At the MemorialCare Breast Center at Saddleback Memorial, getting a mammogram can now be an easy, comfortable experience. Mention this ad, now through the end of the year, and we’ll provide a FREE mammopad, a soft cushion that increases comfort during your mammogram.

All of our images are reviewed by board certified radiologists who specialize exclusively in breast imaging. We provide digital mammography which is faster and increases both accuracy and quality.

So don’t put it off any longer. Get a more comfortable mammogram and results you can trust. Next day appointments for screening mammograms are available. Call today for an appointment at our San Clemente screening location, 949-452-7200.

Like shoes, some mammograms are more comfortable than others.

Let the fall festivities begin...Yesterday, I started unpacking boxes from the rafters in the garage, preparing to ready our house for a ghoulish Halloween (don’t wait, Christmas decorations are already hitting your local mall). I’ve had some great times dressing up for Halloween. Thinking back, my childhood costumes were typical - baseball player, cowboy, clown. As I entered high school, my creative side led me to dressing up as the Cookie Monster, a cheerleader and a member of the Hare Krishnas. As an adult, my best outfit had to be Chef from the classic cartoon South Park (which made for an interesting night out on the town). For your opportunity to get into costume, check out our story this month highlighting various local Halloween activities for you and the family.

October’s cover features Renaissance Home Furnishings in San Juan Capistrano. Owner, Dennis Penman, and his design staff are ready to transform your house into a home in time for the holidays. Stop by the showroom and don’t forget to say hello to Max!

As the owner of renais-sance home Furnishings in San Juan Capistrano, Dennis Penman is always driven to offer exceptional

décor for all areas of the home. Having served the community since 1998, the Re-naissance showroom provides an immense mix of traditional, transitional and contem-porary furniture styles.

At Renaissance Home Furnishings, custom-ers may find anything and everything they could possibly need to turn their house into a dream home. From custom plush sofas to amazing wood tables and unique accesso-ries, Renaissance offers an array of options for homeowners and interior designers.

“We pride ourselves on our high-quality fur-nishings selection, low prices, unmatched customer service and experienced design staff” says Penman. “Our designers, includ-ing Louise Chavira, Kate Plata and Robin Earp, are on the showroom floor to assist clients and also offer their design expertise through in-home consultations. The in-home service allows the designers to better guide the client in choosing the proper scale furniture, colors and an entire look for the home. Best of all, the in-home consultation is complimentary,” he added.

Renaissance’s clientele come from all over Southern California, drawn to the 11,000 sq. ft. shopper’s paradise. Customers can find hidden treasures from the great variety of upholstery, accent pieces, bedroom sets, cocktail tables and dining sets on the show-room floor. All items are available for imme-diate purchase and delivery.

Renaissance Home Furnishings normally receives new furniture daily and carries multiple manufacturers. “We attend the furniture expos and pick the best looks for the best prices and pass the savings on to our clients,” says Penman. “We sell directly off our showroom floor and we always have product on order. Custom orders are com-pleted very quickly and normally delivered in one to four weeks.”

“We have many repeat clients who return to furnish a new room or a new home, as well as first-time customers just moving into the area. Our reputation over the last 11 years has been excellent, and the word-of-mouth referrals we receive from previous clientele are always positive. Reputation is everything, and referrals from our satisfied customers are our most flattering form of advertising,” says Penman.

Another feature at Renaissance is the store’s

mascot, Max - a cute, mixed breed dog, which Penman rescued on Memorial Day Weekend. The two are pretty much permanent fixtures– pun intended – at the store. ”Kids and adults love to see Max. Often the kids sit and pet Max while the parents freely shop. With his underbite and mutt looks, he is so ugly he is cute,” Penman laughs.

Renaissance recently kicked off their largest sale event ever. A retirement sale event be-gan in late September and will run through November. The retirement sale is honoring recently retired founding partner Brett Dal-man. “Over $600,000 worth of new merchan-dise will be added to the sales floor from local warehouses, with back-up stock still avail-able,” Dennis added.

