A final thought and prayer My last weekend bulletin article and that of Steve Kasperick-Postellon’s made us aware of his decision to leave St. Jude. His last full weekend with us will be this coming weekend of March 4 & 5. Please join me and take a moment of your time to come to the socials after each of those weekend Masses and offer Steve & Teresa your appreciation for their years of service to our parish community as well as your best wishes for the new journey they will be taking with St. Joseph in Dexter, Michigan. I would just like to say, it was a surprise to get Steve’s resignation and I will miss both Steve and Teresa as they were very welcoming, supportive and patient with me these past three years. Both of their gifts of music and song will be missed by our parish family and especially by me as Steve helped me to grow in my liturgical celebrations since my return to parish ministry after 16 years serving in healthcare. It is my sincere prayer for the people of St. Joseph in Dexter tol be blessed by their gifts in the months and years to come. As Steve said in his farewell piece, (which I also ask) to please keep Teresa & him in your prayers as they take a new path in serving our Lord. Opening for new Director of Music Ministry

With the resignation and soon departure of Steve, I have open the application process for the search of a new Director of Music Ministry. Already I have received resumes’. This is a vital position for our parish community to fill and it will take time. I expect that a new person will be hired and on board sometime after Easter or at the latest by the new fiscal year (July 1)). I realize that is a ways away but will take time to bring someone on board. I ask for your prayers that God will send us another gifted musician to lead us in our song and prayer life at our liturgies. Until then, several area musicians and parishioners will step in to assist us with

our music until the right person is selected to be a part of our parish and join our parish staff. "Are you saved?" “Are you saved?” asks the Fundamentalist. If we are asked this question what is the best way for a Catholic to answer that question? We should say as our reply; "As the Bible says, I am already saved (Rom. 8:24, Eph. 2:5–8), but I’m also being saved (1 Cor. 1:18, 2 Cor. 2:15, Phil. 2:12), and I have the hope that I will be saved (Rom. 5:9–10, 1 Cor. 3:12–15). Like the apostle Paul I am working out my salvation in fear and trembling (Phil. 2:12), with hopeful confidence in the promises of Christ (Rom. 5:2, 2 Tim. 2:11–13)." Come let us adore Him! Lent will soon be upon us beginning with Ash Wednesday, March 1st. Adoration of the Eucharist will be offered on these days and times all through Lent. Tuesday’s 12:00Noon to 5:45PM (followed by the 6:00PM Mass); Wednesday’s & Thursday’s 8:30AM to 12:00Noon; and then on Friday’s at 9:00AM to 12:00Noon. During Holy Week, Eucharistic Adoration will take place on Holy Monday (April 10), Holy Tuesday (April 11), and Holy Wednesday (April 12) from 8:00AM to 12:00Noon. Stations of the Cross will be offered each Friday immediately following the morning Mass. Sacrament of Reconciliation will be offered each Tuesday during Lent from 5:00PM—5:45PM, followed by the 6:00PM evening Mass. Lansing Area Reconciliation Services will be held on Sunday, March 26 from 2:00PM—4:00PM at both St. Gerard and St. Thomas Aquinas. Jesus is the model of love and obedience. It can be difficult to be obedient. Temptations, deceptions and lack of will can contribute to our failures. When we focus on what love asks us to do, however, we can overcome the obstacles to our desired choices and behaviors. Jesus serves as the model of love and obedience, and relying on him in prayer gives us strength to make the right choices.

Genesis recalls the first sin committed by humankind: Genesis 2:7-9; 3:1-7, disobedience to God. The second reading from Romans, 5:12-19 or 5:12, 17-19, explains how Christ came to counter that sin of disobedience with his perfect obedience. In the Gospel, Matthew 4:1-11, Jesus remains perfectly faithful to his Father as he resists the temptations put to him by the devil in the desert.

Trivia Challenge

St. Jude's Rooted Youth Group will be holding their annual Trivia Challenge to help raise money for our summer events on Saturday, March 11, at 7:00 pm in the Community Center.

This is a fun way to help a great cause! Gather a group of 6-8 people and create a team or register as an individual and be placed in a team. There will be ten rounds of questions with prizes distributed after each round. Our prizes this year were donated by local businesses and parishioners.

To register for the event pick up a registration form in the gathering space or go to our parish website under the CYC page in the Faith Formation tab.

