/// THE TECHNICIANS’ CONFERENCEDerek Pearson, the editor of both Dental Practice and The Dental Technician journals, has been in publishing since 1987 and has been the assistant editor on these dental titles for four years.

By Chairing the conference Derek is hoping to be presenting an independent series of presentations and case studies on the latest trends, techniques and technologies that are vital for lab owners and technicians who wish to grow their businesses, and perhaps survive.

With pressure mounting on the UK’s dental technical profession to offer a viable alternative to overseas competition, and in some cases the actual role of the technician changing within the dental team, it is essential for technicians to stay abreast of developing technologies. New techniques and materials allow laboratories to produce precise restorations faster and with greater aesthetic quality. There may presently be a lull in cosmetic dentistry thanks to the current economic situation, but when people once again start to enjoy financial stability, laboratories will be called on to match patient demand for better and more realistic prosthetics, and the aim of The Dentistry Show’s Technicians’ Conference will be to help laboratories meet that demand.

/// FACING THE FUTUREFew would disagree that dentistry is facing some tough challenges ahead. The grim economic climate, a raft of regulatory requirements and new government contracts along with an increasingly competitive market are but a handful of pressures.

Amidst the uncertainties, there is something that can be guaranteed - the challenges and changes facing dentistry and every member of the team will be top of the agenda at The Dentistry Show in March.

Dr Amarjit Gill is chairing the new Future Dentist programme and he’s expecting a very lively and thought-provoking debate involving some of the industry’s big hitters; “There’s the new government contract and how attractive that will be, there’s the emphasis on oral health and prevention. With the private dentistry market predicted to be worth an extra £1billion within the next year, these are exciting times for all dental professionals and that’s what The Dentistry Show’s all about.”

The Dentistry Show is aimed at the entire dental team and offers a wealth of education, discussion, live theatre demonstrations and verifiable CPD over two packed days.

With the private dentistry market predicted to be worth an extra £1billion within the next year, these are exciting times for all dental professionals and that’s what The Dentistry Show’s all about.”

/// TWO DAYS FOR THE ENTIRE TEAMThe Dentistry Show which runs over two days in March at the NEC in Birmingham promises a stimulating range of debates, presentations, hands on learning, live theatre demonstrations and hours of verifiable CPD.

Because The Dentistry Show is aimed at the whole team and also covers the business and management side of dentistry, it is an invaluable chance to focus on the future and prepare for the exciting and challenging times ahead.

Panel sessions and programmes have been designed specifically for dentists, nurses, hygienists and therapists, dental lab technicians and practice managers. Dr Michael Cahill, Director of the award winning Cahill Dental Care Centre in Bolton, Lancashire, who will be chairing one of the debates says, “Everyone in the team forms key relationships with patients and has a role to play in the health of those patients whether it’s offering advice, providing treatment or running the practice smoothly.

Dentistry is quite rightly no longer about the glory of the dentist, but about overall health so the skill set and CPD required is constantly changing. Good conferences can be immensely valuable … and that ripples through the practice.”

Despite the raft of experts, big hitters and new faces, The Dentistry Show is no mere talking shop and is one of the most exciting dates on the dental profession’s calendar.

Dr Michael CahillAesthetic Dentist

“Advances in materials have revolutionised bonding and composites, patients want resto-rations, not cut teeth and we understand so much more about marrying appearance and functionality that also means considering perceptions of perfection and attractiveness.”

/// BRITAIN’S GOT TALENT!The Dentistry Show has a reputation for its wide appeal - not just to all members of the dental team, but also because it covers both the business and clinical aspects of dentistry – essential in the current economic climate.

Chris Barrow is chairing the Dental Business Conference which he says will be a “Britain’s Got Talent for Dentists!”, focusing on innovations that will impact upon the business in key areas such as marketing, customer service, management systems and leadership. “ When I arrived in dentistry 17 years ago, none of this mattered but it does now. Dentists are competing with each other, with big corporates, high street retailers and luxury websites. People could be spending their money on school fees, holidays and HDTVs instead of dentistry so dentists need to be ready which means crystal ball gazing, not navel gazing. The Dentistry Show is all about the future, not the past.”

