Welcome to our annual special edition Newsletter featuring photos and results for the Fine Art Woodworking Competition at the Orange County Fair. We hope you enjoy it. Also, this month, we are having our veneer work contest at the general meeting of the OCWA on September 6th. First place; $100.00, Second place; $75.00, Third place; $50.00, and Honorable Mention; $25.00. We hope to see a lot of pieces in the contest. SOME PEOPLE HAVE SOME SPLAINING TO DO At the fair there was a conspicuous absence at the booth of one or our long time members, and a fair booth mainstay, and after the last couple of months I was a little bit concerned, ok, maybe a lot concerned that maybe attrition was raising its ugly head again. As it turns out, to my relief, I guess, he had a run in April 2016 Page 1 Volume 35, Issue 9 September 2018 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE with a switched off table saw. Now, just because a table saw is switched off doesn’t mean that the blade has stopped turning, so in the process of cleaning up the dust on top of the saw he came into contact with the aforementioned still turning blade. Oops. Thus an excuse for not showing up to the fair. I could understand it if this guy was new to woodworking, but he taught woodshop for thirty years, which just goes to prove my assertion that a machine doesn’t care if you have thirty years, or thirty seconds of experience, so please keep your focus when you’re in your shop, because one false move can ruin your whole day, or possibly change your life. SHOW AND TELL Aside from the veneer contest we will also be having a Show and Table, so be sure to bring something in, take a ticket, wait for the drawing, and walaa twenty- five bucks in your pocket. Can’t beat that. There will also be a silent auction where our members can sell stuff, and give a 25% donation to the club. UPCOMING ACTIVITIES

No club meeting was scheduled for August because the Tustin Senior Center was closed for its annual refurbishment and staff holidays. Our regular meetings will resume on Thursday, Sept. 6, 2018.

SEPTEMBER TOY SPECTACULAR:

The September meeting will be presented by the club’s highly talented Toy Markers. If you have ever thought about becoming more active in the

toy program or learning how to make quality, heirloom wooden toys, this program is for you. Our own Richard Kalman will serve as Master of Ceremony, and many of our most prolific and gifted Toy Makers will be present to show you their toys and how they make them. The program will feature an extended show-and-tell by the toy makers and an extra long break so that you can meet and learn from these expert toy makers.

ANGEL CITY LUMBER TOUR:

At 10:00 AM on Saturday, September 15, 2018, Angel City Lumber will host a tour of their urban lumber processing facility. We can expect to see a demonstration of the portable saw mill, slab preparation and curing facilities and all the operations of the lumber mill. Brady Zaitoon has informed me that Angel City is setting aside some green-wood cutoffs especially for our visit.

A number of our members are planning to meet at the Tustin Community Center and car pool to the demonstration. Details will be announced at our Thursday, Sept. 6 meeting. Angel City Lumber is located 30 miles North of the Tustin Community Center just off the I-5.

SAWDUSTTOY STORY

Once again we had a very hot day and we still had a great turnout. Ed had his crew assembling 40 plus Keepsake Boxes and putting the hinges on the ones we assembled last month. It takes three workshops to get a completed box. They get assembled,

then Ed takes them home and cuts the lid off and machines the hinge groove in them. The second workshop the hinges are installed and the box is sanded. The third workshop the finish is applied and then sent to the warehouse. Our usual spraying crew was down one member since Len pulled a muscle in his back and John had step up and fill in. When John returned the spray unit to Len he said it will take a few days for his right arm, hand and shoulder to get back to normal after three hours of spraying. This toy making is not all fun and games, for some of us it is work.

The OC Fair was a great showcase to tell the public about our toy program and the toys we had at the Fair allowed both the attendees and the members at the booth to interact and have a great time.

Be sure to attend the September 6th Woodworkers Meeting. The featured speakers will be selected toy makers with their special jigs and set ups to make their favorite toy. You will be amazed at the lengths some of them go to in making so many toys of a particular style.

Our next Toy Workshop will be September 8th, 2018 at Bill’s house from 9am to noon.

OC FAIR MESSAGE

The OC Fair was a great showcase to tell the public about our Association, the toy and pen program and the toys and puzzles we had at the Fair allowed both the attendees and the members at the booth to interact and have a great time.

I am asking all of us to think about coming up with some new puzzles for next year’s fair. We have had the same games and puzzles for 6 years now and the fair public is on to us. Ross Gilroy gave us two new puzzles this year and they we great and we had a great time with them. So check out Google, YouTube and the old stand by a book. This sounds like a great contest theme for May of 2019.

Just for your information. John R. Butler (the turner) got to meet John R. Butler (the flute maker) at the fair on pick up day. Each had a good laugh and a story to tell for many years.

Contrary to popular belief of many fair goers the drawer in Frank Andrews dog tribute cabinet did not contain the cremated remains of the dog on the door. The drawer was so precisely made it did not appear to be a drawer and fooled may people. Some comments were, “what a lovely tribute”, “the dog must of been special” and one was” that’s gross”.

PEN PROGRAM – SUPPORT OUR TROOPS

REMINDER: The Challenge for September will be, once again, turning pieces with open air like Don Winan’s cars - or turning any open air blank (turning while the tool is cutting mostly air or any project that involves turning while the tool is cutting 50% or so air) - or turning a pen or pens.

Hello Pen Turners

Hope you're catching up on your pen turning and ready to turn them in at our

September 6th meeting.

Anyone who made pens or gave away any to veterans at the fair, please report those numbers to me for a current tally.

Have a good rest of August and looking forward to getting into the swing again.

Keep turning and remember “Never Write With an Ugly Pen!” Gary Phipps, Chairman, Support Our Troops Pen Program

OC Woodworkers, I would like to thank you for your donation of handmade pens. I received handmade pens from the South Orange County Veteran Center that were then distributed in a Military Re-integration Retreat that took place this weekend. The marine couples were very grateful for the pens and were able to use them to take notes on information that will help them to reconnect after several months deployment. Attached is a picture of the pens that were distributed during the retreat.

In addition, I would like to see if it would be possible to collaborate and getting your amazing pens out to more marine service members during these retreats. We are planning on running these marriage retreats for every unit that returns from deployment. If it is possible, I would love to distribute your pens during these retreats. Again, I am very grateful for the efforts that you are putting into saying thank you to our service members. If this is something you would like to be involved with, here is my contact information. Either way, thank you for what you are doing.Dylan Bender, [email protected] August 27, 2018
