22. What are the sacraments and
which are they?
The sacraments, instituted by Christ and entrusted
to the Church, are efficacious signs of grace per-
ceptible to the senses. Through them divine life is
bestowed upon us. There are seven sacraments:
Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Eucharist, Penance,
Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders, and
Matrimony.

1. Hold the door for someone, even when you are in a
rush.
2. Take time out of your day to ask a co-worker how
she is doing.
3. See those around you as your brothers and sister,
not your rivals.

At the sight of the crowds, his heart was moved with pity for them because they were
troubled and abandoned, like sheep without a shepherd. (Mt 9:36)
Jesus was moved by the needs of the people. And filled with pity, he had mercy
on them. He healed, fed, consoled, forgave.
Pope Francis teaches us that “mercy is a key word that indicates God’s action towards us.
He does not limit himself merely to affirming his love, but makes it visible and
Tangible...Something concrete: intentions, attitudes, and behaviors
that are shown in daily living.”
The tradition names these concrete behaviors the “corporal works of mercy”:
Giving food and drink; clothing and sheltering; visiting the sick, ransoming the prisoner
and burying the dead. Alongside them are the “spiritual works of mercy”: Instructing,
counseling, and admonishing; bearing wrongs and forgiving sins;
comforting the living and praying for the living and the dead.
Have you decided yet on a plan for living out the corporal and spiritual works of mercy
each day during this Year of Mercy?
