Kampong is a Malay word which means village. Kampongs were common in Singapore and in some parts of South-east Asia like Malaysia and Brunei in the 60s before urbanisation started rapidly developing Singapore into a metropolitan city over the past 50 years.

With the memory of the Kampong history slowly dissipating, student leader, Naqiuddin Amsyar Bin Saszri (Diploma in Mass Communication) came up with a plan to bring Kaplan students on a Kampong-like experience. Set in the rustic environment of northwest Singapore, away from the bustling city, Bollywood Veggies provided visitors a Kampong-like experience by

introducing guests to the quiet and refreshing nature surrounding it and to the huge variety of plants grown and their uses. Students had a first-hand experience on paddy planting while being taught by the guide on the knowledge of rice farming. The session ended with a sumptuous lunch of Nasi Lemak. Nasi Lemak is a traditional Malay dish made from rice cooked with coconut and pandan leaves. It is then served with various dishes such as fried anchovies, chicken wings, vegetables and handmade sambal (chilli sauce).

After lunch, the students went on a guided plantation tour around the

farm where the guide shared some interesting facts about plants and introduced methods of sustainable and planet-friendly farming.

Career Development Series

You have reached the location of the interview thirty minutes before your scheduled timing. You have all the required documents and all set for the interview. Should you go straight to the reception area to get in touch with the interviewer? Wait! Here are some tips you should consider before making your way to meet your potential employer.

1Cool down- Singapore is a hot and humid city which makes some of us

perspire more than others, especially if the interview time is during mid-day when the sun is scorching hot. Take this time to cool yourself down. Have a gulp of water to hydrate and calm yourself.

2Eat something- Grab a quick bite if you have not eaten or drunk

anything. Make sure it is not too heavy nor too light. You wouldn’t want your tummy to rumble during the interview. Avoid food that contains strong smelling ingredients such as garlic or onions. The not-so pleasant

scent might linger in the interview room when you start to speak to the hiring manager.

3Head to the washroom- Finally, make way to the washroom. Ease

yourself if you need to. It will be awkward if you need to excuse yourself to go to the washroom during the interview. Next, head to the mirror to do a quick check on your turnout and bearing. From the top, make sure your hair, headgear or accessories are in place. Especially for ladies, touch up your make-up and clean up any smudges. Smile widely to see if there are any leftovers from the food you had eaten between your teeth. You wouldn’t want the interviewer to know what you have just eaten earlier on. Finally, make sure your outfit is neat and ready to go.

You are now all set to meet your potential employer. Make your way to the meeting room calmly and confidently with a smile. We wish you all the best and good luck!

After the successful Amazing Race event in March, Vietnamese Community in Kaplan (VNCK) organised another fantastic event, Pasir Bike Night, which took place on 30th July.

Along with the main activity – night cycling, there were several games played to create stronger bond in the team. With the points collected during the mini game challenges, teams were awarded with time preference and got to start the race ahead of others.

The first mini-challenge, “The whispering game”, required team members to form a line. The first player had to whisper a message to the next player who would then repeat the same action to the next until the last player of the line got the message. The team which successfully relayed the right message obtained a point. The second challenge, “Gank them all’, required the team members to be creative and fit all members in their team onto the bicycle

they were given. The last challenge required every team to decorate their bicycles with materials given to them.

The teams were then flagged off one by one. They were given an hour to complete the race with the winning team hitting the finish line. Throughout the race, supporters never ceased encouraging the cyclists and offered help if required. Some teams were competitive and strived to win while some teams simply enjoyed the night breeze, regardless of the race outcome. In a nutshell, the participants and organising committee had a wonderful time together.

With this, VNCK, would like to express our love and thanks to all participants who came for the event. Do continue to stay tune for more exciting events organised by VNCK!

Happy Independence Day, Indonesia!

17th August is a date to remember for all Indonesians. On this day, Indonesians around the world celebrates their country’s 72nd independence day. Not forgetting our roots, the committee members from PELIKAN organised and held the annual Independence Day event called “SURYAKANTA”. Suryakanta means magnifying glass. By holding the magnifying glass over the sunlight, the light particles forms a straight line into a dot which has the ability to create fire. PELIKAN’s event adopts this Suryakanta

philosophy, with the hope of uniting Indonesian students by strengthening the bond through various fun activities and “burning” the spirit of unity as one nation.

Together with PELIKAN committee members and 65 participants, the Indonesian Independence Day was held at Palawan Beach, Sentosa Island on August 19, 2017.The day started with a light drizzle but that did not dampen the spirit of all who played Indonesian traditional games such as ‘Marbles on the Spoon’ and ‘Kerupuk Eating Race’. A sandcastle building competition was held to express their creativity while competing with one another for the best sandcastle.

The games ended with the highlight; Three Headed Tug of War. This was an intense game which required more than just mere strength. Each round consisted of 3 teams who had to pull the rope towards a particular

direction for the other 2 competing teams to lose. Good communication and strategy were required between the team members for the big win.

After all the sweat and games, everyone gathered for a wonderful dinner by the sea. Ayam Penyet, a traditional Indonesian dish made of Chicken and crushed chilli sauce (sambal) was served, much to the delight of everyone who reminisced their time back in their home country.

PELIKAN is thankful to all who came for this event and looks forward to seeing you in their future events. Make more friends! Share good vibes! Have awesome fun!

One step at a time

Learn from it

Don't go through it alone

Changes happen around us everyday.

People change, circumstances change, things change.

Change may be a choice we make, or it may be imposed on

us. Starting a new course, settling down in a new

environment, getting married, changing of jobs, moving house

– these are examples of life changes we may experience.

Some people view change as a positive challenge, others find

difficulties in managing the consequences of new situations.

Here are some tips to help deal with it more effectively:

Try dividing a large problem into little ones. Work on them one at a

time, and give yourself a pat on the back each time you overcome one.

Change involves a transition from one set of circumstances to

another. Give yourself time to adjust and settle down.

Talk to your family, close friends or a professional like the school

counsellor. Share your problems with people you trust. Others may

offer a different angle to the situation.
