Polar vortex changes to solar vortex (fingers crossed).Today, as I write this message, it’s a balmy 40 degrees outside and partly sunny. This clearly is a sign of good things to come! I forecast a warm up in our future – within the next three to six months.

If anyone can forecast a real warm-up, it’s Kare 11’s Chief Meteorologist, Belinda Jensen. It was great having her and anchors Diana Pierce and Julie Nelson at The Shops at West End for this issue’s cover photo shoot. The three women gave us a glimpse of how they balance their busy lives in-front of and behind the camera.

Speaking of news makers, have you been to Yard House? The newest addition to The Shops at West End opened on March 13 with its 140 draft beers at the ready. If you haven’t been yet, come check it out. You’ll be impressed by its expansive menu selection and wonderful hospitality.

Perhaps you’ve heard, Bonefish Grill - an American casual dining seafood restaurant - is also coming to our shopping center. The popular venue will feature a delicious menu of both surf and turf wood-grilled items.

We are excited for what the change in season has in store at The Shops at West End. Our boutiques are blooming with the hottest must-haves for your warm weather wardrobe. In this issue we include a guide to help you navigate through spring and summer occasions, including: apparel, accessories, and great gift ideas.

Exciting things are happening in 2014 as we celebrate our fifth birthday! At the start of this year, The Shops at West End’s PAY IT FORWARD Patrol rewarded shoppers with gifts on site and online as our way of thanking you for your patronage. Plenty of great free events are also lined up for this summer. And, this fall, don’t miss out on more fun things happening for our birthday. We hope you’ll continue to make The Shops at West End your shopping, dining and entertainment destination!

Enjoy the sun!

What’s neWBeer lovers unite!Yard House is sure to be a hit in the Twin Cities market.

If you’re a draft beer aficionado, we have the place for you. The Shops at West End’s newest restaurant, Yard House, opened its doors mid-March with 140 tap beers ready to fill your pint glass.

When plans for the area’s first Yard House were announced last fall, people began buzzing about their excitement for its arrival. Michael Landstad, senior property manager at The Shops at West End, has heard numerous people express their fondness for the restaurant. “People have told me they’ve been to a Yard House while on vacation in Southern states. They’re excited not only for the beer selection, but equally so for the food and ambiance,” said Landstad.

Yard House is the creation of founder and entrepreneur Steele Platt, who came up with the concept shortly after relocating from Denver, Colorado to southern California in the early 1990s. Platt, along with partners Harald Herrmann and Carlito Jocson, wanted to create a restaurant that would offer one of the largest selections of draft beers, a diverse menu of American fare, and play a heady selection of classic rock music on a state-of-the-art soundsystem.OnDec.7,1996,theflagshipYardHouseopenedalong the Long Beach waterfront in southern California.

The restaurant took its name from the 3-foot-tall glass containers originally designed in Great Britain used to hand stagecoach drivers after a long journey by horse drawn carriage. Each Yard House location features a center island bar and an endless fleet of tap handles ranging from classic lagers to more obscure ales. The glass-enclosed keg room is essentially the pulse of the operation, housing as much as 5,000 gallons of beer at a time. Three to five miles of individual beer lines stretch overhead from the keg room to the island bar, maintaining a constant temperature of 34-36 degrees and keeping the beer consistently fresh and perfectly chilled for every pint. Guests can sip their favorite draft beer from the popular half-yard, traditional pint or six pack sampler.

The award-winning and extensive menu of American fusion cuisine features more than 130 items including appetizers, salads, pastas, sandwiches, street tacos, grilled burgers, individual-size pizzas, seafood, steaks and ribs. The Kids Klub menu includes fresh-to-order favorites including a selection of healthy items for the Yard House pint-size guest.

The lively environment is created by colorful abstract artwork, classic rock music and flat screens in every direction showcasing the day’s news and sporting events.

“I’m excited to have Yard House here,” said Landstad. “I have no doubt it will become a favorite place to head for your weekly happy hour.”

