The Wallflowers at FNDC2008

FNDC2008 is proud to present The Wallflowers in concert on Friday evening, June 13. This Grammy award winning group is best known as part of the mid-90’s revival of roots-rock and for it’s “son of a legend” front man, Jakob Dylan. Although a true lyricist like his father; his band, the Wallflowers, is more musical-ly influenced by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, who they opened for on tour.Known for the multi-platinum release, Bringing Down the House with singles “6th Avenue Heartache”, “One Headlight” and “The Difference” the group won Grammys for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group in 1998. They followed with the release “Red Letter Days” in 2002 and most recently with “Rebel, Sweetheart” in 2005.

Letter from fNDC2008 Program Chair

It is with great pleasure that I invite you to join us at the 2008 Florida National Dental Convention, the official meeting of the Florida Dental Association. With the theme, Dentistry for the Mind, Body and Soul, this year’s meeting has continues its new direction in both format and continuing education.

In speaking with colleagues all across the U.S. regarding continuing education meetings, a constant theme continued to emerge. Both dentists and staff preferred taking time out of the office for relaxation and personal growth rather than registering for another dental lecture. For that reason, we decided to offer courses for personal growth and enrichment along with our usual superior course offerings in clinical education.

This year’s meeting offers numerous presentations geared towards the body and soul. These include courses on nutrition, general health issues, oral health issues, and personal well-being. In addition, we have added numerous workshops. Dentists are seeking more hands-on training and I think you will find several courses that will pique your interest. New this year, is a panel discussion on how to participate a dental missions trip. This format will allow anyone interested in missions work to learn the basics.

As always, the FNDC committee continues to work hard to provide you with dynamic and innovative educational opportunities. Please join us in Orlando in June.

Beatriz e. terry, DDS, mSfNDC 2008Program ChairmaN

Letter from the geNeraL ChairPerSoN

As General Chairman of the Committee on FNDC, I am excited to tell you about FNDC2008. The committee has endeavored for more than three years to bring you this exciting array of educational opportunities on the cutting edge of dentistry. Each year we diligently search for the best and brightest

speakers, educators, and entertainers in order to stimulate your thirst for dental knowledge.

This year’s program chairperson, Dr. Beatriz Terry, has developed a unique program that will fulfill every aspect of not only dentistry, but also personal enrichment and growth. Her slate of lecture programs is not only second to none, but also offers over 30 hands on workshops to give you the necessary skills that can be taken back and used immediately in your office. You and your staff will find multiple opportunities to enhance all aspects of your practice.

This year’s Friday night concert will be our best ever! Our headline group this year is the Wallflowers with lead singer, Jakob Dylan. They performed at the Sports Illustrated and Yahoo! annual meetings and received rave reviews. You can hear some of their music at www.floridadental.org/pro/fndc. Get your tickets--this is going to be a great evening of fun.

We have an enormous group of exhibitors and vendors who come to our meeting to show you all the latest in technology and materials for your practice. It is a one stop shopping experience for all that dentistry has to offer. Plan on visiting the exhibition hall while at FNDC2008 and I know you won’t be disappointed.

Please join me at the beautiful Gaylord Palms Hotel and Convention Center in Orlando this June and enjoy the great meeting and all the excitement the FNDC2008 has to offer!

Our world today is fraught with uncertainty. People are less trusting, so it requires more effort to win a patient’s confidence and respect. Drilling and filling skills do not necessarily make a successful dentist. The chair-side and desk-side manners displayed by the dentist and the staff can make or break a doctor-patient relationship. It’s what you say and how you say it and it’s what you do and how you do it that create an atmosphere of credibility. The world of computerization has further distanced us from our child and adult patients to the extent that the healing touch is almost non-existent in many practices. Utilizing his live action videos and movie clips, Dr. Berman will explore a wide range of office situations, clinical and personal, which will ring all too familiar. Extensive emphasis will be placed on the administration of local anesthesia...the defining moment between dentist and patient. A most entertaining educational experience that will add a new dimension to your professional and personal lives and prompt your patients to say “thank you.”

The message may be “excellence” or “comprehensive dentistry.” It may be a message of “caring” or “compassion.” But if the team does not appreciate the message or have the skills to convey fundamental information to patients, then the practice’s core message is no more effective than a note stuffed in a bottle and thrown into the sea. The chances that the message will be received and acted upon in a timely manner are slim. This interactive, “hands-on” workshop gives attendees the verbal skills and other communications techniques to communicate with patients in an effective, systematic, and consistent manner. Using written exercises, group participation, and small group discussion, the facilitator will lead the group to a much clearer understanding of how the practice can effectively communicate with patients on a daily basis.
