Lounsbury Lingo

You will notice a wide variety of surname spellings associated with the Lounsbury Tree. The most commonspelling is “Lounsbury” though “Lounsberry” and “Lounsbery” are also prevalent. In 99% of researched cases,Canadians and Americans with these surname spellings are linked by common ancestors: Richard Lounsbury andElizabeth (Pennoyer) Lounsbury of what is now Rye, NY, who were married there in 1670. There are many othersurname variations who fit our extended family tree, including Lansbury (though apparently not the famous actressAngela Lansbury), Lainspeary, and Lonsberry.

For simplicity, we use the letter “L” to denote the surname regardless of its spelling. Hence the phrasing “L”Tree at the top of this page.

Reverend Lewis Dexter Lounsburysometimes known as Dexter L. Lounsbury

He was born in December 1843 in Connecticut and died in September 1879 when his wife shot him while

he was asleep. The Reverend was also a physician. Lewis Dexter Lounsbury, son of Allen Lounsbury and Maria

Bethany Sketches: He was a man of excellent judgment and was regarded as one of the most thorough and thriftyfarmers in the town. He lived for a long time in a little house much too small for the convenience of his eleven

children, but in 1811, before his twelfth child was born, he built what was then the largest and the most costlyhouse in the town. He at one time owned fourteen hundred acres of land in Bethany and in New York State. Onwhat was then his farm, a few rods from the old homestead, is the Lounsbury cemetery, which was set apart byTimothy and enclosed with a neat and strong fence. (page130)

prepared for college at Wilbraham Academy, and graduated from Yale Medical School in 1837.For a short time, he practiced medicine in Hamden, before moving to Oxford, Connecticut, in1840. He specialized in chronic diseases. In April 1843, Lounsbury married Mary Church, whohad been a teacher in New York and Connecticut. He was an advocate of Episcopal parochialschools for girls and attempted to establish one in Oxford. Throughout his life, Lounsbury enjoyedwriting poetry. He died on April 6, 1895, in Oxford, Connecticut.

Notes for Timothy Lounsbury:Timothy4 tenth child of Josiah3 and Ruth (Lines) Lounsbury, m. Hannah, daughter of Nathan Smith ofWoodbridge. This Hannah remembers well when the lower green of New Haven, Connecticut, was an alderswamp. The green is now called Rooster Square. At the date of her death (April 4, 1828) Alvin Sperry presented abill of $3.50 to her estate for her coffin which he had made. This bill is among more than one hundred old deedsin the possession of the New Haven Colony Historical Society. (Note: The New Haven Colony Historical Societyhas a record of receiving deeds as Emma has indicated, but the librarian could not locate them in the library. Sheexplained that the deeds were not processed when received and were stored in the basement with a vast number ofother unprocessed documents. She said that the Society had neither the funds nore the personnel to process thedocuments in the foreseeable future. The only records found were some account books of Timothy5 ). ALBERT "AL" REYNOLDS LOUNSBURY, 92, of Saratoga Springs and most recently a resident of the WestmereHome for Adults in Guilderland, died peacefully on March 7, 2014 surrounded byfamily members at Albany Medical Center. Al was born on July 17, 1921 inHurleyville in Sullivan County, to the late Grace E. Reynolds and Daniel W.Lounsbury. In 1948, he married the late Dorothy E. Elmore, devoted wife, mother,and school teacher. Al graduated from Hurleyville High School, received abachelor's degree from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, CornellUniversity, and a master's degree from North Carolina State University. He was apast president of the Alumni Association of the College of Agriculture and LifeSciences at Cornell. Al assisted his parents with dairy and poultry farming inHurleyville until he enlisted in 1946, serving with the Army of Occupation inKorea as an assistant chaplain. After studies at Cornell, he was employed bySaratoga County Extension Services, now Cornell Cooperative Extension, as a 4-H agent from 1956 to 1979. Al was president of the Saratoga Springs Kiwanisclub twice, and in 1980 assisted in organizing the Golden K Kiwanis club for