Brush Studio at The Shops at West End is the perfect place to enjoy a fun night out while painting, drinking, eating and, of course, socializing.

Brush Studio provides a stress-free environment for anyone looking to be creative – for those who have never picked up a paintbrush, as well as seasoned artists. Guests enjoy an afternoon or evening of entertaining art instruction while enjoying the company of friends or family. Daytime “open painting” options offer skilled

and amateur artists a chance to explore their creativity on their own, no instruction provided.

Studio owners Jodi Karn and Jean Forbes have backgrounds in both small and large business environments, each having owned other businesses in their past. Forbes also gained extensive marketing experience while working for a Fortune 500 company. At this new juncture in their lives, both wanted to create a business that would promote creativity and encourage people to try something new.

A Unique Brush with

ART

“We’ve created a unique and fun destination for our patrons, one we hope will have them wanting to come back again and again,” said Karn. “We hope our guests leave a class with a positive sense of self, knowing they have accomplished something they never thought possible – creating a fabulous piece of art for that blank wall in their house.”

Classes at Brush Studio are typically $35, which includes everything you will need: paint, brushes, canvas and professional instruction. A Brush Studio artist leads all guests through the process of creating their masterpiece. Online registration makes it easy for attendees to see which painting they would like to create and sign up quickly to reserve their space.

In addition to painting, Brush Studio offers a unique selection of craft beers and a wide variety of wine along with small appetizers that are all available for purchase.

“Brush Studio is the perfect place to come to relax, enjoy a drink, and nosh on appetizers while experiencing a unique brush with art,” said Forbes. “Best of all, no painting experience is necessary.”

Join Brush Studio for an evening of entertaining art instruction while enjoying your favorite beverages and the company of those close to you. Who knows, maybe you’ll meet some new friends along the way as well.

Barre gets my heart rate up,

which is different than yoga. With yoga, I had to do separate cardio classes as well.

– Aruna Nookala

ABOVE: Shivani, Anu, Aruna and Asha Nookala

The Nookala Barre QuarTeTWhen the Nookala family moved from Woodbury to Golden Valley nearly two years ago, they wanted to find more ways to come together as a family. Parents Marthand and Aruna, and their youngest, Shivani, a high school sophomore, all live in their new home, while oldest daughter, Anu, lives in downtown Minneapolis, and middle child, Asha, goes to college out of state.

The women of the family had always been active with their own fitness routines, but not really together as a group, which came to change last May and continues on today.

Aruna met Haute Barre owner Amber Eggert at a WomenVenture networking event. She had read about barre classes in the newspaper and thought it sounded challenging. Remembering Amber’s new studio, she decided to take a free trial class at Haute Barre with her daughters on Mother’s Day last year.

“I like to support women business owners,” said Aruna. “So Haute Barre was a good fit for us.”

None of the Nookala women had ever taken a barre class, but they quickly fell in love with it and attend evening and weekend classes regularly. Aruna, Anu and Asha all have monthly memberships, while Shavani opts for a 10-class pass since she’s a typical busy teenager.

Each of the women likes barre for both similar and different reasons. A yoga fan in the past, Aruna has found that barre is great for working all muscle groups. She likes that the stretches are longer and leaner than yoga. She feels she’s getting a more complete workout.

“Barre gets my heart rate up, which is different than yoga,” said Aruna. “With yoga, I had to do separate cardio classes as well.”

Anu, who is a Twin Cities physician, likes that Haute Barre class schedules aren’t just for people who work 8-5 hours. And, even though she lives in downtown Minneapolis, loves how convenient it is to easily get to The Shops at West End.

Having primarily done spin classes in the past for cardio, Anu likes the challenges of barre. “I get a whole body workout with barre,” she explained. “And surprisingly, the Haute Rejuvenate class is actually pretty relaxing.”

