By the time this edition of The Local DISH Magazine arrives in your mailbox, I will have hopefully recovered from my annual Turkey Bowl football game. Muscles will throb. Hamstrings will ache. And standing from a seated po-sition will be a significant accomplish-ment. Yes, the ol’ body’s not what it used to be, but each year I’m somehow compelled to play a mere 2 hours of “flag” football which inevitably results in days of grueling pain...just in time to dig out the holiday decorations and hang lights.
December is chock full of fun for the entire family. Visits with Jolly Old St. Nick, tree lighting ceremonies, gift ex-changes, the Dana Point Boat Parade, the Sawdust Festival’s Winter Fantasy and holiday home tours are just some of what is happening locally this month. Sneak a peek at our calendar and holi-day event guide for details.
This season, I’d like to encourage your continued support of local retailers and businesses. Every dollar spent in our community has a long-lasting, positive effect. Please take the time to shop lo-cally throughout the holidays whenever possible.
Our cover this month features the fam-ily-operated and community-oriented Capistrano Toyota. Their annual Toyo-tathon kicks off on December 1st, so now’s the time to splurge on yourself or that special someone with a shiny new car or truck.
On behalf of all the staff at The Local DISH Magazine, Season’s Greetings and happy 2011!

She has managed and designed several company events that continue to be topics of discussion on six continents… I can safely say no one can hold a candle to the work she does.” —Edwin FullEr, President / Managing director of Marriott international
interior DesignKnown internationally for her work with high-profile clients and upscale homes, Newman warmly embraces projects of any size and budget. “Our interior design business is very invigorating and doing quite well. We’ve designed for some wonderful people who value their homes and desire to live in an environment conducive to their lifestyle,” said Newman. Commercial interior design is a growing part of the business. “Many businesses are looking to create more peaceful and serene work environments for their staff, believing that a calm, creative environment helps productivity and provides a sense of pride in the workplace.”

A Touch of Elegance in historic San Juan Capistrano is an emporium of nostalgic collectibles along with decorative accessories, furniture, florals and gifts. The quaint boutique offers everything from wonderfully scented candles to hand-carved, reclaimed-teak coffee tables imported from Indonesia.
Designer and owner Christy Newman shops around the world looking for unique pieces to complement the store and meet her customers’ decorating needs. “I find artisans and pieces that will work with the taste of our clientele,” says Newman, who’s been in the business for over 28 years.
Although large pieces are the foundation of the shop, eclectic lamps, sconces, pillows and accessories are thoughtfully layered throughout. A collection of bejeweled crosses framed as art, funky monkey lamps that make you smile in amusement and a wooden woman whose legs hang off a shelf as she watches the room are just a few of the pieces that stand out amongst the many treasures.
A Touch of Elegance brings nature to interior design through the use of custom floral elements. Their arrangements feature exquisite artificial flowers and plants, from desert succulents to lush tropical bouquets.

Capistrano Toyota’s Roger Hogan has earned his stripes in the car business and has seen auto trends come and go. He started with Toyota in 1976—just in time for the “black Celica craze” that hit streets the following year. His dedication and hard work earned him his own dealership in the early 90’s, which he twice expanded. After more
than three decades and an unbroken string of success-es, he has returned to Orange Coun-ty to give back to the community and share his good for-tune with his family.
Since taking over operations in San Juan Capistrano two years ago, Ho-gan has dug in his heels and made a significant com-mitment to the local community. Capo Toyota has sponsored car give- aways for Trabuco Hills High School, The Ocean Insti-tute, Children’s Hos-pital of Orange County and Capist-rano Unified School District, to name
only a few. This generosity has helped generate hundreds of thousands of dollars for these organ-izations and Hogan says he’s only just beginning.
Roger Hogan’s three sons help keep it all in the family. Roger, Jr. is currently the General Sales Manager at the San Juan Capistrano dealership. Steven is the General Manager of the flagship lo-cation in Claremont and youngest son Kyle (a 2004 graduate of Laguna Beach High School and recent Pepperdine alum) is the Pre-Owned Car Director. Roger, Sr. has fond memories of coaching youth sports and high school basketball and he consid-ers his business relationship with his sons an exten-sion of that camaraderie.
As the consummate family man, Roger has also managed to incorporate his grandson in to the family business. Hogan has featured his image on everything from license plate frames to marketing materials to the two-story inflatable mascot that sits at the front of the dealership. Out of his pride as a grandfather, the company tagline, “Oh Baby!” was born.
Capistrano Toyota’s best-selling model is the high-performance Prius hybrid. Hogan asserts, “The Pri-us defines San Juan Capistrano right now. This community is youth-oriented and environmental-ly aware.” Considering that South OC is also home to tens of thousands of commuters driving north to Irvine and beyond or south to San Diego, the Pri-us just makes good economic sense. In fact, the Prius outsells the Camry by 500% at Capo Toyo-ta, bucking the nationwide trend that has kept the Camry in the top spot year after year. Hogan’s en-
thusiasm about the model shines through. He’s not only a proud Prius driver, but he’s also eager to un-veil the new line of Priuses in 2011, which will in-clude a four-door model, a full-electric model and a wagon version.
Toyota has proven to be the clear leader in hybrid technology and will celebrate ten years on top in 2011. With the current Prius model averaging fifty miles per gallon and the electric model expected to perform at up to 140 miles on a single charge, the competition is left at the starting line. Capo Toyota has mechanics on staff who are specially certified to service hybrids—a must for this ever-advancing technology. The service department is stacked with friendly, knowledgeable staff who are the best in the business. The department servic-es all models of Toyota, Scion and Lexus vehicles.
With customer-friendly perks like complimenta-ry lifetime oil changes with the purchase of a new vehicle and time savers like online finance appli-cations and service appointments, the car-buying experience couldn’t be easier. Toyo-tathon’s Decem-ber offers just sweeten the deal. See for yourself why “great deals are born here every day!”

