The 8th lunar month falls in September where majority of the Chinese community in Singapore celebrates the Mid-Autumn Festival. It is culturally believed that the moon is at its brightest and most enticing, especially during mid-month.

In Chinese mythology, it is said that a beautiful and benevolent wife, Chang Er, had consumed her husband’s elixir of immortality in order to prevent the elixir to fall into the hands of an evil man. As a result, she flew away

from earth and resided on the moon. To honour her, her favourite fruits and pastries were offered and shared amongst the people on earth every year during the 8th Lunar month.

Chua Ding Lin, Delano (Bachelor of Laws), a student leader in Kaplan, embarked on an amazing race-like adventure to the tune of this festive mood. Competing teams went on an intense race under the moonlight in Fort Canning, completing challenges, collecting clues and tools that will

ultimately reveal an association with the legend of Chang Er. The first three teams to accomplish their task won themselves shopping vouchers amounting to $480 in total! Before the night came to an end, each of the participants was surprised with a mini mooncake to enjoy.

The latest Labour Market Report which was released by the

Ministry of Manpower on 14th September reported that the resident unemployment rate declined in June 2017 as compared to the figures recorded in March 2017. However, the number remained higher than a year ago. The number of retrenchments occurred in the second quarter of 2017 was also lower than the previous three months. With higher job opportunities and fewer job seekers, the ratio of job vacancies to unemployed persons has improved for two consecutive quarters. Apart from that, a higher economic growth as compared to 2016 was also recorded. In the last National Day Message, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong mentioned that the government had expected the economy to grow by 2.7 percent this year as compared to 2 percent in 2016.

While this report looks positive for

job seekers, does it mean that you are secured with your current job? You might think that your company needs you as the economy improves. I beg to differ. It is indeed dependent on other factors, such as the industry and your worth in the organisation that you are in. In the age of automation and artificial intelligence (AI), there are many uncertainties ahead of us. Earlier this year, the Straits Times shared a report by the International Bar Association (IBA) which says that machines or software may eventually replace one-third of graduate- level jobs worldwide. It will be “cheaper” to acquire machines compared to traditional manpower as machines do not require annual leaves, become ill or have to attend to personal commitments. Additionally, machines are able to produce work at a faster rate.

Since the start of industrialization in the 18th and 19th century, machines

had begun replacing human labour. But this time round, Industrial Revolution 4.0 will be much different. A good example is the public bus industry. Trials for driverless buses will commence in Jurong West next year and we should expect these buses to hit our roads by 2020. This means that there will be lesser bus drivers needed in the near future. If the automation works well for buses, such driverless vehicles will be expanded to other public transportation such as taxis or even other vehicles like school buses, trucks and construction vehicles.

Machines are not only a ‘threat’ to jobs that need human drivers. Other jobs such as customer service and culinary are also on the line. The list of jobs that is replaceable with machines goes on as technology advances. The capability of machines to take over labour intensive jobs might pose a risk of unemployment, unless we remain marketable with skills that machines are less likely to acquire. Whether you like it or not, the current industrial revolution will come and you need to

be prepared for it. The threat is real. Live and adapt with it. It is the only chance for you if you want to survive the future._______________________________

In our next issue, we will share some tips on how you can remain marketable and leverage your career to greater heights during the Industrial Revolution 4.0.

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Competition 2017 is an inter-varsity competition sponsored by SAP Asia Pacific. The objective of this challenge is to run and compete a large virtual company using a system which provides users with a soft real-time business application.

The Country Final was held on 29th September 2017. There were 5 teams from Kaplan, 2 teams from Temasek Polytechnic and 2 teams from Singapore University of Social Science (SUSS) that competed for the top 2 spots to represent Singapore in the regional finals in Thailand which included countries from

Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines competing for the top spot. After an intense battle, Team Athena led by Waritsara Kwaosibsam with fellow team members Pattaranun Hamontri, Park Joseph, Wansiri Roeksanan and Do Minh Nhat proudly achieved third place in the country finals. Though Kaplan did not get into the top two placements, the representing students gained invaluable experience which can be applied to their future employment.

Congratulations for the tenacious battle Team Kaplan!

Start-up Weekend Singapore Mega happened on the last weekend of September at NUS. There were 300 people who participated. Two of our IT students from Murdoch University went and here are their takeaways:

1You meet people who built inspiring things

We met 2 fifteen year-olds who developed a camera app that utilises machine learning to apply the rule of thirds and the golden ratio on the photos people take. I feel talking to people who built cool things like that pushes you to do the same.

2You become part of a community of people from your field

Joining a team of computer science students from NUS, NTU and SUTD allows us to know and share our curriculum, study resources and career

strategies across different schools.

3You get to see how things you’re studying fit into a business

We were mentored by people in senior positions in start-ups and that allowed us to see how our skills fit in the context of jobs in the real world. This is invaluable knowledge for a student who has just started out on a career path.

3 Reasons Why You Should Go to Hackathon

On 16-17 September 2017, a representative group from Indonesian Student Community at Kaplan (PELIKAN) participated in a football and basketball competition organised by the Indonesian Students community at National University of Singapore (NUS). This event is called “Pekan Olahraga Pelajar Indonesia (POPI)”. On the first day, 8 PELIKAN student representatives formed a team with some representatives from the Indonesian student community of NAFA (LASKAR) to compete against the other Indonesian Communities of NTU, PSB and Catholic Junior

College. The games were intense with every player putting their best effort to win the competition. On the second day, PELIKAN sent a team of 5 to compete in basketball matches against NUS, Curtin University, Saint Andrew’s Junior College (SAJC) and SIM.

Though PELIKAN competed and won some of the stronger contenders, they did not achieve enough points to bring home the medals. Nevertheless, great friendships were forged amongst all the players on both unforgettable days.

Till we meet again!

Everyone can be their own boss, but how? Interested alumni who were inspired to be an entrepreneur attended the Entrepreneurship Talk on 21 September 2017 at Huone Singapore.

Our guest speakers, Ms Anna C Mallon, a founder of 5 businesses and Mr Darren Soh, Kaplan alumnus who founded The Party Quest, shared their tips on how to generate business ideas, source for funding and identify the essential qualities to form a great team. Not only that, the speakers had also prepared them on the challenges that they would face as future entrepreneurs by sharing their real life experiences.

One step at a time

Learn from it

Don't go through it alone

Changes happen around us everyday.

People change, circumstances change, things change.

Change may be a choice we make, or it may be imposed on

us. Starting a new course, settling down in a new

environment, getting married, changing of jobs, moving house

– these are examples of life changes we may experience.

Some people view change as a positive challenge, others find

difficulties in managing the consequences of new situations.

Here are some tips to help deal with it more effectively:

Try dividing a large problem into little ones. Work on them one at a

time, and give yourself a pat on the back each time you overcome one.

Change involves a transition from one set of circumstances to

another. Give yourself time to adjust and settle down.

Talk to your family, close friends or a professional like the school

counsellor. Share your problems with people you trust. Others may

offer a different angle to the situation.
