By virtually all accounts, the atmosphere this March at IHRSA’s 30th Anniversary International Convention & Trade Show – for which 10,400 industry professionals from around the world gathered in San Francisco, California –was upbeat, and energetic. Health club leaders are generally optimistic about the future of our industry.

In the U.S., health club membership reached 50.2 million in 2010 – an impressive 10.8% increase over 2009! While one year does not constitute a trend, it is certainly a positive sign that 2010 saw real membership growth in America after four years of stagnancy.

Worldwide, industry revenues reached $71 billion in 2010, up $4 billion from 2009. Memberships soared to an estimated 128 million members, and the overall number of clubs grew by over 5,000 units to 133,500 in 2010. These promising numbers are expanded upon in Industry Research (page 21).

Clubs are continuing to fight to get back to where they were before the “Great Recession,” which, by most accounts, ended in mid-2009. Brent Darden, the owner and general manager of TELOS Fitness Center in Dallas, Texas probably speaks for many of his peers when he says, “Our greatest challenge continues to be ‘managing through’ the recession and finding new ways to generate profits to pre-recession levels.”

One silver lining from the recession has been that many club operators have been able to take advantage of the softer real estate market in order to expand or lock in favorable long-term leases. Modest revenue growth, coupled with a continued strong emphasis on expense management, has improved club profitability.

The health club industry has weathered the recent economic storm better than many other industries. In fact, this is the third economic recession in the past two decades during which the health club industry has escaped major hardship and proven that fitness is a successful and enduring business endeavor. Today, IHRSA members are well-positioned to help improve the health and well-being of individuals, families and communities around the world.

If the vitality and passion on display at the industry’s premier annual gathering is any indication of the state of the global health club industry – and we believe it is – we can expect continued growth and positive financial results in the coming year.

Yours in health,

Jay M. Ablondi Kristen A. WalshPublisher Senior Editor

after a challenging 2009, the industry bounced back in 2010 with growth in many important areas.

Worldwide industry revenues reached an impressive $71 billion in 2010, up $4 billion from 2009. Memberships soared to an estimated 128 million

members, and the overall number of clubs grew by over 5,000 units to 133,500 in 2010.The industry has proven itself to be “recession-resilient,” according to consultant

Rick Caro, the president of Management Vision, Inc. “The number of club joiners increased in 2010, and clubs finally got control of the member attrition that plagued them in 2009,” he explains.

INDUSTRY OVERVIEW

THRIVING FRANCHISESFranchises had an especially noteworthy year.

ANYTIME FITNESS surpassed several important milestones in recent months, including welcoming its 1,000,000th member and opening 300 new clubs for the third consecutive year, giving the company a total of more than 1,600 clubs world-wide. Anytime Fitness also expanded its presence on two continents – Europe and Asia – opening new clubs in the United Kingdom and Japan.

SNAP FITNESS was recently named one of the top 500 franchises in the United States, ranking No. 33 in Entrepreneur Magazine’s Franchise 500®, No. 27 in Fastest-Growing franchises and No. 31 in America’s Top Global Franchises. The company was also named one of the “Top 21 Franchises for Young Entrepreneurs” by Under30CEO.com. “Despite the current eco-nomic conditions, the fitness industry is thriving and we have proven to have the right business model to guide our franchise system towards success,” said Peter Taunton, founder and CEO of Snap Fitness.

CURVES founders Diane and Gary Heavin had an eventful year. Diane was honored in late 2010 as one of the “50 Women Entreprenuers Who Inspire Us” by Self-Made Magazine. In April 2011, the Heavins were featured on ABC’s inspira-

tional new television show, Secret Millionaire. Curves now has nearly 10,000 locations in over 70 countries, serving more than 4,000,000 members.

ADAPTING INDEPENDENTSIndependent club operators have been making needed - and sometimes difficult - changes in order to stay competitive.

