My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
Happy Epiphany to all of you! One of the age-old customs of the Church is to bless homes during the Sea-son of Epiphany. Traditionally, the priest came to the homes of all of his parishioners at this time of the year and blessed the homes. I remember when I was a child that the priest would ask the children in the family their catechism questions when he came to do the blessing. If we timed it the right way, we would somehow manage to be out with our friends when the priest came! Some families prefer to do the blessing themselves. If you would like to bless your own home, you can do so as follows: Head of Household: “Loving Father, we ask for Your blessing upon this our home, upon all the members of our family, upon all our loved ones, and upon all who visit us. Keep this home safe and protected from all harm and danger in this year and always. May all people who enter this home find within it the peace, love, kindness, compassion, and forgiveness of Our Lord Jesus. When they leave this home, may they carry that peace, love, kindness, compassion, and for-giveness to all they meet. We ask this, as we ask all our prayers, through Christ our Lord.”
All: “Amen.” (With a piece of blessed chalk, place the following sym-bol over the front doorway or whichever doorway is used most frequently:
+20+C+M+B+13+
This represents Jesus, symbolized by the crosses, the first letter of the names of the Three Wise Men, and the current year.) While placing this symbol over the doorway, pray:
Head of Household: “As the Three Wise Men brought gifts to the Holy Family, may they intercede for our fam-ily in bringing God’s blessings upon us. We ask this prayer, as we ask all our prayers, through Christ our Lord.” All: “Amen.” In the Love and Peace of Jesus,
In gratitude for the gifts we have received from God, parishioners and visitors made a joyful return to the Lord through their donations last weekend:
12/16/12 $19,738.00 12/23/12 $19,582.00 12/25/12 $38,568.00

November, 2012: $25,643.00

Whew, I made it through the New Year’s celebra-
tion. I was a good little mouse, stayed up till mid-
night, ate some cheese and crackers, washed it
down with fruit punch and went off to bed. I still
had a hard time sleeping. Seems those visions of
sugar plums were still dancing in my head. I was
thinking, when we used to celebrate Epiphany and
How it was a big event. We’d call it “little Christmas”
and we’d even get some gifts. The family would all
gather and we’d party once again because the Wise
Men brought gifts to Jesus. In my family it was hard
to find “3 wise guys,” which I never quite under-
stood!?! For me it was the end of a wonderful sea-
son and I’d hate to see it end. But now that I am
wiser and older (a little like the Wise Men), I realize
that the spirit of Christmas is up to me, to be kept
alive throughout the year. I try to look for the gifts
that God has planned for me and, instead of being
under a tree, they are usually right under my nose,
but I just don’t see them. These gifts are usually
taken for granted like good health, good friends and
family and the love of God. So, let’s keep our eyes
open this year and see how many gifts God has for
us—but remember to share them!

THE NEXT ADULT EDUCATION SESSION will be held on Wednesday, January 9th, at 7:00
P.M. in the Parish Center. We will continue with the "Catholicism" Series by Father Robert Bar-ron. This session will focus on Saints Peter and Paul and the missionary spirit and work of the Catholic Church. We are all called to be mission-aries, not necessarily by spreading the Word of God in foreign lands, but right in our own midst--
-where we live and work. There are so many people we come into contact with every day who haven't yet heard the Good News. It's up to us to be messengers of that Good News! Come on Wednesday, January 9th, to learn about how all of us have the task of being missionaries and how we can carry out that mandate from our
Lord!
Just so you know… The Saturday 4:30 choir is always looking for people who have sung previously in a choral group. We rehearse at 3:00 PM on Saturday afternoon, and then we sing at the 4:30 Mass. If you are a snow bird, all we ask is that you will be here for at least a month. Please come up and speak to someone in the choir af-ter the 4:30 Mass, or talk to Jody Wolters, the director of the choir, after any Mass. He is usually at the piano or the organ.

