The Grandview Compass

The Grandview Compass is produced three times per academic year by Grandview Preparatory School. All copy and photographs are by Haley Swartz unless otherwise noted. For questions, comments, or more information, please contact Haley Swartz at [email protected].

On the cover: Fifth grade students perform “Jazz,” representing the southern US in this year’s Winter Concert, “Traveling the USA—A Musical Journey.” The piece was directed by Director of Performing Arts Joanna Craik and choreographed by Katie Petronio, Director of the Dance Academy. Photo by Donna Leech.

A Day of Service In January, student-athletes from Lynn University spent the day at Grandview in honor of their Day of Service in remembrance of the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. The athletes read, played games, and ran activities throughout the day. What a wonderful experience for everyone involved!

Those of you who know me know that I am a big fan of the expression ‘Carpe Diem’ , the Latin phrase for “Seize the Day.” Those of

you who know me very well know that I don’t exactly practice what I preach. Living in the now is not my strength. Most of my precious minutes tick right on by while I stress about tomorrow or get weepy about the past. I have a lot to learn from those who have mastered the art of contentment. Contentment, in its purest form, is an art. It is not defined as an absence of drive, but instead as a grateful nod to the only slice of time we actually experience. Granted, striving to improve the present is a worthy mission, but we must be mindful that this mission doesn’t overtake the ability to see the wonder in what already exists. Since the days when we began hatching plans to create Grandview, I have looked at it only as something unfinished, an entity that will someday be all that we have dreamed.

Before we opened our doors for the first time, I spent countless hours fretting over possible problems that never materialized, always looking past the fact that our vision was actually taking shape. Students enrolled, families arrived, buildings were built, teachers taught, children learned and a real school was in session. Something real now stands where only an idea existed before. As a

‘contentment-challenged’ individual, I see mostly what remains to be done. I’m like that nervous parent who misses the joy of her child’s first steps only because a wobbly fall might be in the near future. The ‘contentment master’ would chastise my nervous impatience and remind me that toddling is actually the only way to learn to walk, which of course is the only way to eventually dance and run. The wobbly work

of beginnings requires patience and wisdom.

Mother Teresa, a truly patient and wise woman, once said, “Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today. Let us begin." Having understood what most of us take a lifetime to learn, Mother Teresa actually carried the ‘carpe diem’ philosophy in both her head and in her heart. My ‘carpe diem’ philosophy is stubbornly parked in my head, readily accessible in my words, but

rarely profoundly content in my heart. ‘Carpe Diem’, as the masters of contentment know, means let’s get busy doing things right this second, but remember to appreciate the joy captured in this imperfect moment. Everything we are is a work in progress; whether an attitude, a baby step or school. Of the work that lies ahead, take a look at those we love, give each other our best smile, and begin....today and every day for there is no time like the present. It really is a gift. Carpe Diem.

Students in Mrs. Eames’s chemistry classes show off their cool experiments with gas highlighting Gay-Lussac’s Gas Law. Left and right, students heat and cool aluminum cans and watch as they crush with the temperature change. Center, students lift up to 14 pounds using air blown into plastic bags. Cool!

Fun With Science: Hands-on Labs

Vocabulary Bees Spelling bee no more! Academic Dean Tiffany Della Vedova changed the format of our traditional spelling bees to a vocabulary bee so that students could learn to truly master words in order to boost their communication skills. Students received lists of vocabulary words prior to the event and had to qualify for the bee in their English classes. To win the bee, students had to spell and define words correctly in front of their teachers, parents, and peers! Congratulations to the winners of the very first Grandview Vocabulary Bee: 1st Grade: Erik Charles, 2nd Grade: Kylie Bauer, 3rd Grade: Jeremiah Roman, 4th Grade: Evan Charles, 5th Grade: Madeleine Kastmark, Middle School: Kamran Shpoon (runner-up Rachel Weinberg), Upper School: Nic Bucspun (reunner-up Julia Cournoyer). Way to go!

Volcano!!

Mr. Anderson and Mrs. Eames’s 6th grade science classes had a lesson in volcanoes in March. Each class learned the ins and outs of volcanoes, and then they put their knowledge to the test as they created and erupted their own volcanoes. Students used critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity while they built and activated their volcanoes. After the activity, students tapped into their communication skills to write a debriefing of the experiment. It was all explosive fun!

Opposite, students show off their prosthetic arm creation. Students had to be creative with their materials, keeping in mind that each material had to represent the form and function of the actual body part. Above, students pose with their prosthetic leg made from plastic piping, Styrofoam, hinges, and rubber bands and wrapped in bandages. Right, research for prosthetic arms and a prosthetic leg on display in the classroom. Students presented their research along with their prosthetic limb at the end of the unit.

Upper School Art In March, twelve upper school students were selected to have their art displayed at “Art in the Park,” an exhibit in Patch Reef Park displayed from March 1st through March 25th. The selection represented work across grade levels using different mediums and techniques. These pieces and more were showcased during the Underclassmen Art Exhibit in April. The Senior Art Exhibit will be held May 3rd through May 6th in the Gym Foyer. &Lower School Art Art students in 3rd, 4th and 5th graders participated in the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships Tennis Themed Art Contest! Students’ work (mini tennis posters of their own design) were judged and then put on display in the players' gallery. The International Tennis Championships took place at the Delray Beach Tennis Centre in February.

Celebration of Life 2010 Ask any Grandview middle school or

upper school student what their favorite day of the year is, and invariably they will reply “Celebration of Life.” For over ten years, Grandview students have hosted a holiday party for students in the special needs program at J.C. Mitchell Elementary School.

Since students in this program require special assistance, it is their only field trip of year, made possible by donations from

generous Grandview families. The transportation cost alone for these students and their aides can be over $400-- even though the school is located less than ! mile from Grandview’s campus.

But it is well worth the trip. As they arrive on campus, each J.C. Mitchell student is paired with a Grandview buddy. The buddies cover the campus as they host students through activities, treats, and story times. For those that are able, the bounce

house is always a favorite. Though it may seem as if the students

from J.C. Mitchell have the most to gain from this experience, Grandview Head of School Jackie Westerfield maintains that it is our students who reap the benefits. “It is amazing to see the interactions our students have with their buddies. We see students step up and face situations with compassion and a sense of purpose.”

Grandview is proud to continue this tradition each year thanks to the Grandview families who have made this special event possible through their generous donations. Thanks also to the members of GAP (Grandview Association of Parents) who donate and assemble gift bags for our guests each year.

Association created decorations and posters for the Dance-A-Thon, while third grade teacher Mr. Raphael manned the

music with the help of sophomore Jonathan Adams and junior Margaret Dickey. Dancers wore stars made by Grandview parent Celina Poole while they grooved away on the dance floor. Dancers raised over $1,000 in this first

year of the event. We are looking forward to having even more success next year!

In March, members of the Grandview community came together to plan and support the 1st Annual GPS Dance-A-Thon. The Dance-A-Thon was a community-building event meant to fundraise for the arts program at Grandview. A vision by Grandview parent Beth Buckley became reality as teachers, staff, parents, and students contributed to the event. Harvest in the garden! 5th grade students help to harvest the first radishes from the Grandview Garden. Our Grandview Garden has yielded quite a few vegetables and herbs! Students in third, fourth, and

fifth grade have harvested radishes, tomatoes, romaine lettuce, green peppers, and eggplants along with dill, oregano, basil, and cilantro. The goods were sold to Grandview parents at afternoon car line; due to the generous purchases and donations of parents, we are close to purchasing a second bed for our garden!
