You’ve made your New Year’s resolution to get back in shape. Now’s the time to kick start a plan of action for 2015... me included. It didn’t take more than a recent mile run to realize that my once unlimited endurance no longer endures. It became a glaring reality when my 9-year-old son and I walked in the Laguna Niguel Holiday Parade last month with some of the parents and children from his school. At the

conclusion of the route, we were pressed to make the start of his basketball game that immediately followed. As one of the coaches of the team, I felt an additional responsibility to get to the gym as quickly as possible so we decided to sprint the mile back to the car. My son thought it was great; cruising down the center of the blocked off and barren Crown Valley Parkway, we felt like early starters at the Los Angeles Marathon. About a half-mile in, the experience lost its appeal as my son continuously harped at his dad to pick up the pace. I couldn't...and my calves paid the price for the next 3 days.

Fortunately for all of you who are eager to find your former shape and improve the way you feel, our “Get Lean in 2015” fitness section offers plenty of avenues to get you closer to your goals. For our local parents who are focused on maximizing the educational opportunities for their children in the new year, check out our “Education Spotlight” for a multitude of schools, and instructional services for just the right fit.

This month’s cover features pure. love. yoga in San Clemente. Learn about Owner Angela Treaster’s inspirational vision to intertwine yoga, art and the community. Her studio’s dedication to sustainability, service, and the collaboration of people is evident in everything from the unique classes available to its partnerships with local charitable organizations.

Thanks for reading The Local DISH Magazine and we wish you a happy and healthy New Year!

San Clemente(949) 492-5048

PureLoveYogaSC.com

There's a new yoga studio in town and it's changing the game on how yoga stu-dios operate. San Clemente welcomes pure. love. yoga., a studio dedicated to com-munity, sustainability, service, and collabora-tion. Owner Angela Treaster purchased the former Pure Yoga with the vision of creating an authentic, accessible community. The busi-ness model is like nothing you'll see in Orange County, with the studio functioning similarly to a co-op. Angela has gathered a team of well-regarded professionals to fulfill her vi-sion, including Creative Director Laura Love, Seva Director Jamie Hanson, Retail Director Andrea Delancallotti, Media Director Marjo-rie Woodbridge and Student Advisor Golden Traut. Angela shared her thoughts on her unique business model, "My late husband, Ken, who was a very successful business man, always told me that you hire the people who

are at the very best at what they do, and then you give them the freedom to do it. Ken was my inspiration for creating this space and his love for life, people, and following one's pas-sion is undoubtedly felt in the studio. He is the 'love' in pure. love. yoga."

At pure. love. yoga., practicing asana is merely the beginning of your journey. This is not to say that the physical practice of yoga is unim-portant at pure. love. yoga. The studio is home to some of the most sought after, knowledge-able yoga instructors in Orange County and it offers much more than chaturangas and downward facing dogs. The studio includes community members on many levels — from selling merchandise crafted by local artists to facilitating potlucks and neighborhood events. Pure. love. yoga. is all about people and every Saturday night it holds a live music yoga class

spotlighting local musicians and the pool of remarkable talent available in south Orange County. This class has quickly become one of the most popular classes on the schedule.

In November, pure. love. yoga. partnered with CB CycleBarn in its 1st annual “Yoga-Tri-Give-A-Thon," a fundraising event incorporating in- door cycling, running, and yoga. 100% of the proceeds benefited With My Own Two Hands Foundation, a local non-profit orga-nization established by one of the studio's instructors, Lindsey Pluimer. This foundation has built an orphanage in Africa and is cur-rently working on constructing a new school for underprivileged children. The successful, sold-out Yoga-Tri-Give-A-Thon went beyond raising funds for a worthy cause, it connected the community of San Clemente on a deeper level, demonstrating that together, we can make a difference.

In December pure. love. yoga. hosted a Lo-cal Artist Faire & Holiday Party, an evening designed to support local art and encour-age students to mix, mingle, and shop more consciously for the holidays. The event was well-attended by students, friends and fami-lies and featured over 25 local vendors, live music, dancing.

Another core value of pure. love. yoga. is to be environmentally conscious. The studio only sells beverages in glass containers, has replaced paper towels with cloth ones in re-strooms, utilizes 100% recycled paper for all printed materials and has moved toward pa-perless solutions for business operations. The studio also has a retail section that offers a vari-ety of organic, eco-friendly, and local products and apparel.

Seva (sanskrit for "selfless service") is also a value of pure. love. yoga. The studio holds a donation-based class every Sunday afternoon and 100% of all proceeds go to a local non-profit. This quarter, the studio is supporting With My Own Two Hands Foundation. "Our intention is to create something truly au-thentic, collaborative and accessible to all...where the physical practice of yoga is just one layer," shares Creative Director, Laura Love. "Pure. love. yoga. is making yoga accessible to all students, from beginners to advanced practitioners and beyond."

