Parish Mission Statement George Green Parish Center 113 North Geneva Street Ithaca, NY 14850 *** 607/273-6121 The Fourth Sunday of Advent The forth Sunday of Advent happens to be the Christmas Eve this year. It probably gives us a unique opportunity for more intimate reflection on the love of God for us. The Gospel reading indicates very clearly that the child about to be born was Gods gift to the world. Luke is the evangelist of the poor and the marginalized from the beginning of his book he shows that Gods sympathies are for the poorest and the most abandoned. The people of Israel were waiting for the Messiah and imagined him to be strong, rich and powerful. Everybodys attention was on great cities or famous towns like Bethlehem, the sea of the tribe of Ju- dah, the birthplace of David, where religion was still practiced in its purity, and where learned mas- ters and teachers of spiritual life resided. But the Lord does not make use of powerful men. He picks out a small village of Galilee, a place in- habited by country people, despised by all since they were not pure Jews. The priests in Jerusalem considered Galileans half-pagan. Nazareth was so insignificant that its name never appears in the Old Testament. The great message of salvation was not addressed to a great liberator like Gideon or a strong man like Samson, to a woman, a virgin. Mary in her song of praise acknowledges her low- liness and that all that has been done in her is great, powerful indeed. The angels first words are Rejoice you who enjoy Gods favor! The Lord is with youIn the Bible when God has a message to give to somebody, He generally calls them by name. In our story the name of Mary is substituted by the expression by you who enjoy Gods favor”. God changes names when He chooses people for special missions. Marys Mission is to proclaim the wonderful work done to her by the loving God. Mary is a sign of hope for the poor, who should be filled with joy because the Almighty will work in them great things too. Nothing is impossible to Godthe passage concludes. Perhaps we too feel unworthy to stand before God. Let us not get dis- couraged. It is worth noting that God always provide the means to help us with His grace to fulfil His mission for ourselves and for our brothers and sisters. Jesuspresence in the world challenges us to recognize and welcome Him into our lives and allow Him to guide our own lives in the pattern of His very own life. Life lived in union with our Lord is joyful. May the joys of this holy season fill you all with deep and lasting joy. Merry Christmas! Ku- wa na Krismasi yenye heri. Amani kwenu! Fr.
