I think most of you will agree that we’ve been lucky

with the weather this summer. But now that the holidays

are over it’s time to “pick ourselves up, dust ourselves

down, and start all over again” for the beginning of the

autumn.

It is difficult to believe that 100 years ago the First

World War had just started. According to Wikipedia,

“the total number of military and civilian

casualties in World War I was over 37 million. There

were over 16 million deaths and 20 million wounded

ranking it among the deadliest conflicts in human

history”. Those figures are difficult to comprehend but

on page 7 of this issue of the Holton Post we have had a

look at how it affected our small village which sent over

one hundred men to join in the fight for this country.

Much of the research has taken place at Halesworth

Museum whose members have been researching World

War I for the anniversary year. They have display

cabinets which give details about the local territorial

battalion and several of the Halesworth men who

served, so if you are interested in finding out more, do

pay the museum a visit. It is open Tuesdays to

Saturdays from 10am to 12.30pm and Wednesday

afternoons from 2 to 4pm.

THE HOPPA We would like to see more passengers from Holton

using The Hoppa. We cover Bungay Road, Lodge

Close. It is an hourly service, timetables are on the bus,

not have designated bus stops. The more passengers we

carry, keeps the wheels turning. Bus passes accepted.

If you need help on or off with your shopping, we

have bus buddies on board namely David or Lesley. The

bus service is for use by anyone, not just pensioners.

David, one of our buddies, runs ''Days Out'' on a

HALESWORTH COMMUNITY NURSING

CARE FUND (HCNCF) MAJOR CAMPAIGN TO BRING HEALTH

SUPPORT CLOSER TO HOME On 6 June, a major campaign was launched to raise

£714,000 for an innovative centre to provide

information and support closer to home for people who

have been diagnosed with cancer and other life-limiting

illnesses.

Halesworth Community Nursing Care Fund (HCNCF)

hopes to build the new Information and Support Centre

(ISC) on land next to Cutlers Hill Surgery in

Halesworth. It will offer a wide range of holistic

services to patients from across north east Suffolk and

south Norfolk, including help in understanding a

diagnosis, counselling, bereavement support, financial

and benefits advice, wig-fitting and complementary

therapies such as acupuncture and massage.

Currently, around 50,000 people living in the rural

communities around Halesworth, Stradbroke, Bungay,

Framlingham, Saxmundham, Southwold, Beccles and

Leiston have to travel up to 30 miles to a major town to

access help and support for life-limiting illnesses. The

ISC aims to plug this gap in provision, in turn reducing

the need for people to drive or use public transport at

what is already inevitably a difficult time for them, their

families and carers.

Ted Edwards, ISC chairman, said: “We are delighted

to launch this major campaign to raise money to build

this innovative and valuable resource which will support

vulnerable members of our community when they need

it the most.

“Travelling long distances to existing facilities can be

difficult for people who rely on public transport or

particularly daunting for older drivers or anyone who is

feeling vulnerable following their diagnosis or unwell

after treatment. That is why we are so keen to provide

this vital support closer to people’s homes at the time

when they need it the most.

“Easy to access and open to everyone, the ISC will

have a positive, family-friendly atmosphere so that

people can relax, share their anxieties and get clear

answers to any questions they may have. We firmly

believe it will quickly become a valuable asset which

will make a real difference to the lives of people of all

ages within our rural community.

“We are now appealing for anyone who can help raise

funds for this fantastic resource to get in touch and help

turn our vision into a reality. Every penny really does

count and will make a huge difference to hundreds of

families in the future.”

A variety of fundraising events have already been

organised to take place throughout the year, including

sponsored bike rides, music events and race nights.

Did you know? From 14th to 19th September the

Charity’s Chairman, Dr Richard Kell

and his son Jon are undertaking a

sponsored coast-to-coast cycle ride

from St David’s, Pembrokeshire to the

Suffolk Coast to raise funds for the

HCNCF.

