My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: As Thanksgiving Day draws near each year, I like to think about all of those blessings for which I am thankful. Among those, of course, is to be the pastor of Incarnation Parish. I’m thankful for all of the awesome, prayerful, good-looking, and amazingly intelligent people we have in our parish. Considering your prestigious wisdom and worldly perspicac-ity, I thought it would be fun to give you all a little quiz. These are not trick questions. They are straight questions with straight answers. See how many you know. The answers will be in next week’s bulletin. 1. Name the one sport in which neither the spectators nor the participants know the score or who is leading until the contest ends. 2. What famous North American landmark is constantly mov-ing backward? 3. Of all vegetables, only two can live to produce on their own for several growing seasons. All other vegetables must be replanted every year. What are the only two perennial vegeta-bles? 4. What fruit has its seeds on the outside? 5. In many liquor stores, you can buy pear brandy, with a real pear inside the bottle. The pear is whole and ripe, and the bottle is genuine; it hasn’t been cut in any way. How did the pear get inside the bottle? 6. Only three words in standard English begin with the letters “dw”, and they are all common words. Name two of them. 7. There are fourteen punctuation marks in English grammar. Can you name at least half of them? 8. Name the only vegetable or fruit that is never sold frozen, canned, processed, cooked, or in any other form except fresh. 9. Name six or more things that you can wear on your feet beginning with the letter “S.” Good luck in coming up with the correct answers! Please don’t “sweat it out” too much! Have a Blessed and Happy Thanksgiving! Hope to see you in church on Thursday! We all have much for which to be thankful! In the Love and Peace of Jesus, Father Bernie

THE INCARNATION

CHURCH MOUSE

Hi Folks! Well, here we are getting ready for Ol’ Tom

Turkey. I still thought it was another week away. Now I really have to run around and get ready. Let’s see-turkey, yams, stuffing, cranberries, pumpkin pie and chestnuts. The holidays aren’t the same without chestnuts. If you’ve never eaten a roasted chestnut you don’t know what you’re missing. It’s a ritual in itself. You have to first put a slit in the skin, then you put them in a “chestnut’ roasting pan. It can’t be just any pan, it has to be the special one. That’s what mom use to say. And when mom went to her heavenly reward, we fought over who would get the “pan”. Once you’ve placed a slit in them you go get the bandaids because you can’t help but cut yourself (still part of the tradition). You put them in the oven for 30 minutes or so and when they look right you take them out of the oven. It’s all feel-no science. If you’re a real chestnut lover, you don’t even wait for them to cool off. You grab one fast, place it on the table and hit it with the palm of your hand. If you’re lucky you get a clean break and out comes the whole chestnut that you blow on and than pop it in your mouth! Success. Usually you burn your tongue (still part of the tradition) first, but the treat was worth it. Now, sometimes the chestnuts do not cooperate and they don’t come out easily, you have to work at it. You break it open but the fuzzy skin sticks to the chestnut or they can even be a little moldy or burnt. It’s a little like opening a box of Cracker Jacks and not knowing what the surprise will be. Now in order to be a real chestnut eater you also must have a little glass of red wine with it. Now you’re in heaven ! A lot of us have traditions and rituals we do especially around the holidays that make the moment special. I bet each of you has a food or scent or just something that’s unique to you and your family. It makes the moment special and it’s something you won’t forget. I think we need more of those moments in our lives to help make us feel good even if it’s just for an hour or a day. Life goes by too fast and we’re all busy, so much so that we miss those “chestnut moments’ as I like to call them. We as Catholics have that moment at Mass. It’s unique to our “faith family.” It’s something special and it makes us feel bet-ter. Just as I hold on to that “chestnut pan,” may we hold on to our faith and enjoy that gift from God. I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving and may God contin-ue to bless you and your families. Take time to enjoy the day and don’t let this season pass you by because you were too busy to “smell the chestnuts.”

Blessings, Incy

When you think of family fun ac-tivities, you likely think of activi-ties in the truest sense of the word: swimming, biking, sled-ding, and the like—in other

words, doing something that involves activity. While all those things are, in fact, fun family activities, there’s likely one key element missing from them: real conversation—the kind that helps you get to know the most important people in your life and helps them get to know you!

Consider trying a NEW kind of family fun activity—learning about the ones you love. To do it, you only need a few ques-tions to spark fun conversation. That’s right—having conver-sations with your family can be downright fun. How?

Well, grab a bowl of popcorn, gather your family, and try the questions listed here for starters (excerpted from The Meal

Box):

• What has been the most exciting moment or event in your life to this point?

