“I asked my soul: What is Delhi?

She replied: The world is the body and Delhi its life.

- Mirza Ghalib”

A city full of historical wonders, Delhi has many tourist sites. Sprinkled with ruins, one

can walk through timelines, from one era to another, from one world to another and from

one story to another. From the ancient to the medieval and from the modern to the

contemporary, one can experience the city through its monuments, forts, ruins, old and

new towns that represent India’s history.

Embracing two worlds, Old Delhi is a labyrinth of mysterious narrow lanes, havelis and

majestic mosques and New Delhi is composed of spacious tree lined avenues, imposing

government buildings and modern infrastructure. It embodies the stark, almost absurd,

contrast of India: A world class metro system, the chaos of Old Delhi and the Colonial

serenity of Lutyens Delhi.

Delhi has a rich & intense history depicting remarkable continuity and has the unique

distinction of having been India’s capital longer than any other city. The city has

survived all the changes of time and fortune. It has frequently changed its form, its

character and its name. It has seen the rise and fall of many civilizations and empires.

From Indraprastha of Mahabharata to the present New Delhi, it has grown into a mega

metropolis. Due to such a rich heritage, Delhi is the home of some of the greatest

architectural marvels and a culture so unique and diverse. Delhi is the city of three World

Heritage sites – Qutub Minar, Red Fort and Humayun’s Tomb. All the monuments house

thousands of anecdotes. One can either get inspired from the many stories, or weave

one’s own by experiencing the city.

Delhi is a great city to make the perfect backdrop to an eye and frame of a Camera. With

so many exotic locales and settings seeped into history and culture, how can cinema not

capture it? Delhi, is undoubtedly a cinematic delight. Different parts of the city give a

different character to a film, from Rang de Basanti, Delhi 6, Aisha, to the more recent,

Raanjhanaa, Fukrey and pk.

Delhi has emerged as one of Bollywood’s favourite shooting destinations. Several known

filmmakers have either shot for their projects or are scouting for locations in Delhi. In the

past two years, due to improvement in the support system and nomination of Delhi

Tourism as the nodal agency for facilitating film shootings in Delhi, Bollywood is looking

towards Delhi like never before. The number of films shot in the city has substantially

increased. Some of the recent films extensively shot in Delhi are pk, Raanjhanaa, Kick,

Kill Dil, Tevar, Dolly ki Doli, Baby, & Tanu weds Manu Returns among others.

Delhi apart from being a filmmaker’s delight also has availability of new talent, lower

production cost, international connectivity, better infrastructure and more than 200

locations to shoot at. Delhi Tourism itself has a few properties which can be used as ideal

location to shoot at.

Edwin Lutyens, the master designer of New Delhi. The green lawns at India Gate are a

known for its tree-lined, wide roads driving through which, is an experience in itself.

providing comfort in times of excess and in destitution. He provided balance to a city like

Delhi by spirituality. His example led to what Delhi is today; a stature of a city with varied

religions and saints. This Dargah is where he rests now. This is the place visited by Hindus,

Muslims, and Sikhs alike, who come like one family here to pay their respect to Hazrat

Nizamuddin Aulia, for whom religious distinctions never mattered.

Reasons why Delhi is one the best cities for shooting films:

Ø Delhi is economical to shoot in and permissions are easy to get:

Shooting in Delhi has been made easier with Delhi Tourism’s very own Film Shooting

Facilitation Cell. One need not get in touch with intermediaries and multiple agencies to get

permissions to shoot at various locations with the Single Window Clearance Mechanism soon

to be implemented by Delhi Tourism. All one needs to do is get in touch with Delhi Tourism

and the process would be taken forward.

Ø Market associations not a hurdle:

Delhi's market associations allow film shootings without any problems. Chandni Chowk is

one of the markets which are widely seen in movies shot in Delhi. If a scene is set inside a

restaurant or within a marketplace, one can easily get the shoot done in Delhi. The only

condition owners keep is that the restaurant or shop's name should appear on the screen.

Ø Delhi & NCR have all kinds of backgrounds and backdrops:

Delhi is like a wide stage where film makers can come across distinct backgrounds for their

films. One can show any kind of situation in Delhi and NCR, for the region provides all sorts

of backdrops from the lower middle class family of Fukrey, and the Lajpat Nagar Punjabi

family with the Daryaganj fertility clinics of Vicky Donor to Aisha's posh locales. Delhi is apt

for all kinds of shooting scenes. If a filmmaker wants to shoot in college campuses, they go to

North Campus. And for a typical Delhi look, film-makers prefer the Old Delhi area. Delhi has

a solution for everyone’s demands.