Four hundred miles in just six days will

prove quite a challenge. If you’d like to

support Richard and Jon in their

endeavours to raise £5,000, the online donation page for

this event can be reached by going to:

First of all many thanks to all who supported our scrap

metal collection in July. I think we were all amazed

how popular this event was, from 8.00am to early

afternoon there was a steady stream of people bringing

items by foot, wheelbarrow, car and trailer. The

collection van was also kept busy, grateful thanks to

Kevin, Karen and Gary of Edwards for providing this

service. Special thanks too to Mr Holt and Mr Lickman

who were responsible for organising this event. As well

as providing a “green” solution for unwanted metal it

also raised £300 for the school.

Another successful “green” initiative is the collection

of ink cartridges which has recently generated £126 for

the school. Please bring along any used cartridges to

the school office where they will be gratefully received.

An update from a couple of fundraising events held

early in the summer term. The sponsored walk on the

school field raised £860 while the school fete made over

£1,500. The whole school community would like to

thank everyone who has supported school events

through the year. In the next year the PTA is being

relaunched and renamed the “Friends of Holton”, this is

to emphasise and encourage the already strong links the

school has with the local community as demonstrated

by the support given to school events as above. Look

out for posters inviting you to come to an open meeting

and see if you would like to join “The Friends”. As with

the current PTA, all parents and carers of pupils will

automatically be members of the new group but it

would be great to welcome other locals to the “Friends

of Holton”.

Already there are plans for a Jumble Sale in the

Autumn term and also a cake stall outside the Angel in

Halesworth – dates for these will be put on the school

website as soon as they are arranged.

There were the usual end of term events in July. The

whole school went on a fantastic trip to Africa Alive in

Kessingland, many thanks to the PTA for funding this

trip. A great day was had by all.

Key Stage 2 pupils put on a magnificent performance

of ‘Joseph’ with Kestrel pupils providing the chorus

while Red Kites were the actors. It was fantastic to

watch and all involved are to be congratulated.

Red Kites also put on a Brass Instrument performance

where they showed all they had learned in less than 12

months. Again it was most impressive and demonstrated

the impact of the expert tuition provided by Mr Flack

of the Suffolk Music Service. Thanks too to Mrs

Madden who has volunteered to come in every week

and assist Mr Flack.

Sports afternoon was

held on a very warm

afternoon and was well

attended by family and

friends.

Finally on the last day of

term Year Six pupils went

on a trip to go roller

skating in Lowestoft

followed by a fish and

chips lunch. Once again

the PTA showed their

generosity in paying for

this trip. Pupils then

returned to school for the

Leaver’s Assembly. At

this very special assembly

all the leavers performed

individually or as a group

showing the appreciative

(and emotional) audience

what a wide range of

talents our pupils have.

Each pupil was also

presented with a Book

Token and a Dictionary/

Thesaurus to help them

with their onward learning

journey.

MINUTES OF A MEETING OF THE COUNCIL HELD ON THURSDAY 24TH JULY 2014 AT

7.00P.M PRESENT: Councillors D Fosdike, G Cackett, M

Hart, M Jones, D. Davis, N Kerridge.

APOLOGIES: Cllr R Stephenson DC/14/2046/OUT Outline Application – Land at,

Fairview Road and Norwich Road, Halesworth/Holton.

Demolition of existing workshop and construction of

24no. Dwellings and 1no BI Commercial Unit.

The application was discussed at length, and Cllr

Fosdike gave an overview of the Halesworth Town

Council meeting at which it was discussed. The site is in

both Parishes. A recommendation for rejection was

made, proposed by MJ and Seconded by MH on the

following grounds:

1. Over development of the land, not in keeping with

current area and designs of surrounding properties.

Does not meet with the current Planning Guidance.

2. Infrastructure and drainage concerns. The Gull

already gets blocked as it is not cleared regularly,

there have been 3 major floods to the village and in

that area over 27 years, and particularly lately during

flash floods the roads become impassable. There is

currently insufficient infrastructure for additional

home in this area. I.e doctors, schools and general

amenities.

3. Access to both parts of the site from Fairview Road,

and the access opposite the industrial site on

Norwich Road. There appear to be multiple access

points to both main roads, and no foot path for

pedestrians.

4. The family homes appear to have little if any garden

and there is no open space provision for children to

play.

5. Change of use from industrial to residential and loss

of industrial site. The site does not appear to have

been put on the open market to see if it would sell as

it stands.