“Our greatest challenge continues to be ‘managing through’ the recession and finding new ways to generate profits to pre-recession levels,” says Brent Darden, the owner and general manager of TELOS Fitness Center in Dallas, Texas. To this end, his club has begun to partner with various clinicians, such as The Texas Anti-Aging Medicine Institute, to enhance the member experience. “Now, our members can address hormone deficiencies, low energy levels, mood swings, lack of sleep and libido issues with a private and convenient consultation from our new in-house partner,” he explains. “It is just another amenity to assist our members in their journey to feeling their best.”

“The old way of marketing and advertising doesn’t work like it used to,” notes Kay Yuspeh, the CEO of Wisconsin-based Elite Sports Clubs, who says she is facing more competition now than ever. “We are constantly trying new things and measuring the results.” According to Yuspeh, the fitness business is not as easy as newcomers often think. “It’s no longer ‘if you build it, they will come,’” she explains. “Price,

product, service, staff and location all enter into the equation.”

Susan Cooper, the owner of Body-Business Health Club & Spa in Austin, Texas, says her club was significantly affected by the recession in terms of membership and ancillary income. “I think the industry as we knew it before the economic downturn is never to be seen again,” she says. “This is the new normal. No longer will it seem like ‘fun’ to open a health club. Only the serious, forward-thinking operators will survive.”

She adds, “We are currently concen-trating on building our membership base using social media and increasing

our ancillary income through more focus on group training.”

In fact, social media has been a hot topic at recent industry events, in its publications and, of course, online. “As a business, you go where the consumers are, and the majority of consumers are on Facebook,” notes Justin Tamsett, the man-aging director of Active Management, Australia, an industry consulting firm. Users spend a whopping 11.7 billion hours visiting Facebook each month.

“Social media is a way to have a conversation with your public, and to establish a level of trust and respect for your subject matter – which is health and well-being,” explains Casey Conrad, the president of Communication Consultants, an industry consultancy based in Rhode Island. “You use it to engage your community.” Once you’ve done so, she says, you can then market your club to your social media followers.

“Technology and consumer trends are converg-ing to create a huge shift in the club industry,” notes Bryan O’Rourke, CEO of Integerus and CSO of Fitmarc. “Digital and physical engagement will combine to service members both inside and outside the four walls. This and other innovation will enable health clubs to begin to truly impact a failing health care system leading to a golden age of wellness and millions of more members.”

CLUB CHAINS HOLDING THEIR OWNClub One president and chief operating officer Bill McBride agrees. “I see more and more clubs learning how to communicate more effectively with their members, advocates and prospects through technology and social platforms,” he says. “Currently it’s the ‘wild west’ in this arena, but our industry is perfectly positioned to benefit from the evolution of communication and infor-mation convergence.”

Recently, Club One restructured organizationally in order to optimize growth. “The economy has stabilized and we are now seeing some degree of

growth,” says McBride. “Throughout our markets in California, there is still a significant amount of supply in the industry.” He adds, “Demand is beginning to be more visible with regard to new memberships and ancillary revenues.”

In December, club chain 24 Hour Fitness earned national accreditation from the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and an A+ rating for its 420+ club locations which serve nearly 4,000,000 members. “We are very proud of achieving an A+ rating and will continue to focus on providing clean, friendly, and well-maintained clubs for a great value to our members and guests,” said Carl Liebert III, chief executive officer for 24 Hour Fitness. “As a team, we have committed to uphold the high standards of the BBB and will continue to be responsive to the evolving needs of our members.”

Pop icon Madonna launched her own chain of clubs in 2010, opening her first Hard Candy Fit-ness club in Mexico City in November. There are plans for two more in Russia - in Moscow and St. Petersburg - both of which will be in partnership

with Irina Razumova, founder of the well-known Russian chain Planet Fitness. “We are honored to collaborate with Madonna and her team in design-ing and developing a beautiful facility like no other in the world,” stated Razumova.

