In 2009, he earned “Teacher of the Year” at McLean High School where he is both Latin teacher and department chair. One of his students wrote, “There is a general consensus in the class that Mr. Bigger has taught us more in three years of Latin than we have learned in 12 years of school.” Another person had this to say, “He is the teacher the kids who have cherish, the one the kids who don’t have wish they had, and the one the kids who once had always remember and come home to see.” Laura Joyner of Lylburn Downing Middle School, Lexington VA is the recipient of the Lurlene Todd Teacher of the Year Award. The nominating committee spoke of her excellence in teaching, “She manages to harness the diversity of students’ knowledge and ability levels in order to achieve excellent outcomes where all children learn and are engaged.” Her students regularly participate in the CAV Latin tournament and national tests. She is a teacher that inspires her students and provides them with opportunities to excel.

CAV PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Summer 2017 2 The CAV News

Salvete, omnes!

I hope everyone in the classroom has had a calm and gentle end to the academic year! I am sure we can rest comfortable in the notion that we have passed on to our students knowledge, direction, and some affinity for Latin, Greek, and other aspects of the ancient Greco-Roman world. Some of our students have moved on from school and college and will be facing a new world, hope-fully strengthened by thoughts inspired by things Greek and Roman.

I wish to thank again Jana Adamitis for hosting a wonderful spring meeting at Christopher Newport University in Newport News -- the facilities, food, and hospitality were first-rate! If you have never been on the CNU campus, it is definitely worth the visit! I wish to also thank those members of the CAV who attended our latest meeting. There were great talks, camaraderie, and a VAST silent auction with a little bit of something for everybody! Unfortunately, I have discovered that the location of the meeting has little effect on attendance by members in the vicinity. While the physical setting was outstanding, there was no increase in attendance by members who live in the southeastern part of the state. I think this sends us all a message that it really doesn’t matter where the meeting is held, and those who want to attend will make the effort no matter where the location.

The fall meeting of the Classical Association of Virginia will be held on Satur-day, September 30 on the grounds of the University of Virginia in Charlottes-ville. Also remember that the annual meeting of the Foreign Language Associa-tion of Virginia (FLAVA) will be held at the Williamsburg Doubletree Hotel and Conference Center October 4-7, 2017. Be sure to mark your calendars now and join us for interesting presentations, stimulating conversations, food and drink at both these professional opportunities!

Be sure to enjoy your summer!

Curate ut valeatis!Mark

Attendees at the Spring meeting hosted by Christopher Newport University.

James (JP) Wilusz from St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes School is the winner of the Wayne Wray Student Scholarship. His teacher, Ian Hochberg, noted JP’s pas-sion for Classics and his willingness to share this enthusiasm with his peers. JP himself sums up the reason he is this year’s winner, writing, “Latin has been such an instrumental part of my life that I want nothing more than to share and spread my passion.”

Another Successful Silent AuctionMultas Gratias to everyone at the spring CAV meeting who donated or bought items for the silent auction. It was an amazing collection of goods this year and a fantastic collection of funds - nearly $350!!! All those funds support the Professional Development Grant. Since we’ve definitely got the funds, it’s now time for all those pursuing greater knowl-edge in the classics or improved skills in teaching to apply for a grant! Go to bit.ly/CAVGrant by August 31 to get more information and to fill out the online application. Grant recipients will be announced at the fall CAV meeting. If you have any questions, contact Amy Petersen at [email protected].

LATI 7030 Teaching of Latin at University of Virginia

Classics students, prospective teachers, and teachers seeking certification or continuing education credits, UVA will be offering a Teaching Latin course during the first two weeks of Session III Summer School. Classes will involve lively discussion and demonstration of current pedagogy, and students will come away with sample lessons and practical ideas for their classrooms. Patty Lister, a 25-year veteran Latin teacher in Fairfax Co., Virginia is the instructor. For more information and to register, see http://summer.virginia.edu

LATN 470 Medieval Latin for Teachers at Lynchburg College

This online course, June 12-July 21, shows how the Latin language and genres of writing such as legends, biographies, letters, and poetry developed during the period 500-1500 CE, following the fall of Rome in 476 CE. Thus it provides continuity from the study of ancient Roman culture, prose, and poetry, which spread throughout the empire, was preserved in manuscripts and printed books, and developed in new forms. The course includes reading and translation, an introduction to paleography or handwriting styles in manuscripts, and lesson plans for teaching. It is designed especially for students planning to teach or teachers seeking certification credits in Latin. Elza C. Tiner, Professor of Latin & English, teaches in the Modern and Classical Languages and English Departments at Lynchburg College. For application and admission information please contact the Lynchburg College Office of Enrollment Services, 434.544.8300. For information about summer tuition, please contact the Student Accounts Office, [email protected] or Tonya Huslack at 434.544.8217.