Barre is the first group fitness class Shavani has taken. A previous student of ballet, she likes that barre has a lot of ballet influence to its techniques. One of her favorite Haute Barre instructors is Jarrod Boltjes who is classically trained in ballet.

In addition to the great workout, the quartet of Nookalas loves the studio’s expansive class schedules. “What’s nice about Haute Barre is the flexibility,” added Aruna. “You can always find a spot and it feels very personalized.”

“I like that you can sign up for a class directly using the online registration form,” said Asha. “They’ve made things very accommodating.”

Right after our interview, the three daughters hopped right into instructorBoltjes’HauteBurn75class,whileIsnappedsomephotos and chatted briefly with Haute Barre founder Eggert.

“I’m always impressed by this family’s incredible positivity and strength,” said Eggert. “They came in at different levels and abilities, which is exactly why barre is such a great option for all ages.”

‘Barre’ none, this is proof that fitness and family truly can go together pointed toe-to-pointed toe (er, hand-in-hand).

PaNek ChIlDreN learN ‘MoTher kNows BesT’For the Panek family of Mahtomedi, sports are in their blood. Dad T.J. played football throughout high school and in college at St. John’s University, and mother Nikki excelled at volleyball and softball in high school. So it was inevitable that their three children would inherit the family’s athletic genes.

Josh, 16, and younger brother, Zach, 15, are both active in football and lacrosse at Cretin-Derham Hall High School. The youngest, Sydney, 12, is establishing herself in hockey and soccer, pretty much year-round.

With active lifestyles come healthy appetites and the challenges of eating right on the go. To help with top performance, they follow strict dietary guidelines and stick to regular workout routines.

It was mom Nikki who made it her job to find ways to help her family stay energized and nutritionally balanced for the busy student athletes’ lives. She found Nutrishop at The Shops at West End.

The goals for the boys were to put on mass for football season, increase athletic performance, and build strength while aiding muscle recovery. They need to build lean muscle mass while still remaining flexible. Nutrishop owner, Cody Haislet, analyzed the

individual needs of the two teens and helped develop a nutritional program that would help them accomplish their goals. He set them up with a list of products to take at different intervals throughout their day.

In the off-season, the boys train at a sports performance gym. During this season the boys take Nature’s Fuel, Fruits and Greens at the startoftheirday;VP7proteinandBCAASportprior to their workout; and post-workout, Mass Complex and Glutacor which helps with muscle repair and recovery. If they have a game, they increase their calorie intake with extra servings of Mass Complex and BCAA Sport.

The Mass Complex helps build muscle mass, and BCAA Sport and Glutacor helps increase their athletic performance.

For young Syndey, it’s less about building muscle mass, but more about adding extra fuel.

“I’ve seen amazing results with not only the kids’ performance and muscle growth, but also their attitude,” said Nikki. “They have the energy and get the nutrients their growing bodies demand.”

“It’s important to maintain healthy eating habits along with taking supplements. We use the shakes as a guide to enhance our lifestyle and produce healthy future habits,” added Nikki.

Nikki says that a healthy diet is key to all stages of life – from young multi-sport athletes to adults hoping to age well. It gives individuals the tools needed for success, whatever their fitness goals may be. She calls it a transformative lifestyle.

While some may wonder about the demands parents put on young athletes, Nikki is quick to point out: “We don’t push our kids to ‘be the best’ by any means, we just want them to enjoy the sports that they’ve come to love. They challenge themselves to excel. And, if they can stay healthy during the process, with less injuries, that’s what matters.”

“More kids are playing year-round sports, going to school, and working. The balance of commitment, expectations, and nutrition are an extreme

challenge with young athletes. As a parent, and for the athletes, the balance of all these elements is crucial and at times stressful. No parent, coach, or athlete wants to experience fatigue mentally or physically,” said Nikki.

While Nikki herself used to enjoy team sports, now being fit for her is for personal reasons. “I work out for general health and to feel good,” said Nikki.

