A Message from our Principal,

Mr Cameron Smyth-Gapps

Safety in and around the school zones

As you are aware, Dewrang Street becomes very congested during morning drop off and afternoon pick up times. I

ask that all drivers support us in keeping the students and community safe by adhering to the following rules on

Dewrang Street:

Drive slowly. The street is very narrow and people can walk out from behind parked vehicles at any time.

Move up as far as you can in the ‘Kiss and Drop Zone’ and continue to move forward as space becomes

available. This will allow other cars to fit in behind you.

Stay in your vehicle in the ‘Kiss and Drop Zone’. If you cannot see your child, please loop around as

opposed to sitting in the zone for an extended period.

Loop around the street as opposed to stopping in the middle of the road and blocking traffic.

As a pedestrian, find a safe and visible spot to cross the road with your children.

Both marked and unmarked police vehicles regularly patrol Dewrang Street and will issue significant fines to anyone not adhering to the road rules in a school zone. I thank you in advance for making the roadways outside the school safe for our community.

Meet the Teacher Evening

As shared in the last Bush Telegraph, our Meet the Teacher Evening for 2020 was a great success. Please ensure that you speak to your child’s teacher if there is any further information that you require moving forward. I have included some photographs of the evening. It was wonderful to see so many parents in attendance.

Badge Presentation for 2020 SRC Students

Now that our Student Representative Council (SRC) for Years 1-6 has been nominated, we wish to formalise the election of these students with a badge presentation. Badge presentations will take place on Friday 13th March. Year 1 and 2 representatives will be presented with their badge at the K-2 Assembly at 9:40am and our Years 3-6 representatives will receive their badge at the 3-6 Assembly at 2:25pm. Zone Swimming Carnival Hoodies for Sale

Students who qualified for this week’s Zone Swimming Carnival are reminded that they have the opportunity to purchase a zone hoodie on the day. Hoodies cost $50.00 each. Design options are attached to the note that went home to our zone swimmers last week. Leadership Breakfast

Miss Blewitt and I had the recent honour of hosting the school’s Leadership Breakfast. The breakfast provided an opportunity for our Captains, Prefects, House Captains and their parents to enjoy time together and celebrate their election to the 2020 leadership team. Our leaders and their parents also used the breakfast to identify the initiatives and programs that they would like to see the school explore this year to ensure that our leaders have many significant responsibilities and the opportunity to strengthen their leadership skills. We look forward to implementing many of these initiatives across the year. I would also like to thank Mrs Sleiman for her tremendous work in organising the food for the breakfast. Promotion of the School’s Leadership Team for 2020 in the St George and Sutherland Shire Leader

I am pleased to advise our community that the picture on the right, along with a caption about our wonderful school, was included in the most recent edition of the St George and Sutherland Shire Leader. This was part of an initiative by the paper to promote the leadership teams within the local area and we are joined by leadership teams from a variety of other local schools. It provides a nice keepsake for the parents of our Captains and Prefects this year.

Halogen - National Young Leaders Day

Today, our Captains and Prefects had the opportunity to attend their first leadership event for the year. This year, the school has elected to take the students to the Halogen National Young Leaders Day at the International Convention Centre at Darling Harbour. Our students will hear from inspirational young leaders and also participate in leadership workshops with students from many other schools across Sydney. Judging by the photographs, our students are having a wonderful day!

Term 1 - 2020

Attendance

It is important to embed good attendance patterns in students from an early age. Unless students are sick, they should attend school every day and on time. As a late-starting school, there really is no excuse for arriving late to school. Most students will have been out of bed for at least an hour or more. Switch off the TV, put away devices and walk/be driven to school to be here no later than 9:20am, ready for classes at 9:25am.

Together we would like to thank the outgoing Committee for their efforts and leadership and welcome our new members. The P&C is a group of parents who come together to represent the community and initiate various social events and fundraising activities as well as operating and managing the school’s Canteen and Uniform Shop. In the past, moneys received from the efforts of fundraising activities has helped with the purchase of equipment and resources for the school, both in and outside the classroom, physical upgrades to our school space as well as providing financial support for incursions and activities held in our school for the benefit of our students. At this time, I would like to encourage you to consider getting involved and coming along to our meetings, which will be held on the last Thursday of the month. Membership is only $2.00. Join us in working collectively, setting direction, objectives and focusing on new goals to continually make improvements to our school for our children and their education. Our next scheduled meeting is at 7.00pm on Thursday 26 March 2020.

Pick-up Zone Guidelines Blakehurst Public School uses a No Parking area on Dewrang Street to provide parents and carers with a safe environment to drop off and pick up their children from school by car. The designated area in front of the school is a No Parking zone between 8.00am - 9.30am and 2.30pm - 4.00pm. No Parking means you must not stop for more than two minutes and you must remain in or within 3 metres of your vehicle. Vehicles cannot be left unattended in the designated zones during the above times, nor can you wait for more than two minutes in your car during this time for the pick-up line to begin. The pick-up line operates in the afternoon from 3.25pm to 3.40pm Monday to Friday. If you arrive earlier than 3.25pm, please park safely nearby (not over our neighbours driveways) or proceed around the block until 3.25pm when the pick-up zone begins.