“Teaming up with Mark Mastrov and his team at New Evolution Ventures (NEV), who have had so much prior success in finding the right locations and the right club operators, will help us determine where the next few Hard Candy gyms will open,” Madonna told CBI.

A GLANCE AROUND THE GLOBENORTH AMERICAIn March during IHRSA30, Robert Brewster, president of The Alaska Club, a network of 18 multipurpose facilities, was elected to the IHRSA board. For the past 28 years, Robert has managed a full spectrum of clubs: low price/high volume, sports training, tennis, key club and ultra high end. His broad experience and long relationship with IHRSA has given him a clear grasp of the circumstances facing the club industry.

Dr. Art Curtis of Boston-based Millennium Partners was elected to a second term as chair-person of the IHRSA Board of Directors. “I have thoroughly enjoyed serving the industry this past year as Chairman of the IHRSA Board and meeting so many wonderful people in our industry from around the world. It has truly been a labor of love and one that I look forward to continuing in the coming year,” he said.

According to Dr. Curtis, there are three main issues the IHRSA board will focus on over the next year. “We must ensure that IHRSA membership continues to provide the services members most value. We must make sure that our Public Policy

efforts are adequately funded so that we are able to support the critical issues that the industry faces over the long run, both in protecting the industry from damaging legislation, as well as promoting positive legislation that will help us become a health-ier nation by incorporating exercise as a critical part of primary disease prevention,” he says. “And, it is vital that the IHRSA Foundation gets off to a good start so that we have a way to communicate the contributions that health clubs are making toward a healthier world and to increase the body of valuable consumer and medical research aimed at growing the number of individuals who exercise,” Dr. Curtis adds. The IHRSA Foundation is aimed at promoting health through exercise.

On Capitol Hill, U.S. Senate Resolution 97, which affirms the importance of exercise and physical activity as a way of combating obesity, reducing chronic disease and lowering health care costs, passed in March in the Senate by unanimous consent. It was introduced by Senators Bob Casey (D-PA) and Richard Burr (R-NC).

“We applaud the bipartisan spirit in which the U.S. Senate worked to pass this Resolution on an issue that affects the health of all Americans,” says Joe Moore, president and CEO of IHRSA. “In this era, when the health of our nation is at risk due to increased rates of obesity and physical inactivity, the promotion of exercise and physically active lifestyles as a way to help prevent disease is an issue of national concern.”

As noted in the Resolution itself, approximately half of the direct medical costs associated with diseases that stem from obesity and inactivity are paid for by the government and U.S. taxpayers through federally funded programs, such as Medicaid and Medicare. Yet, the potential savings in direct medical costs if all inactive American adults engaged in regular physical activity could be as high as $80,000,000,000.

“IHRSA has taken the resolution and distilled it into a unified game plan we can all get behind, called A Vision for a Healthier, More Prosperous America,” says Meredith Poppler, IHRSA’s vice president of industry growth.

Also in March, U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Regina Benjamin spoke at IHRSA30. Her presence at this event underscored the vital link between the medical and fitness communities. “I truly believe that exercise is medicine,” said Dr. Benjamin. “The fitness industry is poised

to step up as a solution to our country’s problem with overweight and obesity.”

Dr. Benjamin noted the importance of IHRSA’s Get Active America!, a national health promotion campaign to establish IHRSA clubs as the leading voice in their communities for healthy and active lifestyles.

GoodLife Fitness, the largest fitness club chain in Canada with almost 300 clubs from coast-to-coast, is planning a significant expansion over the next five years, with the goal of establishing approxi-mately 100 new clubs by 2016. The company has secured a $125 million loan from Penfund (an independent provider of capital to middle market organizations). According to John Bradlow, a part-ner of Penfund, “GoodLife’s strong position in the Canadian fitness sector, its position as the fifth

largest fitness club chain in the world, the highly accomplished management team and its distinc-tive culture combine to make it an ideal invest-ment for Penfund.”

