Singapore Children’s Society (SCS) is a charitable organisation which looks after the welfare of children. On 20 August 2016, SCS welcomed 32 students from Kaplan on a mentoring stint with 20 youths, age between 6 and 17 at Roundbox Toa Payoh. Mentoring juveniles is done for many purposes, such as academic assistance i.e. tutoring, career preparation or a broadening of perspective; the latter being the objective of this event.

Organised by Leonard Lim Zheng Rong of UCD’s Bachelor of Business Studies (Honours) in Management, the mentoring stint started with team games to build rapport among the students and SCS youth.

During a break, the Kaplan Dance Club put up a salsa dance performance. It was then followed by a sharing session on dreams and passion. Kaplan students shared their stories and assured the youths that it was okay to experience failures and to possess a positive outlook and persistence regardless of what they are facing. This prompted the youths to agree and they started to share their hopes for their future as well.

The mentoring stint may have lasted less than a day but their endearment towards the Kaplan students affirms the importance of mentoring which plays an important role in providing a positive life transition for youths

who are struggling or at-risk. Each one can make an impact on someone else’s life.

Monthly activities and workshops are specially organised for Kaplan students. You may wish to check out the following link https://campuslife.kaplan.com.sg/ to find more information on our events/activities/workshops held regularly.

Career Development Series

Congratulations! You are now one of the few thousands of graduates in the job market. You will soon realise that securing your dream job with the ideal salary packages is not as easy as it may seem. To make things worse, the current economic uncertainty makes your job hunt more challenging. So what can you do to survive as a fresh graduate?

1. Just grab that job offer!

You applied for a job, managed to impress the hiring manager during the interview and the company offered you a position. Perfect? Not really. They are offering you an amount much lesser than what you are asking for. Should you take up the offer?

If there isn’t any other opportunities and you are still on a resume-sending spree, you might want to consider to accept the offer. The

pay might not justify the job that you are doing (given that you have done market research on the salary). However, take the position as a stepping stone for you to gain some experience. It is good help for you to be financially stable at the very least and at the same time to expand your network in the industry. Soon, when opportunity knocks on your door to move on, you can consider taking a more ideal position equipped with relevant experiences.

2. Be in touch with the industry that your degree is related to even though you are not able to find a suitable job at the moment.

You have a degree in Information Technology (IT) but you are currently doing sales for a pharmaceutical company. It is not a job that you are planning to stay in the long run, but you are merely doing it as there is no opportunity

Fresh graduate in the current

economic climate

for you at the moment.

Rather than to wait for the chance and the right time to go for a more suitable job, try to keep yourself in touch with the current trends and be updated on the latest direction that is related to your degree. In this case, as an IT graduate, you may want to take up freelance programming jobs to chalk up relevant industry experience which will be useful when you are making a move to your desired career in the future.

3. Volunteer yourself in non- profit organisations.

When you offer your services in non-profit organisations, your presence will surely be greatly appreciated by the people who need them. You’ll be glad to know that you are helping other people who are in need and you’ll feel that your time spent is worthwhile. If possible, carry out tasks which are relevant to your qualification so that you are able to utilize the skills you attained during your studies.

Besides providing aid to those in need, you will be meeting other individuals who are volunteers themselves. It is a great chance for you to build your network on career opportunities. Who knows, your partner in the welfare organisation is also a business owner who is also expanding his/her business operations.

Apart from the tips shared above, do take note that you should always take every job opportunity seriously and have an open mind to learn in order to gain more experience. The last thing that you want to do is to quit the job halfway through without gaining any valuable insights. Also, if you are always changing jobs within a short period of time, it wouldn’t look good as it seems that you are job hopping.Good luck with your job hunt. Do not let the current economic climate pull your confidence down. Should you need help or to speak to someone on your career concerns, you may set an appointment with the career counsellor for a counselling/coaching session. Graduation

11 students were invited to Novotel Hotel at Clarke Quay for a seminar on 27 Aug 2016. Top executives from major industry leaders such as AccorHotels, Expedia and Tripadvisor shared coaching and guidance skills to approximately 100 attendees from various institutions like NTU, NUS and SMU.

Guest speaker, hotelier Mr Loh Lik Peng, was also invited to share about his hotel enterprise and the launch of start-ups. Mr Loh is the founder and Director of Unlisted Collection, an empire of hotels and restaurants that he has carefully nurtured over the years. A lawyer by training, he stumbled upon a run-down building in Keong Saik Road, a former red-light district in Chinatown. He fell in love with it, bought it and revamped it to become Singapore’s first boutique hotel, the ever-popular Hotel 1929.The students were given insights into the hospitality and tourism industries. They were given the opportunity to network, exchange contacts and some were even offered career opportunities.

Do you know how great a magnifying glass is? It can

unite the smallest light particles into one dot and create a fire. That is why Pelikan named their second event “SURYAKANTA”, which is a Sansekerta word that means magnifying glass.

The event was held on August 14 at Palawan Beach, Sentosa and was opened to all students in Singapore, regardless of nationalities and universities with the purpose of introducing and promoting the Indonesian culture. There were students from Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand and India who joined the event and also Indonesian students from Kaplan, NTU, SIM, Raffles Design Institute, Lasalle College of Arts, MDIS, PSB Academy, Curtin Singapore, JCU and TMC Academy.

The event started with ice-breaking games and continued with an estafet consisting of five Indonesian traditional games. These are makan kerupuk (2 participants eat crackers with their legs tied together), kelereng sendok (delivering marbles using a spoon), ngedot jongkok (drinking from a baby bottle while squating) , estafet sarung (relay run) , balap karung (gunny sack race). The last game was a game of a 3-way tug-of-war. All participants cheered their teammates on to win the game. The hot weather did not stop them to have some fun as they enjoyed the event.

The event ended at Southernmost Point in Sentosa with a dancing performance from the Indonesian students from Nanyang Technological University. After which, it was followed with the announcement of the winning teams from the games. Bakso and Soto Team came out as the winner and the participants were delighted with a delicious lunch of Ayam Penyet.

PELIKAN would like to thank everyone for being great participats and stay tuned for our next event!