• If you could change one thing about the way your favorite holiday is celebrated, what would you change?

• Kids: What aspect of being an adult are you looking for-ward to the most? Adults: What aspect of being a kid do you miss the most?

• If you had to describe your personality in terms of a farm animal, which one would it be?

When you consider our amazing earth, in what particular as-pect of it do you find it easiest to “see” God?

Looking for family fun activities?

Here’s one with benefits that last a lifetime . . .

Background on the Gospel Reading

“You are my inheritance, Oh Lord”You are my inheritance, Oh Lord”You are my inheritance, Oh Lord”You are my inheritance, Oh Lord” This Sunday is the second to last Sunday of our liturgical year. As we approach the end of the Church year, our Gospel invites us to consider Jesus' predictions and teaching about the end of the world. In the context of Mark's Gospel, Jesus' words about this are spoken to His disciples as He prepares them for His pas-sion and death. Before we consider Jesus' words, it is important to note the politi-cal backdrop against which many think Mark's Gospel was writ-ten. Most scholars concur that Mark wrote his Gospel for Chris-tians living in or near Rome about 30 to 40 years after the death of Jesus. This was a time of political turmoil in Rome. Some Christians experienced persecution by the Romans during the reign of the emperor Nero (about 64 A.D.). Jewish revolutionar-ies rebelled against the Romans, which led the Romans to de-stroy the Temple in Jerusalem in 70 A.D. In this time of political turmoil and persecution, many in Mark's community might have wondered if the end times predicted by Jesus were in fact quite near. Last Sunday we heard Jesus' observation about the contribu-tions being made to the temple treasury and the example of sac-rificial giving that He saw in the poor widow's offering. If we had been reading Mark's Gospel continuously, we would have heard Jesus predict the destruction of the Temple, His teaching about the costs of discipleship, and the woes that will accompany the end times. Finally, we would have heard Jesus instruct His disci-ples about the need for watchfulness so that they will not be caught unprepared for this final day of judgment. In today's Gospel, Jesus continues this teaching by offering His disciples signs to look for that will indicate that the coming of the Son of Man is near. His words and images draw upon Old Testa-ment imagery, especially images found in the Book of Daniel. Next, Jesus offers the lesson of the fig tree, a parable that teach-es that if one knows how to read the signs, one can be prepared for the end times. Jesus also teaches, however, that no one knows when the end time will come, except the Father. In the verses that follow this reading in Mark's Gospel, Jesus continues to warn His disciples to be on watch for this end time. Jesus' words are not spoken to frighten His disciples, nor should they frighten us. Rather, they are offered to prepare us for the changes we will experience during our lifetimes and at the end times. Our consolation and hope is found in the lasting nature of Jesus' words and God's never-ending love for us. From Loyola Press’s Sunday Connection. Reprinted with permission. You’ll find an

Annual Fund Drive

PARISH APPEAL

THANKSGIVING DAY is the day set apart for the main Fundraiser for our core charitable ac$vity, namely the assis-

tance to people in our Parish boundary who appeal to Incarna$on Church for emergency help.

Throughout the year, our Vincen$an caseworkers meet with individuals and families who have fallen on hard

$mes, and who desperately need help. The assistance provided by SVdP ranges from food/gas cards or baby/child

- and other supplies, to the payment of various emergency expenses. We also provide long-term guidance in diffi-

cult family situa$ons, and/or coordinate assistance from other local charitable organiza$ons for our clients.

To provide assistance, we rely exclusively on your generous dona$ons, deposited in the Parish Poor Boxes, and, on

the success of our ANNUAL FUND DRIVE.

Unfortunately, many of our parishioners will not able to a4end Mass on Thanksgiving Day, when we take up our

collec$on. PLEASE do not discard the THANKSGIVING Envelope included with your Offering Envelopes. We truly

need your help! Please return the envelope to us with your dona$on, any$me, by deposi$ng it into one of the In-

carna$on Poor Boxes.

We thank you wholeheartedly for helping us to help others!

pro-life dream.

MICHAEL JOHN POIRIER, an internationally known singer of religious music, and a guitarist, will be singing and playing at Holy Communion time at all of our week-end Masses on the weekend of November 24th and 25th and will sing and play at a "concert" on Monday, November 26th, at 7:00 P.M. in the Parish Cen-ter. There will be no charge nor free-will offering at the event. Also, Michael will be singing and playing during the daytime hours of that day at our parish school, for the benefit of our children. Everyone is certainly invited to the event at the Parish Center.