The Dentistry Show promises two days packed with stimulating discussion and debates, live theatre demonstrations, education including verifiable CPD and much more, for every member of the dental team.

“…showcase what we think are going to be innovations in the dentistry business over the next year or so and look at key areas such as marketing, customer service, management systems and leadership. When I arrived in dentistry 17 years ago, none of this mattered but it does now and The Dentistry Show is all about the future, not the past.”

/// A MILESTONE FOR NURSES2012 is the half way point in the first five year cycle since GDC regulation of dental nurses. To mark that milestone The Dentistry Show in March has much on offer for nurses and the rest of the dental team, including hours of verifiable CPD!

Sam Ball who chairs the BADN National Education Group is leading the programme for dental nurses that will focus on the core topics stipulated by the GDC including infection control and decontamination, radiography safety, legal and ethical issues and medical emergencies; “ Obviously getting hours of CPD in the bag is incredible as it’s all free and the opportunities for learning are great but The Dentistry Show is also a brilliant way to integrate the whole team – dentists, hygienists and therapists, nurses – that’s really impor-tant and of course it’s useful for catching up with old friends and making new ones.”

/// Anterior interior all-ceramic restorations: The art and science of exquisite aesthetics.

The cosmetic aspect of dentistry is an area of the market that continues to grow at a rapid rate and offers opportunities for practices to maximise their income potential.

The technology and issues surrounding an increasingly customer-led treatment is constantly advancing with higher demand to create perfect results.

Dental Business Conference The Dental Business Conference is focused on matters concerning principals and practice managers. The conference programme highlights essential legislation, methods of running a profitable practice and marketing, the latter of which also addresses new approaches such as social media. Sessions include:

/// An overview of 2012 and what is to come

/// 7 easy steps to growing the hygiene department

/// How to add £10,000 extra per month to your turnover from facial aesthetics.

Hygienists and Therapists SymposiumThis year, due to high demand, the Hygienists and Therapists Symposium has been increased to include key subject matter, such as:

/// You and your anxious patients (inhalation sedation, scope of practice and you).

/// Infection prevention & control – hand hygiene and personal protection for hygienists and therapists.

/// Digital photography & radiography, building a case study.

Sally Reid of the British Association of Dental Therapists (BADT) says, “The Dentistry Show will give BADT an opportunity to speak with our members, outline the benefits of employing a therapist in practice and update ourselves on new products.”

/// A MUST FOR HYGIENISTS & THERAPISTS The Dentistry Show is renowned for its appeal to the whole dental team and offers live theatre demonstrations, debates and discussions on the key issues facing the profession and the chance to earn CPD points.

Mhari Coxon, is chairing the session for hygienists and therapists that will look at their role in prevention and implementation, non-surgical aspects of advanced periodontal treatment, dealing with nervous patients, and those suffering from xerostomia; “This is the first time that there will be a live theatre for hygienists which is very exciting. We’ve got some fantastic speakers - new faces, new voices and we’ll be looking at the key role therapists and hygienists have to play in relationships with patients, and in being at the hub of the practice.”

With greater emphasis placed upon prevention and oral health education, that role will increase significantly and indeed by show time, the GDC may have decided on the direct access application from hygienists and therapists.

The Dentistry Show offers two days packed with information, education, live demonstrations and stimulating conversations for anyone who cares about dentistry.

Mhari CoxonHygienists & Therapists Symposium

“ We’ve got a really impressive calibre of speakers, new faces and voices and a real cutting edge – the live theatre for hygienists is ground breaking. Hygienists and therapists are at the hub of practices, play a key role in patient relationships and retention and with the emphasis on prevention, that role will increase.”

Derek Watson, Chief Executive of the Dental Professionals Association (DPA), says, ”The Dentistry Show has become an established exhibition for not only trade but also exchanging ideas. It is a premier occasion to gather the opinion-formers of the dental industry and gain knowledge from them. “Personal contact is important to business, as there is limited time to often meet with colleagues and associates. The show is a fantastic opportunity to do that and develop professional relationships. ”The DPA is the only association to be open to all members of the dental team. The Dentistry Show allows us to promote our association’s benefits and talk to a wide variety of dental professionals.”