Working out also helps Nikki herself maintain a healthy weight – which can be a challenge since she lost her thyroid to cancer years ago. “Without a thyroid, my weight fluctuates quite a bit. It makes it hard for me to either lose or gain weight,” she explained.

NikkiusesVP7proteinasasnackbetweenmeals to meet requirements for daily health and wellness. It also supports her exercise routine of high intensity intervals, strength training, cardio and yoga. Nutek Nature’s Fuel, Nature’s Fruits and Nature’s Greens supply her with daily requirements of vitamins and minerals and increases energy.

“Nutrishop products have really made a difference for us. And, so has their student discount card,” Nikki said laughing. “As a parent with three pending college tuitions to cover, that’s something I have really come to appreciate.”

When it comes to sports nutrition, this family hits it out of the park.

We welcome them into our homes. We refer to them like longtime friends — “Did you see Bel’s coat last night?” We rely on them to tell us what’s important.

They’re Diana Pierce, Belinda Jensen and Julie Nelson of KARE-11 and, in 2013, all three hit major milestones in their broadcasting careers.

Pierce, who came to KARE in 1983 when the station still went by the call letters WTCN, celebrates 30 years at the station — 20 of which were spent anchoring the evening news with Paul Magers. “It’s so rare in the TV business for someone to stay in one place for so long,” said Pierce, a California native and Boston University grad who began her broadcasting career at a 500-watt radio station in Massachusetts and worked at stations in New Hampshire, Virginia and California before coming to the Twin Cities. “They say once people come here, they don’t leave. I guess I’m one of those people!”

“I grew up watching this market,” said Jensen, a St. Croix, Wisc. native who interned at KARE in 1988 under former KARE meteorologist Paul Douglas,

graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and worked in TV in Salt Lake City before being recruited by Douglas to come to KARE in 1993. Jensen, who has served as KARE’s chief meteorologist for the past seven years, wears a number of hats at the station — from “token female” on Minnesota Bound to host of both the Saturday morning show and Grow with KARE. “I have been afforded the opportunity to have a huge variety in my 20 years at KARE,” she said. “None of these programs existed before me. It’s been really fun to be part of something so creative.”

“KARE has a phenomenal legacy and such good people,” said Nelson, an Eau Claire, Wisc. native and Indiana University graduate who worked in Indiana, two stations in Kentucky and KSTP here in the Twin Cities before coming to KARE in 2003. “The tone of the newsroom fits with my personality,” she said. “The people at KARE are genuinely good people who care about what they’re covering,” said Nelson.

Community Ambassadors All three credit their longevity at KARE to the station’s dedication to the community. “Everyone who works at the station is connected to this community in so many ways,” said Nelson. “We remember that our sources are people away from the story. There’s a level of respect.”

“Our call letters are a value statement,” said Pierce. “We really do care — with a C. It’s been great to be part of an organization that promotes those values.”

“We’re all out and involved,” Nelson said of herself and her coworkers. “A lot of times our editorial meetings are just us talking about what we’re seeing in our communities and our schools.”

From hosting fundraisers to starting their own charities, these women have taken KARE’s value statement and run with it, proving to be true philanthropists.

For more than 10 years, the family-friendly Diana Pierce Family Mile has encouraged families to walk or run one mile as part of the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon. “The one thing I am truly passionate about is trying to get kids to understand that they can be active outdoors,” said Pierce. “I love that in this community being outdoors and being active is embraced.”

“All of the philanthropy that goes on in this state is remarkable,” Jensen said. “When you’re comfortable on a stage and able to communicate a message, that’s a gift you should share. It’s a good way to give back and pay it forward,” she said of emceeing galas.

“You really get to choose what you want to be involved in,” said Nelson. “We have a platform and we’re encouraged to take that platform. It’s part of the job and I love that it’s very important to management that we’re involved in the community,” said Nelson.