seniors. Activities after retirement included organizing the Saratoga Farmers Market, the Friends of the Ulysses S. GrantCottage, and the Southern Adirondack Beekeepers Association. He was also president of several other communitygroups and active in the United Methodist Church throughout his life. Al's hobbies and other interests includedgenealogy, beekeeping, family history and reunions, compiling four family histories, gardening and, most importantly,being with his immediate and extended families. Al was predeceased by his beloved wife of more than 40 years,Dorothy, in 1989; infant son, Lynn Al; and his brother, H. James Lounsbury in 2013. He is survived by a son, David ofKerhonkson; two daughters, Lee A. (John Bailly) of Albany, and Cathy of Saratoga Springs; and a foster son, RichardH. Harrison of Saratoga Springs. He is also survived by two sisters, Alida Brinckerhoff of Middletown and Joan Dunn-Lindsay of Wurtsboro. Surviving brothers in his wife's family are Russell Elmore of Lennox, Mass., I. James (Ruth)Elmore of Orange City, Fla., and Walter (Mary) Elmore of High Falls. Al has two grandchildren, Amanda and NicholasBailly; a foster grandson, Richard L. Harrison; and two step-grandchildren, Timothy (Amanda) Coalla and Katie Coalla.He has many beloved nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grand-nephews and others in his extended family. Family and

DARLENE LOUNSBURY, born DARLENE MAY RICE on May 5, 1942, died January 4, 2013, in her homein Yamhill. She was born in North Dakota and moved to Oregon at age 3 weeks. Shespent her life taking care of her family and working in the retail industry for over 40years.

She is survived by her husband, Ray “Dusty,” age 74, of Yamhill; daughter,Sandra “Sandy,” age 51, of Yamhill; son, Scott, age 47, of Oroville California;grandson, Chris, age 32, of Hillsboro; and her brother, Harlen, age 73, of Portland.Preceding her in death were her parents, Lloyd Rice and Irene Rice of Portland.

Bob was born July 17, 1922 in Des Moines, IA, to Harold and Helen (Headlee)Lounsberry. He was a 1941 graduate of Roosevelt High School. Bob was an Army Air Corpsveteran during World War II. He was a pilot in the China-Burma-India theatre, flying 72 missionsover the Himalayan mountains. In September of 1947, Bob married Harriett Louise Watkins inDes Moines where they made their home. Bob graduated from Drake University in 1950. Heworked as a sales representative with Ortho Pharmaceutical Corp. (J&J) for 36 years, retiring in1987 as one of the top salesmen for the company over the course of his career. Bob was a memberof the Masons, the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine, the Izaak Walton League, and the CBI "Hump" PilotAssociation. Bob was an avid worldwide traveler; he enjoyed RV camping, was an outdoor sports

enthusiast and enjoyed gardening.He is survived by his sister, Patricia Ann (Noel) Shanko of Apopka, Florida; three children, Linda (Fred)

Berneking of Waterloo, Iowa, Scott Lounsberry of Parker, Colorado and Brian (Edie) Lounsberry of Thiensville,Wisconsin; five grandchildren, Erin (Corey) Fanton, Steven Berneking, Christina (Chase) Keller, Erica Lounsberry andAnna (Joshua) Sawyer; and two great-grandchildren, Amelia Keller and William Sawyer. Bob was preceded in death byhis wife, Harriett in 1981.

PETER A. LOUNSBURY, Sr., 68, of Framingham, died at home on Saturday, January 19, 2013.He was the loving husband of 47 years to Susan Jane (Doig) Lounsbury of Framingham.Born in Everett, he was the son of the late Albert and Dorothy (Grout) Lounsbury.He proudly served his country as a Sergeant in the United States Air Force during Vietnam from 1963 to 1967.

He was employed by Digital/Intel at the Hudson Semi Conductor Plant for 28 years as an engineer. He was a proudvolunteer for the American Cancer Society Road for Recovery. He was an avid photographer and genealogy enthusiast.

