Winter Service

The winter season is a time of sharing and caring, especially for those of us here at Gloucester High. Ms. Light, Friends of Rachel Helping Hands advisor, and Ms. Egerton, NHS advisor, helped kick off these kindness acts with the help of Ms. Hadley, a special education teacher at Cold Springs. Ms. Hadley represents Hometown Missions, a non-profit organization through which the students and staff are able to serve those less fortunate. These wonderful women gather a group of students together to take on the city of Philadelphia with hot food, sandwiches, and winter necessities for the homeless. For one day we get to put our worries aside and focus on what truly matters in life, lending a hand to those in need. In life it is easy and natural to get distracted and lose sight of what’s important. During the winter, Ms. Light and Ms. Hadley try to take GHS students monthly to experience this wonderful act of giving. It is always a success. Typically with a big turnout, thanks to the many generous donations and contributions from everyone involved.

For the first time since 1992, the Southern red state Alabama elected a Democratic Senator in a tight race glistening with controversy. Democrats are so rare in Alabama that the last Democratic Senator in 1992 switched parties so that he would have a better chance of another reelection in Alabama. In this 2017 election for Alabama Senate, Republican candidate Roy Moore was facing numerous accusations of sexual misconduct with minors. This disruption in Moore’s campaign allowed Jones to have a greater influence on Alabama than Moore did in the end.

Despite the numerous allegations against Moore, 650,000 Alabamians still voted for him. This extremely close race displays the loyalty many Alabama citizens have with the Republican Party. The citizens of the “Yellowhammer State” would rather vote for an alleged pedophile than a Democrat. Another possible contributing factor to Alabama almost electing Roy Moore was President Trump’s outspoken support for the Republican candidate. Trump won Alabama in his recent presidential election with 62% of Alabama voters, so Trump’s influence on Alabama was powerful.

Besides the allegations and overall disgust with Moore in the media, one factor would ultimately give Democrat candidate Doug Jones the edge he needed. This factor was the African American voters in Alabama, especially black female voters. Ninety-eight percent of all black female voters and ninety-three percent of black male voters voted for Jones, which equaled roughly a third of all voters. After losing to Democrat Doug Jones, Roy Moore refused to accept defeat, stating that he will be back to stir up the electorate yet again. Roy Moore requested a recount but was denied because the margin of his loss was not lower than .5%. Doug Jones’ victory will certainly shake up the Senate and Alabama for the next two years.

Broomball Tournament By: Rick Gaskill

Just as with Tug o War in October, for the first time ever, there was a Class

Broomball Competition held this past December. The classes played broomball to

determine who was the most athletic class. The Seniors played the Juniors and it came

to a shootout. The shootout was an intense battle of wills between goalies Royce

Gaudet and Burlieght Trower. Almost every member of the team was unable to score

on each of the goalies. The school day came to a close and the shootout continued to

the Cragge Bowl the next week. The Juniors won which resulted in the Juniors

playing the Sophomores and the Juniors winning it all again. The Juniors won first,

the Sophomores got second, the Seniors got third and the freshman came in last. Also

at this pep rally Class Cub and Spirit King were crowned. Malik Aytch won Senior

honors. Other notable seniors were Frankie King, Matt McNutt, Justin Goins, and

Rob Cooper. Class Cub honors went to Chris Dolson, Derron Cooney, and AJ Parent.

Additionally, Tri County athletes were honored.

As most of us know, the Cragge Bowl is a major highlight in a senior’s year. It is an afternoon filled with screaming students in the stands, teachers and seniors filled with excitement, which pretty much summed up the pep rally. Being a tradition for years at Gloucester High, both students and teachers like to take it seriously and go all in. Every year it is always a challenge to defeat the teachers in hopes to be the one class that holds the title. Unfortunately, it has never been the case yet, but it is still fun for everyone to participate and have a good time. To everyone's entertainment, Cragge Bowl gives people the opportunity to display their creative and artistic abilities. Ranging from famous cartoons, to famous characters, all of the seniors enjoyed creating their t-shirts. It is special to see the teachers so involved and excited, too. It means a lot to the school. Cragge Bowl is a great time for students to show school spirit and pride and for the seniors to come together as one. I am sure everyone is looking forward to what the next class can bring to the table.