“In 2009/10, when many businesses faced chal-lenging times, GoodLife Fitness grew by over 60 percent, demonstrating that Canadians recognize the value of investing in their health and wellness,” says David Patchell-Evans, the company’s founder and CEO, and IHRSA Board Ex-Officio Chairperson.

Further south, the biggest challenge for Mexican clubs and suppliers is to formalize and professional-ize the industry, says Jose Antonio Marsico, the CEO of Body Systems Mexico. “We’ve also seen a slow economy in the last 12 months, which has resulted in changing consumer habits,” he says. “Potential buyers were more cautious, and had less trust in the market, and exercise became a low priority for many people.”

Marsico expects the Mexican fitness industry to focus on serving children, older adults and especially

families, because “Mexico is a country where family is the core,” he says, adding that the country is taking steps to address its childhood obesity epidemic, including a new law promoting exercise in elementary schools and new regulations regarding school meals.

SOUTH AMERICAIn Equador, only about 1.1% of the population uses health clubs, according to Enrique La Motta, owner of Phisique Wellness Club. “Consumers are still uneducated about the benefits of a healthy body,” he explains. “This is a huge challenge, along with prohibitive taxes on the fitness indus-try and the shortage of industry professionals.” On a positive note, Ecuador is an oil-producing country, and prices have risen in the past year, which will benefit the country and its fitness industry, adds La Motta.

The number of health clubs in Brazil totals more than 18,000 facilities, making it second only to the United States in number of clubs. “During the next few years, we will be the biggest country in the health and lifestyle environment,” predicts Fitness Brasil founder and president Waldyr Soares, who received the President’s Award at IHRSA’s 30th Annual International Convention & Trade Show in March. “The field which will grow the most is the low-cost clubs and gyms.”

Brazil-based Companhia Athletica will soon open its third club in less than a year, according to its president, Richard Bilton. “Our biggest challenge is to provide the same quality and results in all of our clubs despite the difficulty of increasing costs,” he says, adding that Brazil is a very expensive country in which to operate.

The biggest challenge of Venezuelan club opera-tors is to build a national culture that values fitness, says Andrés Capriles, CEO of Valle Arriba Athletic

Club and Gold’s Gym. The country’s fitness industry is undeveloped, he adds, “but certainly clubs that offer unique services and activities that enhance a sense of community and promote enjoyable conversations will be the ones that survive in the near future.”

EUROPEThe industry saw growth in most markets in Europe in 2010, according to Hans Muench, IHRSA’s Director Europe. He says that VAT increases, especially in Portugal and Ireland, are currently one of the region’s biggest challenges, and that European banks are recovering and beginning to finance clubs once again.

In late 2010, Health City acquired all 57 Fitness First Clubs in the Benelux, which combined with their takeover of budget chain Basic Fit, increasing its total size to 210 clubs. In February, McFit reached 1 million members over 125 clubs in three countries with further growth planned.

“In the coming year, I expect to see budget club consolidation in several markets, with substantial growth in other markets of the low-cost model, and I expect premium and special-interest clubs to grow as well,” says Muench.

Europeans Christian Pierar and Jasmin Kirstein were elected to the IHRSA Board in March 2011 as full members. They join Kilian Fisher, the CEO of ILAM, The Industry Body for Sports, Fitness, Aquatic Facilities, Spas & Wellness in Ireland, bringing the European representation on the IHRSA board to three members, the most ever.

Pierar, the founder and Chairman of the Belgium Fitness Federation, was previously the IHRSA board of directors’ Special Advisor Europe and has been active in the fitness industry since 1980 as a club owner, international consultant and international presenter. His commitment to help other business people in our industry led him to create and support such organizations as the

Belgium Fitness Employer Organization and the European Health and Fitness Association.

Kirstein, a 27-year industry veteran, is the founder and CEO of My Sportlady in Munich, Germany.

