He started his advertising career at the age of 23 and quickly got comfortable being
uncomfortable, and has stuck to creating engaging campaigns ever since.
His first step was joining the award winning TTL agency The Jupiter Drawing Room in
their early years. Darren contributed to many of their awards, both local and international,
on brands including Nando’s, Daihatsu, Musica and Business Day Newspapers.
Five years later, eager to test the international market, Darren landed a senior role in
a large ATL London-based agency called DMB&B. Skittles, Twix and Mars chocolates
became close brand companions of his, gaining hours of airtime across UK TV channels.
For the next six years, Darren made London his base, and worked at the best agencies in
the city. He did MG Car campaigns at M&C Saatchi. At TBWA he developed campaigns
for Mercedes Benz and Smart Car. Bacardi, Nescafé, Clearasil and Coca-Cola
experienced his magic at McCann.
A FEW FACTS ABOUT DARREN McKAY, FOUNDER AND OWNER OF THE GREENHOUSE
An offer to head-up and take the creative reigns at The Jupiter Drawing Room, Cape Town, was
something worth returning to South Africa for. After five jam-packed, creative years, Darren was
asked to start Black River FC, Cape Town, as a new department of The Jupiter Group.
Starting this new department taught him Business 101 and the fundamentals of good business
practice. These lessons and invaluable experience geared him up for the big time, his own
creative agency, The Greenhouse.
The Greenhouse Advertising Agency has been flourishing for the last 3 years, with serious
intentions of innovative brand development. The agency offers multi-platform expertise and
firmly believes that without the Big Idea, there is no brand growth, just servicing.
Darren was chosen to judge the 2013 Loerie Awards as recognition for his experience, talent
and contribution to the industry. But he still believes that the best campaigns are still to come.

THE 5 ‘P’S OF THE GREENHOUSEPEDIGREE Darren McKay was the creative director at The Jupiter Drawing Room, Cape Town, before starting
The Greenhouse Advertising Agency. During his career he has worked at numerous top agencies,
both locally and internationally. He shelves a number of top local and international awards and
was recently appointed to judge the 2013 Loerie Awards.
PARENTAGE As well as his vast local experience, Darren McKay spent seven years working on world-class
brands at the best agencies in London (M&C Saatchi, TBWA, McCann) For over 22 years he has
grown brands into household names. His experience includes above-the-line, below-the-line and
through-the-line advertising. He also holds an International Diploma in Digital Marketing.