"Angela, the new owner of pure. love. yoga. is one of the best people around. Her solar personality, alone, makes your day. I've been practicing yoga for several years now and have never attended a studio that feels like 'home' to me. They have succeeded in creating a community of yogis that are warm and genuine. The new classes, a stylishly renovated studio with lots of light, and the new

teachers have invigorated my love for yoga. Change is good!" —J. Thomas

offers each student differentiated opportuni-ties to explore, investigate, and demonstrate understanding by means of a hands-on ap-proach to learning that includes integrated technology. By complementing the academic rigor with the offering of innovative electives, the OLF faith-filled student gains a love for life-long learning, becomes an effective com-municator and a globally responsible citizen. Students have received local and regional awards from various competitions such as the OC Science Fair, Chapman University Holo-caust Art, Writing, Poetry, and Film Contest, Jr. High Academic Decathlon, Catholic Math League, OC Catholic Charities Contest, and the OC Young Author’s Faire.

OLF’s Early Education Center has been en-hanced by the addition of a transitional kinder-garten; the first year of a two-year academic kindergarten program that is specifically de-signed to give four-year-olds and young fives the “gift of time” to develop socially, emotion-ally, and cognitively.

Sixteen-year-old filmmaker Joshua Ovalle was winning all kinds of awards for his work. But at his local high school, he struggled tre-mendously. Josh suffers from attention defi-cit disorder (ADD). While he has great aspi-rations, he was, as he puts it, “lost in school.” Now, after less than a year at Halstrom Acad-emy, everything is different.

“I’m proud of my GPA,” says Josh. “I have completely turned my grades around. I’m learning things better now... quicker; I’m getting A’s, and I’m more confident about everything. Also, my mind can’t wander off, as much as it may want to. Before Halstrom, I felt that getting into a high caliber Univer-sity was not going to happen, but now, that’s definitely a possibility.”

Flexible class scheduling is also an enor-mous benefit to many Halstrom students, including Josh, who puts a lot of energy into

his filmmaking. “In order to do a decent production, it takes a lot of time to put together a script, a storyboard, set up a production schedule, arrange a crew and cast, shoot, and then edit. The great thing about Halstrom is that I can customize my schedule which opens up time for me. I was able to complete my last short film while taking summer school. The flexibility of scheduling has also made it possible for me to go to film festivals I’ve been invited to attend in New York and Los Angeles,” says Josh.

“I think sometimes parents accept the tra-ditional school model even when their kids aren’t doing well in school because they don’t know there are other options,” says Josh’s father, Wernher. “Parents shouldn’t accept having a ‘C’ student because the traditional school system can’t meet their needs. Parents need to know there are

alternatives that are designed to help kids suc-ceed. Halstrom Academy is one of those great alternatives.”

Temple Beth El’s acclaimed Early Childhood Center has been enlightening children for 14 il-lustrious years. The school has forged a strong reputation within the local community for its loving, experienced and long-term staff who instruct in both their Center and in their Full In-clusion Program.

With a planned average of only 110 children per school year, Temple Beth El is able to main-tain its exceptional hands-on approach to the “early education” years of child development. Temple Beth El offers a multitude of classes in-cluding a Parent Participation Program (Mom & Me) for 7 months – 2 years, preschool for 2 and 3-year-olds, a Pre-K program as well as a full-day Kindergarten.

Each year, Temple Beth El has been able to provide children with varying special needs in a traditional classroom setting. For example, a child in need of a support facilitator would be welcomed and immersed in the program.

The faculty regularly meets with school pre-paredness coordinators within the commu-nity, so that they are aware and up-to-date on the skills each child needs to success-fully transcend to their formal elementary school or other educational program.

Temple Beth El’s philosophy uses devel-opmentally-appropriate curriculum with academics being taught through active participation. Pre-K students prepare for Kindergarten by utilizing the “Ready for School/Handwriting Without Tears” course. Temple Beth El has been success-ful with this fun, experiential syllabus for this age group.

The Temple Beth El facility is clean, bright and cheerful and has large, playground-facing windows in each room. The school goes the extra mile to help create not just a vivid and cheerful atmosphere, but a splendid learning environment.

Grace Classical Academy is Orange Coun-ty’s first classical Christian school. Founded in 2003, Grace Classical Academy is an inviting, family-oriented school centrally located in Laguna Niguel serving students and their parents in Kindergarten through 8th Grade.