Spring Retreat

Permission slips are now available for the Spring Retreat to be held in partnership with five other area parishes March 24-26 at Bethany House. The cost per person is $60.00 which covers food, lodging, and all activities. Our theme this year is "Stronger Together" and will be focusing on the unity of the Catholic

In place of our usual Sunday night meeting, we will be partnering up with other members of the parish for a good ol’ fashioned movie night! Join us to watch an inspirational film about Dorothy Day, a woman being considered for Sainthood. The film starts at 7:00 pm. Hope to see you there!

Director of Music Ministry The Catholic Community of St. Jude in DeWitt, Michigan is seeking a full time (35-40 hour) Director of Music to join our collaborative staff. We are an active, vibrant and growing parish community of 1350 households located just North of Lansing. Responsibilities include leading music for 3 weekend Masses, funerals, weddings and other special liturgies held throughout the year with our adult & hand bells choirs and a newly formed Praise Band. Oversight is also needed for formation of cantors and parish music volunteers for funeral services as well as working with children to establish music for their special liturgies. Skills with piano and organ are a necessity and any ability in other instrument(s) is welcome. Applicants must have a good knowledge of Catholic liturgies and a deep willingness to actively promote, engage and form assembly participation. Salary commensurate with experience. Lent Begins on Wednesday, March 1 The gift of Lent is almost here and it is time to make plans as to how each of us will spend this wonderful gift of being called to bring our hearts and souls back to God. I really believe that Lent is a gift from God that keeps us from straying too far from our home in God’s heart. Take time now to plan what you will do to make this happen in your life. It’s not all about giving something up, it might be spending more time in prayer, in doing things for others, especially those in need, being more kind and loving and being aware of God’s action in our lives every day. Happy Lent!

Prayer Partners in Flint There are many people in the Flint neighborhoods where poverty is the norm that could benefit from having someone praying for them on a daily basis. Several parishioners from St. Jude are involved in supporting them with prayer and occasional cards or notes. We invite YOU to join us in prayer. Contact Terry Humenik and I will give you the name and address of someone from Flint that you can pray for daily. Lent is a great time to begin this ministry in your family.

Women’s Lenten Evening of Reflection

Tuesday, March 14 at 6pm beginning with Mass and continues with dinner and speaker Mary Dillon from St. Mary parish in Flint. Her topic will be "How is Dorothy Day's Catholic Worker Movement relevant in today's church?" This evening is open to all women - invite your friends and family.

More Surgery on My Shoulder I will be having a total shoulder replacement on my left shoulder on March 1. This next step is to finish repairing it after my fall last summer. I will be off work from March 1 until March 8 and after that I will be working from home via computer for a while until I am able to get to the office more regularly. I will be checking my email and phone messages and handling my usual responsibilities as much as possible but you may not see me for some time. Please keep me in your prayers that this surgery will be the final one to return my left arm to full function.

All parishioners are invited to an explained Mass at church with Fr. Dave Rosenberg. Get to know the inside details of the Mass, the history of its development and how each person is invited into the life of Christ during every Mass. There is no consecration at an explained Mass so you might still want to come to the 6pm Mass that evening.

Women’s Retreat Day April 22 Our speaker will be Sr. Diane Zerfas from the Dominican Center for Spirituality in Grand Rapids. The topic will be Wisdom’s Feast - How Women Read and Pray With the Scriptures. Save the date to focus on enriching your relationship with Christ. Invite your family and friends to join us. Lent 2017 God calls out again to his people

God’s call to each of us to come back to him is the heart of the message of Lent. Like the people of the Old Testament we are often unaware of the ways in which we stray from God. During Lent we reflect on how we have strayed from God’s path and we reorient our lives toward him again. It is a time to take up spiritual practices that lift the fog of busyness, distraction, fear, or whatever else keeps us from aligning our wills with the will of God. “The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” (Mark 1:15) Jesus is calling us to reorient our lives in a fundamental way. Because we hope in God’s mercy and trust in the help of his grace, we can turn our hearts from sin and back to God. Fasting, prayer and almsgiving are expressions of our converted hearts. Through fasting we show a change in our relationship toward ourselves. Through prayer we express a change in our relationship toward God. Through almsgiving we reveal a change in our relationship with others. When we observe these practices, especially during the season of Lent, we free our hearts and prepare to receive God’s love, light and joy. God calls us to give him our whole hearts because God is love and the source of all love. God wants our love in return. During Lent we examine our lives and ask “What in my life keeps me from giving my heart to God? What am I holding back?”