Dennis feels fortunate to be surrounded daily by beautiful décor and to work with his talent-ed staff, while serving a variety of personalities from his diverse clientele. He continued, “The best part of the business is when I receive phone calls from customers who thank us for not only providing them beautiful furnishings, but for helping make their house a home.”

The Renaissance family, including Max, take great pride in providing service to the sur-rounding communities and look forward to having you visit their local showroom.

OCTOBER 2009 ThElOCaldish.net

PICTURED: The beautiful spread from last year’s gala

Each March, San Juan Capistrano welcomes the Swallows back with a large parade, and in October, the Chamber bids them farewell with a celebration of food, wine, dancing and entertainment.

Entertainment at the event features dancing to two-time Grammy nominated artist Greg Adams and his band, Tower of Power, a ro-bust silent auction, and an outdoor Las Vegas-style gaming area featuring blackjack, craps and roulette with cash prizes for lucky win-ners. Legendary for the horn arrangements that created the signa-ture sound that has made Tower of Power one of the most enduring musical entities today, Adams is a founding member of the group, recording fourteen albums on four major labels and producing mil-lions in record sales. Adams will be playing a variety of familiar tunes to which you can dance the night away.

Celebrate San Juan Capistrano’s Italian connection as you stroll through the Mission’s inner courtyard transformed into “little Italy,” designed to represent San Juan’s sister city, Capestrano. Learn about San Giovanni di Capestrano, Junipero Serra’s inspiration for the city’s name, and enjoy authentic Italian breads, olive oils, sau-sages, pasta, wine, beer and more.

“This is one of the top Orange Coun-ty events. It’s held in a beautiful, his-toric location where the stars and the moon are part of the ambience, and it features top-notch food, wine and entertainment,” said Natalie Miller, event director for the Chamber. The Vintage at the Mission is an annu-al fundraiser to benefit the San Juan Capistrano Chamber of Commerce in support of local businesses and the historic Mission San Juan Capistrano. It started 13 years ago as a way for the Chamber of Commerce to help pro-mote local restaurants and wineries in the community. Over the years it has continued to grow and now at-tracts nearly 800 guests.

D I N I N G S E C T I O N :

It’s true that great things often come in small pack-ages and the old adage is proved out by Bistro 311’s small but mighty setting in Marbella Plaza. A southern California native, owner George Val-dovinos grew up in Costa Mesa and discovered

that his passion for food could only be fulfilled by owning his own restaurant. Bistro 311’s open kitchen provides the perfect way for him to chat with his cus-tomers and work his magic at the stove.

If you’ve never tried Chinese long beans, introduce yourself to their perfect preparation – pale ale battered and served with creamy lemon caper aioli and a light tomato sauce. The tempura style batter is light-textured and crunchy, which helps the sweet flavor of the long beans shine through.

Another tasty appetizer is the wonton roll stuffed with chicken, avocado, or-ganic spinach and served with Hoisin plum sauce. The combination of flavors and textures made these a favorite at our table.

The traditional wedge salad reaches new heights with a modernized tower of romaine hearts and thick slices of beefsteak tomato sprinkled with Maytag blue cheese and drizzled with house-made ranch dressing. As entrées go, Bistro 311’s pan-seared halibut is a keeper – perched over two polenta cakes and creamy corn chowder – an irresistible combination of flavors.

George’s favorite is the Rib Eye steak with blue cheese pommes frites (home-made steak sauce and sautéed asparagus accompany this generous 16oz beau-ty) and the ginger-soy braised short ribs come highly recommended as well.

For dessert we enjoyed the house made three-layer pineapple cake, which was adorned with vanilla ice cream and fresh raspberries during our visit.

If you’re in the mood for some fresh air, the patio area is a nice place to unwind and chat with friends, or for a bird’s eye view of the open kitchen, pull up a chair indoors. Bistro 311 serves up high quality dishes and proves itself as a stand out restaurant devoted to organic produce, natural meats and cutting edge preparations.