– change of use from Shop/Office to residential

dwelling with office/shop. The application was

in favour. Meeting dates for this year are as follows: 3rd

September and 5th November. All days are Wednesdays

CHURCH NEWS AND EVENTS

CELTIC MORNING WORSHIP On the third Sunday of September, October and

November we will be having a morning service in the

style of the Iona Community. Iona is an island off the

west coast of Scotland which has been a centre of

Christian worship for a long time. Earlier in the year a

group of us from various churches locally went there for

a few days; it was a wonderful experience, the island

itself is fascinating, the wildlife (including dolphins)

marvellous, the Abbey a great place to worship God.

The services there are relaxed even though they follow

a distinct pattern, the music is easy to sing and the

whole experience is one of warmth and friendship. We

are hoping to bring some of that experience to St Peter's

Church and hope that you will come and join us in

worshipping God in this special way.

HARVEST FESTIVAL On the 12th October we will be holding our annual

service to thank God for his provision for us. The seed

planted months ago has grown and matured and

produced its own crop of seeds which have been

harvested. Driving around locally it always amazes me

how quickly the harvest is gathered in, the fields

manured and ploughed ready for the next crop to be

planted. How thankful are we for all the work that goes

in to the production of our food? The shelves in the

shops groan with food for us to buy. In the Blyth Valley

we are fortunate that we can eat so much food that is

produced locally, but we need to be thankful also for all

those farmers and fishermen, processors and

manufacturers that we normally don't think about.

So come and join us for our Harvest service, the

Church will be full of flowers and produce, the Harvest

loaf will be eaten, and we will thank God for His

goodness.

FLOWER FESTIVAL A big THANK YOU to Dot Booley and Helen

Knevett for organising such a splendid weekend, and

thank you all for supporting it. We raised over

£1000.00! But most of all everyone enjoyed it.

IT’S (NEARLY) HALLOWEEN!! Q: Who would write a book about Halloween?

A: A ghostwriter!

Thank goodness for Halloween, all of a sudden,

cobwebs in my house look like decorations!

TOUCHING THE TIDE Touching the Tide, is a Landscape Partnership

Scheme set up to look after the Suffolk coast with

funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and others.

Many people see coastal change as the biggest

potential threat to this landscape, but the way that this

coast is always changing is part of what makes it such

a special place. Touching the Tide aims to help people

make well informed choices about the future of our

coast and to this end is supporting a number of our

activities.

The Changing Coastline Talk with Dr Tom Williamson (UEA) and Karen Thomas (Environment Agency)

Thursday 11 September 10.30am – 12.30pm

Cost £5 Venue: The Cut Arts Centre, New Cut,

Halesworth We have all heard about coastal change and erosion,

and may have experienced it at first hand, but what is

the long view? How does such an ever-changing

environment shape our lives? What do we need to

know and is there anything we can be doing at a local

or individual level?

Two fascinating speakers, experts in their own fields,

will throw some light on these issues and answer

questions from the audience. Anyone who attended

last November’s ‘Go Explore!’ day will recall that

Tom Williamson (Professor in English Landscape

History at UEA) is a riveting speaker with an

encyclopaedic knowledge of the East Anglian

landscape, and Karen Thomas (Senior Coastal Adviser

for EA) likewise brings great knowledge and passion

about the contemporary landscape and future change.

HOLTON AND THE

FIRST WORLD WAR

War Memorial in Holton

Churchyard Roll of Honour of those who served in

World War One

and farm labourer. By the 1911 Census, their father had

re-married, a Violet Keeble from Wickham Market and

they had a 3 month old son. At that time Albert’s

occupation was listed as “Flagman with Tractor” and

Edward was an “Errand Boy” and they were still living

in Holton.

According to Halesworth Museum, Albert enlisted as

a regular soldier in the Royal Garrison Artillery in 1912

and saw service in India before being sent to France

with his battery in 1915. He arrived there on 4th March

1915, the very same day his younger brother Edward

was killed. Albert himself was killed in action on 2nd

May 1918 having survived 3 years at the front.

