Dear Friends and Family,

As we approach the Christmas season, I find myself feeling particularly thankful. Not only am I fortunate to be working with an incredible group of faculty and

staff, but I’m astounded at the many ways in which our school has been blessed. This year, God has truly shown us His guidance. God has blessed us with new physical construction, as well as a spiritual and academic blessing. The Terra Nova test results on page 6 speak for themselves. Our students are achieving during their years with us – and out in the real world. Additionally, they are willingly reaching out to the community to share their time, talent, and faith with others. This issue is packed with achievements from our students at every grade level. One of the highlights is seeing how our expansion has changed the lives of our students. The Commons area and the new classrooms have relieved stress during class changes and given our high school students a place to call their own. The additional classrooms have also allowed us to expand our curriculum. This expansion was only possible because of the faith of our families and local supporters. Now, during the Christmas season, I am especially thankful for the tremendous faith our students are showcasing. It’s visible during the Lower School Christmas Musicale as our youngest students express themselves as well as in the giving and outreach projects our high schoolers have initiated. Of course, these achievements, victories, and hard work would be in vain if not for the work of salvation done by Jesus Christ, who loved each of us enough to come and save us from our own devices. Now, that is a Christmas gift! I want to wish each of you a peaceful, joyous Christmas break, and I look forward to seeing you in January.

In Christ,

Kevin Fry

HOW WE STACK UP

Our students love to create! Whether it’s in the classroom as part of a STEM program or in the art room, KCA kids

enjoy the chance to express themselves each week.

As you can see from the photos on the left, students in every grade have the

chance to work with a variety of media. In the spring, a select group of high

school students are invited to submit their artwork to the ACSI Fine Arts

Festival. This is a wonderful opportu-nity for our high school art students to showcase their talents! Thank you to all of our supporters who continu-

ally ensure our art program remains an important part of the KCA curriculum!

Christmas Musical

Each December, KCA’s lower school students take the stage for a show-stopping Christmas musicale! This year’s production, Angelgrams, featured the story of two dueling newspapers – each one eager to get the scoop of Christ’s birth and print the news first. KCA’s sixth grade students worked hard to sing, dance and hone their acting skills during their rehearsals. Our first through fifth graders did a wonderful job of memorizing and performing over a dozen songs as the chorus!

Mr. Kevin Gardiner, KCA’s band and music teacher, enjoyed his first year as solo director for the Christmas pro-duction. He credits Mrs. Allison McGolrick for her advice and support and Lisa Benefield for her assistance with costumes, props, artwork, and coaching. Additionally, we were pleased to see so many students participate in the choreography and other “behind the scenes” work. Thank you to all who came to see the show and support our flourishing Fine Arts program!

TERRA NOVA TEST SCORESEach spring, our kindergarten through 10th graders take the Terra Nova standardized test. TerraNova is one of the most respected and widely used achievement tests, measuring mastery in the core subjects. Its design is fresh and user-friendly, and its content is current. Many schools choose to take the TerraNova test because it closely aligns with their curriculum and offers parents and teachers an in-depth review of each student’s abilities. Looking at the graph to the right, the “all schools average” is 50%. That means, the average student in America who takes the test will achieve in the 50th

percentile. The red bar shows other ACSI schools whose students have also taken the TerraNova exams. The tall blue bar shows KCA’s achieve-ments in each of the three main areas - reading, language, and math. As you can see, KCA students are not only meeting expectations, but rising well above them!

DUAL ENROLLMENTCAIRN UNIVERSITYwith

KCA is proud to offer our high school students dual enrollment through Cairn University, a fully accredited, NCAA DIV III institution. By partnering with Cairn, our stu-dents can graduate from high school with a head start on their college transcript. This program allows academically prepared students to take discounted college courses while still in high school. Because Cairn is a fully accred-ited, credits earned through the program may be used there or transferred to other accredited colleges and universities. Additional courses are also under review for college credit from Cairn University, and the cost is ex-tremely reasonable, saving families thousands of dollars in tuition funds.

