MEMORIES AND DREAMS Throughout our lives, we retain the language and hab-its of our native region and family of origin. Should we return to our home after a long absence, we quickly revert to its familiar speech and practices. Our deep memory is reflected in old stories and words and speech patterns. This familiarity runs like an underground river and ac-companies us wherever we go. Not only do we remember, we are incorporated into and made part of a greater mem-ory. In remembering and recollecting, we are in turn gath-ered up and re-collected. Today we remember Mary, a small figure travelling the country roads to visit Elizabeth. All the great pro-nouncements and dreams of the prophets point to this time when the Lord’s words to Mary would be gathered and fulfilled. The memories of her people are alive in her, and memories of her nourish our own living faith.

Fourth Sunday of Advent

There is a spirit of audacity in our readings today. During a time of injustice and threat of invasion, the prophet Micah boldly announces that the God of insignificant Israel will raise up a leader from backwater Bethlehem, and this leader will bring justice and peace to the whole world. In the Gos-pel, Elizabeth and Mary, marginalized women, brazenly celebrate that their sons will be world-changing instruments of God. We further learn that this audacity is rooted in trust in God. The author of Hebrews describes the faithful obedi-ence of Jesus. Mary is shown as the exemplar of faithful trust in God. This is the way God often seems to work, in the ordinary and marginalized in our world. Those who seem weak have learned to trust in God’s strength. These have the audacity to become instruments of God’s peace

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In ancient pagan Rome, these days in mid-December were a time for general slacking off at work and far too much rejoic-ing. The period of leisure after the harvest and a whole cluster of pagan festivals were a force for the church to reckon with. The Saturnalia, breaking out on December 17, was a time of high living and loose morals. Christians were advised by their bishops to drop out of the mayhem and do some serious fasting. A famous church council at Saragossa in Spain made a season of fasting mandatory from December 17 to December 23, ex-actly coinciding with the Saturnalia. The bishops at that time were perhaps less concerned with preparing for Christmas than with resisting the kind of loose living going on. Modern times have restored a bit of the Saturnalia spirit to our culture, so that a general period of partying with a vague connection to religion is now upon us. How does a Christian keep balance? The practice of charity by remembering the poor in our gift‑giving, of hospitality in finding a place at our holi-day tables for the poor and lonely, and of daily prayer in the home and at church are great helps. Although Advent is not a penitential season like Lent, it is a time for making room in our lives for what matters most.

Nuestra espera forma parte de dos milenios de cristianos que buscan verlo llegar en las nu-bes.Desde el siglo VII la oración oficial de la Iglesia clama el retorno de Cristo con las exclamaciones llamadas las “Antífonas Oh”. Estas llaman a Jesús pidiéndole que venga bajo los títulos de Emmanuel, Sabiduría celestial, Señor de gran poder, Vara de Isaí, Llave de David, Alba de la luz, y Deseo y Rey de gentes, y algunos más. Estos refranes se usan aún to-davía hoy durante los días 17 al 23 de diciembre, y unidas en un acróstico latino forman las palabras ero cras (estaré mañana), como respuesta a la petición cristiana. Eventualmente en el si-glo X o XI estas antífonas fueron unidas en el canto gregoriano Veni, veni Emmanuel (Oh ven, oh ven Emmanuel).

PREGNANT WITH GOD Advent, as a time of preparation for Christmas, ech-

oes the pregnancy of Mary. Something is stirring within us, and we await the coming of Jesus. Although we the Church have observed Advent and Christmas many times, God is always offering something new to us. Like the angel asked Mary, God is always asking us to allow Christ to be born in and through us. Christ wishes to make himself at home within us, and increase his presence in our hearts.

Like pregnancy, at times God’s activity within us can be disorienting and confusing. The story of Elizabeth and Mary reminds us that however uncertain we may be about what God is up to in our lives, we have cause to re-joice—because God is indeed good, and will truly bring blessing to us. And through the fruit of our own wombs, God will bring blessing to the world.

Please continue to pray! The babies are counting on us! ~ Remember to pray daily for your spiritually adopted child and his/her parents. During your earthly life, this spiritually adopted child of yours is known only to God, but in the world to come, it is hoped that you will meet this child whose life was spared by your prayers and spend eternal happiness with him/her. Four Months: Well your little baby now weighs 6 ounces. They have fin-gernails, eyelashes, and their own unique fingerprints, which will remain unchanged until they die. Their taste buds are working and their sense of hearing is present at 14 weeks. There are no major bodily developments anymore. Your spiritually adopted baby is already well‐formed, internally and externally. All they need now is time to gain weight and grow strong.

FROM SCANDAL TO HONOR The meeting of Mary and Elizabeth follows a strong tradition of women in their culture, to come together to support each other during pregnancy. Mary likely carried a shadow of scandal in her pregnancy, since it began before her marriage. Elizabeth, having carried her own burden of social disapproval after many years without children, sees only cause for celebration. Eliza-beth sees beyond the social shame of Mary’s situation to ob-serve how God is working, and how Mary has accepted joining in this work. Unlike Elizabeth’s husband Zechariah, who thought it unbelievable that God could bring them a son, Mary believed the angel’s message. Elizabeth honors Mary, in part, for simply being able to imagine that God could do this extraor-dinary thing through her. Perhaps God had been preparing Mary’s heart throughout her young life, so that she could be fully receptive to God’s specific call when the time was right. Mary opened herself to an uncertain future, trusting that God would accompany her in the joys and sorrows of being the mother of Jesus.

Jesus Christ is born today, alive in our hearts. We celebrate this joyous day with gifts and

meals shared with friends and family, and I am truly blessed to be with all of you. I have been welcomed with smiles and blessings in my time of transition, and for this I am thankful to all of you. Jesus truly is present within you. Your faithfulness to Christ, your hope to understand

your calling as a Christian, and the loving interactions you have with one another bring joy to my heart. Knowing that you have a relationship with Christ and that you are praying for me

brings me an abundance of humility and thankfulness. I will continue to pray that all of you nurture your love for God, and share that love with all your friends and family. I am truly hum-

bled to be your Administrator and I will continue to do my best to make sure you all receive the greatest gift, eternal life. Thank you for your blessings, sacrifices, and commitment to our beautiful Church. Through you, Christ enters into the world. The Savior of the world is here,

rejoice and be glad! Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones, and a Happy New Year!
