Letter from the Pastor
On February 23, 2019, a special General Conference of the United Methodist Church will meet. The General Conference consists of elected delegates, half laity and half clergy, from United Methodist churches throughout the world. This is the only body that can speak on behalf of our denomination. The primary purpose of the conference is to address the issue of human sexuality and our stance in the Book of Discipline, our guiding policy.
In the coming weeks, I will have some opportunities for anyone to learn the process and the numerous possibilities of what may happen, including an explanation of a statement by the Council of Bishops to be released later in July.
Until February, all United Methodists are being asked to help the process by Praying Our Way Forward.
All United Methodists are invited to:
1. Engage in a weekly Wesleyan 24-hour fast from Thursday after dinner to Fri-day mid-afternoon. Those who have health situations causing food fasts to be unadvisable might consider fasting from social media, emails or another daily activity.
The
Connection
FOLLOWING CHRIST FROM CITY CENTER
2. Pause and pray for our church’s mission and way forward daily for four minutes from 2:23 through 2:26 a.m. or p.m. in their own time zone OR at another time. This is because the Special Session of General Conference will be held February 23 through February 26, 2019.
3. Pray using a weekly prayer calendar that will be posted on the UMCPrays.org website from June 2, 2018, through the end of February 2019. The calendar will list a unique cluster of names each week. The names will balance United States bishops and delegates with Central Conference bishops and delegates. It will also include General Secretaries, Commission on a Way Forward members, the Commission of the General Conference and the staff of the General Conference.”http://www.umc.org/who-we-are/bishops-the-upper- room-launch-phase-3-of-praying-our-way-forward
Please join me in prayer for our church and our denomination.
Grace and Peace,
James

STAT FACTS Lee Robirds, Congregational Nurse
It’s hard to realize that we are only at the be-ginning of our summer, and it will be even hotter and more uncomfortable in the upcoming months.
Just remember a few key things: stay hydrated, wear sunscreen when outside and reapply every 2 hours, and use insect repellant when necessary. These three simple actions will go far in keeping you healthy.
Thank you, my church family, for the generous monetary gift I received when I retired in May. I have enjoyed being a Kaky to my grandchildren, visiting our vacation home in Tennessee, and volunteering at church during VBS. We will be purchasing a swing for the porch in the mountains and taking a trip at the end of the summer.
Thank you so much for your love, sup-port, generosity, and prayers through many years of service and now into retirement. I look forward to seeing you as a member of the congregation.
May God bless each of you,
Kathy Kelly
.
John McFadden, Director of Music Ministries
July is a pretty quiet month in church life. A lot of folks are out of town on vacation. Because of this, there will be no choir practice for the month of July. Please consider joining us when we re-sume practice in August.
On Sunday, August 19, we will ‘Worship at the Lake’ as we have done for the past several years. (We will have an 8:30 service here at Main Street on that day as well.) It is a different worship service in a dif-ferent place with a cov-ered dish lunch. It is easy to see God’s handiwork out at the lake. If you are able, plan to join us for that special service.
On Saturday, August 25, Greater Greenwood United Ministries will hold the third annual Music for Ministry fundraising event. GGUM helps a lot of peo-ple in our community and Music for Ministry is one of their major fundraisers for the year. Our choir has gladly participated each year, and we are looking forward to this year as well. You’ll hear more about that event in the future.

Many many thanks to everyone who helped make our Bible School a huge suc-cess. We had 78 children and almost 50 youth and adult helpers. Shout out to Hannah Thompson and Josie Shirley for helping direct. Our outreach project this year was Healthy Learners, and all items were greatly appreciated. Lisa