A place to study. A place to catch up with friends. The

Commons is a gathering place for our high school students

with both indoor and outdoor gathering areas.

There’s nothing more exciting than watching a long-term project come to fruition! Not only did our new Commons give high school students an additional study space and a place to socialize, but it also provided three additional classrooms and a beautiful courtyard. So what’s different now that these new spaces are in use? As one student remarked, the extra space has eased congestion in the hallways during class passing time. The open areas has encouraged group study sessions and the chance to enjoy lunch without the company of younger grades. Additionally, the landscaped courtyard has been wonderful for social events and holding class outdoors.

Yet, this project benefits more than just the upper school. As our elementary and middle school student bodies continue to grow, so does our curriculum! Our

BUILDING A NEW SPACETERRA NOVA TEST SCORES

teachers are eager to add new programs and classes – and we need more space to do so. The new addition pro-vides three classrooms, meaning that several of the up-per school classes can move permanently into the new space and free up other rooms.

Making the Commons a reality involved a long, dedicat-ed planning process. As the funds were raised, this much needed addition was constructed and furnished. On Au-gust 23, the Sarah and Mike Patterson family (above cen-ter) were on hand to cut the ribbon that would open the new building. Actor, TC Stallings, (above left) was even on hand to add his own blessing to the space.

We are so grateful to the many families who opted to do-nate funds to make this project a reality. Thank you for your continued faith and support of KCA!

KINDER & PRE-K

Middle School

One of the highlights of the Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten years is the annual Thanksgiving Pow Wow. Our Pre-K students become Indians and our kindergartners dress up as pilgrims! After a special performance between the two classes, the group and their families share a special meal together. It’s a wonderful way to share the Thanksgiving message and showcase our students’ talents!

BLACK ROCK SCIENCE CAMPOne of the highlights of the middle school years is the annual trip to the Black Rock outdoor education camp in Lancaster County, Penn-sylvania.

Each year, a number of new stu-dents join our middle school grades in the fall. To help our kids develop camaraderie with one an-other, this three-day trip is planned during the first full week of school. New and returning students find a common bond with one another as they work to solve problems, enjoy games, and explore nature.

Ask any of the students who participate in our Black Rock science camp and they’ll tell you that there’s plenty of adventure to be had! Our 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students have the chance to explore over 100 acres of land and water-ways. Our middle schoolers have many hands-on opportunities to explore the wildlife, wade in the water, and try their hands at the ropes course. Educa-tors who truly enjoy what they do spend hours working with small groups of students to teach a variety of science courses in a fun and engaging way. All of the work done at Black Rock ties back to nature and the incredible creations around us. KCA teachers partner with the Black Rock staff to provide devotion times and help students connect the nature they’re learning about back to the ultimate creator, God. Students and teachers alike get to know each other on a new level, which helps to foster a better relationship as the school year begins! We are thankful to the many parent chaperones who join us each year, bunking with the students and ensuring everyone’s health and safety. If you have a middle school student attending next fall, we hope you’ll consider joining us for this 3-day adventure!

Did you attend our community carnival this

year? We offered over 30+ attractions, carnival games, prizes, and more!

Each year, our Parent Teacher Fellowship Board enjoys plan-ning a variety of events for students to enjoy. The carnival is a great activity for Southern Maryland families – from the amazing food and desserts available to the rides and games, there is truly something for everyone! Additionally, it’s one of the best ways for families who have never visited to explore our grounds and see how we like to have fun!

ON CAMPUS FUN

FUN AT THE CARNIVALThanks to all of the students who volunteered to help run our carnival rides and games! The highlights of this year’s carnival included a zip line, rock climbing wall, multiple thrill rides, bounce houses, obstacle courses, pony rides, and plenty of carnival games and prizes. We also enjoyed hosting the DJs from STAR 98.3 as they broadcast live once again from our campus. Plans are already in the works for our 2017 fall carnival. We’ll be collecting stuffed animals again next year, so if you have any you’d like to donate, please feel free to bring them to our main office!

