My Dear Teas: Well, I guess its over. We are away off the beaten track and can't tell for sure, but the guns have stopped and we can draw our own conclusions.

We are in tenta, no floors and a sea of mud everywhere. Shell holes are so thick that in many places two or three run into each other. "Duds" lie all around, the trees are only stubs, the roads are hung on either side with camoflaged wire, and the towns are —NOT. We are in the shadow of the most celebrated hill in France where four hundred thousand men have died. You have seen pictures of the devas­tated areas in France, so had I, but they don't begin to give you any idea of the real thing; it is ruin—absolute and utter ruin. On this hill humn bones lie thick, shoes with feet still in them, gun pits, trenches, barb wire and shell holes, stubs of trees that look like chewed sticks here and there. I can't begin to tell you.

The town nearest us is a mass o ruins, not one single building left, parts of walls with great holes in them is all. I would give a shirt for a camera an(i permission to use it. I could certainly get some real pic­tures, but nothing doing. I picked a little red leaf from the edge of a trench and a couple of flowers the day peace was declared and will en­close them; they are fertilized by hu­man blood, and from the famous hill Mort La Homme (dead man's hill). I haven't the slightest idea where we will go from here, but if it is really over we won't be needed here, these mobile units following the troops, so it will probably be disbanded.

I had one satisfaction anyway— I wasn't back in a peaceful base, but in at the death. We heard the last gun and will in all probability get the last man wounded. The way we have been going if it had lasted another month we would have been in the trenches, but I have seen everything I wanted to but an airplane duel, and now that is too late; but why worry, I have seen more wonderful things in the last four months than in all my life before.

They just brought in some wounded and I have to go to work, so will fin­ish this later.

November 11th, 1 p. m.—Finis la Guerre. For sure that was a false alarm in the beginning of this letter, but at 11 this morning we stood out­side the tent and on the dot the ter­rific barrage they have been putting