Being involved also helps you know your audience. “By getting out and talking to people, I’m able to mentally have an idea of who I’m speaking with,” said Pierce. “When doing the news, it’s just me and a camera, but by being welcomed into homes and speaking to so many people, I can get that idea of who I’m talking to and who cares about these stories.”

This past November, KARE held an all-day Food Fight fundraiser for Second Harvest Heartland. The idea? The four evening KARE personalities — Nelson and Jensen along with Randy Shaver and Eric Perkins — had to “fight” against one another for food donations at four different locations throughout the Twin Cities. The idea fit the foursome perfectly.

“We love to give each other a hard time,” said Nelson. On a cold day right before Thanksgiving, they didn’t expect much turnout, but people came in throngs and the crew was outside for upwards of 14 hours. In total, 861,000 pounds of food were donated, along with a number of checks from companies. “It was amazing to see the way the community responded,” said Nelson. “It was one of those days that you go home and say ‘I love my job.’”

Camera Ready Pierce, Jensen, and Nelson gush over the opportunity to have their hair and makeup done for today’s shoot, which they’ll keep for broadcasts to come later in the day. Unless it’s sweeps, the women dress themselves and handle their own hair and makeup.

Jensen arrives from a reading group at her first-grade daughter’s class. In a ponytail and casual all-black outfit, you wouldn’t guess that this woman is one of the most watched people on Twin Cities televisions every night. “I’m a tomboy at heart,” Jensen said. “All of this hair and makeup, it’s not really me.”

And for news personalities in the Twin Cities, sometimes you have to be “on” even off camera. “It can be hard if you’re having a bad day at the grocery store with your kids,” said Jensen of being recognized in public.

But all three maintain that they’ve been welcomed with open arms in their communities. “Everyone is so nice and kind,” said Nelson. “I really think that everyone should get this kind of encouragement in their jobs. I get really sweet emails and everyone is really respectful.”

Like Family “When you join KARE, you’re joining a family,” said Nelson, speaking of both her coworkers at the station and the families who watch the nightly broadcast.

“I’ve had the best co-anchors,” said Pierce, who now shares the spotlight with Pat Evans. “All of the guys have a funny streak in them. We’re always joking that the real entertainment is behind the camera — but it wouldn’t all be appropriate for TV!” she says with a laugh.

Jensen and Nelson have grown close in the 10 years they’ve been together on the evening news and often can be found after the 10 o’clock show in the parking lot chatting about the day. “We’ll talk about what happened that day, what balls got dropped, what’s happening with our kids,” Nelson said. “She’s one of my best friends. It’s been priceless to be with someone who understands the craziness of our jobs.”

She used Supershine Light (lightweight moisture and heat protectant) through the ends, then sprayed Volumista at the base, and Gel Serum throughout to create that weightless volume. Nelson used a medium sized round brush, and dried section by section. She finished the style with Dry Texture spray and Superfine Hairspray.

For Jensen, the friendship is equally as important. “I don’t know what I’d do without her,” she said.

Both women have two grade-school-aged children, which can make family time hard. When the 6 p.m. show is a wrap, both do their best to rush home. “My dinner break is like a fire drill,” said Nelson, who spends the almost three-hour break like any parent: picking up kids, getting dinner on the table and helping with homework.

For Jensen, the day can take even more unexpected turns if weather strikes. “I try to schedule the best I can, but if there is severe weather, it’s all out the window,” she said. “The weather is different every day, so my job can be different every day.”

Both credit KARE for helping them make it all work. “Our news director understands how important it is to Bel and me

to have that check-in at night,” Nelson said. “Not every news director is like that.”

“You can’t do it all as a working mom,” said Pierce, who has a grown daughter.

“There is no perfect scenario,” Nelson said. “There are certainly moments when it’s heartbreaking. If I didn’t love my job so much, it’d be harder.”

“We’re at work when most people are at home: during dinner and right before bed,” Jensen said. “Sometimes you just have to be present and that’s the one thing about this profession: You can’t be.”