Students are mentored by well-trained faculty in classes averaging ten students in size using time-tested curricula and research-based teaching methods for the purpose of:

• Teaching the foundational facts of each subject;

• Developing logical thinking patterns; • Understanding the interrelationships

among ideas; • Generating original ideas based on this

understanding; and • Articulating original ideas using reasoned,

meaningful, and beautiful language.

The ultimate goal is to train students to use these skills for the glory of God and in service to hu-mankind as productive members of their com-munities.

Grace Classical Academy offers a wide range of courses such as phonics-based reading in the early grades, and, throughout all grades, Math-ematics, Science, literature-based history, Bible, English Grammar, Latin, P.E., Art, and Music.

From an early age, special emphasis is placed on mathematics instruction using methods de-veloped in Singapore that teaches students the concrete and abstract nature of numbers and real-life problem solving. Additionally, instruction in English Grammar begins in 1st Grade helping students in developmentally-appropriate ways engage with the structure of their own language. Both approaches to the study of math and lan-guage provide the foundation for the develop-ment of logical thinking that undergirds the study of the other disciplines.

At Mathnasium Learning Centers, math makes sense! Whether your child started out far behind or is already ahead in math, Mathnasium helps students advance because they know that any child can be successful in math—it’s a matter of teaching it in a way that makes sense to them.

Experienced math tutors utilize proprietary teaching materials and techniques, The Math-nasium Method™, to deliver a customized learning plan designed to address each stu-dent’s needs. This instructional approach goes beyond traditional math tutoring to develop an understanding and build a love for math.

If math is a problem, Mathnasium can solve it. Students will grow more excited and confident about math—and their grades will reflect that.

For students who already excel in math, the sky’s the limit. Mathnasium’s instructors will work to expand your child’s math skills. When learning math is made exciting, students will discover all the doors that will open by being proficient in math.

Students engage one-to-one with their instruc-tors in a unique combination of mental, verbal,

Basic math concepts and skills are blended with a program specifically designed to help students build number sense. This special program shows them how and why the useful number rules they’re learning work so they are able to understand how they can be ap-plied to interesting areas such as computer science, biology, and psychology.

Students are evaluated with a written and verbal assessment unique to Mathnasium. Based on the results, they develop a cus-tom-tailored program designed to close any educational gaps they may have so they can jump ahead when they’re ready for advanced math challenges.

Mathnasium builds upon your child’s exist-ing foundation and focuses on explaining why mathematical rules work so that children learn and understand the rules, not just mem-orize them.

Instructors also help students understand their homework as part of each session and prepare them for school tests, as well as standardized tests such as the California High School Exit Exam, SAT, ACT and ISEE.

By giving your child a firm foundation—and confidence—in math, Mathnasium can unlock the potential for continued educational suc-cess in the future.

JULIE A. DAVIS, MA, PsyDLicensed Clinical Psychologist #24689

ASK DR. JULIE?

Q: How do I know if my partner is cheating?

A: ASK THEM! If you suspect your partner has been unfaithful you need to discuss your concerns openly. “I have felt like we haven’t been as connected lately, is there something bothering you that you would like to discuss?”

Common red flags when a partner is cheating – ask questions if you have concerns... but don’t accuse:

1. I have noticed you are working later than normal?

2. You seem to take calls more often in private who are you talking to?

3. Your appearance, hair, clothes etc. has significantly improved lately why the sudden change?

4. You haven’t been interested in intimacy with me is there a reason?

5. Are you dissatisfied with me? You said “you should join a gym and lose some weight” (critical in anyway).

6. What else seems abnormal…?

Both men and woman often have a difficult time telling their partners they are unhappy. If something seems wrong ask

them, seek professional help to get your relationship back on track don’t ignore your problems, they won’t go away and

likely will get worse. —Dr. Julie A. Davis

Do you have heavy, achy, itchy or restless legs at the end of the day? Do you see bulging, unsightly veins across your legs or feet? LOCALWELLNESS

Our excuses are behind us (literally). The calendar has turned over. There are no more tempting holiday or parties on the horizon. The time is now to shape

up, get fit, and work out a path to a healthy lifestyle in 2015 and beyond.