According to Kirstein, the biggest news out of Germany is that the government is offering 44i(US $64) tax-free to all of its employees, which can be used for fitness membership fees. “Until now, companies had to have the contract with the clubs, which they did not want, because if the employee left the company the company was left with a fitness contract,” she explains. “Now, the employee pays the club fee and the tax can be reduced on salary.”

In Ireland, three Total Fitness Clubs closed without notice in March, and the 10 Jackie Skelly clubs were taken over by Energie with one club closing, reports ILAM’s Fisher. “Ireland has dropped dramatically from the Celtic tiger into recession and, despite a new government, is effectively under the control of the IMF and EU,” he says. “People are seeking more value for their money and gym usage is rising back up.” This year, ILAM is developing new White Flag Quality standards for clubs and launching REPS Ireland - the independent national register of fitness instructors and personal trainers in Ireland.

Pure Gym, which started in 2009 and currently has 12 gyms open and an additional four sites secured, plans to have 25 locations across the U.K. by the end of 2011. “By breaking down barriers to fitness we aim to encourage those who have never exercised before, in particular those over 35, and provide an affordable and flexible option for those who do,” says founder and CEO Peter Roberts. “It’s also important to make people aware of the

“In the coming year, I expect to see budget club consolidation in several markets, with substantial growth in other markets of the low-cost model, and I expect premium and special-interest clubs to grow as well,” says Muench.

effects that regular exercise can have on their health, both now and in the future.”

Also, in the U.K., the buildup to the 2012 London Olympics is having a positive effect for the health club industry, and the government has pledged that they will benefit the overall population.

FIBO celebrated its 26th anniversary in April as Europe’s key health, fitness, and wellness trade event. Essen, Germany, welcomed over 30,000 health industry professionals and an additional 20,000 individuals interested in overall health from 100 countries.

ASIAThe devastating 8.9-magnitude earthquake that hit off the east coast of Japan in March 2011 was one of the most intense in recorded history. It triggered a 23-foot tsunami that battered Japan’s

coast, killing at least 14,000 people, with nearly as many still missing.

The FIA Japan has indicated that more than 100 clubs sustained damage, with 30 clubs without a forecast for re-opening. These clubs are spread over seven prefectures and include both large chain clubs (with their own internal corporate support structures) and single-club operations, which must rely on their own work to “fill their rice bowls.” Electricity in many areas of Japan is being rationed and re-routed to the affected areas, and general businesses are reducing their hours of operation to reduce consumption and contribute to the recovery.

Currently, the major obstacles in Japan are the shortage of materials, manpower and energy to begin the restructuring. The best news out of this tragedy is that there has been no reported loss of human life from these clubs. The industry is activating programs and relief efforts country-wide and will be shortly releasing these plans to the global industry for its future support.

One entrepreneur, John Boardman, Director of Tokyo-based Bravo Group, has instructed his sales team to “focus on service” as it is not consid-ered appropriate to push “sales” in these hard times. Such an attitude will certainly impact his

corporate financial position for the foreseeable future, but nonetheless they are supporting the collective recovery efforts through shoring up of club customers as well as actively engaging in charitable activities.

Town Sports International (TSI) has contributed over $50,000 to the American Red Cross to support its ongoing efforts to provide assistance and relief to Japan. For a period during March, TSI health clubs donated 100% of the joining fee from new enrollments. “The need in Japan is enormous, so we are thankful to partner with the Red Cross as they continue to provide thousands of survivors in Japan with life-saving aid,” said Robert Giardina, CEO and President of TSI. “As the country’s recov-ery needs evolve, we want to encourage others to help in whatever way they can.”

In other news from the continent, Asia continues to embrace the franchise model, with most of the “fast fitness” models present now in various areas of Asia, according to John Holsinger, IHRSA’s Asia Pacific Director. “However, there are also the franchises in trouble due to the franchisee either being not a business person, nor a fitness person, and not knowing their fundamental numbers for their businesses,” he explains. “The key to longevity in this growth model in such new markets where the ‘wow’ overcomes the ‘how’ will be for the franchisors themselves to hold back their appointments until they find the good business people capable of implementing the fundamentals required for our businesses to thrive.”