“With pressure mounting on the UK’s dental technical profession to offer a viable alternative to overseas competition, and in some cases the actual role of the technician changing within the dental team, it is essential to stay abreast of developing technologies”

Gemstar have been supplying the dental market for over 10 years with their unique towel dispensing systems.

At the touch of a button steaming, hot, luxury towels are dispensed for the patient. Offered post treatment to comfort and refresh and for removing material (alginate) from around the mouth.

Having listened to feedback and seen a growing demand from practices focussing on the patient experience Gemstar have now launched a compact, stylish machine with a built in UV Sterilisation System.

Emma Harrison, Director said, “While Dental Practices loved the concept of the towel dispenser our previous model proved to be on the large side and the issue was around where to house it within the surgery.

The smaller version has had a fantastic response with a lot of demand for the built in UV Sterilisation System”.

December 2011

The Dentistry Show (Friday - Saturday, March 2nd - 3rd, 2012) really isn’t one to miss. Expecting its largest attendance ever at the NEC Birmingham, the show will provide an exceptional occasion to network with thousands of dental professionals and provide opportunities and solutions to benefit the entire practice.

The award-winning show is one of the UK’s fastest growing trade events and is the dental market’s first buying show in the annual calendar.

Free to register, this year’s show presents a world-class faculty of speakers who will deliver more than 90 verifiable CPD hours of conference sessions on the latest products, technologies and legislation to assist in the smooth running of the practice for all members of the team.

The Dentistry Show features six conference streams

focussed in each member of the dental team:

/// NEW! Future Dentist

/// Aesthetic Dentist

/// Dental Business

/// Hygienists and Therapists Symposium

/// Nursing Network

/// Aesthetic Technician

Each of the conferences are designed to deliver the most relevant and exciting experience for their audience. This is an unmissable opportunity for dental professionals of every background to network with their peers and industry experts, as well as source the best materials, solutions, training and advice.

Meanwhile, the exhibition has expanded dramatically yet again for 2012 with almost 300 (290 at the time of print) exhibitors as The Dentistry Show cements its position as the UK’s fastest and most exciting trade show conference and exhibition in the UK. Exhibitors and sponsors making their debut this year include Colgate, Dental Buying Group (DBG), GSK, Skillbond, Molar, Enlightened Smiles, Oral B and J&S Davis.

“There’s a real buzz of excitement among both dental teams and the supplier community on the back of the show’s storming success and attendance growth last year,” said show director Chris Brown.

“We’ve continued to invest in the education programme adding an exciting new conference, created new partnerships within the profession, expanded our marketing programmes and grown the exhibition side of the show dramatically.

“Delegates are responding to the refreshing, lively format of the show, the quality of the clinical and professional education in the lecture halls as well as the quality of both the exhibitors’ offers and depth and breadth of the growing supplier base on the trade floor,” added Brown.

The excitement builds…Dentists and practice teams register in record numbers for the most anticipated dental event of the year.

Implantology given sharper focus as ADI partners DS12.The Dentistry Show is this year supported by a new partnership with the Association of Dental Implantology.

Given the increasing demand for more education around implants from the dental community, it was a natural step for The Dentistry Show and the ADI to come together, says Dentistry Show Marketing Manager Lucy Pitt.

The Association of Dental Implantology (ADI) focuses on implant education and encourages scientific research to improve the standards of implant dentistry, offering support to all members of the dental profession.

Kelly Emerson, Education Manager for (ADI) UK is looking forward to the event, “We will be promoting courses and support for the whole practice team,” she says, “and focusing on how dentists can start performing implants. Also the opportunity to network is high and with such a large number of dental professionals expected this year, The Dentistry Show is the best place to do it.”

New ‘Future Dentist’Conference for 2012 ShowFuture Dentist is a new conference where leading figures will share their strategies for the future, while key policy makers will explore what lies ahead for the dental profession.

Among the figures taking to the stage on Friday 2nd March will be Chief Dental Officer Barry Cockcroft, the GDC’s Chief Executive and Registrar Evelynne Gilvarry, and the BDA’s immediate Past President Amarjit Gill.