Besides his wife Susan, he is survived by his son Peter A. He was an avid Ohio State Buckeye and Cincinnati Bengalfan. The family expressed that Brett was a great son, brother, dad, uncle and friend. Brett was always smiling and willbe dearly missed by all his family and many friends.

Brett was Vice President of A&B Asphalt Maintenance in Mainville, OH, and also worked for the Blue ChipPaving Co., in Cincinnati, OH. He was also a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church in Sidney.

RUTH E. LOUNSBERRY, 91, peacefully passed into eternity to be with her Lord and Savior onFebruary 27, 2013. Ruth was born on October 2, 1921. She graduated from Indianola High School in 1939 as aNational Merit Scholar and was presented with a scholarship to Simpson College. She completedNormal School Training and taught in rural Warren County Schools. In 1945 she was joined inmarriage to Perry William Lounsbury, an active duty member of the Army Air Corps.

Together they co-founded Lounsbury Landscaping. Ruth was a very involved parent intheir children's school activities, PTA, Scouts and church. She loved traveling and attending schooland sporting events of her ten grandchildren.

Ruth had 90 wonderful healthy, active years of life which touched and blessed many. She will be missed by allwho knew her caring and thoughtful ways.

She is survived by her six children, daughters, Rebecca, Vivian, Carol Kerr; sons, Perry Wesley (DeeDee), Andy(Brenda), Ben (Jean); and grandchildren, Andrew, Hannah, Jessie, Shelby, Chaney, Natalie, William, Lauren, Lee andLuke. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Perry.

John was born on May 3, 1935 in Lincoln County, KS, the son of Howard M. and LauraRuth Watson Lounsbury.

He was a 1957 graduate of the University of Kansas with a B.S. in Education. While atKU, he was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity.

He served his country in the US Marine Corps as a pilot and retired in 1962, as a 1stLieutenant, after five years service.

He was a member of the First Christian Church in Lawrence and served there as Treasurer on the Board ofTrustees and as a deacon. While in St. Joseph, MO, he was a member of the Masonic Lodge and served on the Board ofthe YMCA. He had served on several savings and loan boards while in Missouri. In Lawrence, he was a member of theNew Generation Society.

He married Nancy A. Deniston on November 23, 1957 in Topeka, KS. She preceded him in death on March 9,2004. He then married Susie Madsen on August 27, 2005 in Lawrence, KS. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include two sons, Todd (wife, Lisa) Lounsbury of Lee's Summit, MO, Chris (wife, Ann)Lounsbury, of Lawrence, KS; two stepsons, John Madsen of San Diego, CA, Scott, Madsen, of Prescott, AZ; two stepdaughters, Kim Beeler, of Lawrence, KS, Kirsten Rysko, of Overland Park, KS; a granddaughter, Sarah Lounsbury; andeight step grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, James C. Lounsbury.

KATHRYN LOUNSBURY, 87, of Utica, passed away April 28, 2013, at Heritage Health Care Center. She was bornApril 28, 1926, in Utica, the daughter of Edward and Nellie Hughes. Kathryn was a graduate of Faxton Hospital Schoolof Nursing. On September 17, 1949 she married Emerson Lounsbury, who has predeceased her. Gene was a devoted family man who's family came first, product of hismid-west values and a member of the greater generation. Her parents were Rev. and Mrs. Haddon Klingberg and her grandparents were Dr. and Mrs.John Eric Klingberg, the founder of the Children's Home. Her early years of school were spent in the middle west whereher father had churches and the family moved back East in her last year of high school, as her father was needed at theHome. Carolyn went on to Central Connecticut State University and received her Bachelor's and Master's degrees andtaught school in the New Britain system for 35 years. She also directed the Headstart Program for three years. Shemarried Alden Lounsbury in 1952 and they had two daughters: Beth (Mrs. David Iverson) of Missouri and Sue (Mrs.Robert Briere) of East Hampton. She is also survived by three grandchildren: Jay, Jessica and Kathryn; a great-granddaughter, Hannah; and her brother, Dr. 'Don Klingberg of Chicago. Carolyn and her husband retired in 1987 andmoved to Cape Coral, FL where they enjoyed the weather, friends and a wonderful church. After Alden's death, Carolynmoved into a condo where she stayed until 2005, when the Lord miraculously showed her the way to Covenant Village.She loved her new home, the wonderful folks, food and fun and being "back home".

