Liven up with Lutyens

When you are in the city a visit to Lutyens' Delhi is a must.It is the central administrative area of New Delhi whichwas designed principally by the master architect Sir EdwinLutyens. If Shahjahanabad is a crowded, old-era city,Lutyens' Delhi is known for its openness, greenery andmodern visage. Superb rhubarb-red and beige-pinksandstone has been used in its grand buildings. Thebungalows in this part of the city are built for the city'sclimate. Large, open verandahs, apart from their elegance, keep the inner rooms cool. High ceilings carry the hot airup, and out through the ventilators.

The best way to tour this area is to hire a taxi or an auto-rickshaw.

Rashtrapati BhavanStart with the Rashtrapati Bhavan atop the Raisina Hill at thewestern end of Rajpath. It is the official residence of the Presidentof India. It took 17 years to build this vast mansion of 340 roomsspread over four floors. It was completed in 1931. Built in twoshades of sandstone, this building reflects a blend of Mughal andclassical European style of architecture. The most prominent anddistinguishing aspect of the Rashtrapati Bhavan is its huge dome, structured in the pattern of the great Stupa at Sanchi. In front ofthe Rashtrapati Bhavan is the JJaaiippuurr CCoolluummnn, topped by the Starof India. Towards the west of the Rashtrapati Bhavan lie thefamous MMuugghhaall GGaarrddeennss, modelled on Emperor Babar’s favoured

Savour the Sultanate

During the Delhi Sultanate, Turkic and Afghandynasties — Mamluks (slaves), Khiljis, Tughlaqs,Sayyids and Lodis — ruled from Delhi for more thanthree centuries. Before the Sultans lost to the Mughalsthey had contributed substantially to Delhi, especiallyits architecture. Their work can be seen mostly in SouthDelhi. Among these dynasties, the Slave Dynasty isknown especially for the marvel built right at the outset — Qutub Minar. Along with the Qutub, there areseveral other lesser known monuments in the complexand its vicinity in Mehrauli. Let us walk through these.

You can take local buses from various points in Delhi to reach theQutub Complex, which is located in the southern part of the city.Besides, there are regular buses to this monument fromConnaught Place and the Interstate Bus Terminuses (ISBTs) atKashmiri Gate and Sarai Kale Khan. Delhi Tourism and privateoperators conduct guided tours. You can also take the metro toMehrauli.

Qutub ComplexThe Qutub complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and alsothe venue for the annual Qutub Festival. The eennttrraannccee to theQutub Complex is part of a serai (inn) from the late Mughal era.Beyond the entrance is the QQuuwwwwaatt--uull--IIssllaamm MMaassjjiidd, also knownas the Qutub Mosque or the Great Mosque of Delhi. It was thefirst mosque built in Delhi after the Islamic conquest of India.

Built by Qutub-ud-din Aibak in 1193,it is the best surviving example ofGhurid architecture. Not only wasthe mosque raised over the remainsof a temple, it was also constructedfrom materials taken from 27demolished temples.

The IIrroonn PPiillllaarr in the courtyard ofthe mosque is a favourite with allvisitors. Originally built to payhomage to Lord Vishnu and thememory of Chandragupta II, thepillar has held against corrosion forthe last 1600 years. For visitors, it hadbecome common practice to standwith their backs to the pillar and try to encircle it with their arms.It was said that if you could make your hands touch, your wishwould be fulfilled! For the pillar, however, it was an exercise full ofsweat. To avoid this, metal grills have now been put around it.

To the northwest of the mosque lies IIllttuuttmmiisshh''ss TToommbb, whichFergusson described as "one of the richest examples of Hindu artapplied to Muhammadan purposes". Sauntering around AAllaa--uudd--ddiinn''ss mmaaddrraassaa aanndd ttoommbb, you reach your coveted minaret.

At 72.5 metres, QQuuttuubb MMiinnaarr is the tallest brick minaret in theworld. Its construction was started in AD 1200 by Qutub-ud-dinAibak. The minaret is made of red and buff sandstone coveredwith intricate carvings and verses from the Quran. One of theearliest and most prominent examples of Indo-Islamicarchitecture, it was probably built to commemorate the victory ofMuhammad Ghori over the Rajputs. Standing before this tallstructure can, ironically, be a lesson in humility.

The AAllaa--ii--DDaarrwwaazzaa (Alai Gate) is the main gateway from thesouthern side of the Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque. It was built by thesecond Khilji Sultan of Delhi, Ala-ud-din Khilji, in AD 1311. Thegateway testifies to the skills of the Turkish artisans. AAllaa’’ii MMiinnaarr, which stands to the north of Qutub Minar, was commenced byAla-ud-din. He wanted to make it twice the size of Qutub, but he

Enter the park through the GGaatteewwaayy ttoo BBaallbbaann''ss TToommbb. Thegateway was believed to be an independent structure untilconservation work revealed that it was connected to BBaallbbaann''ssTToommbb. The 13th-century tomb of Sultan Balban, the last greatruler of the Slave Dynasty, lies in a square, rubble-built chamberwith arched openings on all four sides. This is the first majorbuilding in India where the true arch and dome were constructed. On its left are the ruins of buildings estimated to be of 16th and17th centuries. This part was uncovered from dense forests in theyears 2001–02.

Take a right turn and you reach the JJaammaallii--KKaammaallii MMoossqquuee aannddTToommbb. The construction of the mosque was started around1528–29 during the rule of Babur, the founder of the MughalEmpire, but was completed during Humayun's period. He was initiated into Sufism by his teacher ShaikhSamauddin. Not much is known about Kamali. Some original bluetiles still survive above the entrance doorway of the mosque.

Next you reach what was once the estate of British Resident,Sir Thomas Metcalfe. You come to MMeettccaallffee''ss BBrriiddggee. A grandstaircase led to QQuullii KKhhaann''ss TToommbb from the bridge, which Metcalfeerected to provide access to his estate. It stands onan artificial mound and forms an excellent vantage point for allthe surrounding structures. The Lodi period gateway leadingfrom Quli Khan's tomb to the Qutub was extended by Metcalfeand used as a guesthouse.

King Anangpal, the Tomar ruler, built Lal Kot ashis citadel around AD 1050 when the Tomar Rajputs shifted theirbase from the Suraj Kund region to this area. It was the originalRed Fort of Delhi. Rajon ki Baoli was used by raj (masons) andhence its name. The magnificent three-storeyed step-well wasbuilt by Daulat Khan during the reign of Sikandar Lodi in 1516.

From there a long way brings you back to the entrance of thecomplex. On the way you get to see, among other structures, awalled enclosure, a mosque and tomb, gatehouses, a tomb withsandstone jharokha, andhorse stables. The Commonwealth's 1.8 billion people make up one-third of the world'spopulation and are of many faiths, races, languages and cultures. India officiallybecame a member of the Commonwealth of Nations in 1931.

Shera is the official mascot of the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010. Hisname comes from the Hindi word sher, which means 'tiger'. The logo for the XIXCommonwealth Games 2010 Delhi is inspired by the Chakra, the nationalsymbol of freedom, unity and power.
