Using Your Access FOBAll perimeter doors are locked 24/7 with the exception of the Front Door which will now be

locked at 11:00 p.m. and reopened at 7:00 a.m. To enter a locked door with an access pad, place or wave your FOB (which you were issued upon move-in) in front of the black box at the bottom of the silver panel. If you do not have your FOB, or if

your FOB does not work, press the green call bell button. This will call the Operator

Good nutrition starts with YOU and your food choices at the table as well as in the grocery store. Making the right choices in either setting can some-times be a confusing prospect. Grocery stores use strategic marketing strategies to creatively market their products and even have tricks to the method in which they stock their products. Grocery stores use the eye-level shelves to place leading sellers and most of the time, the unhealthy choices.

At times, we get caught into these marketing “traps” and make poor nutritional choices. Some tips to help you succeed in making healthy choices at the supermarket include:

• Shop the Perimeter. A tip to remember is the shorter the shelf-life, the healthier the products. Those foods contain less preservatives and added chemicals. Most of the products, such as your meats, produce and dairy require refrigeration and have the shortest time on the shelf. On the inside of the store, the aisles contain mostly processed, unhealthy food choices.

• Plan Ahead. Going to the store with a list, will make you more efficient with your time and budget in the store. If you have a plan with you, you are more likely to stay on track and buy more of what you need, not want.

• Limit Empty Calories. Some of the American fa-vorite foods, such as ice cream, pizza, cakes, and sodas contain empty calories. Empty calories are solid fats and foods that may taste good, but do not provide nutrients for the body, causing you to be hungry shortly after consumption.

• Shop on a Full Stomach. Eating before you shop may eliminate the need to fill your cart with foods you are carving at the time. Eat a healthy snack prior to your shopping trip. It will help you em-brace your healthy mind-set and prepare you for success in the supermarket.

Poor nutrition can impair our daily health and wellbeing and reduce our ability to lead an enjoyable and active life. It can also contribute to the negative effects of conditions such as osteoporosis, high blood pressure, obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and high cholesterol levels. It’s important to be educated and knowledgeable to maintain a healthy lifestyle and to make the right choices. With proper preparation and a healthy mind-set, you can navigate your nutritional choices with ease.

Bottled Water AvailableAs a reminder, gallon jugs of water are available

for purchase at The Village Creamery. This should be particularly helpful during hurricane season for those of you who find it difficult to bring gallons of water home from the local grocery stores. However, due to storage limitations in the Creamery, we will only be able to maintain a day-to-day supply. There-fore, if you are depending upon purchasing water for use in the event of a hurricane, it is necessary that you stock-up before a hurricane is eminent.

Life story writing is an excellent way to build community with other Residents. Benefits of writing in

a structured class include the guidance of a writ-ing prompt, the coaching of a trained facilitator, the enjoyment of hearing the stories of others, and the power of writing and sharing one’s own story to a listening audience.

You may choose to start with tiny vignettes of a few sentences in regards to genealogical and family life stories—circumstances of birth, favorite toys, stories about siblings and grandparents or you may wish to use some thought provoking questions to get you started with topics such as:

• Brief encounters• Inventions• Children and the things they say• Accomplishments in which you

are the most proud• Where you were on important days in historyThe thought of writing a life retrospective can

daunt even the most experienced writer; however, writing in groups decrease isolation, reawaken dor-mant interests, offer purposeful activity, and hone cognitive skills. Marianne Soviero, a freelance writer, will be here to introduce a writing class on Monday, August 15, at 2:00 p.m. in the Hobby Room. This class will be limited to 20 participants. If inter-ested, please call Ellen at ext. 1743.

Tampa Bay Automobile Museum and Café Vienna

Join us for a tour of the Tampa Bay Automobile Museum on Wednesday, August 24.

The Tampa Bay Auto-mobile Museum opened to the public on March 19, 2005, and is located in Pinellas Park. The museum is adjacent to their parent company, Polypack, a manu-facturer of automatic packaging machinery. The owner of Polypack and the collection housed by the museum is Alain Cerf.

Mr. Cerf was born in France and bought his first vintage car out of necessity in the 1950’s when a car such as a Talbot, Delahaye or Darl’mat was less expensive than a modern “people’s car”. He loved those classics and one after another, after good service, they were garaged, waiting for better years. Tatra cars from Czechoslovakia became another interest. He was intrigued by technology and styling that could almost have come from outer space. The idea of a collection based upon avant-garde automo-bile technology grew stronger every day.

Enjoy the collection at the Tampa Bay Automo-bile Museum while discovering the great engineers who designed and built these innovative cars. Fea-

tured automobiles include Tracta, Citroën, Panhard, and Voisin

(France); Tatra and Aero (Czechoslovakia); DKW, Auto Union, and Mercedes (Ger-many); Alvis, Allard, and BSA (England); DeLorean (Ireland);

and Willys Knight and Ruxton (USA). A special feature at the museum is the world’s only replica of the French 1770 Fardier de Cugnot, the world’s first self-propelled vehicle. This vehicle is on loan from the Deutsche Bahn Museum in Nuremberg, Germany.

After our tour we will head to Café Vienna, a restaurant in St. Petersburg featuring German and Austrian cuisine for lunch “on your own”. The admission price for the automobile museum is $5 per person. If interested, please sign up and pay in the Administration Office. The Village bus will leave promptly at 9:45 a.m. for our 11:00 a.m. tour.

Beginner Step ClassInterested in learning the

basic steps in line dancing? Residents who are inter-ested in learning the basic line dancing steps are being offered a beginner step

Resident Katherine Hall will be the instruc-tor. Kathryn will start off slow—you don’t have to be a dancer to participate. Everyone is welcome!

Once you have the basic steps down, join us at Dance! Dance! Dance! with Kathryn (experienced dancers) where you work on doing the actual dances using the steps learned in the Step It Up class. Come Step It Up and learn the line dancing steps!

Dear Grandson,I have become a little older since I saw

you last and a few changes have come into my life since then. Frankly, I have become quite a frivolous old gal. I am seeing five gentlemen every day.

As soon as I wake up, Will Power helps me get out of bed.

Then I go to see John. Then Charlie Horse comes along and when

he is here he takes a lot of my time and at-tention. When he leaves, Arthur Ritis shows up and stays the rest of the day. He doesn’t like to stay in one place very long so he takes me from joint to joint.

After such a busy day I’m really tired and glad to go to bed with Ben Gay. What a life!