But the schedule, sacrifice and hard work is worth it. “We’re welcomed into homes and people trust us to tell them what they need to know. I don’t underestimate that or take that lightly,” said Pierce. “This job really is a privilege.”

Do you have a tough time finding something to wear when you gaze into your closet? Is there a designated area

in your closet for those pieces that you’re guaranteed to wear? You just may have too many clothes that don’t work for you.

Stacey Finnegan, owner of MINQ boutique, says people typically only wear approximately 35 percent of the clothes they own. The remaining 65 percent are either uncomfortable, don’t fit, or are out of style. So why do we hold onto so many

clothes that take up precious closet space?

“People keep certain clothes for sentimental reasons; gifts, family heirlooms, special occasions, something that may fit again. They also tend to gravitate toward their comfort zones and buy multiple variations of the exact same item type. Think 15 black tops in your closet and you will understand what I mean.” said Finnegan. “Some people tend to keep two, three or more varying sizes in their closet either hoping or fearing they will eventually get to that certain size again.” Stacey goes on to point out that if we get back to that size we were in the past, those precious garments we are gripping onto will no longer be in style and it will be time to replace them anyway.

Sometimes emotional attachment makes it hard to get rid of clothing that will never be worn again. It might have been a present from a parent, or something you’ve had since college. Herein lies the challenge. Going through your entire wardrobe can be a daunting task. But it doesn’t have to be. Finnegan’s new service, MINQ Closet Curators, can come to the rescue.

On a snowy day this past February, Finnegan offered her services to a busy South Minneapolis couple, Adam

Meyer, owner of Studio M Architects, and his physical therapist wife, Kari Prestholdt. These busy parents of two knew they needed assistance pairing down their wardrobe.

To begin the consulting session, Stacey interviewed the couple to understand their personal style and what their lifestyle demands were. She wanted to understand how they shopped, what their ideal wardrobe would look like to support and

enhance their way of life. This dialogue brought out fun and interesting shopping habits between the happy couple.

“She’s the frugal one, I like to shop,” said Adam. “However, we don’t just buy something with the goal to wear it once.”

Adam likes to assist in helping his wife to show her true beauty. He also helps guide her to looks that are on top of fashion trends. “He’ll direct me to the more trendy, cute outfits which is great,” said Kari.

When Stacey and the couple began evaluating the closets, they removed everything and sorted the items into piles: a pile for keep, consign, donate and tailoring. While some items held sentimental reasons, Stacey was able to direct them as to why they should or shouldn’t keep them – such as a dress from high school or a T-shirt from college.

“If I wore it in college, does that mean I have to get rid of it?” questioned Kari, to which she got a friendly, yet challenging smirk from Stacey. Needless to say, those items went into the donate pile.

Adam’s Lifestyle•Tends to wear the same thing

all day. Doesn’t have a lot of clothes just for business or just for evening. “I don’t want to have two separate clothing lifestyles,” he says.

•Dresses to the client he’s meeting with.

•Doesn’t wear suits very often.

•Likes to wear slacks, shirts, sweaters.

•Owns only one pair of black shoes.

•He doesn’t attend a lot of formal events, unless it’s an award ceremony or company-sponsored event.

•Tends to buy clothing in “reward” mode.

Goals:•Wants a mix and match

wardrobe.

•Needs assistance determining which pieces are missing from his current wardrobe.

•Wants to feel trendy and hip, but comfortable and not too edgy.

Kari’s Lifestyle•Dresses business casual;

usually more professional than not.

•Always needs “sensible black shoes” for work.

•When she shops she’s usually “on a mission” for a specific need.

Goals:•What should she get rid of

and what should she keep?

•Needs more “date night” clothes.

•Wants to determine how to pick out sexier and more flattering clothes.

“I suggest asking yourself some important questions when considering an article of clothing’s fate,” said Stacey. “Does it fit? Is the color right? Is it outdated? Do I like it? If I tailored it would I wear it?”

