Honoring Original Parishioners: Do you remember attending Mass at the Webb School? Do you remember daily Mass being said at 340 Prospect Street, the original rectory with a Chapel? Did you go door to door as a seeker of donations to help build Incarnation Church? Do you remember being at the ground break-ing ceremony with Father Crawford pitching his shovel into this holy ground known as the beginning of the construction? If you do recall these founding events, then you are an original parishioner and the 50th Jubilee Committee wishes to honor you. If you plan to attend the 50th Anniversary Mass on September 8, 2013 at 11:00am, there will be reserved seating es-pecially for you. Please spread this message to any original parishioner that you know. Call Noranne Wamester at (860) 529-6765 with your name & address or email us at: [email protected]. Reference your message: Original parishioner. Thank you.

Due to the Privacy Acts it has become in-creasingly difficult for priests to locate and visit parishioners in the hospital. If you are going to be admitted into the hospital, please inform the hospital that you are a member of Incarnation or call the rectory prior to your entry into the hospital. Thank you. A Family Perspective...Just like the 72 dis-ciples sent out by Jesus in today’s gospel, families are expected to be MISSIONAR-IES. By our lives, words and lifestyle we proclaim peace, commitment, fidelity and respect to a culture caught up with vio-lence and gratification. A Weekly Bible Study 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time Galatians 6:14-18

May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Je-sus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. If we were persuaded to become converts to Judaism, how would we react? What beliefs would we give up? What symbols of our faith would we leave behind? Could we even conceive of such a change? Imagine the very difficult transition in the early church as Jews accepted the new faith. For many of them it was not the sense of immediate conversion we get from the Pentecost event. It was more of a gradual struggle to let go of traditions and practices deeply embedded in their history as well as their collective psyche. In order to understand properly the context of the above quote from Galatians, we first need to consider the “Judaizers.” These Jewish Christians in the early church held that circumcision and the observance of the Mosaic Law were necessary for salvation and wished to impose them on the Gentile converts or re-quire them of other Jewish Christians. Paul admonishes those of the Galatian church who continue to promote the notion that their external acts, behaviors and achievements mark them as believers and become a source of their boasting. Paul points them, rather, in the direction of the one and only real-ity that must be the source of their boasting: the cross. In this context “cross” signifies the whole Christ-event, the Paschal Mystery. When he says “the world has been crucified to me and I to the world,” Paul has put to death within himself all that is opposed to his new faith. He looks to the cross as the true symbol of transformation. The reality of the Paschal Mystery is now so central to Paul’s life that he is totally absorbed in its power to shape his life. Would that we could even come close to Paul’s re-solve!

Beginning in January 2014, our Sunday Mass schedule will be revised. Sunday masses will be celebrated at 8:30am and 10:30am only. Our vigil mass will remain at 5pm on Saturday. The Incarnation Parish Council came to this decision based on a num-ber of factors. We appreciate the cooperation of all of our parishioners in this regard. Archbishop’s Annual Appeal 2013: We ask for your continued support Thank you! Congratulations to all graduates from all of us at Incarnation! Please note: We have low gluten hosts avail-able for those with Gluten Intolerance. Please notify the sacristan prior to Mass.

Please note: We have wheel-chair accessibility on the East Side Chapel entrance.

We appreciate the thoughtfulness of parishioners who have made a bequest to The Church of the Incarnation. These charitable gifts build our parish endowment to help pass on our Catholic faith to future generations. Many Catholic families are mak-ing charitable gifts to create parish endow-ment funds in memory of parents and other loved ones. Contact Fr. Moran to establish a Memorial Fund in the name of your parent(s) or a loved one. If you will be moving within or out of our parish, please notify the rectory so that we may update our records. MISSION Today’s first reading from Isaiah was occasioned by the return of the Jewish people from exile. The prophet visualizes the Holy City as a mother welcoming her children home. The people may now look forward to prosperity and comfort. In this post-Pentecostal season, the Church attributes this sense of fulfillment to the Holy Spirit. Paul, on the other hand, speaks of “the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.” It is the sin-gle thing of which he will boast, for it is the means by which we are re-created. The com-fort and prosperity promised in the first read-ing are here transformed by a deepening of the Christian paradox. Luke’s Gospel describes the calling and the mission of “seventy-two others,” who are commissioned to bring in the “harvest.” The number is symbolic, since according to Jewish tradition the number of nations in the world is seventy-two. This then is a universal mission, a catholic mission to all the world.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading —As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you (Isaiah 66:10-14c). Psalm — Let all the earth cry out to God with joy (Psalm 66). Second Reading — May I never boast ex-cept in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ (Galatians 6:14-18). Gospel — Jesus sends out the seventy-two (Luke 10:1-12, 17-20 [1-9]).

READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Gn 28:10-22a; Ps 91:1-4, 14-15ab; Mt 9:18-26 Tuesday: Gn 32:23-33; Ps 17:1b, 2-3, 6-7ab, 8b, 15; Mt 9:32-38 Wednesday: Gn 41:55-57; 42:5-7a, 17-24a; Ps 33:2-3, 10-11, 18-19; Mt 10:1-7 Thursday: Gn 44:18-21, 23b-29; 45:1-5; Ps 105:16-21; Mt 10:7-15 Friday: Gn 46:1-7, 28-30; Ps 37:3-4, 18-19, 27-28, 39-40; Mt 10:16-23 Saturday: Gn 49:29-32; 50:15-26a; Ps 105:1-4, 6-7; Mt 10:24-33 Sunday: Dt 30:10-14; Ps 69:14, 17, 30-31, 33-34, 36, 37; or 19:8-11; Col 1:15-20; Lk 10:25-37

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION It’s high summer now, school is out, the pace of work slows, and some people drift away. There are visitors in the churches every summer, and famil-iar faces are “among the missing.” Some find the summer’s call more appealing than the summons of the church bells. Many, however, would not dream of missing a Sunday, and so they make their way to Mass in unfamiliar places, watching the locals for clues as to when to sit or stand, where the Commun-ion stations are. In answering the call, they keep the “sabbatical” rhythm of the Christian life: every sev-enth day, the Body of Christ assembles for worship. For centuries, there was no obligation to Sun-day Mass in the sense of a written law, but Christians have always yearned to be together on Sunday. In the city of Abitina, during a persecution by the Emperor Diocletian, a group of Christians were urged to stop worshiping together on Sundays. They responded, “Then take our lives, for without the Sunday we can-not live.” By a curious coincidence, the appointed readings today center us on thoughts of peace. On our Independence Day, the experience of worship situates us in community, and evokes a commitment from us to be advocates of peace in all aspects of our society’s life.