FINE ARTS KCA’s Voice of Hope Ensemble performs on stage with Annie Moses Band!

When popular folk musicians, The Annie Moses Band, went on tour in Pennsylvania in October, a group of talented students from The King’s Christian Academy was with them! After receiving the first place score at the ACSI Fine Arts Festival in March, the band reached out to ensemble director,

Ensemble News

Mrs. Amy Gass. Members of the school’s Voice of Hope ensemble were offered the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform six songs on stage with The Annie Moses Band.

KCA’s Voice of Hope ensemble traveled to Pennsylvania to sing in the group’s October 20 concert at Lancaster Bible College. Vocal ensemble director, Mrs. Gass, talks about her students: “I am extremely proud of this group. We were blessed with this incredible oppor-tunity to perform on a professional stage and worked very hard to learn these concert songs as well as prepare for other performances this year. Everyone was thrilled to be a part of this show!”

KCA received the “Superior” rating at the ACSI Fine Arts Festival, placing above numerous oth-er choirs in the northeast. The group performs at several community and school functions throughout the year, including military events and church gatherings. Students must audition to become a part of this competitive group, which is a for-credit elective at KCA.

The Annie Moses Band, pictured left, is well-known for their fiery string playing and soulful renditions of beloved American songs and have been entertaining audiences for over a decade.

In late November, our lower and middle school musicians shared their talents with an apprecia-tive group of parents and fellow students. They played a number of traditional Christmas songs as well as some fun 80s rock music!

Come January, all students in the 3rd through 6th grade will pick up their recorders once again! Remember to bring yours in after the Christmas break ends.

Would your student be interested in exploring a new instrument? For more information on the string club or music lessons, please contact band director, Kevin Gardiner at 301-994-3080, or visit KCA’s website at: www.KCAeagles.org/band

LEADING WORSHIP

One of the best parts of Grandparents’ Day is the opportunity to invite special fam-ily members into our hallways. These honored guests travel from across the country to see their grandchildren! After a special breakfast in the classroom, students in every grade put on a wonderful assembly filled with recitations and music.

What better way to end our program than to hear how KCA has shaped the lives of our students. Seniors, Kailynn Perkins and Ben MacDonald gave eloquent speeches and shared how KCA, its fac-ulty, and fellow students have impacted them.

Our Praise Team led the assembly in several worship songs, and our award-winning Voice of Hope ensemble (shown below) blessed our attendees with a great performance. We are so proud of students’ ability to lead others in prayer and worship.

One of our goals is to continue to institute additional technology throughout our school building. Many classrooms are now outfitted with SMART boards, and iPads are available to every grade!

At KCA, it doesn’t matter if you’re in Pre-K or 12th grade – there’s nothing more fun than rounding out your week with a pep rally in the gym, a high school retreat, or a good old fashioned class competition! This fall, we cheered on our volleyball and soccer teams as they made their way into the playoff season. Each pep rally featured games for every grade level, competitions, and lots of cheering! Look for more fun in late January when we kick off our KCA Spirit Week!

In late October, the high school girls took the field for a close game of football – all in the name of breast

cancer awareness. Funds raised from the game were given to a faith-based organization called Pink Pearls of Hope, which focuses on educating women of color who are at an increased risk of developing breast can-cer. Thanks to all who came out to support this effort!

FOCUSDid you know that KCA has a robust homeschooling program for families choosing to pursue the majority of their education from home? In addition to receiving in-class coursework, home-schooled students may participate in KCA social activities such as banquets, field trips, and student events. Kandyce Blocker, pictured on the right, is a homeschool junior who takes a calculus course with Mrs. Pentermann. Her younger sister, Adirah, is also homeschooled and enjoys music class once a week with Mr. Gardiner. Both girls are accomplished gymnasts and Kandyce participates with KCA’s varsity cheerleading squad. If you would like to learn more about our homeschool program, please contact Admissions Director, Barbara Mashtare, at 301-994-3080.

