October Poem by May Swenson Now and then, a red leaf riding the slow flow of gray water. From the bridge, see far into the woods, now that limbs are bare, ground thick-littered. See, along the scarcely gliding stream, the blanched, diminished, ragged swamp and woods the sun still spills into. Stand still, stare hard into bramble and tangle, past leaning broken trunks, sprawled roots exposed. Will something move?—some vision come to outline? Yes, there— deep in—a dark bird hangs in the thicket, stretches a wing. Reversing his perch, he says one “Chuck.” His shoulder-patch that should be red looks gray. This old redwing has decided to stay, this year, not join the strenuous migration. Better here, in the familiar, to fade.

October is the first full month of Fall and many people believe it is the prettiest time of the year. The trees are changing and the Fall decorations are bringing us some beautiful outdoor scenery. The German culture started celebrating Oktoberfest on October 12, 1810 in Munich, Germany but now many countries including the U.S. start this fun festival in September because the days are a little longer and the weather is a little warmer. The food is delicious and the beer is always flowing. The wurstl (sausages) and the sauerkraut and the big pretzels are just a few of the classic German fare that will bring joy to all who participate. Here in Cincinnati, we celebrate our German heritage with the world’s biggest chicken dance. Here at the Lodge, we will celebrate with an Oktoberfest luncheon on October 28 at 12:00. Maybe we will have to raise our mugs and say “Prost”. (Cheers) !

New Activity AssistantI would like to take a moment and introduce our new activities aide. Her name is Tonya Henson. Tonya has worked in the nursing field for almost 30 years. She has been with The Lodge for a little over a year. She has spent most of her time on Shelter Pointe, where she will continue as an activity aide. She has 3 children and 3 grand children. When she isn’t spending time with her children and grandkids, she enjoys hiking and camping. Tonya has been a wonderful addition to our activities department.

Clara’s German Potato SaladIf you like a tarter sauce, add more vinegar; more sugar if you like it a bit sweeter.

Red potatoes are waxy and hold up well. Ditto for all purpose potatoes, like Yukon gold. White bakers are starchy and break up a little after cooking. But go ahead and use what you have.

IngredientsBoiled, peeled and sliced potatoes, kept warm, about 2 pounds or 6 cups, sliced 1/4” thick8 slices bacon, fried and crumbled – save drippings (I had about 1/4 cup from thick sliced bacon)1 medium yellow or white onion diced, a good cup or so2-3 ribs celery, diced2 tablespoons flour2/3 cup cider vinegar or to taste1/3 cup water or to taste1/4 cup sugar or to tasteSalt and pepperParsley (optional)

Instructions

Cook onion and celery in drippings until tender but not brown.

Sprinkle flour over, stir and add vinegar and water. It will look lumpy. Boil until slightly thickened, whisking as you go, and then stir in sugar, salt and pepper.

Put potatoes and bacon in bowl, pour dressing over and stir gently until blended. Let sit a bit to absorb flavors, then adjust seasonings.

Garnish with parsley.

Tip: Warm potatoes absorb sauce better.

From the AdministratorAs stated in a previous letter, Santanna Rapp, RN our former Director of Nursing is now our Corpora te Director of Clinical Services. Brian Freeman, RN is our new Director of Nursing. Brian has many years experience as a Director of Nursing in long term care and we are very happy to have him working with our team. Welcome aboard Brian!!

I am delighted to say that we are still COVID free!!

Testing for nursing homes will be changing October 5, 2020. If the facility remains COVID-19 free, testing will be performed monthly. If we have an active case, testing will be done for all staff and residents twice a week until all tests are negative. Of course, if this happens, you will be notified.

As I stated in my last letter, indoor visitation will begin October 12, 2020. I will update you when we have further information.

Stay safe!!

I’m always available if you have any questions or issues to discuss.

From the Director of NursingHello everyone!

Just wanted to say as I reached my first official month at The Lodge, I am very impressed! I have many years in healthcare, and have been a part of many different teams. But the team here is top notch! I am amazed at how well everyone works together, and things get done. I am sure the root of this is the amount of longevity that exist here.

I am still working on getting to know everyone, so if you are passing by my office or see me on the units, say hi! I am not always great with names, so please be patient. I am planning on being a part of this team for a long time. Thank you all for being so welcoming!

October Poemby May Swenson

Now and then, a red leaf riding the slow flow of gray water. From the bridge, see far into the woods, now that limbs are bare, ground thick-littered. See, along the scarcely gliding stream, the blanched, diminished, raggedswamp and woods the sun stillspills into. Stand still, stare hard into bramble and tangle, past leaning broken trunks, sprawled roots exposed. Willsomething move?—some visioncome to outline? Yes, there—deep in—a dark bird hangs in the thicket, stretches a wing.Reversing his perch, he says one “Chuck.” His shoulder-patch that should be red looks gray. This old redwing has decided tostay, this year, not join thestrenuous migration. Better here,in the familiar, to fade.