“I also like to ask if they’ve worn it in the past year. That’s a very good indication of whether or not they’ll wear it in the future,” added Stacey.

Stacey recommends that after completing the item sort, individuals should face all hangers with the hook facing out, opposite to how we normally hang our clothes. Then after wearing an item once, hang it back in your closet the traditional way with the hook facing the back of the closet. She encourages her clients to try to stretch yourself and wear things that you have not yet worn every time they go into their closet. Then after 3-4 months assess your closet and the items that are still hung in reverse that you have not yet worn. If the items are in season and you have not worn them, it is unlikely that you will wear them going forward and they should probably be removed from the line up to make room for other fabulous clothes.

Throughout the sorting process, Adam and Kari were encouraged to try on pieces where the fit was questionable, which helped answer some valuable questions. “I don’t know that I’ll wear these, they are not really comfortable,” said Kari.

“That’s a good sign that you shouldn’t be keeping them and taking up valuable closet space,” replied Stacey.

One final piece of advice Stacey offered was get rid of bulky wooden hangers. “Wooden hangers look lovely but if you have a small closet they

take up a lot of space.. Thin velvet hangers will help to create more usable space” said Stacey.

At the conclusion of the sort, the couple had three large garbage bags of clothing ready to be donated to a local clothing charitable reseller, a pile that was to be sent to the tailors, a new awareness of what items they could mix and match that they already had, a short list of key pieces they could add to their wardrobes and much more room in their closets to find the clothing that they’ll actually wear.

After all was said and done, Kari and Adam were very happy with the results. “The good thing about this process is it makes you do it. It feels good,” said Kari. “I didn’t realize how many clothes I had that didn’t fit.”

Additionally at the end of the session, shopping foe Kari was so pleased by the results she exclaimed: “Look at all this space. I’m excited to go shopping!”

Mission accomplished.

If you’re a true die-hard griller, you’ve likely been grilling through the snow and polar vortex. For many though, spring is the first time the grill will be uncovered after its winter hiatus. Here are grilling tips and recipes courtesy of Shops at West End merchants.

Great Grilling from the Experts Omaha Steaks knows grilling practically as well as they know their cuts of meat.

“T-bones, ribeyes and porterhouses sell well in summer since they sizzle on the grill,” said Omaha Steaks manager Steve Clem. “Our Italian sausages, gourmet hamburgers, steak burgers, gourmet franks and bratwursts are also popular.”

Clem also told us to tell readers about their popular 50% off sales. The next one is June 20-22. He also says to watch for sales around big holidays such as Memorial Day and the Fourth of July.

When you complete your purchase at Omaha Steaks be sure to ask the cashier for their Great Gathering Guide and Cookbook – it’s full of great steak preparation tips and recipes. You can also find over 100 great grilling recipes from the professional on-staff Omaha Steaks chefs at omahasteaks.com.– Omaha Steaks

There’s a Space for That Shops at West End restaurants and common spaces are perfect places to host groom’s or rehearsal dinners. They offer just enough privacy while still being secluded or stuffy. For bachelor and bachelorette parties, Toby Keith’s private party room is directly next to the stage which makes for a fun place to celebrate while enjoying live music. The spaces are also great for birthdays, retirements, reunions, corporate meetings and Bar and Bar Mitzvahs. And to make the night complete, four St. Louis Park hotels are within walking distance to crash after the fun night out. You can inquire about private rental spaces directly from most of the venues’ websites.

