T he writer to the Hebrews declares that God has spoken to us in the best possible way – by Jesus Christ the Son of God, who became the Son of Man. The Gospel is so glori-ous that only Christ can fully reveal it in all its splendor. The One for whom and by whom the worlds were created, who radiates the eternal Glory of the Father, who in his person is indistinguishable from the infinite God, who by his own power preserves and maintains the world he loves, this same Jesus purged our sins by his death for us. Because Christ sacri-ficed himself for us, God the Father Almighty has exalted him, placing him at his own right hand. Is it any wonder that God is seeking men and women who will worship the Son? That’s why we’ve gathered here today. We’re glad you’re here with us to celebrate Christ.

The Lord’s Day—January 28, 2018 Worship In Spirit and Truth

Prelude

The prelude is a musical bridge from our busy lives to entering this hour of worship. How we enter may vary- some may share their joy, welcoming and encouraging others; others may need comfort, or to quietly settle their hearts and minds. God is honored in all these ways as we share and receive the grace and peace of Christ. Our service will begin when the prelude ends.

*Call to Worship Psalm 40:1-5 ESV

I waited patiently for the LORD; he inclined to me and heard my cry. He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the LORD.Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the LORD.Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the LORD.Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the LORD. Blessed is the man who makes the LORD his trust, who does not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after a lie! You have multiplied, O LORD my God, your wondrous deeds You have multiplied, O LORD my God, your wondrous deeds You have multiplied, O LORD my God, your wondrous deeds You have multiplied, O LORD my God, your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us; none can compare with you! and your thoughts toward us; none can compare with you! and your thoughts toward us; none can compare with you! and your thoughts toward us; none can compare with you! I will proclaim and tell of them, yet they are more than can be told. I will proclaim and tell of them, yet they are more than can be told. I will proclaim and tell of them, yet they are more than can be told. I will proclaim and tell of them, yet they are more than can be told.

*Hymn of Entrance Hymnal, 181

1 We come O Christ to you, true Son of God and man, By whom all things consist, in whom all life began: In you alone we live and move, and have our being in your love. 2 You are the Way to God, your blood our ransom paid; In you we face our Judge and Maker unafraid. Before the throne absolved we stand, your love has met your law’s demand. (continued)

* Please stand if you are able. Parents, please escort underage children leaving the service.

3 You are the living Truth! All wisdom dwells in you, The source of every skill, the one eternal TRUE! O great I AM! In you we rest, sure answer to our every quest. 5 We worship you, Lord Christ, our Savior and our King, To you our youth and strength adoringly we bring: So fill our hearts that all may view your life in us, and turn to you.

Armation of Faith Nicene Creed

I believe in one God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, of all things visi-ble and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father; by whom all things were made; who for us and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary, and was made man, and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; he suffered and was buried, and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; and he shall come again, with glory, to judge both the living and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glori-fied; who spoke by the prophets; and I believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church; I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resur-rection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Confession and Prayer Colossians 1:21 NIV

Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior.

Father, you have made us to live in intimacy with you and not in alienation. Our selfish-ness causes harm to our relationship with you, and we need you to empower us to put you first in our lives. We long to become servants of you. So, hear our confession as we pause to reflect and meditate on the ways our sin has alienated us from you, from inner peace, and from each other.

Words of Grace and Peace Colossians 1:11-15 ESV

May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endur-ance and patience with joy, giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. He has delivered us from the domain of dark-ness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemp-tion, the forgiveness of sins. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.

*Hymn of Redemption Hymnal, 648 1My Jesus, I love thee, I know thou art mine; For thee all the follies, of sin I resign. My gracious Redeemer, my Savior art thou; If ever I loved thee, my Jesus, ‘tis now. 2I love thee because thou hast first loved me, And purchased my pardon on Calvary’s tree. I love thee for wearing the thorns on thy brow; If ever I loved thee, my Jesus, ‘tis now. 3I’ll love thee in life, I will love thee in death; And praise thee as long as thou lendest me breath; And say, when the death-dew lies cold on my brow: If ever I loved thee, my Jesus ‘tis now. 4In mansions of glory and endless delight, I’ll ever adore thee in heaven so bright; I’ll sing with the glittering crown on my brow: If ever I loved thee, my Jesus, ‘tis now.
