Lounsbury Lingo

You will notice a wide variety of surname spellings associated with the Lounsbury Tree. The most commonspelling is “Lounsbury” though “Lounsberry” and “Lounsbery” are also prevalent. In 99% of researched cases, Canadiansand Americans with these surname spellings are linked by common ancestors: Richard Lounsbury and Elizabeth(Pennoyer) Lounsbury of what is now Rye, NY, who were married there in 1670. There are many other surnamevariations who fit our extended family tree, including Lansbury (though apparently not the famous actress AngelaLansbury), Lainspeary, and Lonsberry.

For simplicity, we use the letter “L” to denote the surname regardless of its spelling. Hence the phrasing “L” Treeat the top of this page.

NOTE: Somewhere someone has noted a 1930 US Census in Michigan for Fremont L. Lounsbury. He would be the son ofIRA DANIEL LOUNSBURY. In the 1920 US Census he and his family were living in Seattle, King Co., WA. and he wasworking for a security company. Anyone who views that 1930 US Census can plainly see where he was. But, that is him. There is no 1930 US Census for his wife or children, who were probably living back in WI at the time.

Hi, Bill,

Just brought up issue #49 of the L Tree and noticed a couple of rather unimportant dates. Just thought that to keep therecords straight, I should mention them and if you have an eraser handy you might eliminate any future confusion.

Issue # 49, Page 11, line 15 dealing with Benjamin Howard Lounsbury and his wife Edna Mae Woodruff (mygrandparents). Both died in Oskaloosa, IA and both now buried in Canby, IA. May have had funerals in the Canby area.

Of their children, Alice Gwendolyn Lounsbury (my mother); Died in Oskaloosa, IA on August 11, 2009 at age 102 years,9+ months and is buried there in Forest Cemetery She had married Harold Willis Parker in 1929 and had four children, allstill living: Richard Willis (me), William Boyd, Nancy Diane, and John Kenneth Wayne.

I enjoy the publication tho I'm not really into genealogy that heavy, but I seem to have "inherited" a lot of my mother's oldfamily papers after her death last August. I got my slight interest after reading a lot of 130 year old letters written by andto Ellen L. Aspinwall/Hawes/Lounsbury about her life and times. They really brought her to life for me. We are trying topreserve those and many more from other Aspinwalls for future readers.

Thanks for your efforts,

Dick

(by the way; A picture of mom and her grandfather Benjamin Piper Lounsbury, posted in the last issue lists me as RichardWoodruff instead of Parker. Woodruff was my maternal grandmother's maiden name, so somehow that leaked in. Noproblem)