Garlic & Chile-Stabbed T-Bone Steaks with Grilled Corn RelishRecipe by Omaha Steaks

STEAKS: – 4 Omaha Steaks T-bone Steaks – 6 cloves garlic cut lengthwise into thick slivers about 3/8 inch long

– 1 serrano chile, seeded and cut lengthwise into thick slivers about 3/8 inch long

– Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

RELISH: – 1 red bell pepper – 4 ears fresh sweet corn, husked – 3 tablespoons olive oil, divided – 1/4 cup diced onion – 3 tablespoons diced sun-dried tomatoes (packed in oil)

– 2 scallions, sliced – 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lime juice (the juice of one half of a large lime)

– 1 tablespoon sherry vinegar – 1/2 tablespoon minced marjoram – Salt, to taste

PREPARATION To prepare the relish, roast the bell pepper on the grill and let steam. When cool, peel, seed, and dice the pepper, and place in a mixing bowl. While the pepper is cooling, brush the corn with 2 tablespoons of the oil and grill over indirect medium heat for about 15 minutes, turning frequently, until lightly browned on all sides. Remove and, when cool enough to handle, cut the kernels from the cobs and add to the mixing bowl. Heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil in a skillet and sauté the onion over medium-high heat for 3 to 4 minutes, until soft. Add the sautéed onions, sun-dried tomatoes, scallions, lime juice, vinegar, and marjoram. Season with salt, and toss to combine.

Using the tip of a sharp paring knife, make incisions in the steaks about 1/2 inch deep. Insert the garlic and Serrano slivers into the incisions, making sure they are embedded beneath the surface of the steaks. Season with salt and pepper and bring the steaks to room temperature. Grill over direct medium high heat for 5 to 6minutespersideformedium-rare,7to8 minutes for medium, or to the desired doneness. Serve with the relish.

Grilled Meatballs with Barbecue SauceRecipe by Nordic Ware

– 2 pounds ground beef – 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce – 1 cup rolled oats, processed to fine crumbs

– 1 egg, lightly beaten – ½ cup onion, finely diced – 1 tsp salt – 1/3 cup barbecue sauce – ½ tsp pepper – 4 cloves garlic, minced – 1 cup barbecue sauce, for serving

Thoroughly combine all ingredients in large bowl. Form into 12 equally sized meatballs and place into Nordic Ware’s Meatball Griller cavities (Griller available at large retailers or at Nordic Ware Factory Outlet in St. Louis Park). Grill over medium heat until cooked through, turning once, about 15-20 minutes. Heat additional barbecue sauce and serve with meatballs.

BURGERS – 1/2 cup minced onion – 2 pounds ground lamb – 1 egg – 1 cup bread crumbs (panko) – 1 clove garlic, minced – 1 teaspoon salt – 1 teaspoon black pepper

FILLING 4 1/2 teaspoons salt

– 1 tablespoon ground black pepper – 4 ounces soft goat cheese – 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil – 1 tablespoon chopped fresh basil leaves

– 1 tablespoon chopped fresh oregano

PREPARATION Gently knead together the onions, lamb, egg, bread crumbs, garlic, salt, and pepper. Divide the mixture into 12 equal parts, form into small burger shaped patties, then cover and refrigerate until ready to use.

Mix together the goat cheese, extra-virgin olive oil, basil and oregano until well combined. Separate into 6 equal portions, cover and chill.

Preheat an outdoor grill for medium-high heat

Working with two portions of meat at a time, place one portion of meat on a plate then add

one portion of the goat cheese mixture. Place one more portion of meat on top of the cheese mixture, gently press and form the meat patty around the cheese filling, making a burger-shaped patty. Repeat with each ball of the lamb mixture.

Grill the patties on the preheated grill until no longer pink in the center and well done, about 8 minutes per side

Serve each burger on your choice of hamburger bun with lettuce, tomato and red onion.

BuddHa’s Hand Buddha’s hand, Citrus medica, is a fragrant citron variety whose fruit is segmented into finger-like sections. Buddha’s hand fruit is very fragrant and is used predominantly in China and Japan for perfuming rooms and personal items such as clothing. The peel of the fruit can be candied. In Western cooking, Buddha’s Hand is often

used for its zest. The inner white pith is not bitter as is usually the case with citrus, so

the “fingers” may be cut off and then longitudinally sliced—peel, pith,

and all—and used in salads or scattered over cooked foods

such as fish.