Question: Why do I always feel so tired and down during the holidays? —Dawn, san Juan capistrano
ross meDical: The holidays are a wonderful time of year, but they can also be an extra stressful time of the year as well. This is the time of year when we prepare to celebrate our respective holidays with our families. It is also a particularly busy time of year due to such preparations and we do not get as much rest as our bodies normally require. But along with the holiday stress, there could also be a medical condition called seasonal affective disorder that is causing your symptoms. Seasonal affective disorder is experienced by many people and is due to the decrease in the amount of sunlight during the winter months. Usually, people experience fatigue and a depressed mood from November through February or March. Then during spring with the increase in the amount of sunlight, the symptoms will resolve. If a person has this clinical condition, there are a few different options of treatment. It is highly recommended that if you are experiencing these symptoms, that you go and have an evaluation by your healthcare provider. They have the necessary screening tools to evaluate if you do have seasonal affective disorder and can offer a few options on treatment. —monica geda, Do

Raul Malo will perform at the Coach House Friday, December 10th. Malo was frontman and songwriter for the platinum-selling, Grammy Award-winning alt-country band The Mavericks and also a member of the supergroup Los Super Seven. With Mavericks’ hits like “All You Ever Do is Bring Me Down,” “Here Comes the Rain” and “What a Crying Shame” and solo albums like Today, You’re Only Lonely and Lucky One, Malo will also be performing cuts from his brand new, self-produced album Sinners & Saints.
I recently spoke with Malo about his music, the lessons he learned from the Nashville flood and his upcoming Coach House gig.
The beautiful new album Sinners & Saints seems so intensely personal. how did it come about?“It evolved from the encouragement producer Steve Berlin (Los Lobos) gave me while working on my album Lucky One. I had a renewed confidence in my songwriting so I continued writing, experimenting, engineering until I had a collection of songs that started to take on my personality, my opinions, my point of view. This is the best representation of me at a particular moment in time. It’s honest, flaws and all. That’s kind of the point of art!”
Can you share your thoughts on your time with The Mavericks and why you left?“I’m proud of the records we made but it did become like milking the same cow. It had run its course and I wanted to be more creative, not just make music to continue the gravy train. It’s more important to me to do good work that’s musically enriching.”
This year’s nashville floods destroyed your home, your studio and your vintage instruments. how have you coped?“It’s been very hard on the kids es-pecially, but I try to stay positive and we’ve learned what’s really important and what you can do without.”
Final thoughts on the Coach house and your upcoming show there?“It’s my kind of place; a hidden treasure that’s one of my favorites because the people are true music fans and the room always seems to sound great. See you there!”www.raulmalo.com

ichibiriIchibiri is hardly the new kid on the block when it comes to South County restaurants. For over 25 years, they’ve been delighting locals with some of the finest Japanese teppan and sushi in the area.
Featuring teppanyaki cooking, which literally translates as “iron plate cooking,” Ichibiri’s chefs have clearly mastered this artful and playful preparation by incorporating skillful technique and a dash of comedy to create an entertaining and delicious dining experience. Patrons at the teppan grill, especially
the younger set, can’t help but be amazed by each chef’s repertoire of stunts: from spinning, tossing and catching various bottles and utensils to fashioning smoking volcanoes out of stacked onion rings or sculpting the likeness of Mickey Mouse from mounds of fried rice. The fact that I can also maintain an uninterrupted conversation with my husband while my 5-year old is mesmerized by the chef’s antics is the proverbial cherry on top!
After the “show” concludes, you’ll be met with a generous portion of rice, yakisoba noodles, tasty vegetables and your choice of filet mignon, teriyaki chicken, scallops, halibut or other protein to dip into a selection of tasty sauces. Pair it with saki or a Sapporo and you’re all set for a great meal.
Also in Ichibiri’s bag of tricks is a tasty array of sushi and sashimi that can be enjoyed at the sushi bar, teppan grill or at a private table. Ichibiri works diligently with local suppliers to assure their customers receive only the freshest fish and ingredients and their sushi chefs echo this attention to detail by preparing your personal favorites, even if they’re not on the menu.
No matter where you reside in South Orange County, you’re not far from one of Ichibiri’s convenient locations in Dana Point, San Clemente or Laguna Niguel. Whether you’re an old fan or a new friend, visit them for lunch, dinner and a great time!
