The Anderson House, Newcastle, New Brunswick, Canada - Standing Tall and ProudThe story of the house begins in the last century. Donald Morrison, who was married to Jane Fish, had the house

built in the 1880’s. Its architecture, with the mansard roof is very similar to the Old Manse Library and the W. S.Loggie house in Chatham.

In 1897 the Pleasant Street house was sold to George A. Lounsbury. George Lounsbury was married toAnnieClark and he worked with his brother-in-law George N. Clark in the firm established in 1878 on the NewcastleWharf. This is the Lounsbury Company that now has 13 branches.

George and Annie Lounsbury had a daughter Maude and a son G. Hollie. Maude married Herb McDonald inChatham and their children, Jack McDonald and Jean (McDonald) Burchill are grandchildren of G. A. Lounsbury.

The Lounsbury Company built a new brick store on the square in 1901 which burned in 1935. The present storewas built on the same site that summer.

It was during the residency of the Lounsbury family in the house that the street on the west was given the nameLounsbury Street.

George Lounsbury died in 1902, at the age of 46. The next year his widow sold the house to Rachel (Sinclair)Fish, wife of James O. Fish and moved to Fredericton to reside

Apartments for ServicemenBy Tim Rowan, Staff Writer

The Stars and Stripes, Monday, February 13, 1956

The 50-year-old widow of a former University of Maryland history professor is going into the apartment business inFrankfurt to provide “reasonably priced” flats to almost a score of married servicemen not authorized Army housing.

Margaret C. Lounsbury, of Washington, D.C., plans to open her five-story eighteen-apartment project “the first ofMay.” Located at 21 Broenner Str. in downtown Frankfurt, the pocket-size apartments will rent for from 280 to 295marks ($65 to $70) a month “according to size.”

“The apartments will be strictly for married service families – privates and corporals who are not given familyhousing in Germany,” the energetic mother of two married daughters said. Only requirement for getting an apartmentwill be the wife’s passport, Mrs. Lounsbury said.

Plans for running an apartment house have been under way ever since her husband Ralph G. Lounsbury wasfatally stricken with a heart attack late last spring.

“The idea occurred to me, what to Do?” she said. “I thought if I could get hold of a building, I could supportmyself and have a place to live.”

As planned the apartments will consist of a large bedroom-sitting room, a small kitchen and a bath or shower.Electricity will be extra, but all flats will be furnished. Though the apartment house actually has twenty apartments,Mrs Lounsbury will save two for occupancy by herself.

Notion of renting the apartment building especially for servicemen occurred to Mrs. Lounsbury after her twenty-one year old daughter Carolyn was married to Cpl. Joseph Kelso of Stuttgart, Germany, and the newlyweds foundadequate housing difficult to find. Her second daughter, Cecilla Melville, 25, is married to an American civilianemployed with EES in Nurnberg, Germany.

After agreeable – through fruitless – negotiations with the U.S. Army and the German government to obtain abuilding Mrs. Lounsbury met with Persian builder Ali Selmi and contracted to rent his new structure still underconstruction.

“What with advance rent and providing furniture and furnishings this is costing me around $20,000,” Mrs.Lounsbury said. “The money is mine plus some I had borrowed. Naturally, I didn’t do this without advice and help. Ihad American attorney Thomas C. Lancian, former HICOG prosecutor, doing all my legal work for me.”

Transactions involved in becoming a business woman on the German economy “would fill a book” MrsLounsbury said. Though this is her first big venture, Mrs. Lounsbury explained that she is a graduate of the LewisHotel School of Washington, D.C., and was a zone manager in the Frankfurt Army billeting office during 1952-53.She had charge of 1,100 Army dwellings and several hundred domestic personnel.

Preventing her from opening the apartment house before mid-spring is the present winter weather, Mrs. Lounsburyexplained.

“The building is just a shell. Pipes and wiring have gone in, but the cold is holding up plastering. After the plaster, you have to wait six weeks to put in wall paper.”Editor’s Note: Does anyone know their connection?

Winnipeg, Manitoba — LESLIE LOUNSBURY, a Métis woman from Manitoba, has fulfilled her life-long dream withthe launch of the first ever national magazine for and about Aboriginal youth-SAY Magazine. SAY stands for Spiritof Aboriginal Youth.Editor’s Note: Does anyone know her connection?

Dear AncestorYour tombstone stands among the rest, neglected and alone.

The name and date are chiseled outon polished, marbled stone.

It reaches out to all who careit is too late to mourn.

You did not know that I exist. You died and I was born.

Yet each of us are cells of youin flesh

in blood, in bone. Our blood contracts and beats a pulse entirely not our own.

Dear Ancestor,the place you filled

one hundred years agoSpreads out among the oneswho would have loved you so.

I wonder if you knew That somedayI would find this spot, and come to visit you.Author – unknown
