A Great Fire Walk To Remember!!!

On Friday 24th February 2017, all of the Year 2 classes had an amazing opportunity to visit St Paul’s Cathedral and carry out the walk down Pudding Lane to retrace the journey of where and how ‘The Great Fire of London’ took place.

The children travelled by tube to St Paul’s Cathedral, where they took part in some role play about how the fire started, who wrote the diary and how many people were involved. They children also got an opportunity to climb up to the top of the dome in St Paul’s. They really enjoyed it, as they ex-citedly reported, “we climbed up 200 stairs and climbed back down again it was amazing !”

The children learnt about what happened to St Pauls and London after the fire and about the famous Christopher Wren who designed St Pauls after the fire.

Dylan from 2NW stated, “ my favourite part of the trip was when I saw the dome because it was high and it was very exciting and very beautiful.”

The walk down Pudding Lane made it real for the children and they all said what a big adventure they had. It was a very enjoyable day overall for all of the Year 2 children.

Coffee Mornings

Lynn (our family support worker) is holding a coffee morning on Friday 31st

March. After dropping your child at school make your way to the parent room (next to our Nursery)

for a chance to grab a coffee, meet other parents and talk to our new school nurse and representa-

tives from Plaistow Library.

Badminton shuttle stars

The Southern Road badminton teams attended the first ever badminton competition at Newham Lei-

sure Centre during March. All of the children were excited to put their skills learnt during PE lessons

to use in an intra-school competition. It was a huge success, and all of the teachers commented on

how well everyone's badminton skills had improved by the end of the day. It was very pleasing to see

some excellent team work and communication skills from both Southern Road teams.

Southern Road started strongly, winning their first four matches with ease, relaying on their

knowledge of the game, skill and anticipation to ensure that the shuttlecock beat their opponent at

every opportunity.

It was an excellent afternoon for all and a good starting point for the next badminton tournament in

the summer.

British Science week at Southern Road Primary

school.

10th-19th March

At Southern Road we have been celebrating the fascinating, entertaining and engaging world of Sci-ence. To celebrate the event we invited a workshop in from Science Boffins for Year 2 and 4. This workshop brought together some visual effects from the film industry with a very scientific slant which had their jaws dropping with amazement. First, they had electricity pass through their bodies in order to light a fluorescent tube and saw a miniature lightning strike. They also got a high voltage shock on their noses! Moving on from Tesla coils we talked about polymers and how they are used on film sets to make noxious slime. The technique was fascinating and the children were able to take their slime home at the end of the day. ‘The electric shock on my nose felt tickly, 'said Mohammed 2AM. ‘It was amazing that we got to make our own slime and take it home, ’stated Khadija 4TB.

All week the children have been producing amazing Science work around this year’s theme,

change. Year five looked a chromatography, while Year one and two looked at chemical changes

when making butter and bread. In Year six they looked at the adaptation of worms, while Year

three looked at natural changes. Year four made lava lamps using; oil, water, food colouring and

an Alka-Seltzer tablet.

The Winter Games comes to Newham

During February, Southern Road attended one of the largest team events held in the school year –

The Newham Winter Games. We entered 3 teams into 3 different sporting activities: netball, boc-

cia and tag rugby. Southern Road pupils showed excellent team spirit and sportsmanship during

the whole visit. Mr Permaul was particularly impressed with the pupil’s interaction with rival

teams before, during and after each game. The children showed that they can win, lose and draw

and still remain positive and cooperative.

Towards the end of the tournament (each team having played 5 games) everyone was working

out some great game tactics and showing signs of great team leaders for the future.

Well done to everyone involved.

Year 3 dance spectacular!

30 year 3 children travelled to Cumberland School, having been selected to push aside the

competition for an intra-school competition.

The event began with many nervous looking faces, hoping to perform their best when it mattered.

After an intense first hour of dancing through two physically demanding stages, the children waited

patiently with many crossed fingers to find out if they made it through to the finals. These anxious

seconds felt like a lifetime, eventually the result was read aloud.

Southern Road made it into the final of the competition with squeals and beaming smiles spread

across the hall.

Southern Road Primary School finished in an amazing 2nd place (missing out on first place by the

narrowest of margins) out of 20 schools that competed, making Mr Permaul incredibly proud of

their effort and achievement.

Brilliant effort year 3!

Champion Olympian Visits Southern Road with

‘Make a Splash’ Double commonwealth champion James Goddard visited the school on the 3rd March.

James began his visit with a whole school assembly which had a strong focus on commitment, perseverance and

resilience.

Kitted out in his full team GB outfit, James engaged in discussion with lots of curious children in the hall, sharing

stories of his hopes and dreams as a child which resulted in great success as an adult.

James proudly brandished his winning gold medals to a gasping crowd of children, whilst fully kitted out in his team

GB outfit and kindly allowed a few children to wear his medals and fleece.

The children were enthralled from start to finish and left with an added love of swimming and valued the im-

portance of commitment in all walks of life not just to sport.

After the energetic assembly, 20 selected children were treated to a very special swimming lesson in our very own

pool by James himself. Children from various year groups competed in swimming races and relays using their ability

in front crawl, backstroke, butterfly and underwater swimming. They pushed themselves to the limit in each race

and proved just how beneficial the pool has been for our children, with James and the instructors commenting on

how much the children have improved in such a short period of time.

James finished the day with autograph signing and a whole bunch of tired but elated children and he left the school

with a broad smile.

‘’Thank you so much for inviting me to Southern Road Primary. I had a great time and the school had the most

enthusiastic children out of all the schools I’ve visited.’’

A wonderful comment to end a wonderful afternoon.

World Book Day

This year was the 20th anniver-sary of World Book Day, and on Thursday the 2nd March 2017 the whole of Southern Road Primary came together to appreciate the joy of reading and a good book. The main aim

of World Book Day is to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading. At Southern Road we also celebrated another exciting anniversary in the form of the 20th

anniversary of the first Harry Potter book - The Philosophers Stone. As usual the playground was full of wonderful costumes and amazingly creative interpretation of this year’s theme, Witches, Wizards and magical creatures. We had a slight change to the school timetable this year which saw Maths lesson be-come potions classes, English lessons become a charms class and the afternoon was a mixture of lessons in: the care of magical creatures; the history of magical wizards and witches and even some Quidditch. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents for the time and effort that went into the cos-tumes and to the teachers for providing an exciting day of book related activities. The day consisted of: magical creatures being created and lots of potions being concocted; as well as lots of playing with words to generate our own magical spells and mystical wands being created to cast them with. It was a great success and we have heard lots of children commenting on their excitement to read more of the Harry Potter series and other magical books. Hopefully you got to visit the book fair in the KS2 hall which we were able to generate over £200 in com-mission to spend on fantastic new books for the school. We also raised over £250 from your generous donations, which is being donated to Book Aid, who work in partnership with libraries in sub-Saharan Africa providing books, resources and training to support an environment in which reading for pleasure, study and lifelong learning can flourish. Don’t forget to use your £1 book voucher to either purchase one of the special world book day £1 publi-cations or to put towards another book of your choice Thank You again for your continued support. Mrs Colkett.