With private and semi-private classes 7 days a week, Bella Pilates offers something for everyone, including children with special needs, seniors, high-level athletes and those in and out of shape. Bella Pilates provides individual, modified and safe workouts that will leave you energized, limber and lean. Pilates benefits those seeking injury rehabilitation to those wanting overall im-proved health and quality of life. Get started in January with $99 per month unlimited group reformer classes or a 1-hour free private session for new clients. Call 949.388.2747 for more information. (see p. 44)

CB CycleBarn® offers inspirational in-structors, great music, data tracking, a variety of classes, and a staff dedicated to customer care. Classes at TheBarn are fun, safe, and effective non-impact cardio for all ages and fitness levels, in-cluding teens and seniors. Signing up is easy and saves time because there’s no

waiting to get a bike. TheBarn's BookYourBike reservation system allows you to choose your bike in advance and makes every rider feel like a VIP. Pay per class or monthly. Special packages are available for high school students and non-peak class times. Everyone’s first five classes are free with a local ID. New clients can take advantage of one free month when signing up for a monthly contract in January. Register and check out the class schedule online at cbcyclebarn.com or call 949.481.5438. (see p. 43)

Jazzercise is the original dance exercise phenomenon! Each 60-minute cardio workout routine blends dance and muscle toning movements choreographed to to-day's hottest music, including Top 40, jazz, country, funk, and classics. The instructors make all the routines fun and easy-to-fol-low. Every class includes a gentle warm up and 30-minute aerobic workout. You can even get a jumpstart by learning the moves online at www.jazzercise.com. Start for $0 in January at the beautiful studio at the OC Sailing & Events Center in Dana Point Harbor next to Baby Beach. Call Nancy at 949.492.7817 for more info. (see p. 44)

Orange Theory Fitness is group personal training at its best. It combines heart rate based, high-intensity interval training (HIIT) with resistance training for a complete, full-body workout in one hour. The professionally coached and expertly created workout templates take the guesswork out of getting stronger, more fit, and burning more calories. Although the workout changes daily, it is the same throughout each day so that you can take any of the many classes according to your schedule. Orange Theory Fitness has combined known, proven techniques in such a way to get the most out of an hour. Each member has their own heart rate monitor and their efforts are based on the 5 heart rate zones. It also targets specific amounts of times in each zone to induce EPOC, a biological state in which your body will increase calorie burn for up to 36 hours after the workout. (see p. 43)

San Clemente’s Anytime Fitness represents a high-concept twist on a boutique gym. Owners Steve and Peggy have created an intimate, non-intimidating studio/gym environment that offers the maximum convenience and flexibility for members, while taking advantage of the resources of a larger national organization. Anytime Fitness-San Clemente employs personal trainers who are degreed professional coaches in strength and conditioning. Each coach is certified in TRX Suspension, kettle bell training, nutrition, and possesses the knowledge to provide effective results. Affordable private and semi-pri-vate group training, complimentary educational workshops, and Precision Nutrition counseling will also keep you motivated and on track. Stop by the gym or call 949.276.8888 to learn more and to see why Anytime Fitness is “not your average typical gym.” (see p. 42)

SEASONAL, SUSTAINABLE FARE AT A MODERN STEAKHOUSE

enoSTEAK

enoSTEAKLocated at The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel

1 Ritz Carlton Drive, Dana Point • 949.240.2000enoSTEAK.com

For steak and wine lovers, there’s no better way to kick off 2015 than with a visit to enoSTEAK, a chic steakhouse located at The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Ni-guel. The intimate space features a floor-to-ceiling glass tower in the center of the restaurant, showcas-ing approximately 375 bottles of wine, along with several hundred others lining the back wall.

Executive Chef Pedro Contreras’s modern steakhouse menu focuses on sea-sonal fare and locally sourced ingredients, including prime beef from local farms committed to raising the highest quality breeds. Appetizers such as a fresh crab and avocado salad, or the asparagus Iberico salad with poached egg, Iberico ham, and caviar crème fraîche make outstanding starters to your meal.

As for an entrée, you’ll have a difficult time selecting from one of the many mouthwatering, handcrafted meats and seafood dishes that will certainly tempt your taste buds. All of enoSTEAK’s beef is served with house-made sig-nature compound butters to put the proverbial cherry on top. I favored the black truffle butter to complement my outstanding 9-ounce grass-fed beef tenderloin, while my dining companion raved about the Point Reyes blue cheese butter. Sustainable seafood options include a 9-ounce pan-seared sea bass and a butter-poached lobster. To accompany your entrée, enoSTEAK of-fers several “enhancements,” including the Toma White Cheddar Truffle Mac and Cheese, American wagyu fat steak fries, and sautéed organic mushrooms in a sherry cream, among others.

Diners seeking a sweet ending to their meal will be pleased to learn that the restaurant’s decadent desserts change every few weeks. The ultra-popular chocolate bread pudding—with a warm molten center—is a highly recom-mended offering that will properly cap off your main course.

Service at enoSTEAK is top-notch—friendly and attentive, without being intru-sive. The overall dining experience is worthy of the five-star resort, although you don’t need to be a hotel guest to indulge. For epicureans seeking superb food and wine in a contemporary, elegant setting, enoSTEAK delivers on all levels. Bon Appetit!