One of the youngest names on the Holton memorial is

that of George Edgar Redgrave, who was born in

Holton in 1901, the son of Jonathan and Charlotte

Redgrave. He joined the Royal Navy as a boy but died

‘from disease’ in 1918 aged 17 – the day before the

Armistice was signed and is buried in Holton

Churchyard. Another soldier from Holton, Albert

Newby, died the day after Armistice Day, this time from

the Spanish flu which was prevalent at that time.

The focus nowadays seems to be on how many were

killed in the First World War but in the case of Holton it

is worth remembering that 82% of the men on our Roll

of Honour survived the war, though one wonders how

many of those suffered for many years as a result of

their injuries sustained on the battlefield.

Much has been written about the fact that this August

saw the centenary of the start of the First World War.

In commemoration Halesworth Museum has done a lot

of research on those killed in action in Holton and

Halesworth, whose names appear on the War

Memorials, some, but not all of them on both memorials

though we’re not sure why.

Some of you may remember that the Holton Post

found details of some of the names on the War

Memorial in Holton Churchyard a few years ago, so this

time I have looked at the Roll of Honour inside the

church as well. There are 107 names on the board

altogether, 6 Officers listed at the top, one of whom was

killed in action, followed by 96 names of other ranks.

There are also 5 volunteers shown and I discovered that

they would probably have been members of the

Voluntary Training Corps, the home defence force

which in 1916 became D Company of the 3rd Volunteer

Battalion, Suffolk Regiment (VBSR).

Although several on the list joined the Royal Navy

and two the RAF (only formed towards the end of the

war), most men were in the Army and I was surprised to

see that many of those enlisted in regiments outside East

Anglia, as well as the Suffolk Regiment, but apparently

that was common when conscription came in and men

were drafted where needed. What also struck me was

the fact that there were so many men with the same

surname – 6 with the name Butcher for instance, 4 of

whom served in the Royal Navy and 2 in the Suffolk

Regiment. There were 3 named Barham, 4 named

Canham, one of whom was killed and is listed on

Holton memorial and 6 named Spall, one of whom is

also on the war memorial.

When I looked at the names on Holton war memorial

itself, I found two pairs with the same name and so I

decided to try and find out if they came from the same

family. I found that Richard and William Parker had

different parents but that Albert and Edward Grice were

brothers; it must have been devastating for their father

that both were killed.

The Grice brothers were both born in Blyford but their

A SEASONAL RECIPE BLACKBERRY COULIS

This is the time of year for picking blackberries*,

so why not use some to make this delicious sauce?

1. Put about 250g of blackberries into a small pan

with 50g sugar and 100ml water. Bring to the boil

and simmer for about 5 mins until the fruit is soft.

2. Stir in ½ tsp vanilla extract and leave to cool a

little.

3. Tip contents into a blender and whizz to a puree,

then strain through a sieve to remove seeds.

4. This will keep for 3 days in the fridge or it can be

frozen and defrosted later.

This sauce is excellent drizzled over vanilla ice-

cream, but for a special dessert try this easy Honey

Cream.

1. Mix a 500g pot of Greek yogurt with 2-3 tsps

runny honey.

2. Divide about 100g blackberries between 4

glasses, drizzle with a little of the coulis and

spoon over the yoghurt.

3. Top with the remaining berries and more coulis.

* Raspberries could be used instead when in season

WARM HOMES

HEALTHY PEOPLE Support is available for Suffolk residents who are

struggling to keep warm or are worried about the cost of

heating their home. The funding is designed to support

those most in need of additional help through the winter

months. Anyone who has a vulnerable relative or

neighbour is urged to help them find out more about

what support and assistance might be available to them.

This includes:

• emergency boiler repairs, or

• insulation and other energy- efficiency measures

including draught proofing,

• assistance with paying fuel bills or

• the loan of an emergency heater

• a free home energy survey carried out by an

independent surveyor

People could qualify for the free survey if they own or

privately rent their home and:

• someone living in the property is over 60 or under 5

years old or

• someone living in the property is in receipt of a

disability or means tested benefit or

• the property is within Council Tax band A-C

To find out more or book a survey call 08456 037 686

(Local rate, lines open Monday-Friday 9 - 5pm).