Background on the Gospel Reading
“Lord, every nation on earth will adore you”
The visit of the Magi occurs directly before the story of the Holy Family's flight into Egypt. Matthew's Gospel tells a version of Jesus' birth that is different than the one in Luke. Of the actual birth of Jesus, Matthew tells us little more than, “When Je-sus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod . . . ” The story of the census is found only in Luke's Gospel, but we hear about the visit of the Magi only in Matthew's Gospel.
We know little about the Magi. They come from the East and journey to Bethlehem, following an astrologi-cal sign, so we believe them to be astrologers. We as-sume that there were three Magi based upon the nam-ing of their three gifts. The Gospel does not say how many Magi paid homage to Jesus. In Matthew's Gos-pel, they represent the Gentiles' search for a savior. Because the Magi represent the entire world, they also represent our search for Jesus.
We have come to consider the gifts they bring as a foreshadowing of Jesus' role in salvation. We believe the meaning of the gifts to be Christological. Gold is presented as representative of Jesus' kingship. Frankin-cense is a symbol of his divinity because priests burned the substance in the Temple. Myrrh, which was used to prepare the dead for burial, is offered in anticipation of Jesus' death.
The word Epiphany means “manifestation” or “showing forth.” Historically several moments in Christ's early life and ministry have been celebrated as “epiphanies,” in-cluding his birth in Bethlehem, the visit of the Magi, his baptism by John, and his first miracle at Cana.

Living the Virtues in Everyday Life
Leading a virtuous life sounds like something that is just for the super-religious people out there. But it is really something each one of us can aim for. God gives us the awesome gifts of the theological virtues of faith, hope, and love. Plus there are a ton of other virtues that we can develop on our own.
For example, there are the virtues of temperance, prudence, courage, and justice. These virtues came from classic Western philosophy (think Plato and Aristotle) and were repackaged by Church heavyweights such as Saint Augustine and Saint Thomas Aquinas so that they connected with the Christian faith. These four virtues are known as the cardinal virtues because they are critical to forming our moral values and guiding our behavior. In addi-tion to the cardinal virtues, there are many other virtues that we can develop. Check out Isaiah 11:2 and Galatians 5:22-23 for more. You'll find many places on the Internet that list virtues that are rec-ognized in different cultures. Wikipedia's entry on "virtue" lists 100 virtues that are commonly recog-nized in Western culture. Once you've had a chance to look at all the differ-ent virtues out there, you begin to see that there is quite a range to choose from. Did you know that good humor is a virtue? Imagination and curiosity are also virtues. All of a sudden, leading a virtuous life might not seem half bad. Who wouldn't want to be creative, happy, courageous, trustworthy, or fo-cused? We might not label these things as “virtues” or make them top priority, but the fact is, most of us live the virtues every day. Even something as small as being tactful or friendly is virtuous. The upshot is that leading a virtuous life is not just for the superreligious (if there even is such a thing). It's for you and me and for all people who want to be true to themselves. Living the virtues helps us be real and go after our dreams. Living the virtues helps us be more aware of the people around us and help them when we can. Living the virtues helps us see the beauty in the world, especially in nature, and moves us to care for these as the pre-cious gifts they are. Living the virtues helps us get more in tune with God.

Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord
We celebrate today the Solemn Feast of the
Epiphany, also referred to as “The Feast of the
Three Kings.”
On the Feast of the Epiphany, God revealed Himself
to all peoples as symbolized by the magi who visited the
Lord upon seeing the sign in the heavens, and upon
reaching Bethlehem, adored the Child and offered
Him three symbolic gifts – gold to the King, incense to
God, and myrrh to the Man who will be buried.
The magi went in search of God. When they found
Jesus, the course of their lives changed. We, too, are in
search for Jesus. We experience epiphanies, the
revelation of Jesus, the Son of God, all the days of
our lives.
Jesus reveals himself to us in the Eucharist, the
Sunday readings, the Sacraments, prayer, good
people and events in our lives. Like the magi, we are
greatly changes by our experiences of Jesus, the Son
of God.
