Read About the History of Jones County

Between late 1863 and mid-1864, an armed band of Confederate deserters battled Confederate cavalry in the Piney Woods

region of Jones County, Mississippi. Calling themselves the Knight Company after their captain, Newton Knight, they set up head-

quarters in the swamps of the Leaf River, where, legend has it, they declared the Free State of Jones.

The story of the Jones County rebellion is well known among Mississippians, and debate over whether the county actually

seceded from the state during the war has smoldered for more than a century. Adding further controversy to the legend is the

story of Newt Knight's interracial romance with his wartime accomplice, Rachel, a slave. From their relationship there developed a mixed-race com-

munity that endured long after the Civil War had ended, and the ambiguous racial identity of their descendants confounded the rules of segregated

Mississippi well into the 20th century. A maverick, unionist district in the heart of the Old South? A notorious county that seceded from the Confed-

eracy? This is how Jones County, Mississippi, is known in myth and legend. Since 1864 the legend has persisted. Differing versions give the name of

this new nation as Republic of Jones, Jones County Confederacy, and Free State of Jones.

Over the years this story has captured the imaginations of journalists, historians, essayists, novelists, short story writers, and Hollywood

filmmakers, although serious scholars long ago questioned the accuracy of local history accounts about a secessionist county led by

Newt Knight and a band of renegades.

Legend of the Free State of Jones was the first authoritative explanation of just what did happen in Jones County in 1864 to

give rise to the legend and now to a major motion picture starring Matthew McConaughey. This book surveys the facts, the records,

and the history of the “Free State of Jones” and may provide the whole story.

GENEALOGY

We have several new titles in our genealogy department you

need to come see.

With the explosion of DNA testing, I have purchased several

new publications on this subject. Genealogy: DNA and The Family Tree

by James Mayflower explains the amazing relationship between DNA

and inheritance.

In this book, you will also find out the essentials of genealogy

and how it can help you predict certain health ailments.

Another publication I am happy to add to our collection is

Tracing Your Ancestors Through Death Records: A Guide for Family His-

torians, by Celia Heritage.

Death records are frequently the most revealing since they

often give a far greater insight into our ancestors’ live and personali-

ties than those records created during their lifetime.

This book will lead you through all the essential types of

death records, showing how they can be found, read and interpreted.

Susan Blakeney, genealogist for the Laurel-Jones County Library System, is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogist, the Order of First Families of Mississippi, the Tallahala Chapter of the Daughter’s of the American Revolution, and numerous genealogical organizations and socie-ties throughout Mississippi.

Friends of the Ellisville Library is a busy group. The purpose of the Friends is to provide support and assistance to the Ellisville

library, the patrons of the library and to promote the library to the community. We do that in several ways. We occasionally do fund rais-

ers for something special at the library. Right now we are working toward a new outside electric sign for the library that will make the li-

brary fully visible. Our main activities revolve around the children of our county. Every other month we have an event for the children of

all ages.

We are always looking for more Friends to participate in our activities and have fun with us. Sometimes I don’t know who has

ades old and at first glance might appear outdated to young readers, but these stories have remained on bookshelves everywhere for a

reason: they can help the reader see the world in a different way. See through the eyes of orphans and social outcasts. Take on the world

with famous explorers and brave soldiers. Have a party with 20s jazz musicians and medieval court jesters. And so much more!

The Laurel library has come a long way since it first

began in 1919. It moved to its permanent home in

1978 at 530 Commerce St., Laurel, MS. In 1961, the

Laurel-Jones County Library added a branch: the El-

lisville Public Library. It moved to its permanent

home in 2009, at 201 Poplar Street, Ellisville, MS

39437.