Last year saw Asian industry growth in both supplier and club-side business, while dealing with the inevitable reconciliation in major markets and players in the Asian region following the global eco-nomic crisis, explains Holsinger. “This reconciliation will continue, and is a good thing for the industry, as it realigns focus towards the fundamental strengths of each club chain whether it be by business model, location or competition,” he says. “Some less mature markets are going through their own transition issues, with large local chains either showing great

“A key factor for growing country-specific markets will be to form an association of club members which speaks with one voice on behalf of the industry.”

expansion through new channels such as express and residentially centered clubs in India while the imported clubs struggle with rents and general operational challenges.”

Holsinger believes a key factor for growing coun-try-specific markets will be to form an association of club members (either loosely or formally) which speaks with one voice on behalf of the industry and works to protect both their businesses and the consumers buying our services. “As governments - such as those in Thailand and Indonesia - react to the proliferation of questionable membership practices attempting to support unsustainable business models by throwing up additional taxes and regulating membership contracts and operating practices with unreasonable rulings, the industry must self-govern before these prob-lems get out of hand, not just react to salvage a damaged situation after the fact,” he explains.

Other groups are going out of business because of unsustainable business models, or being assimilated by competitors such as in China and Taiwan, adds Holsinger. “It is somewhat unfortunate that the lead-ership in these less mature markets haven’t always

learned from the operational mistakes from other countries, as it will always be the customers who suf-fer most, bringing with it the inevitable (and usually unsuccessful) governmental attempts to micro-control the industry. This is where building an association (with IHRSA and other local clubs) can play a large role in benchmarking successes on a global basis.”

OCEANIAIn February, a massive earthquake struck Christ-church, New Zealand’s second largest city. Buildings crumbled into the streets after the 6.3 magnitude earthquake, which geologists consider an aftershock to a 7.1 earthquake that caused no casualties in September 2010. This one was more devastating and deadly – killing at least 160 people – because it was centered only six miles from the city’s center and hit during the middle of a workday.

In Christchurch, Richard Beddie and his Fit-nessNZ team quickly began fundraising and industry support efforts. With all the clubs in the center of

Christchurch in the devastated “no go” zone, busi-nesses and staff were left to fend for themselves. One of FitnessNZ’s focuses has been the erection and equipping of marques (large tents) in parks and open spaces to allow trainers and their clients a place to train and maintain some balance in their lives.

In addition, Johannes Marx, the MD of BSA-Akademie and the German College of Prevention and Health Management, has offered to place some affected Christchurch trainers into a few of their affiliated clubs around Germany for three to six months to provide them a meaningful way to earn a living during this difficult time.

Paul Richards, CEO of Club Physical, reports that his company organized a month-long fundraiser promotion with all monies raised (over $5,000) going to Christchurch earthquake victims.

In Australian news, Fitness First celebrated its tenth year in operation on the continent, where it has 93 facilities. The company has 540 clubs worldwide in 19 countries.

In January, Fitness Australia commissioned major accounting firm Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, to prepare a detailed submission to the Federal Treasury in relation to the expansion of the fringe benefits tax (FBT) exemption for fitness benefits. The goal is to present a clear, evidence-based economic case to government as to how and why the current FBT legislation should be changed to create a greater level of incentive for the Australian workforce to undertake regular exercise to improve their health, wellbeing and productivity. The submission is being supported by an advocacy program targeting key business and employer groups, unions, government agen-cies, government ministers and political advisors.

LOOKING AHEADFor those who weathered the economic downturn - especially those willing to take advantage of the changing marketplace - the present is a good time to be in the fitness industry. The lack of leveraged debt, which greatly affected the global fitness industry in late 2008 and throughout 2009, is improving. In many cases, interest rates and rents are even lower than before the recession, and soft real estate markets present some very appealing investment opportunities.