Some people find it difficult to approach the Sacrament of Reconciliation. In his gentle love and mercy, God calls us to be reconciled to him because of his boundless love for us. Lent is a perfect time to experience God’s love and forgiveness through one of these opportunities for Reconciliation. Remember it is not the priest but Jesus who forgives sins. Reconciliation at St. Jude - 4pm until 4:30pm Saturdays of Lent, Additional opportunities for Reconciliation at St. Jude: Tuesday evenings during Lent from 5pm until 5:45pm Regional Reconciliation will take place on Sunday, March 26 at 2pm at St. Thomas Aquinas in East Lansing and at St. Gerard in Lansing.

Spend some quiet time with Jesus in Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Tuesday afternoons, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings each week of Lent And Holy week, Monday April 10, Tuesday April 11, Wednesday April 12 See the calendar on the back page for exact dates and times Daily Mass is another Lenten practice that is available at St. Jude on Tuesday evenings at 6pm and Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings at 8am. This is a beautiful way to spend time in prayer with Jesus.

ARISE together with Christ - season 4 - New Heart, New Spirit This small group study process begins the week of February 26 and runs for 6 weeks. Explore with other members of our parish community how we can grow closer to developing hearts like Jesus’ filled with the Holy Spirit. Late registrations will not have books the first week.

Women’s Lenten Evening of Reflection Tuesday, March 14. Beginning with Mass at 6pm followed by a delicious dinner and then speaker Mary Dillon will share thoughts and experiences talking about "How is Dorothy Day's Catholic Worker Movement Relevant in Today's Church?" Lenten Opportunities to Help Us to Return Our Hearts to God Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving are our key responsibilities during Lent

Little Black Books - Six Minutes a Day, beginning February 26 This parish favorite is the resource written by the former Bishop of Saginaw, Kenneth Untener. It guides us through the Gospels for Lent with helpful explanations and reflections along the way. Pick up your copy on the weekend of Febru-ary 26 so that you can begin the prayer journey for Lent.

Operation Rice Bowl - A project of Catholic Relief Services that invites us to give alms that will be used to assist our brothers and sisters around the world who are in desperate need of food, clothing, shelter due to poverty or natural disasters. The funds from Operation Rice Bowl allow us to stand in solidarity with the poor.

Food for the Poor Collection - A St. Jude tradition This annual Lenten project offers an experience for our faith community to come together in service, offering all parish households a means of alleviating hunger in our own community. Each household is asked to purchase and donate enough food to feed a family of similar size for one full day. This includes perishable foods. Food will be collected on Holy Thursday. Parishioners gather following Morning Prayer on Good Friday at 8:30am for a blessing of the food and packaging the food for distribution to families at Loaves and Fishes Shelter, Eve’s House, Safe Center in Clinton County, St. Vincent Refugee Services and local needy families. Parish-ioners volunteer to deliver the food to the many recipients. Watch the bulletin for additional information as the date gets closer.

Lenten Regulations Abstinence

No meat can be eaten on Ash Wednesday, all Fridays of Lent, and Good Friday by all who have reached the age of 14.

Fasting Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fasting for all who have reached their 18th birthday and who have not yet reached their 60th birthday. Fasting means having only one full meal to maintain one's strength. Two smaller, meatless and penitential meals are permitted according to one's needs, but they should not together equal the one full meal. *Those that are excused from fast and abs nence outside the age limits include the physically or mentally ill including individuals suffering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes. Also excluded are pregnant or nursing mothers. In all cases, common sense should prevail, and ill persons should not further jeopardize their health by fas ng.

Stations of the Cross Reflecting on the Stations of the Cross is an exercise in imaginative prayer. We are called to contemplate what Jesus experienced as he sacrificed himself for our sins. We imagine walking with Jesus on his final journey.

The Stations of the Cross are prayed every Friday morning during Lent

(except Good Friday) after the 8am Mass.

You are also welcome to pray the Stations of the Cross when you come to church at other times. Stations of the Cross prayer booklets are available for your use.

Did you know that the Stations of the Cross are an ancient devotion that began in the late Middle Ages? There are a variety of different prayers that can be used when praying the stations of the cross that can be helpful to people of different ages and interests. And of course you can offer your own prayers to Jesus as you travel the journey to Calvary with him.