River Rats By: Nick Zingaro

The River Rats, Gloucester High School’s basketball fan student section, has been very active this year. After a long history of being the loudest student section, we have made a strong return this year and have impressed many GHS students, staff, and alumni. The River Rats of years past would wear blue t-shirts, and attempt to attend 5 games a year. This year, that’s not the case. This year, the squad decided to go all out. The Rats designed 2 shirts (whites and blues), got rally towels, made posters, signs, and even big heads of the players on the teams. T-shirts were sold to the student body and to staff members generating funds for the organization. The cost was low at $15 for both shirts after students in the club were able to seek out many sponsors for the club gear. The cheering squad attended a wrestling match this year as well to show they are proud of all of GHS’ teams. Some games this year have been tough, and others have been fantastic. All that matters though is that the River Rats are back, active, and are here to stay. With playoffs around the corner, you can expect 100 students dressed in blue, gold, and white yelling our butts off in support of our teams. Go Lions!

The GHS Swim Team is experiencing yet another fantastic season. With a loss of five seniors from the 2016-17 season, the students this year are improving every day, individually and as a team. New members are contributing greatly to the team this year while learning swimming techniques and forming bonds with other teammates. Senior members Colin Coultas and Evelyn Rodriguez use their experience and skills to contribute to the team. The unstoppable relay team of Matt McNutt, Magdalene Kain, Corey Gartland, and Thomas Billings helped bring big wins against Salem and Pitman. The team is continuing this season and keeping a positive mindset as they work hard to achieve their goals.

Wrestling By: Melanie Gumpper

Having high hopes following the success of last year’s season, the Gloucester Lions

wrestling team has done well to fulfill these expectations. The Lions’ overall record

being 10-3 and their divisional record being 2-0 as of our publication date. The Lions

wrestling team is working hard to earn another division championship after earning

their first last year. The wrestling team puts in the hard work to make our school

proud. With captains Josh Barrett, Carmen Cutuli, AJ Parent, and Matt Cruz helping

to lead the way it is no wonder this season has been so successful. It’s Seniors Josh

Barrett, Ryan Brown, Carmen Cutuli, Rick Gaskill, Noah Howey, Zac Miller, Jared

Morris, and Mike Williams’ last year stepping on the mat, so they’re trying to bring

the heat and make their last year memorable. With the rest of the season ahead of us,

we wish nothing but wins for our wrestlers here on out.

The season has been exciting thus far. Starting with the pep rally all the way up to the

numerous victories by all our winter sports teams, the squad is thrilled to have been

able to witness it all. The family is lead by their coach, Ms. Brandt; and composed of

Seniors: Domenika Burkhardt and Lauren Pierman; Juniors: Amber Smith, Christy

Levandowski, Barbara Kutz, and Kimberly Cutuli; and Sophomores: Alyssa Waters,

Grace Risley, Cianni Crain, and Rosemary Palmer.

Mega BOWL-ing By: Rebecca Wenner

Gloucester City High School’s Boys and Girls Bowling teams defeated the

Gloucester Catholic Rams 4-0. The boys high game came from Dylan Haubenstein

with a 466. The girls highest scorer was Sarah Bonney with a 400. The Bowling

Team has been working hard this year. While the season is coming to an end, each

bowler is constantly improving and increasing their averages. Sarah Bonney is the

leading scorer on the Girls Bowling Team, while Kollin Watermasyk, Jason Schrock,

and Ethan Carpenter consistently score high for the boys. Valuable players such as

Kacey Maldanado, Ava Burns, Maddie Levins, Emily Petrik, and Kayleena Ayusa

have really improved their averages and allowed the girls bowling team to win

multiple victories throughout the season. The last bowling match is on Monday, the

29th of January at Westbrook Lanes. The bowling team is thankful for anyone who

has come out to support them. GO LIONS!