Lisa finished school, Lois worked at several places over the years, including Ben Moss Jewellers, Weekender'sClothing, and most recently, McInnis & Holloway as a Grief Counselor. She genuinely cared for people and wanted tohelp them feel at ease. DOROTHY VAN DRIEST LANSBERRY - Dorothy passed away at home on Oct. 22, 2013, less than two weeksbefore her 85th birthday. She is remembered as a wonderful, generous person who enjoyed hugs, dogs, family andfriends.

Dorothy, and identical twin sister Doris, were born in Roundup, MT, on Nov. 3, 1928, to parents Lena and FrankVan Driest. Both were schooled in Klein, Mont., and later Humboldt, Iowa, after which they attended Montana StateUniversity, earning degrees in nursing.

While at MSU, Dorothy met her future husband, Frank A. Lansberry, who helped her get through sometroublesome math classes. They were married in February 1951. Frank earned his degree in Civil Engineering and foundwork with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation at the Canyon Ferry Dam. This employment resulted in the family movingfrom Montana to North Dakota, to Virginia for a stint in Washington, D.C., and finally to the Glen Canyon Dam site atPage, Ariz. During these years, they were blessed with five children: Connie, Allen, Evie, Barbara and John.

Dorothy worked as a nurse at the new Page Hospital where she spearheaded the effort to procure an incubatorfor the maternity ward.

In Dorothy's later years she moved to Kalispell, Mont., where she found a warm community centered aroundSykes Restaurant and general store. Sykes welcomed locals, especially seniors, with 10-cent coffee, local musicians, andfree Thanksgiving dinners for all. Her good friend, Golda, and she were regular customers.

Dorothy eventually moved to Green Valley, Ariz., to be closer to family. There she met Ramona, her part-timecaregiver, who became a dear friend. Ultimately, as hearing and sight failed, Dorothy moved in with her daughterConnie in Rio Rico. It was there, in nearby Nogales, that Dorothy met with yet a new group at TOPS, womensupporting each other with weight loss. These women were to become especially cherished friends.

Dorothy is survived by her children: Connie Williams of Rio Rico, Evie Lansberry of Santa Monica, CA,Barbara Gaston of Austin, TX, John Lansberry of Pleasant Hill, CA; her grandchildren Mary Lansberry and Luc Gaston;and the little Yorkshire Terrier, Sheba, she called her "God moment."

A birthday party and celebration of life was held for Dorothy on Oct. 13 in Rio Rico, where her family andfriends joined together to wish her peace.

LOUNSBURY, KATHLEEN LAUREN 08/09/1955 ~ 10/26/2013 KIRKLAND, WA Kate Lounsbury was born onAugust 9, 1955 in Concord, MA to Barbara (Frink) and Warren Bean. She passed away on October 26, 2013, in

Kirkland, WA after several months of battling b-cell lymphoma. Kate lived most of her adult lifeon the West Coast in San Diego and the Seattle area, with several extended visits to France,Spain, Mexico and Eastern Europe. As a dancer and dance instructor, she graduated Cum Laudein 1987 from San Diego State University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and spent the next 12years in San Diego as an accomplished and highly lauded modern dancer, working with a varietyof professional troupes. She married Dan Fiolkoski in 1982 and the couple moved to the Seattlearea in 1990 where she continued work as a Dance Teacher and Educator and as a Dancer. Sheeventually earned a CLMA - Master's Certification as a Movement Analyst in 1999. After hermarriage ended in 1999, Kate continued her involvement in the dance community while movinginto the business world for the next ten years. She earned a Masters of Arts in AppliedBehavioral Science in 2002 from the Leadership Institute of Seattle. Kate is survived by family

