shouldn’t we be using words to inspire and motivate living a healthier life? If that is the
case, could there be a more positive approach?
I have been called “refreshing for my industry”, “real”, and “down to earth”. It goes beyond my comprehension that being ourselves
is refreshing; in fact, I find it saddening. When we are ourselves, we allow others to be! What a wonderful gift to give, to allow
others to simply be themselves, without judgement. Just imagine, enriching the next generation with this incredible possibility of
self-acceptance… .
At Malene Grotrian Design we hope to inspire women to be real in an unreal world, with designs that celebrate a woman’s body.
Our designs are created with the intention of allowing each individual to create a personal expression of who they really are.

f A s H I o No N p u r p o s E
To try and make a difference, to inspire through fashion and art is what gives purpose to my life! Making a
difference can be the most difficult to do for those who are closest to us. Making a difference begins with
believing we ARE significant and can in fact make a difference. Then... just TRY. Life will challenge our beliefs, but
helping others to grow to their full potential is what makes me work on my best potential. I have seen the impact
it creates when inspiring others.
We have the power within our actions, thoughts, words and being, every day.
What once seemed like arbitrary involvement in a local fundraising event has, over time, become our purpose
and HOW we do business at Malene Grotrian Design. We have grown through our involvement with
philanthrophy. Supporting charities as a way of doing business has shown me the meaning of “givers gain”. This
way of getting involved began with our involvement in The Ovarian Cancer Canada Gala in 2010 and was an eye
opener as to the impact of one activity. Now more than 3 years later, we are creating our very own Full Circle
fashion fundraiser for OVCARE, BC’s Ovarian Cancer Research Team. The majority of our clients have come
to us as a result of supporting community charity. The fashion and arts community has a tremendous reach and
ability to impact others and make a difference!
In the past 4 years Malene Grotrian Design has proudly donated more than $87,000 in value to charity, as we
continue to inspire other small to mid-size businesses to get involved. We have created a number of truly unique
design and art donation packages along with our partners who share the same belief and values of giving back
and getting involved.
Our actions, thoughts and words are like droplets of water creating circles in the ocean, continuously expanding
in circumference. Our small “insignificant” drops will continue to build into larger and larger circles. Continue to
leave inspirational droplets in your ocean, and you will witness the impact in your life, your career, your business,
and your community.

Vancouver based, Olympic Gold Medalist & World Champion Skier, Keynote Speaker, Commentator, Spokesperson and campaign
model for Malene Grotrian, this woman has many titles and is a true representative of today’s greatest sport’s talent in Canada.
Skiing is a way of life for me. I will always be a skier. I’m just shifting my focus from racing to freeskiing, allowing myself the freedom
and flexibility to focus on other life endeavors. When I hurt my knee at the X Games a year after the Olympics, I promised my coaches,
and I promised myself, that I would do everything in my power to rehabilitate it and, once it was all healed up, I would see if the mental
drive to continue racing would come back. A part of my motivation to continue racing beyond the 2010 Games was that I felt like I had
a responsibility to take on the role as a leader on the Canada Skicross Team, and make sure the up and come-ers – the future of our
beloved sport – had me to learn from.
s u p p o r T A N d s u c c E s sThe emotion I felt at the end of the Gold Medal Run at the Olympics was relief, and that was purely because I recognized everything
that everyone had done to help me along the way, and how much support I had from family, teachers, and coaches, to leaders within
the team, ski techs, and physiotherapists.. I felt like we had finally put our sport on the map and I couldn’t just quit. Over the years I
have learned that you can’t have success if you don’t have that support but I also know that you won’t have success if you aren’t in it for
the right reasons.
My sport has been my life for the past 20-something years, but there is more to life than competitive sport and I’ve realized that. I also
have a responsibility to be a positive role model when it comes to what’s truly important in life and to know when enough is enough
and that it’s time to move forward and chase different dreams.
c H A s I N G d r E A M sFor me, it was never about competing or achieving great results until the opportunity came to represent our country in this sport that
was built for people like me. It has always been about having fun and pushing myself. My career has taught me a lot about persevering
and chasing your dreams, tackling goals one step at a time, and avoiding getting too overwhelmed by the end result that you’re after.
Working with a team has taught me about group dynamics and relationships, and has allowed me to make lifelong friends and create
memories that I will cherish forever..
My career has taken me to beautiful places all over the world and given me the opportunity to participate in all sorts of fun events,
and to meet amazing people, including my fiancé, Jay Demerit. Most of all, I have learned how to take challenges on and I have learned
what I’m capable of. What I’ve realized is that I don’t need to be racing to continue representing what’s important to me. I can’t wait to
take on new challenges and continue to inspire people.