On December 10, KCA took four teams to the First Lego League Southern Maryland Tournament. We had three new teams made up of 4th and 5th graders as well as our middle school team, which had a mix of new students as well as those who were experienced with Lego League ro-botics. One of our 5th grade teams stayed in 2nd place in the robot run most of the day, but dropped to fifth in the last round. Our middle school team, pictured above, was awarded one of the top awards – the Robot Design Award! Our 4th grade team scored really well overall, but did not place in a particular category. Overall, a lot was learned and much fun was had, but we have more to come. The 7th and 8th grade students will now begin focusing on VEX IQ and gear up for their competitions in January. Later they will focus on the Quadcopter competitions, which will take place in the spring. A few of our very experienced 7th and 8th grade students plan to compete with our high school VEX team, which will have the bulk of its competitions in February. Congratulations again to our middle school team on a job well done at the December tournament!

SEASON RECAP

VOLLEYBALL

LEAGUE

KCA’s middle school program had 20 girls come out and join the team. Ten of these girls were new to the game this year. They worked hard all season to become solid in their passes and serves. The Team Captains, Kylie Keen and Rayann Choporis (with Kate Wagner assisting) were veteran players who had been involved with volleyball since their 6th grade year. They were great in helping our new players gain confi-dence on the court and encouraging the team to play their best!

Our Varsity 1 team had an amazing season! Not only was the team 14-0, but to make things even more spectacular, we were MISAL League CHAMPIONS!! All 13 ladies showed tremendous team work. Coach Ardella Fry stated, “I was so proud of every one of my players. The leadership skills that the senior girls showed throughout the season was an honor to the school and to God!” We are extremely proud of our 2nd Team All League players, Emily Nevala and Xela Fry as well as our First League players, Sarah Long, Heidi Harris and Carmen Doig. The league voted Carmen Doig as ALL-STAR LEAGUE MVP! The team chose 2 Tim: 1:7 as their verse: For God has not given us a spirit of Fear, but of power, love and self discipline. Our varsity girls truly had no fear on the court!

6

GIRLSSOCCER

20

The girls’ soccer team had a solid 2016 season! Despite a variety of in-juries, each of the girls on the team played hard throughout the fall. What sets our soccer program apart is the fact that both middle and high school girls play on one team. Our middle schoolers worked very hard to practice at the same level as their upper school teammates. Though there were occasional setbacks, each of the younger players were driven to improve their game.

Though the season has just ended, we are already gearing up for next year! We foresee that our current juniors Joanna Choporis and Rachel Nevala will be great leaders for the team. It will be sad to see our seniors from this year - Ally Puckett, Katerina Stedman, Kathryn Funk, and Kailynn Perkins - leave us at the end of the year. Ally Puckett, in particular, has been a wonderful mentor for a lot of the girls on the team. Her kindness, knowledge of the game, and hard work will be missed! Coach Kelsey Reichard summed up the season by saying, “God has blessed me with the opportunity to coach such hard working, Godly, and wonderful girls. I cannot wait to see what he has planned for the team next year!”

BOYS’ SoccerThe boys had a successful season that concluded with a trip to the state playoffs. Several of our top players were recognized at the All Conference level. Our All Conference players are nominated by coaches from each of the schools KCA competes against. It is a real honor to be selected, as it means that coaches from other teams recognize not only a student’s athletic ability, but their good sports-manship on the field.

Our Pre-K through 2nd grade students had the opportunity to learn more about community workers this year. Members of our local sheriff and volunteer fire department visited KCA and invited students to explore their tools of the trade. Afterward, students had the opportunity to explore the fire truck and police car. Of course, we couldn’t let our special guests leave with out a gift. Students generously donated treats and other non-perishable goodies for our local fire department to enjoy! We are so grateful that these community heroes take time out of their schedules each year to visit our campus and share important information with our students. We look forward to seeing them next fall!