members including two brothers (Steve Bean and Bill Lounsbury), three sisters (Marcia Depillo, Jan Manseau, andBarbara Lounsbury- Roussouliere), and several nieces and nephews. Kate's mother, Barbara Bean, predeceased her bynine days on October 17. A memorial/ celebration event is planned for Saturday, December 7th, aboard a BainbridgeIsland bound State Ferry that will be leaving Pier 52 at 801 Alaskan Way in Seattle at 9:35a.m. On January 24, 25, and26, 2014, the dance company currently directed by Shirley Jenkins (DanceJENKINSDance) will perform a concert ofdances dedicated in Kate's honor. The performance will be held at the Cornish Playhouse at the Seattle Center. Kate was

Sylvia (Lounsbury) Martin, and the beloved wife of Dale Conde. They were married on August 14, 1942. She was amember of Naples United Church of Christ, Naples Florida and Second Congregational Church, Rockford, IL. She wasa member of Delta Gamma Sorority, P.E.O., Daughters of the American Revolution, and Rockford Women's Club.Sylvia graduated from the University of Illinois with a B.A., with a teaching certificate. For many years she was amember of Quail Creek Country Club, Naples, FL and a member of Rockford Country Club, where for several years shewas chairman of the Ladies 18 Hole Group and was an avid tennis player. Sylvia enjoyed traveling and she and herhusband, Dale, traveled extensively. She enjoyed playing in duplicate bridge tournaments and also was in several bridgeclubs in Rockford and Naples. Survivors include her husband, Dale F. Conde of Naples, FL and Rockford; son, Douglas(Robin) Conde of Boise, Idaho; granddaughters, Melissa (Steven) Giles of Crown Point, Indiana, Amy (Benjamin)Groff of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Kelly Conde of Stanley, Idaho; grandsons, Zachary (Hollie) Conde of Boise, Idaho,and Seth Conde of Portland, Oregon; and great-grandchildren, Joshua and Madeleine Groff. Her daughter, SusanVieweg, son-in-law, Rick Vieweg, son, Dale Philip Conde, and daughter, Sara Conde, predeceased her. PAUL E. VISINTINI, 77, of Watson Hill Road in Topsham, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014, athis home in West Topsham. He and his beloved wife of 56 years, Dawn Lounsbury Visintini, hadrelocated to Vermont from Baltic, Conn., in 2002.

Paul was born in Chaplin, Conn., Nov. 27, 1936, the son of Joseph and Mae (Guay)Visintini.

Paulie graduated from Windham Technical School and went into the family poultrybusiness. He later became construction foreman for Builders Concrete and Cherenzia Excavation,until he retired in 2000.

Paulie was an avid woodworker and golfer. He was always happy to lend a helping handto his family and friends. He took great pride in teaching others to enjoy another favorite pastime, snowmobiling.

Besides his wife, Dawn, he is survived by two sons, Paul E. Visintini Jr. and his wife, Joyce, of New York, andKipling "Kippy" Visintini, of Connecticut; two grandchildren; five sisters, Viola Waitte, Louise Lathrop, MargaretDennehy, Yolanda Gardner and Joanne Nasin; many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph Sr. and Mae (Guay) Visintini, and a brother, Joe "Junior" Visintini.

