The Fourth Sunday of Advent
The forth Sunday of Advent happens to be the Christmas Eve this year It probably gives us a unique opportunity for more intimate reflection on the love of God for us The Gospel reading indicates very clearly that the child about to be born was Godrsquos gift to the world Luke is the evangelist of the poor and the marginalized from the beginning of his book he shows that Godrsquos sympathies are for the poorest and the most abandoned The people of Israel were waiting for the Messiah and imagined him to be strong rich and powerful Everybodyrsquos attention was on great cities or famous towns like Bethlehem the sea of the tribe of Ju-dah the birthplace of David where religion was still practiced in its purity and where learned mas-ters and teachers of spiritual life resided But the Lord does not make use of powerful men He picks out a small village of Galilee a place in-habited by country people despised by all since they were not pure Jews The priests in Jerusalem considered Galileans half-pagan Nazareth was so insignificant that its name never appears in the Old Testament The great message of salvation was not addressed to a great liberator like Gideon or a strong man like Samson to a woman a virgin Mary in her song of praise acknowledges her low-liness and that all that has been done in her is great powerful indeed The angelrsquos first words are ldquoRejoice you who enjoy Godrsquos favor The Lord is with yourdquo In the Bible when God has a message to give to somebody He generally calls them by name In our story the name of Mary is substituted by the expression by ldquoyou who enjoy Godrsquos favorrdquo
God changes names when He chooses people for special missions Maryrsquos Mission is to proclaim the wonderful work done to her by the loving God Mary is a sign of hope for the poor who should be
filled with joy because the Almighty will work in them great things too ldquoNothing is impossible to Godrdquo the passage concludes Perhaps we too feel unworthy to stand before God Let us not get dis-couraged It is worth noting that God always provide the means to help us with His grace to fulfil His
mission for ourselves and for our brothers and sisters
Jesusrsquo presence in the world challenges us to recognize and welcome Him into our lives and allow Him to guide our own lives in the pattern of His very own life Life lived in union with our Lord is joyful May the joys of this holy season fill you all with deep and lasting joy Merry Christmas Ku-

A young man was walking along the shore of a beach when he noticed an older man who kept bending down picking something up and then throwing it into the water As he drew closer the young man noticed that the older man was throwing starfish that had washed ashore back into the ocean As the young man ap-proached he said ldquoExcuse me sir may I ask what are you doingrsquo The older man said ldquoI am throwing these starfish back into the ocean It is low tide and they have all washed up onto the shore If I donrsquot throw them back they will dierdquo The young man said ldquoI understand but there are thousands of starfish on this beach You canrsquot possibly get to them all There are also likely thousands of others washed up on the beaches up and down this coast Donrsquot you know that you can possibly make a differencerdquo The older man smiled picked up a starfish threw it into the ocean and said ldquoI made a difference to that onerdquo (From Chicken Soup for the Soul Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen) Especially during this Christmas season do something that will make a difference to someone It can simply be a smile helping around the house shoveling a walk or driveway for a neighbor donating to charity helping someone in need financially if you can By making a difference to one person you can actually make a difference to many Rich