“I am sensing realistic optimism,” says Rick Caro. “Club operators are once again thinking long-term, going back to proper levels of capital spending, taking steps to maximize facility space, and replacing things they might have instead repaired a year ago.” He expects to see more new clubs opening in the near future than in the recent past, and says he would not be surprised by another initial public offering (IPO) by a club company by early 2012. •

INDUSTRY GROWTH in Mature Markets Signals

THE AMERICASLast year, the U.S. health club industry increased revenue by 4% to $20.3 billion. The number of health clubs remained relatively steady at 29,890, while membership grew an impressive 10.8% to 50.2 million individuals. In 2010, roughly 30% - or 14.6 million - were new members. In addition, 7.6 million consumers used health clubs as non-members.

At the start of 2010, the Canadian market posted slight improvements, generating $2.2 billion in revenues with an estimated 5.5 million members. Latin American markets also posted solid performances in 2010. In Brazil 5.5 million people exercised at 18,000 clubs in 2010, contributing to a market size of $2.2 billion. The health club industry in Argentina served over one million members in 5,200 facilities.

EUROPE The European health club market currently generates the greatest amount of revenue of all regions at $31 billion per year. Total number of clubs exceeded 48,000 in 2010, while membership reached 44 million. Recent industry studies from DSSV in Germany point to the potential of continued growth in the European market.

From 2009 to 2010, Germany increased the number of clubs from 5,930 to 6,703. Memberships also increased by 11% from 7.1 million in 2009 to 7.9 million in 2010. Budget clubs and circuit-training facilities have contributed to industry growth in the German market.

CONTINUED GROWTH AHEAD FOR ALL MARKETS

after slowly climbing out of the global economic crisis, select health club markets experienced positive growth from 2009 to 2010. These markets fueled industry growth in 2010. Worldwide, health club industry revenues reached $71 billion in 2010, up $4 billion from $67 billion in 2009.

Memberships have soared past the 120 million mark to an estimated 128 million members. Overall number of clubs grew by over 5,000 units from 128,500 in 2009 to 133,500 in 2010.

Robust performance is also anticipated from the UK once updated statistics are released later in 2011. Results from an annual survey conducted by the Leisure Database Company shows a slight increase in the number of UK clubs from 5,795 in 2009 to 5,885 in 2010. Membership also increased from 7.3 million in 2009 to 7.4 million in 2010. In addition, market size increased to $5.6 billion.

ASIA-PACIFIC While the global financial crisis grew, health club growth was uneven in emerging Asia-Pacific markets. In countries that suffered from the crisis, the growth of health clubs was slow or flat. Thailand, in particular, suffered from a political crisis as well that led to violence and destruction, resulting in the loss of the True Fitness Zen Central club in Bangkok. Other countries, such as Indonesia, were relatively unaffected by the crisis, which put Celebrity Fitness in a position to acquire California Fitness’s Malaysian operations. Hong Kong, on the other hand, was flat.

As the region emerges from the global financial crisis, opportunities for growth abound in the Asia-Pacific region. China, Japan and Australia have consistently posted solid performance. Growth and expansion opportunities exist for current club operators and developers in emerging markets such as Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, and India.

The Japanese fitness market generated an estimated $5.1 billion in 2010, with about 4,000 health clubs. According to Club Business Japan, after three years of slowed growth or slight declines, the first quarter of 2010 was marked by an uptrend. Club operators are looking for ways to attract the younger public, many of whom dropped their memberships last year. The emergence of new, flexible membership options in Japan may be helpful in attracting a younger population, who are typically more price-sensitive than veteran members. In spite of the market’s potential, recent events in Japan will likely result in a challenging year in 2011, extending well beyond the health club industry. It is important to note that at press time, the full effects of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan were not known.

Memberships have soared past the 120 million mark to an estimated 128 million members.