LANSBERRY, VEDA M. 92, of Friendship Village, Tempe passed away on August 28, 2013.Veda was born November 19, 1920, at Camas Creek, Idaho, to Jonathan and Annie Hoopes.Raised in Dubois, Idaho, she was athletic as a teenager, playing basketball, softball and tennis.She married Milford A. Lansberry in 1939 and together they published the Ashton Herald forseven years. Veda also ran a spudnut shop where donuts were made from potato flour. In 1953,the family moved to Tempe. Veda worked for the City of Tempe for five years as clerk of theMunicipal Court and was employed for 17 years as the church and social reporter for the TempeDaily News. She was preceded in death by her parents, nine brothers and sisters, her husband andtwo grandchildren. She is survived by children, Dan (Elaine) Lansberry of Tucson, Susan (John)Tanner of Mesa, Mark (Candace) Lansberry of Las Vegas, Nevada, JoEllen (Phil) Doornbos ofParadise Valley, Lori (Jack) Myrick of Buckeye, and Bill (Bernadette) Lansberry of Chandler; 18

JANETTE C. LOUNSBURY, 84, a resident of Wassaic, NY, since 1975 and formerly of Katonah, NY, died onMonday, November 4, 2013 at her home in Wassaic, NY. Mrs. Lounsbury was a bank teller at Pawling Savings Bank inDover Plains, NY retiring in 1995.

Born on August 4, 1929 in North Salem, NY, she was the daughter of the late Howard and Margaret (Day)Conner. Mrs. Lounsbury graduated North Salem High School and was the class of 1947 Valedictorian. On April 5, 1948in North Salem, NY, she married George S. Lounsbury, Jr. who predeceased her on March 3, 1997. Mrs. Lounsbury wasa volunteer at the Amenia Library, Amenia Voter Polls and a member of the Dover Plains United Methodist Church inDover Plains, NY.

She is survived by her two sons, Mark Lounsbury and his wife, Susan, of Wassaic, NY and David Lounsburyand his wife, Evelyn, of Naples, FL and a brother, Richard Conner of Cortland, NY. She is also survived by eightgrandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Besides her husband and parents, Mrs. Lounsbury was predeceased by twobrothers, Milton and Bruce Conner.

RICHARD CHARLES LOUNSBURY, affectionately known as Chuck to family and friends, lost his courageous threeand a half year battle with cancer on March 6, 2014. He was born on May 1, 1938 in NewYork City, New York to the late Edward and late Helen Lounsbury. He had many fondchildhood memories of spending time with family on Solomons Island, Maryland. He waspreceded in death by his only brother, Dennis Lounsbury.

Chuck graduated with both undergraduate and master's degrees in engineering fromNew York University. He proudly served his country as a pilot for the US Navy on the USSForrestal where he flew an F-4 fighter jet. After leaving the military, he worked as a structuralengineer for several large projects, including the construction of the Twin Towers in NewYork City. Never one to sit still, he continued to work in his later years as the maintenancefacilitator at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.

Chuck is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Janice Lounsbury, of Frederick,Maryland. He is also survived by three daughters; Donna Lounsbury of Hicksville, New York, Kendra (Noll) Schwiesoand her husband, Nicholas Schwieso of Frederick, Maryland, and Kelly Lounsbury and her long time companion,Michael Brown Jr. of Frederick, Maryland. Also surviving are two sons, James Lounsbury and his wife Dawn Lounsburyof Albrightsville, Pennsylvania, and William Lounsbury and his fiancé Kim Le of Pocono Summit, Pennsylvania. WILLIAM "BILL" LOUNSBURY went to be with The Lord March 6th, 2014 while resting peacefully at home. Dadwas born August 5th, 1932 to Earl & Delilah Lounsbury in Ottumwa Iowa where he lived untilhe joined the National Guard at the age of 15. Dad then joined the Navy at the age of 17 and waseventually stationed in San Diego where he met our Mom Jean and raised us 3 kids. After leavingthe Navy Dad worked construction until he bought his first dump truck in 1957 and started hisown construction business. Dad built many County Parks William Heise, Potrero, San Dieguito,Yorba Linda, Irvine, he worked his last 23 years for Street Properties developing many acres ofthe Otay Mesa area where he retired at the age of 78. Dad's biggest joy in life was spending timewith family and friends, whether at the motocross track supporting the kids he sponsored, at thedesert hitting the dunes in his buggy, or simply sitting down to chat. Our Dad was one of a kind, ahumble man who was always involved in our lives, he will be dearly missed by many.
